To answer your question, it depends. If two parents have very different facial features their kids can look wonky. Example: Parent A is tall and has large facial features, and an especially large nose. Parent B is tiny and has tiny facial features.
If the kid gets Parent B's tiny facial features, but Parent's A's massive honker, they will look weird.

I think Rebecca and Ian's kid would look fine though. They don't have wildly different facial features.

The ideas and concepts are executed just fine, it's the pacing that's the issue. I never bought the "wasted potential" thing, mostly because A) it's not over yet, B) we have lots to look forward to and C) it's much more crew driven than most shows. For better or worse, this IS Steven Universe. All I ask is that they work hard and build upon what's already there.
