For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

Which Lancer? Cu? There's not a lick of red on him aside from the spear and I think even that was a bad design choice. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of that color scheme in the least.

It depends, if you think you're going to enjoy the hobby, yeah go for it, they'll save you some time and frustration. Otherwise, just get the 410s, or Squadron nippers, or Tamiya, or any of the other cheaper nippers, because you can always buy the GP nippers down the line.

How long should you wait till wet sanding mr sufacer? When its dry or till its cured?
>>
>>6454566
24hr is generally enough but I sanded it within 5 min of spraying on a few occasions.

Is it normal for the primer to spread around the piece when wet sanding. I just wipe it off but i think i'm sanding too early

Is there a blanket term/database for models that aren't "gundams" (mobile suits?) IE: Zaku, Gyan, etc.

I want to look through all of them and see if there are any that jump out at me other than gyancelot and char's.
>>
What is the actual difference between GP and god hands? If I'm not building 20 kits a day, does it really matter? I do about 1 kit a week or 2.
>>
>>6454612
God Hands are a meme, get GP. I don't think anyone here would defend spending 15-35 dollars more for them.
>>
>>6454605
It's not every model ever, but dalong.net has a pretty decent compendium. Just click a category, click the English Catalog button and away you go.
>>
>>6454617
Yeah, I have them and I'd agree, I won't buy another pair at $50. If you could get them for closer to $40 with shipping it'd be worth it.
>>
>>6454617
GP is a meme, Godhand is a meme, saying "___ is a meme" is a meme. Point is, results matter, and Godhand gives amazing results.

Seems to me, that the Gundam Planet shill is trying REALLY hard to get people to buy those nippers. Well that's fine and all, but God Hand are the best nippers I have ever used, and I am not going to go out and buy some cheaper ones to test the theory, lol.
>>
>>6454624
>If you could get them for closer to $40 with shipping it'd be worth it.
Can't you? These are the memepers in question here, right? https://hlj.com/product/GODSPN-120
If you ship them with something else you're right on the money.
>>
>>6454626
GH's are not remotely worth it over 50 bucks. They're 68 dollars for prime shipping or 50 for long shipping on amazon which is ridiculous.

If you remotely value your builds, it doesn't matter which you use because you'll be removing the nub more than just a clip - and probably be painting.

You're the shill.
>>
>>6454632
Yeah if you're willing to wait, go for it, but I know HLJ can take a while to get more in.
>>
>>6454632
That shipping speed makes me want to vomit.
>>
>>6454633
>over 50 bucks.
They are about $40 anon. Stop shopping at the highest priced stores.
>>
Getting my first ever MG - should I get Turn A or Char's Zaku? I was drawn to these for design and that they are both sub 40 dollars - which seemed to be rare for MG's. If both are mediocre/bad I'd consider something different. (Other than 78-2)
>>
>>6454638
I mean you're not wrong, but between shipping and/or the insane wait, it really devalues the 40 dollar tag.
>>
>>6454635
>>6454637
You guys don't preorder anything then, huh? Anyway, you can hold your vomit, HobbySearch has them for like $43. Again, bundle them and you're at like $45 shipped. Why is everyone talking about buying the things from Amazon where we know they're overpriced, anyway?
>>
>>6454639
Turn A comes with a cow, if that influences your decision.
>>
>>6454639
Turn and the Zaku II 2.0 are among the better MGs.

>>6454650

How is the Seravee 1/100?
>>
>>6454677
Haven't built one, but by all accounts, the 1/100 00 line is pretty solid.
>>
>>6454511
What I do is that I tilt the paint container after mixing in each drop of thinner, the paint should run off the sides but leave a thin film behind, that's when you know the paint is self-leveling.
>>
>want to start painting
>know how
>don't know what the fuck to buy or how to decide on which colors, etc.

God dammit. Do I just get a cheap HG zaku or something?
>>
>>6454698
Something cheap that has lineart available is what you're going to want so a Zaku is a decent place to start. You use Photoshop or whatever image editor you have to mockup the paint colors, then proceed to mix paint to match and get to work.

>>
>>6454622
not what he is asking at all. he is not asking for plamo that is not gunpla, he is asking for gunpla that is not a gundam.
>>6454605
sadly I don't think there are any good search terms for that. I mean the closest you can get is look for the bad guy faction of every series and look them up, they are guaranteed to have far fewer Gundams.

Heck just checking the mech list by faction of every series can help you narrow down from a glance which is a gundam and what isn't.
>>
>>6454712
Not panel lining, lineart. It's in relation to your
>how to decide on which colors, etc.
issue. Lineart is a picture of the Gendum in question without any color added, so just the lines. You can use an image editor to apply possible color schemes to get a feel for how they look like >>6454264 did.
>>
>>6454720

>>
>>6454887
A single cut will leave more residue behind because you're unlikely to be able to place the blade of the nippers totally flat on the piece when it's still on the runner. That's the reasob most gunpla manuals recommend you cut twice.

It's also worth using a separate nipper to do the initial cuts since by nature the first cut is through thicker plastic. That way you can preserve the edge on your main pair longer.
>>
>>6454920
Yeah its fantastic, lots of bulk and accessories and pretty good articulation. Just got me a second one

I want to get into painting, and for what I understand, I just need to buy primer + a few spray paints. I am not looking to do weathering or anything yet.

Am I correct in what I'm saying? Should i buy Tamiya?
>>
>>6455000
you should buy an airbrush
>>
>>6455002
I'm not going to buy an airbrush for my first ever paint. I will definitely do that if I enjoy painting though.
>>
>>6455000
You can buy any spraypaint, but Tamiya ones have a nozzle that makes the paint come out in a finer mist compared to ones used for painting cars.

For a quick job, yes, just was the parts (optional) prime and then paint. If you're not gonna be touching a whole lot, top coat is optional as well.

If you do get the feel for painting, getting an airbrush will save you a whole lot of money, since spraycans costs too much and a lot of wastage on overspray. The initial cost may seem a bit high but the saving on the long run is hundredfold.

You can splurge out for a 5 million dollar compressor + 15k dollar airbrush like people here do on your first go or sacrifice 50 bucks on a Chinese kit to get the hang of it and get better equipment later on.
>>
>>6455023
If I want really matte finishes, do I still do a topcoat? Is that just like a sealant?

I do not want it shiny.
>>
>>6455049
You can get semi gloss and matte topcoat

Its funny seeing the kings of gunpla struggle so much on something everyone else seems to get right, if they'd just let go of their restrictive HG practices and put a bit of money in they could easily take a piece of Koto's pie.
I suppose they don't feel like investing as much as an entire new line or models above 20$ just for a niche, but why even bother making them shitty HGs when the casuals won't care for them and the people who want cute girls will go to Koto instead. A Gunpla equivalent of the AGP line featuring more than just build fighter stuff, with MG budgets and good sculpts would print money.
I think Bandai has really underestimated the value of more expensive but high quality kits, its all HGs nowadays, when there is still a lot of money to be made from experienced builders or hobbyist willing to spend more than kids would, which overlaps with the more "mature" audience FAGs and MDs appeal to.

Depends on your location and what brands you can get your hands on.

Different brands have different make-ups and can react in a negative way if you are layering them.

There are different kinda of paints with pros and cons and wrapping your head around it all can be daunting(atleast it is for me). But the more you research what is available to you and what colors/detail you'd like to paint you can find paint that should work as a jumping off point.

Theres no universal preference of paint by brand, at this stage in the hobby it becomes more experience based and personal preference.

I'm currently in the priming process with my current kit and this is the plan I'm following:

Prime > Paint (lacquer) > Paint details (acrylic) > Panel lines (enamel)

Is there any danger of the acrylic thinner messing up the lacquer, or the enamel thinner messing up the acrylic? I've read that enamel thinner doesn't interact in any way with the lacquer coat, so that seems safe. But I don't know about other two situations.

I'm using all Tamiya branded products, hoping they all play nice together.
>>
>>6458396
>acrylic thinner
depends, are you using x20a? if so, then no.
>or the enamel thinner messing up the acrylic
no
>>
>>6458396
>I'm using all Tamiya branded products, hoping they all play nice together.
They will if you are not retarded.

Each thinner contains _small_ quantities of components that can attack the other coats, for example acrylic thinner contains alcohol which can attack lacquer if you let it pool and then rub it with a q-tip.

tl;dr spray thin coats, let it cure before applying the next coat.
>>
Does rubbing alcohol affect lacquer at all?

>>6458430

>>6458446

>That's insane.
I told you what to do to avoid new coat attacking the existing one, it's up to you how to use that information.

I once painted a coat of acrylic and then immediately followed with a wet coat of lacquer topcoat which completely melted the acrylic but I knew it wouldn't affect the end result so who cares.
>>
>>6458496
>let it cure for a day
Doesn't lacquer cure really quick, like in an hour or less?
>>
>>6458504
probably, maybe if I was doing thin coats, I'd be baby-sitting my pieces to add a thin coat every hour for the whole day. I don't have time for that, rather do it all in one session and let is dry+cure the whole day for the same result.
>>
Is Mr Super Clear UV Cut worth it? I use vallejo paints for now, so will anything be affected?
>>
>>6458442
It does. In large enough quantities iso alcohol affects any paint.

You can even use 99% iso in sonic cleaner to strip paint super quickly.
>>
>>6458504
as far as I know, lacquer dries extremely fast and cures mostly quite fast too. but lacquer retracts on itself quite a bit towards the full cure (and it cures to a really hard finish) so you want to paint all layers in one go, rather than waiting for layers to fully cure inbetween goes. otherwise you can end up cracking the lower layers with the newer ones. Another reason to wait between coats would be if you're using rougher thinners on the top layer coats so if the lower layers arent fully cured the thinner will eat down, possibly ruining the finish (less of an issue if you only use a single type of paint)

This is, as far as I'm aware, what it looks like out of the box.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that it has incredibly limited articulation since it's from the 80s, back before polycaps and other quality of life stuff existed. So the parts basically move on one axis (ie the legs move forward and back, but not to the sides)
I'm considering it, but I don't know how much I really like the Gelgoog. There's also a 1/60 Dom (and a Char Gelgoog)
No point in getting a 1/60 RX-78 or Zaku/Char Zaku since they have proper PGs nowadays.

>>
>>6458684
Depends on the shop. Generally you'll find more military and plane models than gunpla, and the price is usually higher than average. Chain stores will more likely carry them, and Barnes and Noble sometimes carries them.

Also, if you live in a major metropolitan area, the Chinatown or Little Tokyo areas tend to have shops that carry them. Otherwise Amazon is good, just check where it's being shipped from.

Nah, I can see it being a good project for someone that wants to flex their modeling skills and take on a challenge. It would also be a good way to keep busy for a while and stretch your dollar a little further if you're on a budget.

Plus, with old kits you get these charming goofy sculpts that you just don't see anymore.

It's definitely not worth it for the other 1/60s that have PGs, but if someone really loved the Gelgoog that's all it has in that kind of scale. You've just gotta embrace it as a passion project, man. That and I don't think I can overstate too much that it's like $20. Well, I guess closer to $30-35 after shipping. Still, it's cheaper than the MG.

As the other anons have said, it might just be the nubs. The male pegs on the ball aren't really long, and the females are kind of shallow, so it might just be some small nubs you missed that're keeping them from fitting flush. Try taking it apart and inspecting the inner frame + insides of the outer parts, then see if it fits together properly.

I kinda did that, but with the MG 3.0.

I built the RX-78-2 RG with a friend a few weeks before that, which completely turned me off due to how flimsy it was.
>>
>>6459246
As long as you don't put on a super thicc coat, then the decals and whatnot will be fine. If anything, it helps hide the edges better
>>
>>6459550
Building my first MG now, and it's the 3.0. Freaking love this guy.

When I was messing around with the fingers I accidentally pulled some off, and now the pinky doesn't really look like it belongs there. Are all the fingers the same length for MG kits?
>>
Are both Shin Mushas bodies the same, besides the gold chrome and extra display accessories?

I want to get the Sengoku No Jin for the display, but prefer the flat matte gold of the non-Sengoku version, so I would rather buy both, but build the basic version and then throw in the accessories from the Sengoku version with it.

Most MG kits don't have the articulate hands like the 3.0 does. The ones that do usually depend on if its a feddie or zeek suit, but they all have the same finger lengths.

they're waterslides, the decal sheet is actually pretty big since they are using some of the markings to cover up parts in the wrong color.

it seems like Bandai was keeping things simple with this kit, the parts included are exactly the same as the regular Jegan type D, even though the colors on some parts are quite different. instead of creating a new mold for the beam rifle they actually throw in the entire A runner from the HGUC Marasai, so it has a lot of extra hand and joint parts that just get thrown away.

If they're anything like their star wars waterslides you may be better off just painting the one parts. Bandai's waterslides have been shit tier recently from what I've experianced. They have like no adhesion.

Painting question:

Sand > Vallejo surface acrylic primer > Tamiya acrylic (thinned) > lacquer top coat > enamel

If the primer has cured properly, would the thinned paint have any effect on the primer? Considering that the Tamiya is alcohol based as well, would it have any negative effects?

I don't know if Eva is normally welcomed here but this is Plamo. I have the Bandai LM HG Eva Unit- 01 Test Type. I and semi new to gunpla and out of the 7 kits I've built I've never been so confused as to what it wants me to do. Anyone else build this kit and know what to do? I might just be retarded after all

>>

Should be fine as long as you let the primer cure for a bit first and don't go overboard with the paint. Paint a thin layer first, let it dry, and then go over it again
>>
Not sure if the right place to ask, but does anyone know what kind of fabric to use for 1/12 scale figures? I have some things I want to try with Star Wars kits, but I have no idea what to use, and the kama material isn't that great, but it's at least thin

It really does.

The only time plastic cloth unironically look good is if they're sculpted in a flowing motion like on scale figures. You can literally see the thickness of the plastic on the edges of the cloak. With some folding and pressing you could at least get real cloth to look interesting

>for less stuff than the original Sandrock...

It has the shield and the uzi as well. Sandrock Custom is by far the laziest of all the EW "upgrades", there's no difference from the base form whatsoever beyond the paint job. The only thing this release has going for it if you can paint is the cloak.
>>
Was the Sandrock well-liked or something? The other EW kits look like they offer more (I don't think you can get the Tallgeese outside of P-Bandai or a third party kit) so why lead off with the Sandrock Custom?
>>
>>6461098
Do you live in opposite land or are you just horribly misinformed? Sandrock Custom vEW is the very last vEW kit to be released. Which is funny considering it's by far the easiest one to make.
>>
>>6461070
I'm honestly considering this so I can lewd plastic robutts.
>>
>>6461085
It's not supposed to be a repaint, but Bandai seems to have made it a repaint.

There are physical differences in the face, and also the verniers that allowed it to move around in space. But these are not present here at all in this kit.

You're thinking of the original anime's version. Katoki's version of the Sandrock has always had the exact same number of thrusters as the Custom version, as well as the same face.

As for the face, all of the gundams share the exact same head as their upgrades, with only the Wing Zero sorta being different from the Wing thanks to its head feathers being able to open up. I think the MG Deathscythe vEW has a slightly different v-fin than the Hell's too, but I'm pretty sure that was a result of having to mold it in two parts.

The MG Wing vEW line was designed to be as easy to convert into the Custom forms as possible. That's why it was so confusing it took so damn long for them to come out.
>>
>>6461135
To be fair, if they're supposed to just be "custom" versions and not full on upgrades it makes sense to keep the heads the same.

Not that that excuses the Wing vEW and the WZC of course. But apparently Dr. J was just the most uncreative designer ever in EW.
>>
>>6461135

Sandrock custom has verniers in the shoulders where the yellow squares are.

The P bandai mg wing kits are supposed to be based off their appearance in the OVA, not the newer manga where it is a literal copy paste.

It's alright so far, the rubber stuff on the arms looks and feels weird. It is an old kit though, and apparently not the most color accurate Eva kit out there. I've heard the Kotobukiya Rebuild kits are the good ones but I don't like the shiny design that the rebuilds had
