So I found a lone Desktop Army girl in the local anime convention and picked it up, I'd heard of this stuff before but I've never seen it and most of my miniature experience is in /tg/ stuff rather than /toy/. So where do I go from here? Do people usually paint the armored parts of the kits, or do they just apply the stickers on places? Are the kits totally incompatible with other stuff, or do they just look weird with the size and scope of the head and stuff?

Easiest way would be to cut off the existing hole, reposition it and cover the gap with pla plates and/ or millputty.

You can temporarily stick some rod with an appropriate diameter through it and sculpt around that if you rub the rod down with mould release wax or something similar, so that way you won't even have to drill the hole.

Say it with me: BIG
>>
>>6515414
1. Try using hotter water and more dish soap in the mixture.

2. Toothbrush is too stiff and puts more force on the gates.

3. I personally use a big hog bristle brush, literally the ones you use for oil painting or craft store paints. Stiff enough, but the bristle length and overall flexibility lets me reach all the crevices of the parts, and lets me scrub thoroughly without stressing the gates on the runners. Personally, I use a size #12 brush so I can clean more runners faster, and I haven't had those stress marks on my runners ever since I switched to the hog bristles. The slipperiness from the mold release is removed just as good if I used a toothbrush.

Historically also, toothbrushes used to be made out of hog or horse hairs anyway.
>>
>>6515428

I just want to let you know I really appreciate all the in progress pics of this, it's very neat and you're doing a great job so far.
>>
>>6515435
Using the bristle brush also lets me clean off small and loose pieces ( like you know, some that are already assembled) and just scrub them while in the palm of my hand much more easily than the toothbrush. Good for paint prep when you don't have a sonic cleaner.

Forgot to mention my hog brush is a #12 flat head.

My method in general basically is to sweep across the pieces in a grid formation, row by row, tilt 90 degrees, then flip to the backside and repeat.

I tried make a set of one-piece cyberpunk shades for my FAG, but I tried to use a test scrap of pla plate before trying it for real on translucent plastic.

I held down the part I wanted to bend under boiling water for about ten minutes, then bent it while it was hot. Stress marks appeared.

I also tried the other side where I bent it, held it in shape with clamps and other stuff... then boiled it for the same time. The stress marks won't go away.

Any tips to do this properly?

(If anyone asks why there's a similar question in /smg/, the other styrene attempt was for trying to make bendy pipes and wiring. )

the alumilite white casting material actually works pretty well. The material is rigid yet soft enough to have a good hold with the face slots. also incredibly cheap for the starting caster, so you can toss out any mistakes while figuring out your dye ratios.

also easily accessible is the smooth on smooth cast 300 series. they take dyes well and you can buy the specs you want. I'm currently using 305, which I chose for the slower setting time, 30 minutes. A slower setting time gives you more time for bubbles to shift out and lets you pour more casts per mix since they don't harden up on you as quickly.

casting a front face is quite easy. the faces are relatively flat. The hardest part is getting the pegs and slots right on the back aspect, and a slow setting resin really improves your quality of life when trying to get those right.

>I tried making a mold out of smooth-on's silicone mold maker but parting lines don't line up very well because they keep sticking on to each other when I put them together.

It sounds like you need to key your molds. The keys will ensure the mold halves align and interlock properly and can't shift around.

Use Smooth-On mold release, or if you want to go cheap, heat some Vaseline (or generic petroleum jelly) with a hair dryer set on low, then brush it onto the mold faces (not in the parts cavities) to prevent the mold halves from sticking to each other.
>>
>>6518668

>A slower setting time gives you more time for bubbles to shift out and lets you pour more casts per mix since they don't harden up on you as quickly.
>he doesn't know lol
Urethane resins such as SmoothCast pull moisture from the air and create air bubbles as a product of chemical reaction, the longer they remain liquid the more time they have to create new bubbles. It's counter-intuitive but 300 would actually give you fewer bubbles than 305 if you can mix it carefully.

305's pot life is 7 min, not 30 BTW
After 7 min the whole thing goes rigid in seconds and the exothermic curing starts, no air bubbles are shifting anywhere at that point.

300 would set too quickly though. in that case, they might as well stick with the alumilite. the majority of faceplate bubbles that lead to ruined plates come from molds not fully filling. the 7 minutes works perfectly in that case. actually, I've never had moisture induced air bubbles leading to tossed plates in practice, so I'm mindful of it, but I don't fixate on it. unless you're in a swamp environment or handle your resins oddly, that 30 minutes will still easily result in a smooth cast. I suppose if there were any bubbles they'd be deep inside the cast because I have yet to see moisture induced bubbles on a surface significant enough to detract with faceplates. I suppose I could throw one under a microscope, but that'd just be weird...

I guess we can read up on all the tutorials we like but we need to practice and apply it to reality. otherwise, mall ninjas and couch warriors would rule the world (I recently got into firearms for elbow rubbing purposes).

>>6518475
hmm, not sure how the parts are "sticking together," but I'll try to help. like >>6518677 said, in setting up a mold, good keys can ensure good alignment. With this, any amount of sticking will still result in well aligned parts. Vaseline is also cheap and effective to keep molds from sticking to each other, but I would not use vaseline when pouring resin. baby powder can be used if pouring resin. I would not use oil or soap ever.

vaseline makes a lipbalm version that comes in a cute mini vaseline container that also double duties as a shinki prop.

let me know if that answers your question, if not I can try to see what the problem is.

and I currently use oomoo 30 (for lack of cheaper alternative), some cardboard, and masking tape. I used to use legos but I've come to realize cardboard works better.

I know. The solvent in lacquer paint has acetone in it, which is basically required to molecularly loosen the PVC so as to accept paints.

Standard procedure for PVC in general is to treat it with acetone, but no clue how concentrated it is in lacquer thinner.

The other concern is the paint cracking and flaking off when the PVC flexes (when you make the hands hold items and stuff), so I thought adhesion promoter might help in that regard.

Back in the day I saw modellers on fg-site use a certain brand of acryl gouache paints for better adhesion to PVC (on figma pieces to customize)

How could we go about it?

So did the other 6pack versions of Desktop Army come with 6 unique versions? I know the earlier ones all had different runners but the base figure was the same (aside from the faceplates). What I'm getting at is, how likely am I to get one of each girl from this latest pack if i go for the 6pack on a place like Amiami?

Meh, I like the design, but she has old joints so I'm not so sure if it's worth it

Or a layer of superglue.
>>
>>6520051
Don't use superglue. It discolors plastic and won't last very long anyway. If you don't have access to Future/Pledge floor polish, use nail polish like that other anon said.

Thanks mate, I finally got the ninja
>>
>>6519456

Yeah the real concern is when you force it to move.

I painted some pipes for a gunpla kit in a combination of lacquer and acrylic and realized when I reached assembly that they wanted you to bend some of them quite a bit. Luckily, no issues that time, but it was p scary.

male sorry
>>
>>6513364
Is it a model kit? If so, does that mean you have to assemble and glue it..? Paint/line it?
>>
>>6520165

I'm roughly 99,99% certain they are snap fit kits.

The bodies are supposedly vinyl or some other not so easy to paint material.

So I have decided to not use the skin toned parts on the arms and legs of my MD. I can't decide on what I should use for the belly, skin tone or a darker, high gloss version of the basecoat. What would be lewder?

>>6520450

Doesn't seem like a complete nightmare to paint but still kinda sucks.

Kyoudo wo motasetai baai wa Y1 wo tsukatte kumitatemasu.

Roadrunner, similar sentence appears in a few places. The pieces on the Y runner are hip and wrist joints. I guess it could be related to the Y runner being a different material (POM)?

Yes. It probably tells you that you can use them if the ABS ones break.

Somebody made a Strarf once but ended up FATT instead of THICC. I think its easier to do it with FAG bodies judging by the ammount of custom works.
