How many times do I honestly need to explain it to you? We've had remake after remake and reboots and redos. They suck dick and fail. They took the most popular game and did a 3DS port that failed. They tried to reboot it, albiet yeah it was shit controls and graphical errors and it was basically a lie from what Miyamoto was hinting at. But, it was another reboot, and it failed. People are tired of this. I'm tired of this, YOU should be tired of this. So many people are quick to blame the 64 side of remakes, yet they think their Adventures line of remakes will save the day. I don't care about their relationship, a fleshed out relationship isn't a fleshed out character, and a good character doesn't require a relationship to be interesting. I'm arguing it would have been better to let Dinosaur Planet be its own thing, and then put effort into a new Starfox game. We could have completely avoided Zero if we didn't have the Krystal era declines, if they had gone strong from 64 into something that was actually Starfox, and not a game reskin, we possibly could have had a fandom that wasn't on death's doorstep, appreciating games that were worth putting time and money into.

Despite that though, let's look at Starfox fan sites in particular. Command released in 2006. Zero released in 2016. That's ten years without a new game in the series. Fansites rely on there being, you know, stuff to talk about, news to keep people interested. A ten year drought will fucking murder that.

But let's summarize, as this is going long. Of your two arguments, that Krystal is not a Starfox character and that she symbolizes the decline of the series as a whole, neither have any evidence for them and in your own arguments you are lamenting not only that she IS a star fox character, but that a theoretical opportunity for Rare to write her apart from the Starfox franchise did not come to fruition, while also unable to tie her to the decline of the franchise at all.

So, imagine you're Fox for a moment. Wolf is someone, that has consistently gunned for you. We can tell from the dialogue it's not the first time they met, in fact given the tone of Fox's voice it's likely they've met in battle at least a couple times before. We know that it's a war, we know immediately that it isn't a safe colorful world, and people have died, specifically Fox's father. Now all we know canon is Pigma was involved, but even if Wolf wasn't directly involved, he is still someone who is harboring the guy instrumental in getting James killed, AND, he is consistently trying to KILL Fox and friends.

Now imagine you're Wolf, and this is the big one that irked me. Same story as before, you're at each other's throats to the point you're telling the guy he's going to be joining his dead father soon. But then the war ends and there's this huge break in contact. Fast forward and bam, Sargasso. Your first major contact with Fox again, is him completely wrecking your operation in order to beat information out of you, which he does. Sorta. The point is, the very NEXT interaction after this, after the war, after the threats of killing each other, after destroying his operation, Wolf SAVES Fox, and they start bonding with bullshit "Just act" advice.

Like I said, it makes Fox and Wolf look completely insane, or really fucking stupid.

I see. Let me offer a rebuttal then.

Falco's line when they lose implies the fight in Fortuna should have been their first meeting, but as you said Fox has a tone of familiarity when they first meet. Wolf has that too when when you let the base explode, saying that they won "this time." The implication here is that the two have a history of competing with each other, not necessarily as leaders of merc teams.
The Keibunsha strategy guide states that essentially Pigma and Andross made Star Wolf, not Wolf himself. Pigma designed the Wolfens, convinced Wolf to form the team, and along with Andross secretly manipulated him to do their bidding the entire time. Leon was hired after, and Andrew was installed by Andross to keep an eye on them. So, it's not a matter of Wolf harboring James' killers, but the killers harboring Wolf and using him as a puppet. The official guide also mentions this.

Now in Assault we find out he doesn't tolerate traitors, and with Andross and Andrew gone Pigma was kicked out. Perhaps Wolf expelled him not because he's worried about being betrayed but instead discovered some details Pigma conveniently left out when forming Star Wolf.
The incident at Sargasso was pretty much all the goons' fault; Fox never wanted to fight from the start but was forced to retaliate. He even compliments Star Wolf at the end.

Point is, most times they're shown interacting they're forced into a conflict, and that moment in Corneria is the first interaction where that isn't the case, and Wolf chose to not hold a grudge.

To conclude, there's some allusions that their relationship isn't entirely a hostile one. The official strategy guide says that "if not for Pigma's influence, you may never have become enemies. Who knows? In another time, another place, you might have called him friend…" Not Star Fox, but it's amusing that in F-Zero GP Legend James McCloud specifically names "O'Donnell" as his partner who died for him. Then we have the Lylat Wars comic.

Honestly all things point down to a "you are my rival" relationship.

Not hostile (aside from wolf being paid to kill fox before), but more a matter of honor between warriors/rivals than a grudge or hate.

To be honest the whole "crux of the wolf/fox ship" thing feels like fans taking shit out of context (or seeing things with rose tinted glasses, except for shipping), just like some peope do with Ike from fire emblem.

Sounds noncanon to me. In reality we can tell what they were going for, the gruff antihero that so many other games at the time were trying to create. This has nothing to do with an extremely few shreds of information of arguable consistency.

It's like RLMs take on the prequels, they always allude to off screen stuff showing Anakin and Obiwan as being the bestest of friends, but all we actually see onscreen is Anakin bitching about everything. If they intended to show some kind of understanding, they should have showed it, and not dropped little cute hints around material no one cares about, while all their interactions in game are conflict, and then a sudden complete 180 where everyone loves each other now.

It's just poor character design.
