A kobold society is referred to as a, "mine," and they get a bonus on Profession(Miner) checks. In addition, one of the source books, Draconomicon or Races of the Dragon, one of the two, actually had a quote from a dwarf talking about how a kobold mine in full swing is more the epitome of hard work than anything a dwarven mine could do.

In addition, they live underground, so the only monsters they have to worry about are the ones that dig and, outside the elemental plane of earth, Burrow speeds are fairly rare.

As far as goblins go, they don't do any of that. They live aboveground, where all they have is rocks, sticks, and whatever they can steal. Kobolds are, usually, fairly content to just leave everyone else alone; I believe the term, "xenophobic," comes up in one of the books' descriptions of them?

So, yeah. That being said, again, I may just be going off of material that no one else is using; the Monster Manual describes kobolds as being between 2' and 2'6" tall, and slightly hunched over, and that's been all but discarded as well.

I always chalked idiotic behavior up to things like Pathfinder's "Jester" trait, and evidence of kobolds working to amuse or placate their superiors (Which is everyone, -4 strength means there's never enough porn of kobolds getting raped) whereas I chalk up their art of recycled and repurposed gear to a sort of hasty pragmatism. If you can make something fill a new roll without needing to completely break it down into its raw resources, then why not?

They can make their own stuff very easily but those idiot humans that fell into one of your spike pits had shit you can punch some holes into and turn into a helmet. Artistically it can also play up how Kobolds are friggin' small, 2-3 feet in height, a bonus if you don't have a direct frame of reference.

I don't know, the xenophobic thing might make them distrust things that aren't of kobold craftsmanship. At the very least, I'd assume that they'd reforge it to fit them without changing the shape too much.

Jester makes sense for kobolds attempting to fit into non-kobold societies, but I seem to remember an illustration from a book, Cityscape maybe, showing a group of kobolds robbing a place. One's hanging out of a vent, strangling a woman with a garrote wire, while the other two are taking all the money. That best illustrates how kobolds deal with the whole, "tiny, weak, and fragile," thing. Namely, "numbers, stealth, and surprise," respectively. Also, the bonus on Craft(Trapmaking) means that their home mines, and probably as much of the land surrounding that they care to go out into, are going to be literal death traps.

Attacking a kobold society isn't going to be a case of walking up to the door, pounding on it until someone gets up the nerve to answer, and then steam-rolling them into compliance. That door's probably going to have some kind of trigger built into it that fires darts from the wall around it into you, and that's just the door. Ram it down and you're probably going to walk through half a dozen other traps in the ten feet past it. Even civilized kobolds will likely only be placating for as long as they need to be, but whatever tenement or ghetto they live in will likely be as dangerous as the nearby dungeon.

Now that's a thought for the on-the-fly mission book: Local politician needs a letter delivered to the kobold neighborhood, but the post doesn't deliver there anymore; are you adventurers bad enough to walk into kobold territory and deliver the mail?

Oh yeah, when they got numbers and a good set-up on their side they can be scary. I just meant in situations where they don't have numeric superiority or a serious advantage they might go about clowning or groveling instead.

I figure Kobolds might resort to scrap-gear if they're in a situation where time is of the essence and resources are low. If a place is often hit by outside invaders frequently enough, it might be easier to repurpose some battlefield salvage when proper gear falls into disrepair.

I'm not really saying either is the definitive, 100% every time way to go, just stating the exceptions to what I'd consider the norm for kobolds to justify some alternate traits and silly pics.

Yet we are, spending the last five posts discussing what is actually super simple "you shouldn't do this it's bad" kind of stuff. As usual when this subject comes up the "hurr that's black and white!!!" retards come out of the woodwork to try and justify why they think their thinly-veiled murder fantasies should be celebrated and legally recognized. That's stupid, it deserves to be ridiculed just like the morons who spout it.

Just to reiterate what I've said several times since you dumb motherfuckers are having so much trouble: I truly do hate stupid people, it's the one bait that will always get me to respond, and I mean I really, really actually hate stupid fucks. Not "I don't like that haha" kind of hate, I mean actual, seething hatred that keeps me up at night thinking of all the idiots that are out there at that exact moment being dumb.
