FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of http://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory and confidence.

I don't have much. Drew that bat girl last thread and it still isn't done.
Anyone got some resources on cartooning/cartoon-style drawing? I'm trying to do something more like that for little doodles. Pic related, I guess. It's about the best I can do right now.
>>
>>11482313
If it is any consolation, to someone like me it seems like a huge improvement in a very small amount of time. I'm literally stick figure tier at the moment and that seems like really rapid progress to me.
I fear >>11478431 happening so much that I tend to fear picking up a pencil.
>>
>>11486164
If you don't draw, you'll stay where you're at forever. The reason that person never improved is because they didn't study and probably also didn't draw regularly.

Sorry for the ultra, ultra shitty pics. Not sure they are clear enough to be useful for anything. Shit phone and I don't draw on the computer yet.
For reference I started drawing around July and these are just exercises from the Bert Dodson beginner's book. Just copying these examples out of the book felt almost hopeless so the idea of drawing from my mind just seems like voodoo.
Admittedly I'm not done with the book yet so going at a slow pace.
>>
>>11486694
It's going to feel that way when you first start out with anything. When you're first learning to cook, you shouldn't expect to make a 5-star meal. Keep reading and doing exercises, draw every day for at least a few hours, and don't beat yourself up over the art not being great right off the bat.
I can tell you're at least trying and willing to learn. Have you looked through any other books? Maybe try to study the work of artists you like, see what their process is. Some do tutorials, videos, or livestreams. Even if you can't draw at their level yet, it'll give you more insight.

I think something like >>11478431 happens only when people either have exceptionally poor sense of aesthetics (sounds pretentious, but what I mean is, to most people it looks neither like a skilled drawing nor like major improvement) or they just don't want to improve

Honestly, if you don't like how it looks and don't want to get stuck like that, you've already avoided that particular pitfall

Only thing you probably need to get over, is

The charts where there's literally no improvement or they somehow get worse have to be people with some form of visual agnosia (or maybe even autism). They've obviously convinced that there's no problem and even think they got better.

This whole drawing thing for me has been interesting in the last 4 months I've been doing it. I've never had a real interest in any of this until I started talking to a deal of artists in a couple of Discord servers.

It's been difficult, that I can honestly say. Hands and feet are my biggest issue right now, and although I know I shouldn't let it get to me, after seeing all of these other artists' works it unfortunately happens from time to time.

I just feel it's still too soon to see if I wanna get more serious about all of this or just go into it as a hobby
>>
>>11477840

Howv do I motivate myself to get gud when my main reason for improving my art is because my specific fetish doesn't get enough art? All I find myself drawing is lewd, and I can't exactly practice that in the open.
>>
>>11498313
Draw regular pics when you're in the open, and turn those pics into lewds when you're alone? I don't know, that's a tough one.
>>
>>11498313
i'm autistic about people watching me draw -anything- and its hindered my improvement. dont get me wrong, ive definitely gotten better, just slower than most folks imo.
If you can, try and do benign practices while people are around, even if its not full pics. Its good to keep that muscle memory learning. It'll help your future lewds.

That's an improvement over stick figures, though I don't know about "too much" contour, there's no specific way to do gesture.

Lives still look scratchy though. Do you chicken scratch or it's just the pen?
>>
>>11478431
This is literally impossible if you
>get critiques from people who are actually GUD and not random ass-kissers from DA
>Draw literally every day and make thousands of shit drawings
>learn construction and how not to symbol draw
>>
>>11504823
I still do the chicken scratching as a habitual thing, I usually try to challenge myself to go for not trying to do it, but that's more a double edged sword by that point.

this is a huge improvement from the stick figures anon.
i dont really do gesture drawings as a practice, so im sort of speaking out my ass here, but if i were you, i'd study the understanding of what each shape represents, and how it takes up the space it does. idk exactly what im trying to say but i drew up a lil thing to try and explain it.
make sure you're doing those warm up exercises! they helped me a ton even if they aren't impressive to look at afterward.

I'd say to practice a bit more before trying. Focus on line quality, as well as anatomy (especially hands and feet) and creating appealing forms. I'm not so great at it myself, but that's what I'd suggest.
But putting together a comm sheet and posting it places wouldn't hurt any either.

Can someone tell me how color and shading works?
>>
>>11565778
You should learn how to draw better lineart first before you worry about colouring and shading.
>>
>>11566017
fucking this. no level of coloring and shading can save you from bad lineart
>>
Do any of you guys have like a plan when you get at the level you wanted? Like a comic or something.
>>
>>11568563
I never really thought about that

I used to be into video games and ended up seriously studying programming, because I wanted to "make videogames"

But post "indie boom" (AAA tools released for free, Humble Bundle/Steam greenlight happening, "indie scene" forming, etc.) my spark for gamedev has faded pretty badly

I haven't tried my hand at writing and very insecure about even approaching it so probably no comic for me.

I guess in the end I'll eventually just indulge in drawing degenerate and obscure fetishes for myself.

Everything below the waist looks weird
Skirts don't usually behave like that unless they have some rigid frame beneath them
Also it looks like she's standing on her toes while bending over. Is she bending over? Or the viewer is above her, hence the rigid-looking skirt, but then she's sitting?

before you jump onto shading, you need to master your line work because shading a bad line art is like painting a broken house (you're just wasting time on a broken foundation)

so if you don't mind i try fixing it a little, the legs are too short for the subject so they appear like they are 1-2 meters away from the character so i crop it ,from that angle you could see the 2 eye so i take my libetry to draw it but it could just be a stylistic choice so i made 2 version of the drawing also the tongue look like is rip it from the mouth and attached on the side of the face so i redraw it in the second picture , the dress doesn't make any sense it it look like a wide open umbrella and the face doesn't have a well defined contour so her cheek fur looks like is coming out of her neck but beside that is a pretty good drawing and god damn Delphox deserve more love to many Braixen out here not enough Delphox

>>

I've worked on an Animal Crossing, Zelda, and Tower Girls game and in all three cases the artists went from full enthusiasm to no contact within a month if not a week. And I've programmed quickly. The Zelda game particularly slogged out for a very long time and we even almost finished all the assets for a demo before finally dying too.

Some stuff I can see:
>ear placement is way out of perspective considering she's almost perfectly facing the viewer
>right arm has unusual thickness about it that also looks disproportionate relative to other arm
>tip of the breast looks malformed; if you're trying to draw the contour of a nipple there, I think the placement is off
>belly button alignment is off-center to her torso (and likely too high)
>left hand is unclear; if the thumb is meant to be in front with the rest of the hand wrapping around her waist, it needs clearer representation of such
>gap between thighs should be a tad smaller
>big problem: one leg is resting on the knee, the other the shin; you also would be more likely to see the legs flair out in relatively equal angles opposite of one another relative to her vertical center

For Christ's sake, get some respect for yourself and your drawings

Don't use lined paper
Don't use pen for "utility" drawing, use pencil and use pen only to put finishing touches, erase the helper lines or draw them faintly
Draw bigger, e.g. on A4, that way you won't get away with drawing "vaguely"
While drawing on bigger scale, start switching from "stick figure" to 3D construction

You don't need special art supplies for that, just a regular pencil, maybe a polymer eraser and some sheets of paper. You can get that for under ten bucks or even for free.
