To be honest, I think you may be overestimating this comic's popularity. At heart, this is a transformation comic, a subgenre that tends to be very niche. How many of us, after all, found OOPS while bouncing through tg/tf stuff on DeviantArt or FurAffinity? Also, while I don't know the man, I feel like Val interacts more with artists/writers within tg/tf circles rather than the "greater webcomic community," whatever that is.

Mind you, OOPS is probably better placed than most tf comics to gain more mainstream appeal. The whole comic is set up as a long-term exploration of the effects of just one transformation, and Val has avoided taking the comic into explictly fetishy/porny territory. I'd say he's definitely grabbing readers who normally wouldn't go in for a tf comic (myself included), but I don't think OOPS is on the verge of becoming a huge internet phenomenon, or that indie publishers will be beating a path to Val's door.

Even better if they go into how the character feels about their situation.

I really like stories featuring humans interacting and living with non-humans and the ways society would be different because of those interactions. I also really like the themes of transformation and exploring the challenges and changes it causes.

Honestly, I'm worried about that too, but for the moment I'm willing to give Val the benefit of the doubt. He seems pretty self-aware there are limits to what he can draw in his comics; in that podcast he did he said that once you start putting actual porn in your webcomic, you pretty much cross a line of no return. He's kept OoPs mostly free of raunchy stuff, and even LAM'd is more of a lighthearted sex comedy than a porn comic. Truth be told, if he did put actual porn in OoPs I'd drop the comic in a heartbeat, but as it stands I trust him to handle the subject matter maturely when and if it comes up.

Yeah, not only do I not need to get porny in order to draw this scene, but I don't want to go there in general. Make one page of sex in an otherwise PG-13 comic, and it changes a huge amount of readers' perspective of the comic, and becomes "a porn comic" to a lot of people. And that itself changes the expectations people have for it.

If my stuff was ever going the porny route, I would've made that clear within the first few pages of OOPs or LAM.
