You need to start their special moves yourself, give them attack boosters and know when to switch them out so their abilities will kick in, like some will block certain attacks or some can poison/stun the opponent, for example.

Busters in particular was relatively popular I think, double that because of the free Gettogumi update that added a lot of bosses to fight.
I think it's a bit repetitive because the game is instance-based, but the boss fights are nice and give you an option of difficulty to work with after clearing them for the first time. Obviously they want you to play with friends.

It's not really complicated, but the gameplay is different from the usual RPG. You play support, so you're charged with targeting yokai, firing off soultimates, swapping around what yokai to use, purifying, item usage, and making sure they don't die violent death.

the US/EU got the second game (Bony Spirits (Ganso)/Fleshy Souls (Honke)), which basically retcons a majority of events that occured in YW1, so that is a generally good starting point.

Whelp, it looks like I might need to get both games then. Shouldn't be that much of an issue since both games are relatively cheap on Amazon. And if the new game comes out on the 29th of September, that gives me time to play the last two before getting into the new one.
I did so last year with Pokemon. I had not played a Pokemon game since the original Gold and Silver and I had not even played a handheld system since GameBoy Color. But a co-worker told me I had to get back into it because Sun and Moon were coming out and I was far, far behind. He ended up selling me his 3DS as well as his copies of Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. I played them and was hooked again. Pre-ordered Sun and Moon and played the shit out of them. Hell, I am trading on Sun right now as I type this.

So, based on reviews and what others have said, I may have another moment with this series.

they spawn in a specific spot IIRC and are exclusive depending on the version you have. Gold is Honke/Fleshy Souls whereas silver is Ganso/Bony Spirits.

what makes them unique is that they have a different skill compared to the default version. For example, regular Noway (wall)'s original skill has him block the moment he is switched into battle. The 'shiny' version of him has endurance as a skill, making him endure one knockout.
Another example is Nagatha, who's original skill just makes her heal upon loafing, while her shiny teeth version's skill prevents her from loafing period.

Finding their locations is a bitch though.

Whelp, I bought Fleshy Souls and Bony Spirits will be here on Monday, which I have off from work. I'm excited, but also nervous to play it.
