FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of http://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory and confidence.

Not that person, but a few things:

Compositionally, the picture is pretty dry. I get the gist that the picture is meant to be simplistic, but you have a vast majority of the scene as blank space (monotone dirt). Look at pic related for a real-life example of an interesting shot of your idea.

With respect to line weight, you should look at the following graphic for gaining a sense of how line weight should be applied to various elements: http://i.imgur.com/c2k4FF6.png

I feel like there may be something off with the perspective. I'm not sure if the grass is intended to disappear to a single vanishing point along your horizon, but the acorn looks significantly larger than expected when comparing against a tree root nearby from a (seemingly) large tree.
>>
>>11331167
yeah my "breaks" are always like a month too.

>>11331130
It's a good start, but you need to vary the line weight if you're using thick lines. For example, the fluff can have thinner line weight than the body to indicate a physically lighter material, to perhaps be subject to a light source, etc. Look at the Imgur link here: >>11331362

I don't know if you have underlying construction for the Arcanine character, but the facial features don't wrap around a spherical shape. Look at his eyes as an example; they lie flat. This problem extends to other features like the ears. The perspective isn't extreme enough where one ear should face the viewer and the other away.

The neck's connection to the torso is unclear; you have his left shoulder angled high into his neck, whereas there is a more pronounced dip on the right.

The shading is inconsistent since you don't have a clear light source. Refer to pic attached so that you can see how the positioning of the light source affects the lighting on the subject.

And here's my last art today. I posted that at e621.net and got bombed by dislikes. For me, I think my art REALLY got better. Is it because of the "humiliation" part?

I'm valuing every minute of my 2 weeks vacation to draw draw draw and get better. I'm so bad at coloring and especially shading. Any good Paint Tool Sai tutorials for shading?

>>11345516
My initial guess is that she's way too stiff to perform that movement naturally. Her legs should not be glued together; give some space to the stance. To be clear, is she supposed to be on her toes?

Additionally, her knees should mirror the swaying of the hips since they need to support the weight being unbalanced for each peak of the "sashay". The hips seem to rise without the knees following suit, making it look like she's swiveling in a circle where she's planted instead (look at the knee level down by itself for a few loops and perhaps you'll see what I'm seeing). The motion needs to be more pronounced and fluid rather than subtle and limited to achieve the visual swinging effect.
>>
>>11345516
make the feet still, and the hips moving. Stand up and do what she's doing, you'll find out your feet at still, and your hips are moving.

Put some fluidity there. Otherwise, great animation and I'm sure it'll turn out great!

>>11346249
Thanks for the criticism I keep hearing that my drawing is too stiff but I don't really know how to avoid that.

I'm mostly learning animation through YouTube tutorials and reading some reddit forums. I'm not sure it's due to a small drawing tablet and limited drawing space (I'm drawing on a small dresser with the pc on it) or need to improve my skills.

For starters, you just can't go barging into an art thread asking for pointers when the pointers are listed directly in the OP's post, secondly; no one can really spoonfeed you all the way to a decent artist, you're gonna have to learn to build up by yourself.

Don't see any problem with the neck or, I assume, how her head is turned, heads can certainly turn that far around.

Upper body is also alright in size, could maybe be a bit bigger but I don't think that's the real problem. The bigger problem is how detached her torso is from her hips/butt due to that clothing you've got going on, along with some other things.

Also, be sure to add in body details as well, without them some of your shapes can get confusing. I'm all for minimal detail, too many lines bug me, but you still need enough to define what the viewer is looking at. Which means you need to pay attention to what the viewer IS seeing as well as what the viewer ISN'T seeing.

As an example, without being able to see the front of your figure in any way, it's easy for the mind to see the shapes you have that are defining her shoulder blades as breasts. Adjusting the positioning of her tail allows you to show more of your figure, giving the mind of the viewer an easier time of things with less confusion.

I'm genuinely having trouble with spines, but I'm gonna try to get the spine right because those clothing marks are important

Here a half-assed change based on your comment as a bump, I ended up shifting the whole butt and got rid of the curve. It's very quick since I'm a bit busy right now but the thread is on page 9 already, lmao, I'll look into the rest of the stuff you've mentioned later.

As for the head, I'll try to box it and the upper body I guess and check the angles.

I don't want to sound mean, but you're just trying to wing it and end up with lot's of issues

Figure-wise, the body shape is inconsistent and not very interesting. Boobs are just tacked on, knees zip up and down, shoulders appear and disappear, impossible hips due to missing hip bone, etc. Good stylized drawings still require solid understanding of anatomy, because you need gesture and gesture is backed by anatomy. You need some figure drawing practice.

Animation wise, chicken scratch lines that change line weight are distracting. Timing is non-existent.

Pose wise it's just a weird pose sway hips left and right. Most people spread their legs for it since having knees and feet glued together limits your hip mobility greatly, plus it's much harder to keep balance. Look at attached video or just look up hip sway gifs.

I'm not saying "give up", but use references and do studies, etc. animation is a lot of work.

Hey, Huion h420 fag from two-three threads ago.
Does anybody have advice on overcoming drawing anxiety when it comes to using a new tablet? My friends recently went into D&D and wanted me, the only few artists in that group, to draw their characters. I've been extremely out of it when it comes to art/anything else.
Any leads on decent art programs (other than SAI)? I find SAI far too confusing to use and Photoshop to be a laggy mess with the tablet.

I manned the fuck up, made a huge resolution to work with, and tried out SAI. This is about half an hour's work, most of it dealing with SAI's layout.
This is a small doodle without the use of reference images or poses.
What do you gents think?
>>
>>11337699
Perspective is kinda wonky, especially on the face and breasts, I can't tell if she's bending towards the dildo or not. Face looks like an enface drawing on a tilted surface, if her head is tilted down, then some of her features should elongate (like muzzle) and some get shorter (like ears). Also her shoulders are like 4 heads wide, it's usually too much, especially for an anthro female, and they're wider than her hips. This combined with a messed up facial perspective and her being muscular (I have nothing against that) gives her a bad tranny look.

But the main offender isn't the art, you missed the joke and made yourself look stupid (this happens), plus the focus of the image is a cruel kink and majority of people dislike those. You can actually get away with unpopular kinks as long as it's done well, not too gross and not in-your-face, otherwise just accept that most people don't share your kink.
>>
>>11374967
Thanks. I'm having trouble with the perspective and muzzles/mouths. I will try to fix that. I realized the shoulders look big after I uploaded the picture.

About the joke. English is not my native language and I didn't get the meaning behind it.

Yup. I'm into this kink. I read comments saying they dislike it because it's mean and what not. This is the point.

I think you are using the wrong colors for shading and lightening your objects.
The shadows look more like dirt spots instead of actual shade.

You shouldn't pick your colors on straight lines.
Instead, you should pick your colors in curves whilst you move the color bar.

I recolored a bit of your drawing as an example.

how do i add detail, i feel like once i add shading and highlights and the eyes the thing will look very bland.
>>
>>11395610
I don't think you should worry about details. If you don't get the basics right, details won't do shit. You can't polish a turd. Right now his right forearm is longer than his left one, for example, and thicker than the shoulder.

As far as details and texture, those are just light being reflected around, and failing to reach somewhere. So bumps on an orange are places where light doesn't reach, for example.

Painting texture therefore requires understanding of light and shadow. Of course, detailing everything would take forever, so focus on your focal point the most, and approximate.

I had some stuff saved, but it's on disconnected HDD right now

As far as I understand, basically there are two things you need to know: how to draw humans, and how mechanical doodads look like
Then you draw human gesture and fill it with mechanical parts, maybe add some armor plates/jets/wheels/etc.
For gundam-style (gee) robots you'll probably need to use oriental armors
For G1 transformers - car parts
For VOTOM mechs - tanks and military equipment
etc.

Here's a pic I have saved on this PC, a mech from Bubblegum Crisis with visible quadriceps and brachioradialis
>>
>>11401361
Also that obviously applies more to "realistic" humanoid mechs

For less humanoid mechs you probably need functioning parts from construction equipment and stuff
Megaman-style robots is probably a matter of character design, megaman robots are based on all kinds of things that are unrelated to robotics

You should put more effort in your linework, try putting some weight here and there, even though tin lines do tend to give colors precedence.

You should also try to refine your "aesthetic sense" many of the lines in that drawing are placed in a way that might look right to you now, but are grotesque and repulsive to others, it's a thing that many fetish (but non-fetish too) artists tend to have.

Study anatomy, look at what professional do (no matter how good they are and how far you feel from their level) and try to draw from reality as well, it will improve your perception of beauty and, no matter how shitty the results might be, it will always have a good impact on your more personal and toony drawings.

Try also doing this exercise over here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HR59yFZ7Y

It's very effective to understand relationship between lines and body parts. Do it every day, even just 20 pictures will be fine, don't go with 30 seconds right away if you don't feel fine.

Also I'd like some critique myself, not on the picture I posted here tho, maybe I'll upload the one I don't like later. For the curious here's my FA in the meantime:

Thats one thing im struggling with bad since i dont have software that lets me do varying line thicknesses easily

Thanks for all the advice! Im always in desperate need for it.
>>
>>11408891

Don't study anatomy alone, tends to make you stiff and chillingly structual which would be a shame considering you have a fluid approsch to line and shapes. Along with anatomy try and stufy a way to REPRESENT it. Put some gesture in your practice schedule and stick to basic shape structures before diving into the details. Start with squares, circles, triangles and try not to make them too stiff, curve their straight lines, smoothen their angles and when you do it try to think about what you're representing. Is this a rough character? A dangerous one? He's he relaxed, cheerful? What lines represent him the best.

Telling you this because you seem to have a subconcious grasp of such things, but apply them without realizing it. Learn to control iy and it will pay off.

These were my 2 cents.
>>
>>11409509

That is rather troubling, but you can still try and do it by going over a libe more than once, like you would do with a pencil. I suggest you to go on paper, at least to train yourself, I would suggest the same even if you had said softwares. Of course, if you could get them that'd be a great hand.

And don't worry, if you like it keep at it, even if you're not good. Art is good for your spirit.
>>

>>11408015

I have a question tho. How did you start doing commisions? Did you wait untill people approached you? Or did you just put it in your profile info?

I'm looking into doing commisions myself. But i dont know how i should approach it.
>>
>>11400927
Looks good, the dog anthro looks kinda stiff.

>>11405332
Cute.
I would advice you to try and show the hands, instead of hiding them.
>>
>>11400927
Work on making things looking more 3D by using construction and having more consistent & proper angles/perspective, e.g. on the human guy right pauldron and right knee seem to be turned towards the center of body. Also, most parts of armor seem really flat the lines are straight. And pay more attention to proportions, like the dog guy's left shoulder is wider than his right.

Try to eventually ditch anime faces as a crutch at some point. Faces are hard, but you need to know how they work to get good range of faces and facial expressions.

I don't like dog's face. Anthro heads usually have different proportions. Nose bridge is too thin, muzzle is probably too long for this slight angle, weird ear placement, etc. Study furry heads.

People don't stand with their legs spread like that. It's uncomfortable. That's how you do jumping jacks.

Overall it's actually not bad, you just have to grind figure drawing now. Also avoid using any sorts of lined paper in the future.
>>
Badump
>>
>>11409597
Im thinking of trying a 3 line method
First line for a general guide
And then two more lines to set a variable thickness around the guide line
Maybe that will solve that problem, albiet in a more labor intensive way
>>
>>11409729
Thanks a lot, still working to improve.
I waited a while before accepting commissions, you have to build yourself a little audience before, otherwise you will not get the attention you need. First I did some trades and even some free requests with and for artists I respected, even gifts sometimes. If you're wondering why that's because sometimes, if you get the right people, you'll be shared. They might either post the drawing you made for them in your gallery (along with a link), write a journal about you or simply talk and share you through private channels, which is always good to get yourself known. Beware tho, especially with gifts, make sure you do it with people that you both like and is not too much above your level, otherwise the chances to be ignored are higher. When I saw I started getting enough people around me I started talking about commissions, then I accepted 5 dollars sketches to see if someone would ask, through this I even learned there were customers who would have paid more for higher quality pics, then, when I was confident enough, I accepted actual commishes.

Although there's a layer of cinism to this whole operation I want you to know that I did it with love, making sure I had fun and that the people who were following had fun as well, so get passionate about it too if you can, without ever putting yourself aside, it will help a lot.

(pic related) Don't feel discouraged by these tiny corrections, always show someone (possibly a friend that draws as well) your gesture to have feedback about it. I did the same everyday (we gestured together and then sent each others the result) and I got BASHED hard, but it paid off with time.

Take it as some time to just relax and enjoy the shapes of the body, by putting some brain into it yes, but without stretching it too far and without falling in love with the results, learn to fall in love with the process instead. And remember: you just started. Mistakes should not be a surprised, but mandatory, what would you learn from this otherwise?

I'm very happy to see you're doing this. Keep it up, keep it up, keep ip it up!
>>
>>11415244

Oh sorry I forgot: I made an example right next to yours to show you how strokes and lines should flow with each others. Having someone else's result right next to yours can help you see where you got your own stuff right. Of course I didn't have the photo and I'm NOT as good as proko, I myself am learning, but it's something.

Also if we newbies don't help each others, who will?

Inkscape has a draw tool that allows you to use tapered lines easily. Though, it is somewhat limited in other areas.

>>
>>11415244
>Don't feel discouraged by these tiny corrections
not at all, I appreciate the criticism and the encouragement! The one caveat I'd add is that I feel pretty rushed when I do these, so I'm not really able to be that careful with my strokes, yet. I think that'll probably go away with practice. Still, it'd pay to do some more careful, deliberate gesture drawings without a timer, too, so I can work on the things you pointed out.
>>
>>11415608

That's quite a very good a idea! And try this: always start a drawing with gesture. Be it figure drawing, a drawing from your imagination or whatever. It helps a lot! Gesture characters, backgrounds and slowly add details as you dwelve into it.

I'm glad you feel encouraged. It's a good sign that you got what it takes. Go, go, go!

How weird is it that /trash/ is actually less trash than /ico/ for art critique?

I've been doing a bunch of scribble sketches such as pic related, I can't do smooth lineart cos I have spastic shakes, so sketch-lyf for me!

How do I git gud at lineart and colouring? I hate digital so far, it is way harder than just pencil drawing!

>>11442985
Dunno how to correctly express this, but an upward then downward bounce would work while she turns slightly.
As with anything, always exaggerate movements when animating.
>>
>>11443249
>>
>>11442985
you need to think more about how her movements would actually affect the hair

those bangs hanging own in front wouldn't move across her nose from a slight turn of her head, and inertia plus air resistance would cause it to lag behind in the opposite direction anyway. that is, if the hair isn't just clinging to her face there'd be a bit of a dragging motion where the face would "lead" the hair

the same is true of her ponytail, although what you have now isn't as obviously wrong (actually you have a pretty good movement for when the hair settles in place). the same idea would apply here, the hair will lag behind the head's movement, slightly (but since it's on the back of her head it'd be pulled to the left, from the viewer's perspective, rather than to the right)
>>
>>11443228
>scribble sketches
you do a good job of making them clear and easy to read, despite the scribbled appearance. when I scribble-sketch the result has a lot of ambiguous forms. In your case I think you could use your sketches to inform the weight of your lines as you ink over them.

>I can't do smooth lineart cos I have spastic shakes
have you tried using a stabilizer? A lot of art programs have them built in these days, and there's also stuff like lazy nezumi if your program of choice doesn't have one (although LN doesn't work with everything)

also, do your shakes affect all of your movement or mainly just your fine motor skills? if it's the latter you could try relying a lot more on your elbow and shoulder (which is good rule of thumb to follow anyway)

>How do I git gud at lineart and colouring? I hate digital so far, it is way harder than just pencil drawing!
what do you hate about it?

Roast my body practice
>>
>>11443544
Thanks anon,
My shakes are constant and subtle in fine motor, with occasional small spasms.
I haven't tried using a stabiliser, so I'll give that a whirl, tho in honesty I think I'm gonna twitch a little no matter what, so might just have to cheat and use waypoint/vector style lineart maybe.

I really don't like the lack of control I feel I have in digital. With a pencil or ballpoint pen, I know how hard to press, what strokes do what etc. But with digital I feel like I haven't got the right brushes set up, or I'm drawing with the wrong size brush, or too small etc. It never looks how I expect it to as I'm drawing!
I feel like very basic initial set up is something I need to work out.
I'm using cs4 (potato computer can't handle any better) and its laborious as fuck!
>>
>>11443581
It is alright - you might wanna try using the construction shapes on the waist, hips and each thigh, just to ensure you're capturing the right volume for each 3d shape.
It might help make the body seem more full and less flat
>>
>>11443939
You can usually crank up stabilizers pretty high, so chances are with the right settings it'd be able to mask the effect of your shakes. The digitizer on my tablet produces significant wobble with slow enough strokes, and a stabilizer eliminates it almost completely.

>But with digital I feel like I haven't got the right brushes set up, or I'm drawing with the wrong size brush, or too small etc. It never looks how I expect it to as I'm drawing!
Ah, I can't help you there. I rarely customize my brush settings and usually just get used to the defaults.

I think the pose would be better this way, though this is still subjective since I'm not professional and awful and criticizing.

Great, but you need to work on cleaning your lineart. Also, it's not drawn straight. It needs to be balanced and both sides equal and fit. It looks like its lower body is about to leave and move away by its own.

Instagram, twitter, pixiv, furaffinity and weasyl if you're a furry, and inkbunny if you're a furry and a pedo.
Tumblr is one of the best places to post art though, you should try figuring it out.

Thanks, but isnn't pixiv Japanese only?
>>
>>11457571
It has semi-crappy English support and a handful of western artists use it
Japs are xenophobic but they need those money from premium accounts, so you won't get booted of the site for not being a jap
>>
>>11457571
Also pixiv is crappy like all Japanese websites, but it's probably the only website with lax content rules
>>
>>11457666
Is it okay to post my art with English text on it there?
>>
>>11457954
It's not against the rules, again, some western artists use Pixiv, but you'll probably have smaller audience, since main audience of Pixiv is Japanese and even westerners search Pixiv using Japanese tags

How do I fix my proportions and smooth out linework? Get some kind of a style? I know the paintjob on the right is extra shitty btw, I want to focus mostly on drawing, anyway.
>>
>>11460116
Okay, first, let's get style out of the way, it's not something you should be worried about at this level, and it's something that I believe people develop naturally.

Second, about the linework, it's mostly just practice. Learn to do lines in a single, confident stroke. Lines on the original look chicken-scratchy, don't do that if you do. Also the whole original drawing looks pretty small (judging by the thickness of pencil lines), work on a bigger sheet. First exercises from draw-a-box can help.

Proportions: practice drawing from real-life or photo references, do studies.

Also, don't try to wing it, draw gesture and 3D construction first. To draw these you need to be somewhat familiar with human anatomy (nothing too serious, just on an artist level).

Ideally just pick up a figure drawing book, a bunch of photos with naked dudes, and go practice.

Pose looks very stiff, drawing looks two-dimensional, ya need start studying figure drawing, anon
>>
>>11463381
Okay, I'll get on that also.
>>
So it's true that there's no point in worrying about your lines being straight before moving on past basic shapes? That they'll just get better over time by default?
>>
I'm surprised this thread is still up. I thought it would of been died 2 days ago
>>
>>11464687
yes it's true. Straight lines arent a major factor and that sort of thing gets better the more you draw. Focusing on your lines being straight so much just takes the fun out of it

This may sound like a really dumb question, but is this how figure drawing is supposed to look like? I'm confused about how people bend their arms and such and where legs are supposed to connect with the hips.

Too many straight edges and corners. You're trying to capture the energy and motion of the gesture.

Stick figures are far too stiff.
>>
>>11469371
And stop chicken scractching. Draw with long strokes.

Your hand confidence is shit but you need to accept that you suck right now and practice so you do become better
>>
>>11471530
Almost everything in this picture is aligned along surface of the drawing, it makes the picture look flat
Start using construction if you aren't using it
>>
>>11471546
I kinda hate /ic/'s loomising at people
Loomis has different books of different topic, each of them is quite big, this can be disorienting

Also I wish people would stop treating Loomis as be-all and end-all for figure drawing, there are other authors like Hampton or Bridgman. I've heard multiple times already that some people just didn't click with Loomis, but some other book worked for them.

>>11402232
ill admit i dont exactly know what this is supposed to be a pic of, but imo the linearts fine, its the shading im not down with. The colors are way better than before, but the smudgy tool is just awful. Please look into a more cell shaded like technique. Doesnt have to have razor sharp edges, just. Not This.
>>
>>11402779
>>11402790
short haired person's boobs are too close together.
Maybe try some minor (MINOR) multiply-gradient to help add some spice to those colors.
try using thinner lines, and even making those lines colored.

very cute! two things though.
1: Try to make your lines more consistent.
2: Try adding some depth to your picture. This pic is how to add folds in a ribbon. I think it'd help a lot.

>What would be a good way to remedy stiffness?
Here's a relatively nice video that might give a better understanding of what gesture is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HR59yFZ7Y

You can practice gesture drawing using timed practice mode on http://www.quickposes.com/
But I strongly recommend to study anatomy a bit, most of the gesture is formed by musculature
Also studying anatomy (via figure drawing books) will answer your questions on how people bend their arms or where legs connect with the hips.
