I never had an airbrush (until now, and even then I still can't find a compressor) so I practiced a lot with a brush until I got the right consistencies and method to make it as smooth as possible. I can only weather with oils and fine brushes.

The problem with brush painting is that it will take about 10 to 20 coats to do something smooth enough while AB will only take about 2 to 3.

Welp.
99% done, waiting for stuff to dry and touch ups. It started raining pretty hard today and I don't know if it's gonna continue for a few days so final pics soon™

Build log album: http://imgur.com/a/SnAeM
Not much to say about this one as it was pretty standard weathering. I guess I'm a bit burned of doing tanks so I'm gonna clean my palate and build one of those ma.k suits I bought to get some variety, perhaps the aml-90 too before getting back to build the king tiger.
>>6470887
I really like this sherman, its quite tastefully done what I've seen in the pics
>>6472214
I use the vallejo one, I guess its pretty much the same, and use it in very thin layers if the surface is not "enclosed" or slopped but I rarely do that and mostly to make sure masking tape is sealing well rather than as the main masking. Try silly putty also as it sticks better
>>
>>6473658
I think it still needs another filter or something. Contrat/colors is a bit high imo
>>
>>6473671
It looks brighter in the pic than irl, also instead of doing light oils I should used a more tan or ocher palette and more shadows would made it look darker overall. I'm not gonna touch it more as I'm quite fed up with it, even if it looks quite good in the base I just have this one crossed now

Had this old dragon Maus built up for a while, but never got a camo I liked on it.wanted to try something different with it so I tried to base a camo off of the takom Maus box art. Think the green is a little to light and bright for my likening .what do you guys think?
>not finished with octopus camo
>tracks not painted
>no weathering yet
Is the takom Maus worth getting looks like the same mold or a close copy of dragons old mold of Maus?
>>
>>6473710
Construction went pretty well but it just pissed me off towards the end, well, whatever as it's finished.
>>6473788
The Takom one is a new mold, running gear are workable tracks for example. Some anon was working on the takom v1 some threads ago.
Personally, if you already have this one build just finish it as the maus is a pretty simple tank without much detail going on, if you feel like doing the takom one for whatever reason feel free too
>>
>>6473803
I'm a sucker for anything limited production or unfinished/prototypea. ( currently also working on an object 279, Ferdinand, e-50, and a kv-2 )
I saw a build video of the takom maus and it just looked so similar to dragon in how it's built I thought they may have just bought the mold.
>>
>>6473818
>I'm a sucker for anything limited production or unfinished/prototypea
I guess we're gonna be friends then, I also have a thing for prototypes and "what if" stuff, I have a special edition of the king tiger almost finished (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/1027407-ammo-mig-jimenez-a-mig-8500-1945-king-tiger) but I'm leaving it until I unwind with some other kits.
About the similarities, well its quite boxy so I suppose they ended with similar solutions. i don't know if the dimensions, etc are better in the new one maybe

i remember seeing this kit. it's supposed to be a rework/simplification of the KT right?
I based my e-50s paint job off that style, but I made it look like they ran out of dunkelgelb halfway through painting it. (been working on it for two years might have to just get another one tracks are rubber band and a pain and tried so many camos. striped and sanded so many times I've lost some weld detail on the inner locking plates on front )
Build was great but man I hate myself for screwing up the paint and the kit to some degree that much.

Try taping a piece of toilet paper or a single layer of paper napkin to cover your light source. It should help diffuse the light and kill some of the hot spots. Thinner is good. It just needs to filter the light a bit.

>Trumpeter 1/35 Hotchkiss H.38 in Girls und Panzer universe, working on crew

I cleaned up the collar and put the bow tie in, building up a little more material around the top of the collar. After getting a decent thickness to the neck and trimming it back, I'm leaving it alone for when I glue the head in place. I'll build up and shape the neck in before putting in the hair (still open to suggestions. So far, I only have "poofy" as a request.
Don't mind the weird coloring to the head. I put down some paint to check for imperfections, then fixed it by building up material with brushed on acrylic. It probably would have gone faster if I had used a good heavy gloss for the first layer of corrections.

Not a lot of movement on the tank itself. I flipped the exhaust around and trimmed it after studying real examples of the tank. I need to scratch build a support bar for it, since the kit didn't come with one.

I bought 2 sets of resin aftermarket detail sets.
So far i rarely did anything with resin or metal and always used cheap superglue from the 99ct store but its nozzle isn't very thin so i probably end up gluing my detail parts anywhere but where it should go.

>March 45 specifications: new motorbay (only kit with this one ootb), tracks and some other simplifications
>July 45: 105mm gun, turret mods and most of the above stuff (I have the box under the table in a pile and can't be bothered)
I did a """"review"""" of it when it came out: http://imgur.com/a/skdsQ
And my progress so far: http://imgur.com/a/asqgu
About your e50 once you decide what you wanna do better buy a new kit as this one is pretty thrashed and the kit is pretty cheap anyway, the run out of paint is a nice idea but the execution I don't like it as it looks more like there was something there that fell off than anything. Perhaps doing it more in tho the middle?
>>6474396
Thanks, I doubt I will touch it up, it needs some mud on the inner part from the front as it's more visible than I thought but fuck it. Maybe before taking final pics and delivering it.
Did the yogurt academy girls even appear in any material? or you're doing Yukari? I can't say much about the mini as it falls pretty far from anything I have comment worthy experience but looking forward to see her done. Do you have the eyes decals too?

Pic related type of saw
>>
>>6475048
i have such a saw, but its way to big for all the tiny parts. a scalpel will do just fine i guess
>>
>>6475063
It depends on the pieces of course, a blade, old wire cutters and a saw are basic cutting stuff for resin, a dremel also but that's a higher investment.
The saw, there's smaller ones able to fit on the handle of the knife for example, puts less pressure while cutting and avoid most damage to fragile parts, that said it also depends on how hamfisted people are as I've seen massacres of easy to cut stuff by complete retards that didn't even know how to prepare a good surface and grip for the pieces.
And wear mask! (in case you don't know that dust is pure cancer)

That's a problem with a tank this large all camos look odd on it especially a camo scheme this strange. I don't know if they would do smaller lines with more lines or just say to hell with it and make large line do to how large Maus was. I know camo was field applied for most schemes.

No official characters have been shown yet, as far as I know. There's some fluff available in various books though, and they appear only in the battle results in the TV series.

>or you're doing Yukari? I can't say much about the mini as it falls pretty far from anything I have comment worthy experience but looking forward to see her done.
It's a custom job. Non official character. I will build a Yukari at some point though. Part of my building a custom character is to get a bit comfy with some elements.
I'm also posting some notes on my process in case anyone was interested and on the off chance someone could come away with something to put into their own knowledge base.

I do have eye decals. At first I wasn't going to use them but then decided it would be a tremendous pain in the ass not to. So, yeah, I'm going to go ahead and use them. Extra eye decals could be purchased too, which I ordered recently on eBay. Hopefully they fit..

I wasn't going to post about it yet but since I'm making a post anyway, I may as well.
I attached the head and finished up the neck by applying Tamiya white putty thinned with Model Master Thinner for Metalizer, applied with a brush. I used a fresh blade to carve and scrape out the details.

hello, fellow handbrushing brother
the build is nice, but next time you do a masking job try doing a single layer of the base color first (in this case, the bare aluminum) before painting the other colors
that way, you'll seal the masking tape and the lines will end up being sharper
you'll get a raised bump between the colors since there's more material under the painting, but it can be smoothed out with some crafty sandpapering or even varnished out of existence
>>
>>6478941

Are there any 1/12 scale military kits that I don't need to sell my left nut to afford? The lowest I've seen for any vehicle in that scale was ~60 dollars, but for tanks and planes they're much higher.
>>
Are there any paint brands that are pre-mixed for brush painting? I've built a few model kits but they're all unpainted because the one that I did try came out like an abortion.

Using Tamiya acrylics, it might also be a case of me just using really poor quality brushes as well, although it's more than likely me just being a complete idiot. I've got no idea whether I should be thinning acrylics with water or spirits, either, because forums tell you both things and people who talk like they know the answer argue with each other.

Also, I've been looking at some getting a mechanical model of some kind. I was looking at the Hayne's V8 engine but it has an electric motor and LEDs that make it look really cheap and tacky. Are there any recommended scale mechanical models?
>>
>>6479723
try watching paint thinning videos on youtube. It's one thing to read about what it should look like, it's another to watch someone thin it properly.
>>
>>6479723
Dont use tamiya acrylics for brush painting if you are a beginner. They would have a warning label if it didnt hurt sales. If you can only use the acrylics, get some retarder, and add 10% to combined paint and their proprietary thinner. Used that method last night to touch up an entire model.

If you must use tamiya to brush, but can avoid the acrylics, use their enamel range. The taller square bottles have the same internal volume so you aren't buying less and they can be thinned with white spirits, turpentine or their proprietary X20 thinner. They turn out much better when brushed, and I use them to paint small details all the time by brush. Hell I used tamiya enamel to brush paint some details on the same model I mentioned earlier.

Otherwise use literally any other brand of acrylics and you'll have much better results brushing. Just dont go for model air or something specifically thinned for airbrushes and you'll be fine.
>>
>>6479728
Cheers, I've only got half a dozen or so paints so it's not too much hassle to get another brand.

Seems it would be easier just to swap brand than to get all that other shite to try and get the tamiyas to work.

Are there any recommended brands? Like I said, I haven't painted at all so not sure what's a good brand and what's good value.
>>

>>
Probably a stupid question but anyway: can I do preshading (as in darker close to edges etc) and at the same time do edge highlighting through drybrushing a lighter shade than the basecoat at the same time or would it look weird?
>>
>>6479753
For brushing I prefer enamels, but they tend to smell and be harder to use since they require spirits to clean and thin. However they do have self levelling qualities and dry relatively fast. The cure time is longer than acrylics, but you will need to be patient either way. I cut my teeth using revell enamels, but vallejo acrylics work well.

You can use tamiya paints (I did for years an without thinner) IF you live somewhere with a high relative humidity like japan or as I found out scientifically this summer after the char 2c debacle, my town. To thin them you need as other anons pointed out their thinner X20A or you can use isopropyl alcohol too.
Vallejo is really good for brush application (both regular and air, which is only pre-thinned and with a bit of flow enhancer) and can be thinned with plain water, ammo mig and ak too but some of their paints are really hard to hand brush, xb-518 russian green from mig for example, at the same level of airbrush results.
>>6479834

"for what purpose" is what comes to my mind, but then I did something like that in pic related to blend the oil post shading later, no pre-shading done in my tho as I prefer post-shading and I don't like much how pre-shading looks (each to his own and when well done it looks quite dramatic and eye catching). But rather than dry brushing it I painted it as carefully as I could and also apply it to raised details so they pop-off more later with all the weathering.
(album so you can see what I meant with post shading with oils http://imgur.com/a/1UoMQ)

The thing is that it depends on the volumes of what are you're working on and what look you're going for so it doesn't look too cartoonish or weird, so try it as I can't image it in your project, and personal satisfaction is what really matters in the end
>>
>>6479783

>>
>>6480023
Dude if a 1/35 tank goes for more or less 60€ don't you think that your doll super size scale will scale quickly in price?
Even if not taking into account the niche (for scale models) scale, just by the materials and molds it would go at least for 400€ (going low on the price of the upcoming tamiya 1/16 static abrams) if not even more
>>
>>6480032
I understand the scaling of the prices and whatnot, but vehicles in the same scale have such varied prices ranging from $100 all the way to the 1000s. Usually vintage cars are on the cheaper side of that, but I wanted to know if there were any options for specifically military vehicles on the lower end of that spectrum.

so, I'm the guy with the F-14 build and I'm currently trying to figure out if there's a way to make the radome piece removable
as per pic related, the kit offers the possibility to have the radome either open or closed, but either choice is permanent (by cutting along the red line)

Magnets or run a wire trough the plastic

You "simply" chop off the red marked bit, and build a proper functional hinge there.

>Or do I buy Vallejo Model Colour range and try to thin it later if I want to airbrush something in future?
This.

Using both Vallejo MC and MA, and MA are not that fun to work with hand brushing. They'll do the job fine, but since they are slightly over-thinned for an airbrush they dont stick that well with a brush and you'll need multiple layers.
MC can easily be diluted to fit airbrushing (with water or their airbrush thinner) and are much comfier to use with a brush, given they are diluted right.
>>
>>6480506

No, and I don't see how there are so many misunderstandings.

I wanted to know if I could do pre shading (done by airbrush by using black paint onto the primer in certain areas before putting on the base coat) as well as the edge highlighting (done after the base coat by normal hand brush) on the same kit without it looking weird.

Why are Academy decals such DOGSHIT
>>
>>6481734
If I want to build something, I need to have an idea I want to see come to light or I want to replicate something I like.
You should always take inspiration before starting, in my opinion having something to help you visualize the finished model is the most important part of making a kit. It's having a target to aim at and knowing your limits as builder/painter and knowing what you have available to make it a reality.

As for historical accuracy, it helps to know what the model you're painting looked like, however you paid for the damn thing paint it a way that makes you happy, you took the time to make it.
What's the point of adhering to autistically strict historical accuracy if you don't like the way it looks.

Okay anons as you like discussing colors so much maybe you can be useful for once.
Pic related, dominant color is resedagrün and then the complementary one of those as I wanted to go on a more exotic colorway and already did a octopus camo with resedagrün and dunkelgelb and now I want something more eye catching.
Left to right:
>RAL8012 rotbraun, "interior red" comonly used as red primer (wrongly)
>Red primer light base, can be added red or orange to liven it up a bit
>RAL8017 schokobraun, the usual camo color

It hasn't dried in the pic but you get the idea, I'm quite divided right now in which to use. If I do it with rotbraun I can always put darker colors easily tho but I'm not sure desu

And basing the camo on green as per last orders so it would be either out of the factory with literally what they had around or more elaborated if I used schokobraun

So I go a friend into model building with a HG Gundam Ball twin set together we built together. She's interested in more, and asked me if I know of any good pirate ship kits. It's a little bit outside my wheelhouse because I'm more of a Gunpla guy, but what are you guy's suggestions for good beginner ship kits?
>>
>>6483787
I think Lindberg makes a pirate ship. Revell might also. Check their websites, both are probably a little pricey.
>>
>>6483787
Does it specifically have to be a pirate ship? The only one I know of if Revell's 1/72 - but it's enormous, expensive and complex.

Revell also make an HMS Bounty that has a similar aesthetic, is a little simpler and a lot more affordable. The real one had a mutinous crew if that counts for anything

Need some advice here. I'm building the Hasegawa 1/72 F-16D. The instructions call for a 3-tone scheme of FS36118 (Gunship Gray) and FS 36270 (Medium Gray) over FS 36375 Light Ghost Gray. However, all later-model F-16s that I've seen use only 36118 over 36375. Is this three tone scheme actually real, or is hasegawa just imagining a color difference between the upper and lower sides of the plane?

I'm going for an ambiguous schokobraun/red primer color, it ended like color modulation but that's not my objective so I'm gonna keep going softly so the gradient is less noticeable. I guess this way the mix will be less hard to the eye.

What paint have people used for painting Zero planes? I saw an airfix model in a sale bin and bought it, but the paints it comes with look horrible.
>>
>>6484539
Tamiya makes all the paints available for the A6M in both acrylic and enamel, depending on your version.

You will need:
XF-11, XF-12 and/or XF-76 depending on the version
XF-71 for the cockpit interior

You will also need to source a black paint of your choice for tyres, guns, engine and miscellaneous stuff in the cockpit.

Finally you will need to get the required colours to replicate the anti-corrosion coating for inside the landing gear.
My go to is 30-30-40 mix of clear blue, clear green and gloss clear sprayed over a bright aluminium base; however you can get away with 3:1 ratio of metallic blue mixed with clear green.

Guddo rakku
>>
>>6484539
Tamiya's XF-76 was made to suit the early zero. Some think it's a bit too pale and greenish, but it's pretty close at worst.

I think XF-70 was likewise made to be the deep green of the later zeroes. Checking the instructions for a Tamiya zero the belly is supposed to be AS-29, which seems to be more or less XF-76 in a rattlecan. XF-12 also appears to be something people use here, possibly an older idea with more recent research giving us XF-76.

XF-76 is a common recommendation for early war zeroes, but I've seen people say it's too pale and has a green tint where it shouldn't. Vallejo makes a darker "IJN ash grey" as part of its model air line that's available individually bottled or as part of a set with other IJN colors. I've also heard some people say that even this isn't right and that the real color should be closer to RLM 02 (made by everyone that makes RLM paints). The last option seems a bit too dark and not red enough to my eyes. All depends on what you believe, I guess.

>>6488235
I honestly thought you would abandon it but there ya go, you gonna gain some extra exp points with this one in patience
>>6488239
If people find it interesting then I did a good job
>>6488381
Yes! That's an excellent ref pic of what I was thinking but my inspiration was pic (not yet related). Also with what I did, even if it's less than what I wanted, I'm quite happy as I had a lot of doubts of how would it look like. I really like this kind of camo it's quite disruptive of the shape

The camo in the jagdpanther, never seen it in color but I always imagined brown and green or brown and yellow

>1/35 Hobbyboss t-35 is on sale for nearly half price

Does anyone have experience with this kit? I was thinking of getting it. It will be my first real attempt at a 1/35 vehicle. My modelling background up until now has been 1/72 aircraft particularly fighters. So this will be my first It's a big kit, longer but not wider than a King Tiger.

Also does anyone recommend any other 1/35 vehicle/tank kit suitable for a beginner?
>>
>>6488552
I'm gonna suppose you already have experience with moderate difficulty kits and an airbrush.
First of all, do you really like the t-35? If yes go for it unless you're a fucking disaster with the planes too and you will do something you like and therefore make an effort.
If you just want to dip the tip in afvs then any tamiya kit will be nice and easy with overhead to detailing if you want to, just have in mind that old kits are cheap for a reason. Tiger Model kits are also a pleasure to build but those are expensive. Also the Takom aml-90 (and 60 I guess) is a fun kit and really cheap so I recommend that one too.
About the workload the wheels/tracks will be the tedious part, the rest is quite fun and varied
>>
>>6488584
I do like the 35, I have a taste for the slightly bizarre and clunky looking. I especially those multiple turrets. Do you know if HobbyBoss decals are good? what about Tamiya? New Airfix kits have cartograph printed decals which are sublime, it's not a deal breaker if they're shit it just means I'll have to sink some money into new aftermarket ones.

weird request. I'm looking for a WW1 british officer in this style of uniform: cape, folded hat, rifleman.

Either 1/35 or 120mm. I'm not really sure what to even search for. Anyone got any ideas? Been watching Our World War and very inspired.
>>
>>6488602
Overall about tamiya don't worry as decals/whatever will be good unless the kit has been sitting on a shelve for 20 years, and even then they work with micro sol/set quite alright as afvs don't use a lot of decals anyway usually.
Never done a hobbyboss kit but I've done some form trumpeter (parent company) and the decals were alright. Although a red star is rather hard to fuck up anyway
>>
>>6488609
A body from a one of Tamiya's 1/35 ww1 british infantry (It also has plenty of weapons) with a head from one of ICM's 1/35 Anzacs. You'll probably have to sculpt the cape yourself as I can't find a figure with it. But Masterbox has an officer figure with a greatcoat.

That needs correction asap, you're probably a bit tired of redoing the thing but ya know, practice makes better. I had to clean and redo a lot of the char 2c to the point I hated the thing...

I started my journey into the hell that is resin.. i hate superglue already.

I tried to follow the advise you guys gave me about applying it with the tip of my knife. It didn't worked and then i made the big mistake of trying to drip a tiny bit of glue directly from the tube.. ;_;

At least the gearstick etc were no problem.

I learned my lesson for the next time. No i'll let the interior dry for the night and start with the tracks.
>>
>>6489727
How well did you clean it? Resin has release agents in it that make glue not adhere well and paint too. Resin is finicky
>>
>>6489736
i washed the parts with warm soapy water like i read it in a tutorial.

Hopefully the primer and the gun itself will hide most of my mess down in the bottom of the vehicle.
>>
>>6489727
superglue debonder is a must I find.

>>
>>6489607
Did you mix brown and white for that? A touch of red hidden in the brown and it can probably fall towards creamy pink-purple with the white added.
>>
I'm starting out and don't have any primer. If I want to get one can of spray, should I get a grey primer? It seems like the most neutral to paint onto. I'll be using acryllics.

>>6490413
Tonal variation =/= poor coverage. OP dun goofed
>>
>>6490368
I think that in this case doing marbling, a black primer with some marble moting and doodles in white, would been better as doing post shading of several colors that should weather evenly is rather hard and in your pick the only one is the green as far I can see and creates "bubbles" of fading highlights by color and not the whole scheme. Just have that in mind for the next one
>>
>>6490320
Yep, I have it that way to simulate bonds aging over time. It cracks and chunks fall off.

I did Airfix as a kid and want to pick up a kit. Iv'e had no experience with this for years. I think based on seeing this: >>6471024 and browsing a couple links in the OP I'm interested in either (semi) modern cars or landmarks.

Can anyone recommend a common scale that I'll be able to find models of both in, or will that not be possible?

Also a good starter kit?
