Ah, you mean how I put a letter or two onto the dialogue in places where multiple characters were talking? I suppose I didn't need to do it, but I saw that others had done it in the past before, and it seemed like a clear way to signify who was talking during scenes where more than just two people are speaking. Well, I don't write. I don't have any criticism to offer him. If I were, that would be damaging to his desire to write, and I don't want to be responsible for that as I do like what he does casually and want to see more. I can put myself in your shoes too. A virtual lego simulator is what pays for my schooling, room, and board. I've put in a lot of effort into it, and the result of that is a substantial amount of people I don't want finding me either. Ahh, I suppose part of the confusion comes from the fact that I write my stories to be placed on Pastebin, and then transfer them over here as best I can. I'm not too worried about the character limit, especially since I imagine that those that are interested in seeing my writings would go to Pastebin typically any ways.

As for your suggestion, well, I typically keep Anon's text without quotes or > arrows. I suppose that, given how little he typically talks, that's not the biggest worry, but it's an easy way to differentiate between other voices and his, and it also shows him as a bit of an outsider.

part, I don't know if I'd want to do that, as it means that someone might accidentally miss a line here or there as they pass over it, their brain thinking of it like the rest of the more descriptor lines that begin with an >. I mostly worry about confusion in my writing, and wanting to keep things as clear as possible.

Thoughts, anyone? If people do like one form more than another, I can always try and modify my writing from now on to better assist with others reading it.

Yeah, that makes sense. I was actually fairly inspired by Runner in To Tame a Human when I was originally making my story. I liked the sort of dynamic he had going on, and that has translated a little into who my Anon is/will be. He's not a wilting flower by any means, and he may prove to be quite useful later on!

Thats a good example, yes. Anon is smart enough to remember his high school history lessons about nobility and the confines one works in to play tithe to a king. In essence it seems to play into his character as well with his owner. (but I'm also fond of the trope of servents becoming more. Like a knight or body guard)

Yeah, you'd definitely be right about that! In some regards, while he saved Bryce, she also saved him, considering what an awful shape he was in when they found each other. There is, perhaps, a certain loyalty there, as well as the factor that, going off of what he knows about Bats, and what he's heard, Bryce and her people are stuck in a poor position. While he might not be a Noble, or seemingly capable of great change in the world, he still wants to try and do the right thing, to help those who need it.

Bryce also has that going on, though I think that'll become a bit more evident with future Chapters. Anon's gotten more screen time due mainly to the fact that he's the Anon of this story, but Bryce, and others, will be getting more development as well!

(As for the trope you mentioned, it might very well happen later on!)

There are animals in this world, non-sentient, non-Human ones I mean, though they're a bit different than the kinds we know, but that's where they can get some of their gear from. Well, let's be fair here, most of my "writing" is actually just obsessive world-building because I can't cope with real life stress any other way than clinging on for dear life as my brain casually disregards reality to think up stuff. Your brief description sounds good, rather straightforward solution to the, "but the animals are also people," problem that isn't weird. (like, you know, anthro cows milking regular cows) Since your bats seem to be neck-deep in forests, trapping and hunting probably would substitute for ranching rather well. People sometimes forget that very fertile land can support a fuckload of grazing animals. Oh, and couple that with the complete misunderstanding and ignorance of medieval hunting methods and animal husbandry. For your setting, if you have forest-dwelling browsers that form herds I'd suggest having your bats use pit traps and cheap fencing to funnel animals in. It's one of the oldest methods to kill a lot of animals really, really fast and if successful. I would suggest a lack of spikes in the pit, we are trying to harvest hide too.

"Benefits and favors" is something you'll have to explain a bit, because I just don't get what you mean. If they're not so well-liked it doesn't make so much sense that they would be given anything, so they probably need some trade good(s) that affords them enough to remain friendly, but not too valuable so they're a target.

Thank you for even more ideas and advice! The Forest certainly would provide plenty of spaces for them to hunt as it is large and the darkness of it can obscure view, as well as the fact that sudden light, like from a torch, could be used to startle animals into traps and the like. As for the animals themselves, well, my main idea was having it be something like Humans and monkeys in our world. I was thinking of it as, much like how Humans evolved from a lesser form, that being apes, there too still exist older, more fully-animal versions of Furs and the like. So, to use your cow analogy, something like Anthro cows milking different, far more primitive versions of cows as we know them.

I imagine what I just wrote sounds like a bit of a clusterfuck here, but it makes sense in my head, and it should hopefully make more sense when they come up in-story.

Honestly, since I know what you're trying to do now, I'd suggest going backward in evolutionary history and then finding evolutionary dead-ends since they sometimes have really cool features that just sucked for where they were. I don't know how much research you've done so far, but that's what I did for something else. (ghostwriter)

Just to save you some headache and potential questions from detail-oriented folks (or screeching from weirdos) I'd advise the trees being hard to grow in any way other than naturally and producing fruits. It's simple, fulfills the needs, and gives the bats a niche role there. (being able to fly and crawl in the trees)

Wood is one of those weird resources that nobody's gone to war over unless it was some weird circumstances. Well, that's not entirely true, people have gotten very pissed when some assholes come by and chop their forests down many times throughout history. I have a pretty brutal war in my setting that has careless logging as casus belli for both it and the smaller-scale sequel.

I also would suggest that any logging be done by humans and not bats, they just could not physically do it on a large scale. You'll see why right away in your research.

I'm planning on trying to find good examples to run with, though some will more than likely need to change. It'd be odd to have, say, horse people looking back at huge horse-creatures, and then the Bats pick up an an old Bat-creature they can hold in their hands cause it's so small.

I might add that in later on, yeah. I already set the trees up as being pretty huge and sunlight-blocking, but still, I don't think that'd stop me from adding some more to them. There are reasons that it's useful for the Bats that the woods are like this, but yeah, the fruit could be a helpful addition.

I do think that the trees being trees make them a helpful resource, but definitely not something that can't be gotten any where else, which, I don't know, tempers how much people would want to fight the Bats to take over the land.

As for the logging, I didn't actually plan for the Bats to do it, nor for Humans. The way I have it set up, at least at the moment, is that the logging is done by a different Noble house and is somewhat overseen by the Bats, or something along a similar line. It's not easy for them to do the logging of such ancient plants themselves, so they've made a sort of deal with another Noble to handle the more physical labor-based part of things. Again, like with the animals, it may sound weird in here, but please trust me when I say there's at least a little bit of a method to the madness.

Okay, I read it and I've busted out the Bofors so here's what I've got:

Those tiny, tiny things are the only bits of criticism I could muster. Very well-written in my opinion, seems crisp and clear like we're seeing this from the perspective of an aviation professional. Personally? I would find a way to chip off the end of that last paragraph to make it flow better, it's the largest one you have and stands out. That end where they both say the same thing could use it's own little line, I think it visually pops better.

For the aviation professional look, I binged a few audio logs of radio traffic between air and ground, and then read up on some details like the napping and the plug doors. In addition, I also read that some pilots are licensed to carry a firearm in defense, and I'm considering adding it for extra tension

CHAPTER FOUR

>Bryce followed after the Elder, walking behind him as he led the way to his home
>He held the door open for her, though, allowing her to enter before him
>Once inside, he shut the door and walked over to a large table set in the center of the main room of the building
>Slowly, he opened a cabinet, and withdrew a large, cloth-like scroll that he began to unfurl over top of the table
>As he moved, it was easy to see that his large cloak was actually his wings, which he kept wrapped around himself
>Bryce stood to the side, examining what new treasures and items the old Bat might have added to his collections
>He'd always had a fondness for sparkly things
"So, Bryce, you finally got yourself a Human, hmm?"
>He asked, a certain inquisitive tone to his voice
"Yes, I did indeed. I'm glad he has not seemed overwhelmed by our home."
"A worry worth contemplating, but it seems you have indeed found yourself quite the beast!"
"Elder!"
"Apologies, apologies, I was merely commenting on how large he appears! It is not often you find a Human of that height, and even moreso, of that build!"

"Yes, he certainly is...remarkable."
>When she spoke, the Elder turned his head to look at her, thumbs and wings smoothing out the cloth before he stepped to the side to go fetch something, calling out to her to speak
"Hm? Is their something affecting your admiration, my dear?"
"What? No, no, he's most definitely a fine Human. I was mostly thinking of the...unique circumstances that brought him to me."
"Aren't those typically known as trappers or breeders, Bryce?"
"Nothing of the sort. He appeared out of nowhere when I was in danger, covered in injuries. Still, despite them, he fought to help protect me, a stranger."
"You speak like he's one of the noble Humans from your stories, my dear~"
>He replied, a soft, warm tone in his voice, the Elder walking back into the room
>He smiled at Bryce, and she returned it, soon following him to the table
"I'm not quite sure what he is, Elder. What I DO know is that fate, it seems, has seen fit to bring us together for the time being. I have no way of knowing what the future holds, but I do know that it feels just a tiny bit more secure than it did the day before."
>He laughed, placing down a few crudely-cut wooden figures, setting them up at different locations on what turned out to be a large map
"You talk of him with riddles and respect! Well, whatever he is to you, however he has come to be with you, if it makes you smile such as you have been, then I am happy that you found him~"
>They shared smiles once again before beginning to mull over the map in front of them

"So, you say the attack happened over here, then?"
"Yes, they attacked when we were slowly moving through the area. I am less worried about the fact that there was an attack and more so how close it was to the castle, and therefor, the Forest."
"And there was no official way to tell whose soldiers they were?"
"Well, yes and no."
"Hm?"
"I recognized one of them, but I don't really have any way to prove it was him."
>The old Bat frowned at that, taking a seat in one of the chairs ringing the large table and map
"Who was he?"
"Williams. I'd recognize his eyes anywhere."
>A silence grew in the room like a bubble, getting bigger and bigger until it finally popped
"Well, at the moment, I see two major points you can attempt to use. The first is you can go to see the King and ask him to place more guards on patrol on the roads. While it might not do much, especially if Williams is one of those that are attacking people, it WILL curb some violence, to a degree."
>She nodded examining the map, before her eyes wandered back to him
"The second point is the festival that's happening within a month, is it not?"
"Indeed it is. This will be an excellent chance to gain some favor with the King. Of course, we may wind up aggravating more of the nobility should we do too well."
>He said, looking back to Bryce

>She was staring at the map attentively
>Hand at her chin and finger pressed to her lips while she thought
"I suppose we have no choice but to upset them. Should it come back to harm us, do not worry, I will claim the consequences."
>A scoff drew her out of her thoughts and over to him
"You may be nobility, but don't look down upon the rest of us. We're a family, and we will all band together as one should the worst come to pass."
>She nodded, a certain pinkness to her cheeks
>She always felt embarrassed when he pulled rank on her
>She didn't really FEEL 'better' than any other Bat, but such was the way with stature
"Now, shall we go over strategies? We have much to discuss for the festival."
"Yes, let's."

>His train of thought was derailed by a stick as it was waved in his face
>Well, it was closer to his chest, as well as bouncing up and down
>Tybbie wasn't a tall Bat, after all
>Still, he was trying to best to get Anon's attention
>Had he really been that out of it?
"Aaaaaanoooooon! come on, Anon, get the stick! Do you want the stick, boy? Do you?"
>Well, he didn't dislike sticks, he supposed
"Go get it, Anon~!"
>Watching the branch fly into the bushes, Anon made a decision
>He'd try and keep his mind off of inquisitive questions and rambling ideas that took up space in his head
>For now, he'd try and enjoy a relaxing, fun, hour or two

>The time she spent with the Elder just flew past

>While the Festival might be discussed as a display of skill and aptitude from the houses of the various Nobles, deep down it was anything but
>The world wasn't so kind as to make things even
>That's just the way things were
>While such a defeated attitude might have sounded sad to some, Bryce, and most of her people, had accepted this simple truth of the world
>That didn't mean she couldn't fight to change it
"I think that should suffice, Elder."
"Yes, anything more and I fear we might begin to overthink things, even for us."
"Like usual, the outcome of this Festival is up to the strength of our people, and the favor of the Gods."
>She gave him a confused look when he chuckled
"Ahh, I like that one."
"Did I say something funny, Elder?"
"No no, not at all my dear. Quite the opposite really."
>He explained, though it really didn't make her feel any less confused
>While she sat, he slowly started to clear the dishes they had left
>He was quite fascinating to watch work
>He had been born with arms and hands made more for flight
>Unlike Bryce herself, for instance, who had hands and minor wings mostly attached to her arms
>The Elder had proper wings, a thumb sticking up, while his fingers extended down, longer and longer, resulting in huge wings he could use to fly with
>Though, she couldn't really recall the last time she'd seen him use them for that purpose
>Well, he was pretty old, after all

"By the way, there was one aspect of the Festival we have yet to talk about."
"Oh? Which spot is that, Elder?"
"Lord Rammstein's additional 'tournament'. If we're planning on trying our hardest to win favor, submitting Anon could be-"
"Elder! Do you really think I'd submit Anon to such...barbarity? Lord Rammstein may hold his little 'tournament' and it may be a good 'in' with him, but I will not submit my pet to such an event!"
"I apologize, Bryce, but you must see the benefit of placing him in it, yes? He's larger and stronger than most other Humans we know, and you yourself have said about how he fought to defend you. Does he not seem like the right Human for the task?"
"I have no way of knowing what might take place there, Elder, and I will not risk my pet's life for it! Speaking of which, I believe I shall collect him and go."
"Allow me to once more offer my apologies Bryce. I do not wish to offend you, I merely think of our people and the benefit this could have for us all. Still, if you'd wish me not to speak of it again, I shall remain silent."
"Yes, I think that would be for the best. Thank you for the talk, Elder."
>Bryce said, getting up without another word before the Elder could react
>She marched over to the door, opened it, lamp light streaming in, and then headed outside
"Anon! Where are you?"
>She called out, not even bothering to look back, the Elder standing in the doorway of his home, watching her
>Not too long after she'd called, Sy emerged from the bushes, soon followed by Anon
>He had Tybbie on his shoulders, the little Bat laughing, while he also held on to a smaller bat's (Gabby, was it?) hand
>Spreading her arms, Bryce drifted to the ground easily, touching down with practiced grace

>Walking over, Sy stood to attention, and bowed, with only a hint of flourish
>Okay, the spinning hand and large, sweeping arm gestures might have been a bit much, but still, a commendable effort
"I..We, showed your Human around, Lady Bryce, and now we've brought him back!"
>Said the little Bat proudly, Sy clearly puffing his chest out to try and impress her
>Of course, one serious gesture deserves another, and so she reached out, placing a hand on his shoulder
"Thank you very much, Sy~ I truly appreciate your, and your friends', effort to help not only my Human, but myself as well."
>From the way his wings flapped, she could tell that had made him very happy to hear
>Of course, Tybbie and Gabby got their turns as well, Bryce making sure to thank each of them individually for their work
>Eventually though, it was done, and she wanted to go
>Looking back around, she noticed that the above-ground homes had once again become heavily populated
>Turning, she looked up at the many smiling faces looking down at her
>Then, in the middle, was Elder's face
>Still smiling, but it was smaller than before
>Had she been too harsh with him?
>She felt in her heart that she had made the right choice
>But was it also the wrong one?
>Whatever it was, she was stuck with it now
>And speaking of now, she had her people to address

>Remember, calm and reassuring, this is just another visit, one like any other
>Just feel the ground beneath your feet, the wind flowing through your fur and wings and
"Thank you all for yet another wonderful visit! It brings me much joy to see you all yet again. Not only that, but thank you Sy, Tybil, and Gabriella, for taking care of my pet while I spoke with our Elder. It can be difficult to handle a responsibility placed upon you all of a sudden, but it shows a strength of character to rise to the occasion. Thank you all yet again! I look forward to our next visit."
>She gestured to Anon on that last part, inspiring a cheer to go up from the two Bats currently holding on to Anon
>Still, as her speech came to a close, Anon lifted Tybbie up off his shoulders and down onto the ground
>Before the little Bats left, though, he crouched down, letting them pat him
>With that, they fluttered back up onto the raised platforms and to their families, joining in the waving as Bryce and Anon Began to head out
>Once they were past the last building, the lights in the forest dimmed, a wave of darkness swallowing up the world behind them
>Before it swallowed them too, Anon reached out, taking hold of Bryce's hand

CHAPTER FIVE

>it was late when they stepped out of the woods
>Though, it was odd how the night sky was brighter than the forest at daytime
>The guards greeted them in their usual manner, though Anon noticed Bryce only gave them a small nod
>He had wondered why she was still holding his hand, despite their being back on the grounds, but he got his answer when he walked up beside her
>She looked exhausted
>Trying his best to act like a concerned pet, he let out, what he hoped sounded like, an inquisitive whimper, attempting to catch her eyes with his
>It wasn't too hard, her eyes widening in surprise at his whine
>Still, he saw her crack a faint smile, though she raised her spare hand to cover her mouth
>They kept walking, with Anon standing closer, letting Bryce lean on him
"Sorry about this, Anon, days like this just..hahhh..leave me feeling so drained."
>She kept smiling at him, but her ears flopped down on the sides of her head
>Well, as adorable as that was, Anon wondered what the etiquette was here
>Did he just let her walk along like this and maintain some dignity, while tiring herself out further
>Or did he do something about it, and risk getting her in trouble or something?
>He thought about it for a little longer, until she stumbled on her way through the court yard
>Sure, she'd probably have been fine, but that was the last straw for him
>What were they going to do to him, after all
>Give him a bath?
>Reaching down, he slipped one arm behind Bryce's legs, the other moving to her back and then, with a quick movement, he scooped her up off the ground
>She was surprisingly easy to lift, lighter still than even he had thought she'd be

"Stand down, men. Do you really think my pet wishes to harm me? He is merely trying to help me to my bed."
>They looked from one to the other before nodding at her, backing off to their original posts
>She felt a warm hand squeeze her side, so she turned her attention back to Anon
>He looked...not worried but, unsure?
>That seemed like the right word for it
>Looking into her eyes, he tilted his head from her to where he was holding her, and then he looked to her, and then at the ground, before coming back to her
>She wasn't exactly sure what he was getting at, but honestly, there was no one around, and she was too tired to really care
>Reaching her arms up, she looped them around the back of Anon's neck, her wings draping over him
"Carry me to our room, please, Anon."

>She had been quiet, but she knew from the way he nodded that he had heard her, and then they were off again
>Some of the guards held the doors in their way open so Anon could carry Bryce along, managing to get to, and inside, her room

I never thought I'd be so happy to be able to talk...
"I'm sorry about the long day, Anon. I hope you didn't mind spending time with the children while the Elder and I talked."
Nah, it's alright, they were pretty cute, and I know you've got your royal duties and all that. How did things go with them?

"Nothing, Anon, nothing, I'm simply tired, is all, and I lost track of my thoughts. How about we get some sleep, and then talk more tomorrow morning over breakfast?"

>What a sight
>It certainly wasn't one she'd planned on seeing any time soon

"Is that alright?"

"I know. Don't worry, we can have a long talk tomorrow, I promise~"

>He really didn't need a breeze to roll in and blow them to the side while he was changing like he was in an anime or something
>Pulling on some thin, cloth pajamas, he dragged the curtain back, looking over to Bryce
>She was all curled up in bed, arms wrapped around her, causing her minimal wings to encompass her, while she tucked her legs in as best she could
>Sighing, Anon got up and walked over, gently removing what bits and pieces he could, leaving her in most of her clothes, her belts and shoes on the side of her bed
>Then, he pulled the blankets up over her before he crawled under his own, drifting off to sleep as well

>While it shone brighter and brighter, she lost her connection, her magic forced entirely out as the magic of her Spirit flowed into the space around her
>A light surged from the top of the crystal, and then a silhouetted figure began to float free
>Whoa, it was big!
>Had she gotten some sort of Lion or something?
>Small enough to manage would have been preferred but she could make it work
>It didn't matter what it was, after all!
>As it rose higher, emerging from the light and the artifact, it spread it's limbs, arms looking long and thin-to-toned, sporting hands at the end
>Maybe it was a kind of monkey?
>It's legs rose up as well, similar to the arms, but thicker, obviously
>She hadn't seen a tail yet, though, so just what was it?
>It floated there for a moment or two more before the light faded, her Spirit drifting down onto their feet
>Just two feet
>Wait, what?
>Well, it definitely didn't resemble a bird, so just what exactly-
>She didn't get a chance to hypothesize any more as the light faded away entirely, letting her see her Spirit

>Anon wasn't sure how, but he knew one thing, he had died
>While the details were a bit fuzzy, he knew it had sucked, too
>Still, as he left this mortal coil, his vision going black, he'd seen what almost looked like a hand
>It had been blurry and colorful, hard to make out, but he'd reached for it
>Then, the world turned into a blaze of light that slowly disappeared, though he wasn't blinded by it, oddly
>In fact, he felt pretty great!
>That was when he saw the hundreds of...people(?) in front of him, sitting in what looked to be the audience section of a large theatre or some such thing
>He wasn't really focused on the building so much as the fact that apparently he was at some sort of animal-based masquerade
That, or it's some kind of a knock-off Harry Potter convention.
>He said aloud, looking about until his eyes settled on what looked like a large Puma
>It
>No, wait
>She, most definitely a she, was staring at him, wide-eyed
>She was also wearing the fancy robes and belts and what-not that the others were wearing
>When he looked down to see if he was wearing the same, and saw he was, in fact, in a kind of 'suit' he realized just what was going on
Ohhh, I get it, I'm dreaming!
>He guessed he'd been wrong about the whole 'dieing' thing
>Man dreams were trippy
>Looking out again to the now very confused-looking crowd, Anon shrugged, and moved a leg back slightly
>Well, he'd always wanted to try this
>Running forwards, he leaped, expecting to crowd surf, only to disappointingly see them move to the sides to avoid him
>The one thing that was about to catch him now was the ground and, as he fell towards it, he had brief thought
>How long did you have to fall before you woke-

>None of the other Spirits so far had been like that!
>As she peered over the edge of the stage to the strange, now-unconscious monkey Spirit, as well as did most everyone else who could see him, she felt a large hand on her shoulder
>Looking back, she realized it was the school's Headmaster
"Come with me. I need to have a talk with you."
>He said, before turning, walking towards the far end of the stage and, from there, an open door.
>As she nervously followed along, she heard him speak, and her Spirit's body lifted up from the ground, floating after them
>Stepping through the door, she wondered just what the Headmaster had in store for her.
>This couldn't be good.

CHAPTER TWO

>She took a seat in a chair in front of a large, gnarled oaken desk while the headmaster sat on the opposite side
>He gently lowered her Spirit Animal down into what looked somewhat like a circular basket with a puffy blanket padding the inside
>A few, circular crystals floated above it
>With her mysterious Spirit resting safely, the headmaster raised a hand into the air, catching a small vial floating by
>He spoke into it, sealed the vial with an equally small cork, and then released it
>Her eyes followed it as it flew off, through a hole in the wall, and away
>Then her focus returned to the headmaster, especially so since she realized that he was looking at her
S-So...what did you want to talk to me about?
>He raised a brow
Sir!
"It's about what you summoned, Ms. Quille"
My...Spirit, sir? I know he's not exactly par for the course, but is he really strange enough that you had to talk to me personally?
"Ms. Quille, do you what a Human, is?"
No? Sir?
"Humans are very rare finds. They are not like the usual animals we summon and bond with, they are entirely...unique, we shall say. They are not typically beholden to the same rules as most Spirits are. The magic they bring tends to be...odd."

Wait, really? How powerful is he?
"It's not about the power, Ms. Quille, it's about the unknown, and how we're unable to anticipate it in the case the worst should happen. Still, keep in mind, he IS yours. He is bound to you and must obey your commands."
>He said, gesturing to the lightly-glowing collar around the Human's neck

O-Oh yeah? I hadn't really noticed so I guess if you say so then I could-

"You're welcome, Ms. Quille. I'll help him through the door, but I leave getting him dressed, and the rest, to you."
>She nodded, and went up to the door, the design now matching that of the door to her room

For now, perhaps? I had an idea that got stuck in my head, so I wrote this, and some of Chapter Three, up to get it out and see what people thought about it. It'd probably be a bit rough to do two different stories at the same time, or at least, more time-consuming. Still, I also like the premise and possibilities with this setting, so I figured I'd put it out there and let people say what they wanted about it. Share thoughts and all that.
