I think this canon is stupid, if that was the case they would be localized entirely to one area, instead of a widespread plague. I think it works better as just that hasbio rushed to market with a faulty product and once their problems became clear many were abandoned, others ran away because they wanted to mate, and others simply got lost by mistake then couldn't figure out how to get home.

Despite their high mortality rate in the wild they reproduce extremely quickly and can eat just about anything, their social nature makes them join into groups easily which can divide labor on a level more organized than most animals. Also I like the idea that while abusers are common, just as common are people who go out of their way to help ferals which helps keep them from being wiped out.

I feel like a big problem with a lot of head canons is they make fluffies so stupid that it doesn't make any sense that they thrive despite it.

I've wanted to write up something like an in-universe science text book delving into some of the things you're talking about, studying various fluffy herds in the wild as the author realizes he's made a terrible mistake writing a doctoral thesis on fluffy ecology.

There's a lot of potential ideas to mine there. It's not the fluffies' look cute that makes everyone want to hug or abuse them, it's their ability to talk. Abusers and fluffies can communicate with each other in ways you can't do with animals. The fluffies can plead for mercy, cry out in pain, beg the abuser to stop.

If fluffies could not talk then they would be just like animals, and that would make them much more boring for the fandom and abusers.

It's just not that they can talk. If fluffies did not have the persona, intelligence and innocence of a child, that would also make the whole fluffy phony phenomena less interesting and would die out fast.

My headcanon is that since the fluffies were designed to eat whatever humans eat, or more specifically, whatever ponies eat, their digestion is rather robust. While it's flawed as fuck, this versatility allows the fluffies to survive on all kinds of food, including the rotten garbage ferals often have to resort to.

Next to their fast breeding, their co-operation and sharing has classically been their best trump card for survival. Especially with the dams being immobile during pregnancy, the fluffies wouldn't stand a chance if they didn't have at least each other to care for them.

That's a pretty big leap in logic, mate. Is it because I mentioned abandonment and foal eating? In my head, those are rare occurrences, but still occurrences in desperate times. I'm not a fan of it, but I can recognize the plausibility of it. When it becomes the rule as opposed to the exception is where I draw the line.

Not all fluffies are gonna be complete dickheads. The entire species would die out in that case. But they do have the brains of preschoolers thrown into a Lord of the Flies scenario. Bad shit will happen. Smarties are gonna take ridiculous leaps in logic, and their herds are gonna take it for gospel. That's when the bad shit happens.

Where fluffies are currently, in my head, feral herds are able to have easier times surviving. They know to make brown/green/whatever foals and fluffies "nummie finders." They know how to attend to dams, most ferals can tell the difference between a "smarty friend" and a syndrome smarty, etc.

However, things like predators, humans, and harsh environments/seasonal changes would keep the population down. I prefer my fluffies as kind of "happy go unlucky" creatures where no matter how hard they try, bad shit still happens. Herds are gonna wind up in the wrong yard. Winters are gonna be harsh. A strip mall is gonna be put down wherever the fluffies live and rob them of their home. It's just kinda life for them, and to me that makes the moments where they do succeed all the more triumphant.

Anyone got links to some lengthy, well written stories? Gonna be away from my PC for a few days and I'm kinda itching for some fluffy stories. Feral herds are a big plus, but I'll take anything that's actually well written.

Read parts 1-3 of that, it's about a kid who adopts a fluffy without really considering what's involved in caring for a pet which leads to some problems and it's ultimately returned to a shelter because he can't deal with it. This sort of thing happens to real pets all the time. Every year many rabbits are dumped on shelters a few weeks after Easter.

Did you know that guinea pigs were domesticated by people living in the Andes as a pet/food source. Because they subsist on vegetable scraps they could be fed food that humans weren't going to be eating anyway, they're easily fattened up then eaten, but also a good pet for children in the meantime.

I had an idea for a story about fluffies filling that niche in a post peak oil dark age society where acquiring food has become more of a challenge.

Agreed, I like the idea of cannibalizing foals as something done only by fluffies that WILL die from starvation if they don't do it, and having it be emotionally devastating to the fluffy doing it and any others that witness it.

Although I don't mind stories about the adventures of cannibal fluffies, as long as its shown that they're abnormal.
