honestly, I only just finished my playthrough and I'm not sure I like it all that much, at least as a game.

I played Oxenfree only a day or so before NITW and had far more fun with Oxenfree, which felt a lot more like a tightly paced and exciting game, in spite of having even fewer proper mechanics at play. By comparison, I loved everything about NITW except the fact that it was a videogame. I really connected with the characters and everything, but playing through it over eight or nine hours simply laid the lack of complexity bare and made the whole game seem like a great tv cartoon, only one where you have to move the characters from scene to scene and occasionally press some buttons to make story happen.

I'm here because I wanna talk about it and the fanart is pretty great, but I'm not all that sure about the game itself.

Because it runs through the entire game, if you miss the one event to trigger it near the beginning of the game by no talking to her enough, it never happens at all. You can search $eels in the game script page to see all the times the game checks if eels is enabled.

Night in the Wood's dialogue system is actually a lot deeper than you would originally think just from playing the game once, but I am not sure the depth matters considering all roads lead to the same destination.

See, now you put it like that, I reckon it might be just because Mae was an easy target, like trying to run a "your internets are slow" scam on a grandma. Consider that the cultists were all kind of miserable about losing a lot of their town and that Mae was already off the rails because S H A P E S, so maybe her defences were way down, in a way.

I'm not saying it happens to everybody who gets sad, but it seems like it latches onto the weaker ones. Bea fell into a rut but she's mostly just angry about it, hence she perhaps didn't succumb to its influence, or maybe just told the goat to fuck off in a dream, but didn't realise the significance.

You can still have that and branching paths. Needs coherent and consistent writing though.
Best way to do it is to have dialogue change based on player interactions. That way it's still Mae doing her own thing, but with environmental influence changing how she handles the specifics.

Kinda like how talking to the doe later has Mae ranting about how she hates cute guys. Only not shallow and superficial like that was.

I played this during a sad part of my life recently. It had picked me up for what the overall theme of it was. It reminded me that things will never bee the same, things change. And after i quit my job working for this shitty amazon delivery location. I honestly I'd never find another job. I had gotten 4 interviews that i thought i did really well at, and got no second contact after my interviews.

Not only that but It reminded me of when I was meme trash, and in high school. I was rebellious and a little crazy. I actually helped explode someones truck and accidentally had it be one of the teachers at my highschool lmao.(she was a bitch so i felt a little less bad about it) I also stole fire extinguishers and used them in darkened suburban streets at night.

Back then college either seemed too expensive for me or too much of a hassle for me to handle, which is why I really related to Mae. But not only that, but at around the same time i was 20 My grandfather died too.

This story really struck well with me. and of course the characters too. My friend is almost reminicent of Bea, hes in an apartment living with his mother and non biological father, who has been having money problems as long as i have known them. And i love my friend. hes smart and very capable. but gets shit chances for opprotunities.

With a story like NITW's, i loved the idea of killing some fate stealing god so I can have hope and a chance for not only me, but my friends too to be happy.
