It just seems like it's more lucrative because you see that pricetag on animation pieces and are subconsciously comparing it to single illustrations. Let's say a 10 second animation at 12 fps with full color is commissioned between 500-1000 dollars. 120 or so frames/images and the work takes a month.

That same artist could have just done 10 or 20 illustration commissions for the same amount of money. Maybe even less if you're a big name because then you can charge over a hundred per image.

The current trend animation is taking is to put it all under YCH. It cuts out most of the negotiation for what content you can expect.
