So, what's the odd Action Masters are the next cheap carded gimmicky figures after Titan Masters and Pretenders / Powermasters? I know they were universally laughed at for basically being transformers that don't transform but, assuming they have good sculpting and paintjobs and are designed with proper modern action figure articulation, I sure as hell wouldn't mind a few HA-sized ones. The transformable weapons in particular were a really neat accessory and I'd love to see some of them being remade.

From a shopping POV it was pretty good last year. The dealers had a nice mix of current, classic, and third-party. Pic related, my haul from last year. I had a lot of fun buying cheap/shit Beast Wars stuff.

The actual con events are a mixed bag. They focus mainly on the old G1 cartoon and comics, and the current IDW comics. So your mileage may vary on that.

So /tfg/, I want to do a complete 2007 Bayshit Autobot cast all relatively in scale with each other.
I have MPM 03 & 04 as well as HA Jazz. Should I get some existing Ratchet and Ironhide figures or wait and hope the MPM line doesn't get cancelled after the disaster that 03 and 04 were?
I'm kind of meh on the '07 Voyager Ratchet mold, it would stand out among the rest as not being over-greebled enough.
As for Ironhide, I really don't like any of the larger figures all that much. The Leader class seems like the best option but he's on the large end of scale I'm aiming for and holy shit that backpack. I want to like the DoTM Voyager but his upper body is all weird in the pictures I've seen, plus only one cannon that's bad.

My personal favorite representations of those characters are the HFtD Deluxes but they're way off scale for what I want to do.

If I'm looking at reviews for something I might buy, the only things I want to see are what its articulation is like and what its problems are. /toy/ discussions are pretty good for at least the latter. Pretty much any other information relevant to my decision purchasing can be gotten from pictures.

There's a collectibles shops about an hour away that sells used Transformers at a flat rate. Only on-card or in-box are individually priced. So I picked up a Primus and an Energon Insecticon for the same price. Primus is missing his missles, key and a finger, but that's it aside from the lock, I think. Found several other good deals there, as well.

Action Masters were pretty cool when they came out. My cousin and I had a bunch of them. I liked that they were attempting to make more cartoon accurate looking figures, but felt they should of painted them to look even closer.

They should bring back the concept and do highly articulated Masterpiece compatible figures that blend in nicely. This would be a nice way to do perfect robot modes. You could also do Megatron then and not worrt about his gun transformation.

Just bought this guy today since I never saw the mold in either the Megatron or Dreadwind variations in my area. Pretty fun mold even if he just turns into a box. Love the way the headsculpt looks, it's got a mix of both G1 and Movie aesthetics going for it.

So I got Titans Return Twintwist today and holy shit, this guy impressed me. For one thing, he's a lot less blatantly hollow compared to some of the better deluxe of TR but only that but...

Is it me or is this guy really chunky? He's noticeably taller, wider and heavier than other TR deluxe, like he's made of more plastic. Is it just me or is he genuinely bigger? Either way, this one is great and I badly need to hunt down or order a Topspin now.

I was told a pen, or a AA battery would work for the basic transformation, if using a pen apply pressure so it doesn't snap in half when doing the planet side shift/head and shoulder shifter and you only need to press the pen in to rotate the sides of the legs as WHILE HOLDING THE PEN IN AT THE VERY CENTER you can rotate them with a free hand.

A thick pen (or mentioned battery) like pic related works best, as long as the tiny button in the center of each keyhole is pressed as you do the slide functions it'll work, infact try to avoid using a ballpoint pen, the tip of mine broke and nearly shattered one doing a test run

If you like MPM Prime I'd say go for it. I paid $100 for mine after shipping and outside of some pretty serious QC issues I had to repair he's a great figure. I'm probably in the minority of liking Prime better though, he's not as fiddly to transform especially after modding.

Personally I'd try to find a loose one so you can be certain of no QC defects.

There wasn't anything widespread on the figure like Prime's cab, just overall garbage QC. Here are some of the more common ones:

Missing/broken/overtight due to paint collarbone pieces
Backwards flank flaps preventing torso and car mode from tabbing together correctly (If you see black plastic pieces sticking out from behind the sides of the bumper in robot mode it may be affected, they should tab in fully behind the bumper, though some people just don't tab them in because of how tough they are so it complicates things)
Broken battlemask
Poorly applied paint applications (missing paint, overspray, splotches, etc.)
Warped panels preventing vehicle mode from lining up (not as extreme or wideapread as Prime)

Mine personally was an extreme series of unfortunate events that I doubt a lot of figures suffer from. Best I can tell, someone forgot to screw the wheel assembly to the inside wheelarch on the doorwing. When it got further down the line to get pinned to the main body, it didn't fit into the jig correctly as a result and the pin got driven crooked, mauling the shit out of the lower half of the hinge and resulting in the doorwing hanging on by a proverbial thread. I had to completely disassemble his upper body and reshape the lower part of the hinge, and then re-drive the pin. It's solid now but still sits a bit crooked in car mode, I need to get my heat gun and do a little more work still. I also need to go to the hardware store and buy that missing screw.

All in all probably about 60% are fine, 30-35% have minor issues like paint or minor panel warpage, and 5-10% have serious issues regarding misassembly or damage. Not odds I'd take on an MISB figure again if I planned to open it, especially with no window box. Let someone else take that gamble.
