Here's my theory- humor changes with the times and generations. Development of humor starts at an earlier age, and whatever you grow up with and consider what is funny and isn't grows with you. Now that's not to say your sense of humor cannot change or mature, but one's natural mindset for humor is, like a first impression, the strongest. That said, while younger audiences may not be into the sense of humor that we are, with enough exposure they can grow to appreciate and like it.
Take the Japanese style of humor for example. When I first started watching anime as a boy, I didn't get much of it or why it was funny; I thought it was more weird than anything. Of course after years of exposure I can get a giggle out of both the style of delivery or context of jokes from anime. I would bet money if someone who was quite ignorant of anime were to pick it up, they would also.
This is pure speculation on my part, but I also believe humor at its deepest root is our brains recognizing certain connections, observations, or references and being pleased by them.
TLDR- Humor I believe is like any other behavior and is learned.

There are way more variations and forms of this but it's basicaly what all comedies boil down to and to actually work at comedy this is how you usually go about it unless you're a natural and can make anything sound/read/look funny, and even if you grasp that you still won't be sure of it because then you're gonna have to rely on the audience understanding the joke and laugh at it because humor is also greatly referencial regardless of what shape it is, even things like the funny scream or Chris doing a silly voice, because it's all referencial, random, factual and spontaneous in some way.

I think the problem with the Simpsons is that maybe back then people weren't expecting how the jokes play out so the references were fresh, but because nowadays everyone did every joke to death it became common knowledge to the point where watching Simpsons is basicaly going ''I get it, but I'm not laughing'' for 20 minutes.
