They exist, but every player I've seen falls into one of two camps: the first is heavily (and I mean HEAVILY) low spectrum IRL, to the point playing with them might be a legal and ethical grey area given the creepy child-like aura they give off. It's just a short hand, and there is kind of this weird wiggle room where "RP" fits between than using "roleplay" itself.

Also it depends on where you learned about roleplaying, from what I've noticed. I learned about roleplaying on Furcadia, and everyone uses RP outside of places where the shorthand slang would stick out like a sore thumb. Characters making guides, rules, things like that. At the same time, a friend of mine started roleplaying on a forum, and outside of casual chatter will always use "roleplay."
