Anon was joking, but there is a history of Street Fighter toy lines ending when an Akuma figure is released.
>>
>>6457144
Weren't they on their way out? I mean, they were running out of shit to make.
>>
>>6457188
Sort of, the other figures they were planning were going to be released if pic related sold well. A lot of people were turned off hence the poor sales, and so they killed the line.
>>
>>
>>6456863
so...why did this figure kill the line?
>>
>>6458010
they kept making alot of figures for this series and basically over flooded it.
>>
>>6458085
I assumed it was because they made figures of the series people (read: Americans) didn't care about.
>>
>>6457207
I thought they ended up pushing out those last few Prometheus figures late last year, back when there was hype for Covenant.
>>
>>6458010
A mix of things. By that point in the line, they were releasing everything except for Reds as Tamashii Web exclusives, and making it hard to build the full team kinda defeats the purpose of Sentai figures. On top of that, Kyoryuger was too new in Japan to get nostalgiafag sales and hadn't been adapted for the US yet, so there just wasn't a lot of demand (and a fair bit of what little interest there was was put off by the fact that completing the team would either mean happening to place preorders during a very short window or paying aftermarket prices).

I still personally blame this figure for singlehandedly killing gi joe.

Yes the line has coninued on after its release, but the glut of this figure that clogged the pegs at many stores caused them to cut or cancel orders and it's been a downward spiral since.

As much as i hated that figure (its actually reallly great), the PoC line kept on going for like 10 waves after him and only stopped with Retaliation.

So no figure killed the GI Joe line(s).

Only Paramount and Hasbro themselves are to blame for the death of GI Joe.

Now here's a real killer. It went through clearance after clearance after clearance until it was truly gone.
I forget if any wave came after him, but the line was truly dead by that point and future waves were cancelled

The sentai line died because people stopped buying any of them new. They waited for them to pop up on the secondary market marked down a large amount. I remember the Akibaranger S2 girls being like 1k yen not even 2 months after release.
>>
>>6460151
they should have made ones people want. Akiba ranger season 2 figures? who tf was going to buy those
>>
>>6460151
The akiba rangers went as low as 300 jpy new in box. It's amazing how much of a key sink Akiba was considering how much effort toei and Bandai pit in it.
>>
>>6460151
I mean, if you make figures that are identical to previous ones except with different hair and different writing on their panties, what the fuck do you expect
>>
>>6458304
>Only Paramount and Hasbro themselves are to blame for the death of GI Joe.
I think they have a strong hand in it but what killed GI Joe, in my opinion anyway, is the market changing regarding vehicles and playsets (A former big draw from GI Joe), and cheaper military figure alternatives being so readily available.

>Market your figures as a """""""""budget""""""""" line for normies.
>An actually line of budget Mario figures comes out and normies eat it up because they sell for less than $10 each.

Bandai can be incredibly fucking stupid sometimes.
>>
>>6460290
You'd have a point if GI Joe died in 2005-2012, but by the time GI Joe stopped being supported by Target and Walmarts, there was no Bravo Team anymore and there was a complete dearth in 1:18 scale lines in general.

Target had already given up other military lines, had to carry a really cheap bbi off-brand a year later, since military figures were still in demand, but that was killed two years later.
WalMart always had Corpshit when GI Joe was running, but they dumbed that shit down back in 2010 and we've only seen a higher budget given to them only this year (likely because of the King Kong license).

The closest we got to a quality line after GI Joe was moved to being exclusive only was MGR's Task Force, which came out in 2014.
And the only reason Hasbro killed the GI Joe line starting this year, despite their last wave selling out at TRU, is because they want to reboot it. Toylines take roughly a year and a half to be created, so it matches up with the 2019 projected release of the next GI Joe movie
>>
>>6460339
On top of that he was also almost three times more expensive than the other figures in the line and had less articulation than the larger and cheaper WoN.
>>
>>6460373
>If you tally up the prices for each separate WON release at $10 and $4-$5, they usually add up to the $30-$40 effect sets

Really makes you think
>>
>>6460010
If I was a fwoosh fag I'd have bought articulated icons garbage and wouldn't need a 6" snake or storm
>>
>>6460525
The tradeoff is that you can buy the WON figures piecemeal - if you don't want a Goomba or whatever, you can just get the other stuff without it.
>>
>>6460152
we would still have WoN 6" figures coming if they had released Metroid and Bowser together and staggered DK and Ganon to waves 2 or 3.

and made DK not shit

and picked a slightly more popular character than WW ganondorf
>>
We all wanted skeletons so they make a 3.75" line where the first character is 5" in scale therefore it didn't really fit with 6" scales or 3.75 even if "in universe" he's tall. Then they follow up the skeleton with a human/skelly hybrid that no one wanted and the kick starter failed and killed the line and tehe company.
>>
>>6460531
They just fucked up making a 6'' line based on chunk and not height. Link, Samus, Sheik, etc should've been a $15-20 line at 6'' like every other 6'' line. The monster types could still be in box packages, maybe with some more articulation or an accessory, for $20, to really make it worth it.

I guarantee you the reason they picked WW Ganondorf, besides releasing a WW Link, was because he's a chunky enough design to work with their 6'' line aesthetics.
>>
>>6460530
Don't the WON figures also have articulation? As far as i saw, the Bandai not-main-characters are just statueshit.
>>
>>6460525
>>6460530
You can also argue that the Bandai versions are standard game sizes, while the woN versions are blown up to reflect their scale when they're playable characters.
>>
>>6458010
It didn't. Karate bugmen will always be more popular than grownups in spandex.

Bowser and his minions were the only shit releases. Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi are far superior to their Jakks releases.

They fucked up with the overall price creep, leaving half year waits between releases and making the last 2 releases TWEs and one was a goddamn repaint. I can guarantee you the line would still be alive if they delayed Bowser and released Peach and Toad after Yoshi.

If you're going to say a figure killed a line before it even came out, you have to lay equal blame on the figure that came out just a month before it, which unfortunately is Volnutt. A single release shouldn't be enough to kill a healthy toyline.

Another thing to consider is that Sentinel is a small company which just jumped on the Fate merch bandwagon. They probably postponed/cancelled the Rockman line to reassign its designers.
>>
>>6466342
>How did a He-man figure tank a line? Just curious.

>>6466386
>>6466379

Mattel fucked the 2002 line in the ass by making most of the cases for EVERY wave a variant of Skeletor or He-Man. Yes, those two are the most popular in their franchise, but when you're facing a wall of pegs filled with different He-Man and Skeletors, many of which are done up with retarded action features and looking nothing like they did on the show, that's bad. It was impossible to find characters like Evil-Lyn on the pegs because new heroes and villains were one figure each per case (So a case would have 1 Buzz-Off, 1 Evil-Lyn and eight Skeletor and He-Man variants, for instance). There was no way for stores to get rid of the back stock of He-Men and Skeletors in time to get decent helpings of new waves, and stuff like Smash Blade He-Man didn't even sell on clearance. Near the end of the line it was so bad that most US toy retailers just didn't order the final Snake Men waves, and they ended up mostly releasing internationally and in weird discount chains. And sadly, that wave actually had a decent case ratio compared to previous ones.

And all this was even worse because the corresponding TV series had very good ratings through the second season, but since the toys weren't selling Mattel of course pulled the plug on it and hasn't tried a retail MOTU line since (other than their 2-packs for Classics).
>>
>>6467075
I don't think Volnutt is to blame. Issue with that figure aside, the line had 4 recolor of the same figure for a year before X was released. Then Volnutt, a figure highly desired was announced. Then came Star Force, a figure idk who wants. There cool other figures were one release exclusives, so Cut man is impossible to get at a normal price. None of the other cool charters we want like proto man or zero will be release. It's pain.

And as a result, somehow they managed to pull off the best line imaginable for He-Man with Classics. MOTUC really is an amazing example of hating and screaming and cursing your way through hell and getting something truly incredible as a result. There's absolutely no way that a line as good as Classics would have been made if it were on retail shelves, even if you erased the 200X toy line debacle from history.

So really, the death of He-Man at retail turned out to be the best thing imaginable for fans of the figures.

>it really does look like an incredible achievement
It is. It just has the Mattel brand mark of shame, so it's looked at with an automatic air of disdain that diminishes the incredible scope of accomplishment that MOTUC achieved.

Same as DCUC. You weren't getting the -best- engineered figures in the world, but they pumped out a line of incredible depth that served up enough content to satisfy basically every niche of fandom. If you like lanterns, you got a shit ton of every faction out there. If you like batgod, you got him in several looks plus tons of villains. Legion got a big boxed set. New Gods got most of the important people. If CoIE was your favorite story of all time, you got all of the major players. Even Super Friends got enough love to build a shelf display.

DCUC did a great job of covering 80 years worth of comic content, but that perspective is lost when the focal point becomes the missteps and other metrics aside from the sheer mass of characters that you can now buy and display together.
>>
>>6467838

The problem with huge lines like this is that while they released a ton of characters, i didn't buy shit, because it was all just Superman and He-Man cosplaying as other characters.

So much redecos is fucking horrible and not worth paying premium prices over. Nevermind that their articulation was shit and only got worse as time went on.

Here's another line that was also plain shit, despite the massive amount of characters. Sure, the redecos fit this time, but that fucking articulation.

I think another issue is that there are people who will only buy these five figures from the line and be done with it.

>Is it too late to start on MOTUC
There's a typical latecomer's tax on the prized figures. If it's a core character expect to pay double the original price tag, or more. For example the Filmation Skeletor goes into the $100 range, and it's barely a year old. That is not unusual for the upper 5% of the figures, which are the most sought after.

But the good thing about MOTUC is that a huge amount of its strength rests in the obscure characters that just have awesome figures, and usually those figures are really reasonably priced.

Also if you're in the US, now would be the time to start collecting because they're on Mattel's online shop and their ebay store. Once those stocks get depleted I would expect the prices to teeter upwards.

>Many of the figures I think are out of production
They're all out of production, since it's subscription-based.

I have the 1UP mushroom Bandai gave away at cons.

It's fun to use with non-Mario toys.

They went all out with a line that at best made sense for the Japanese market. Doing MSiAs of so many G Gundam designs would have at least had a nostalgia draw for Japan, but even there G toy sales are frigid (see the lukewarm sales of Domon and Master Asia, sadly). In America it just meant pegs clogged with all the wacky stereotype Gundams kids had no attachment to.

How is the QC on the filmation Skeletor? Thinking about biting the bullet on one. Any good places to buy outside of Amazon?

You also forget some other things like having 2 different body styles they'd rotate between, despite 1 being obviously better than the other, the Go-Busters figuarts being absolute dogshit, low preorders from online retailers, and people waiting for reds to go on deep discount before even contemplating buying them.

I would have bought cut man if I knew he was exclusive at the time. I want him not but 4 inch nel isn't selling him.

>it was all just he-man cosplaying as other characters

Were you even in the 80's?

We had like four base molds for every action figure ever and they were still selling and pumping out toy lines.

Lots of other lines were cheapass in the 70s and 80s too, but that doesn't mean we get nothing but redecos for modern Marvel lines.

See also GI Joe, which started off with almost nothing but redecos with unique heads, and later became almost completely 100% new bodies until maybe 1991 or 1990.

>hurrhurrhurr its supposed to be cheap just like the 1980s
is just a shitty excuse from Mattel and hardcore fanboys.

Who's the gold dude? Sliver Surfer?

It's been fun watching this and the Mk 42 variant get progressively cheaper on Mandarake. They started out at about ¥8k apiece and are now down to ¥4k, cheaper than any of the Figuarts releases.

But was still probably higher quality. I got the large WoN figure and the paint apps on it are fucking shit.
