The badages hide the binding runes.
A random necromancer bound the soul in the sword after Mustache knight helped him.

As for Mustache Knight,
He's a Blacksmith from a village near a smouldering Volcano called Crucible.
He started journeying when the City's Dutchess was kidnapped and The Duke enlisted MK and 5 other people to find her.
Later down the road he helped a Necromancer and in return gave him a lead to the Dutchess wear abouts and put a soul in his sword. The two ( MK and Miss Sword) now do (highly questionable) deeda to find the Dutchess, Believing some jackass with a Purple hat and a ? for a face stole her.

No problem. Also as for piercing, it depends if it's a laser beam, a light beam, or an energy beam. A laser beam would make a physical hole. A light beam would penetrate anything even a little transparent, but leave no damage. An energy beam would penetrate most material except, like, lead.
