I wouldn't really suggest forcing characters into a setting unless it has something to do with their personality. Unless you come up with something really juicy its best to leave fantasy to the elves and medeival to the knights etc.

A good example of this was in the hmofa thread where there was a hyena story in roman times. The writer knew his history really well and made the story strong and feel not forced. I wish I had a screen cap but thats a pretty good example

I try to make that clear in my stories.
