Shitty Beast Man rip-off/replacement.

I debated with a friend once; about how god-awful the Horde characters were. They looked like a bunch of generic monsters all tossed in together until a single banner. Most of them would be forgettable D-List villains if not for them being sold under the Horde banner.

Anyone know why Hasbro even created the Horde? Did they create them because they heard Hasbro was creating Serpentor and upgrading Megatron to Galvatron and wanted to do the same with He-Man, in terms of replacing Skeletor?

IIRC they were created because the cartoon writers wanted to shake things up (IIRC they were forced to neuter Skeletor and wanted to bring in a new bad guy faction since Skeletor was no longer a viable threat).

So they came up with the Horde, but the cartoon got canceled to make way for She-Ra so it was decided to kill two birds with one stone and make them the bad guy for She-Ra to cross promote the two lines.

What would be a good alternate origin/backstory for the Horde?

Ideally, you could keep the notion that Hordak was Skeletor's mentor/Palpatine who turned him from dark elf to skull face.

Maybe make Leech, Manatee, and Grizzlor escaped convicts who crash on Eternia and who end up accidentally freeing Hordak from a tomb where Skeletor imprisoned him?

In the mini-comics, Grizzlor and Leech are urban legend type monster men (forget what Manteena's deal was but IIRC he was already working with Hordak) that were recruited by Hordak for the Horde.

His backstory varies:

Mini-Comic backstory is that he's Eternia's version of Big Foot

Cartoon and Marvel Comic backstory is that he is one of Hordak's main generals

MOTUC backstory is that he's from an alien world Hordak visited; he kidnapped Grizzlor, mindwiped him, then gave him a crossbow and made him part of the Horde.

Leech,Mantenna, and grizzlor are from a pre-eternian species that was wiped out by the eternians. Each species had their own attributes. Grizzlor had Strenght and durability. Mantenna had intelligence and speed. Leech had a specialty for infiltration and could also spit poisonous glen out of his mouth. Hordak united them all to take revenge on the eternians that slaughtered their race.
