Yeah. It sucks. Burmecians/Cleyrans/Nezumi have just enough lore to found the basic themes of their civilization, but there are still so many gaps for history and other aspects, especially since we don't even really SEE Burmecia itself.

I voted for Burmecians back when SE was adding the 6th playable race. They're just so cool, but a nice thing about the Burmecians is that they're human enough, without boasting anything too much like human proportions. It would have been refreshing in the lineup.

Not getting them might be a blessing in disguise however, bc it would suck when SE inevitably give Burmecians humanized everything to make them fit into the gear molds. Rat waifus will never be as cute without their adorable feet and paws, thicc fat haunches and looooong soft looking snouts.

Freya is a character I love but I can never seem to justify doing a finished painting of her, she's not really popular enough to pull any traffic and I doubt anyone is ever going to commission it.

I agree. I've only played the Steam FF9 re-release, but from what I've seen from character portraits it seems that Freya's face was supposed to be obscured by her hat.
It's hard to tell though. Some official artwork shows her eyes as blue while others show them as a pale green.

Yes!
There are quite a few mods. Most of them are pretty easy to install. There are even ones that re-add cut dialogue. A lot of it being Freya and Burmecia related.

I DEFINITELY recommend the fixed sound mod. A lot of the mods are mentioned on the steam community boards.

This is just hearsay, but I heard Freya was intended to have a much larger role in FF9.

Sure feels that way, but most of the secondary characters are the same. Freya, Amarant, Eiko and Quina all have small arcs and besides Freya all feel forced in.

It's never directly addressed if there were plans specific to Freya and the burmecians but the developers made it clear than much like every other FF game in the PSX era they had to cut content to make the release dates.

This is mostly why these four >>10764304 always felt disjointed from the game near the end.

People can only guess to what they wanted to do. Figure out what happened to Fratley, have the Burmecians come together again and rebluid Burmecia and Cleyra.

Instead the game ends with the Burmecians scattered without a homestate and Fratley missing until the very end with no closure if he will ever get his memory back.

I sort of feel that way about ix, honestly. I like a good meaty jrpg like dragon Quest vii or front mission 3. The only final fantasy to ever really deliver that was ff7. 9 was very threadbare, but people love it because of it's story.

Well, Burmecia's fight is more or less plot. Even though you're far too late to save anyone, the whole scene is meant to convey just how ridiculous Alexandria's military power is. If you could cream their top general who has never lost a battle, it would take away from that.
Same thing with the battle at Cleyra, plus that you're actively defending the place the plot wants to destroy because fuck mice I guess, so of course you're not allowed to win.

The last battle at Alexandria doesn't have those excuses, though, since it's basically a pointless filler battle, and she switches sides soon after. There's really no reason for you not to be able to beat her by that point other than the writers wanking over how strong their favorite general is. Then she gets forgiven and gets a boyfriend and lives happily ever after and Freya gets to eat shit because fuck mice.

Come on, Japan! Losing to some hyped up enemy and then kicking their ass in the rematch, having someone you just beat up see the error of their ways and join you, these are classic storytelling moves! The fact that they dropped the ball so thoroughly on this pisses me off.

I've only played a few of the main FF games (4,6 9, 10) and haven't even played FFIX until beating it recently over steam, but I'd defend FF9. Even with the blatant story gaps, it executed its themes very well, especially considering its contemplations on death, memory, un-reciprocated/ non-romantic love, and the nature of heroics (partly on the idea that heroes may not act in terms of a pre-determined fate, but moreso just making snap decisions in tense scenerios).

I used to play a lot of JRPGs when I was younger, but honestly, a lot of them lacked world building and atmosphere and played more like tele-novellas with grinding.

I'm not trying to pick any fights here, and to an extent I agree with the choppiness of FFIX's plot (especially after the halfway point of the game), but I'd still say it has a pretty good sense of atmosphere and pacing. That, and it has a very strange glow about it that just feels different. I guess a way to explain it is: there's more of a denouement than a clear ending, and I actually enjoy the fact that Fratley and Freya's relationship was left up in the air while they sat side by side in the ruins of their nation. By the end of the game, Freya still buckled down, sucked in her gut, and fought to save the world (even though we first met her as a self-statedly 'selfish' drunk who was dependent on her bf). Coupling that with the impersonal feeling you get from Vivi's final words, there was something mystical about it. It was sentimental, but fleeting.

Yeah, but you say what every die hard ff9 fan says. How amazing and mystical and touching and deep the story is. Like I said, most people love 9, because of its story and nothing else.

While even on that, I kinda disagree. Most of my point is on the whole, ff9 is a mediocre video game. The gameplay is a snooze. The planet has hardly anywhere to go after the first continent and the side quests are awful.

And as a freya fan, fuck final fantasy ix's story. Zidane, garnet, and vivi got all that focus and deep shit, while freya got shafted so hard, it was almost comical.

I disagree, but I grew up with games like FF4 and Dragon Warrior III, so it might just be that I'm acclimated to picking commands from menus. The sidequests were... there. It'd be a lie to say I enjoyed them, but they weren't something I hated, either.
I also enjoyed Tetra Master, but I never played FF8, which people tell me had the better card game. At least I think they should have kept FF8s "trade cards for items" system, that would have given more incentive to play.

If I were to change one thing about the gameplay it would be how you can't save Trance for later. Even though it's actually relevant to the plot unlike every other game, it ends up being mostly pointless because you can't actually control when it goes off -- meaning it'll mostly go off while fighting random mobs, unless you're specifically grinding for it before a boss.

I also really loved how alive the world felt, with all the fidget motions of the characters and the optional side scenes. Even the numerous, numerous things that could be missed along the way, so much as I hate them, made the world seem dynamic, like it was moving without you.

I really enjoyed my trip through FF9's world, and thought the game was entirely serviceable, especially for the PS1 era.

If so, you really ought to give vii a shot. It gets a lot of shit for having technology and being the big popular one, but it's planet is a joy to explore. There are so many places to go and things to do. One of the optional characters has a home town that you dont even have to visit once. But if you recruit her and go there, it becomes this decent sized episode trying to first get what she stole from you, then save her from a pervert.

This is the kind of stuff that vii has that viii, ix, and x lack.

The Only FF game I played that I hated was 10, but that's because the plot and characters failed so hard on basic, functional levels that no real sense of theme could bloom from it.

FF7 was the first 3D Final Fantasy, and was a major cause for the popularization of jRPGs in the west. It had a huge impact on the genre and for a long time it had a huge fanbase.
But, partly due to inevitable backlash of that popularity and partly due to the fact that it just did not age well (popeye arms notwithstanding, it's also just a straight up product of the 90s, which hasn't really aged well as a decade), it's become much less beloved. Personally, I also think that some of that backlash came about because of Squarenix trying to shill sequels for it, which really shone a light on its flaws. If they hadn't done that, it would have been able to fit snugly inside of old nostalgia, much like Ocarina of Time managed to do for the longest fucking time until Nintendo started re-releasing that for other systems as well.
Those aren't bad games, they've just aged poorly. I think it's perfectly fine to enjoy them as long as you're aware that they have flaws.

Anyway, to bring this conversation back around towards the thread topic, that's another thing I like about FF9. The presence of weird looking characters like Queen Brahne, or the plethora of furries, really helps to downplay the limitations of polygons at the time, because at that point you're already conditioned not to expect perfect realism. And the classic setting has also allowed it to age really well as time goes by.
It has flaws, too, but I think it's done a lot better.

The biggest shame is that x and xii had some really great characters that get drowned by the shitty ones. I'd play an Auron game or a Fran and Balthier game.

I really liked the design as well. The semi-deformed style really tickles my fancy. I've met a few people who've avoided the game due to the art, though. Fair enough, Amarant looks like roided ICP fan. However, that style was really pushed well and it did wonder for the various clothing designs and shizz.

it didn't have the same impact as the others because it came at the tail end of the PS1's lifecycle and it wasn't graphically impressive or marketed to hell and back like FF7 + 8. Also the art style turned a lot of people off. People who grew up with FF IX tend to have loved the game, it's not a hipster thing. You just come across as really mad that Freya's story was shafted. The world is just as detailed as FF7's too, and I'm speaking as someone who loves both games with a preference leaning towards FF7.

Yeah. I'm cool with that, but just the fact that he is a weird techno-fantasy character displaced even further in a techno-fantasy future is an insanely dissociating opening for a young me to go through.
That, and Teedus's blatant disregard for like anyone else in general. I honestly quit playing the game after Tidus tried consoling Waka about his exploding mecca by saying "Woah. Pretty fireworks."
I get that a lot of Teeduece's shit was intentional, in some ways it's tenacious and pretty funny, but it didn't work out well.

On the other hand, FF9 successfully introduces Zidane and the gang, Dagger, Steiner, and Vivi especially in a short sequence while simultaneously fleshing out Alexandria and stuff. It's hard for me not to appreciate that pacing.

I'm literally saying that outright. I said earlier that I think the game as a whole is alright. Not good, not bad. If they would thrown freya or the burmecians a bone, I wouldn't have had as much of a problem. Or if I didn't like rats, I likely wouldn't care about ff9 at all.

And FF9's world is just as detailed as vii's, maybe a little more so. But it's half the size of vii. viii and x were no better. After vii, the series started to focus on style instead of substance.

The only reason they escaped Cleyra was because they rode teleport bubbles onto an enemy ship. It's kind of hard to give consolations when so many snap decisions have to be made. That being said, I would've liked at least a pat on her back for staying strong throughout everything.

Beatrix wasn't easily forgiven, Freya even telling her it's too late for forgiveness and all Beatrix can do now is prevent further tragedy from happening by her nation's hands, Brahne was acknowledged to have basically been manipulated by Kuja to the point of essentially brainwashing and was a kind and beloved queen prior to the game's events, Zorn and Thorn got outright killed, as were the Black Waltzes, Lani ended up going off alone and didn't receive forgiveness from anyone but a bunch of moogles, Garland wasn't forgiven, Kuja was forgiven only during his death at the very end and only by Zidane... So yeah, you can stop acting like all the antagonists got off super easy. And on top of all this, the only one they "got all sad for" was Brahne. Plus I'm pretty sure you've somehow mistaken Steiner for Vivi.

They also did briefly follow up on some of the survivors of the attempted genocide of Burmecia, and I'm sure if they had more time, they would've gladly added more. So in the end, you hate this game because Freya's arc wasn't the primary focus and the MAIN CHARACTER got most of the attention.
