Japan has loved Anthropomorphised stuff since the 80's and early 90's. Kankolle is evolved from the Mecha Shoujo fandom that got its start with the early MS girls illustrations and shows like Iczer 1 and Galaxy Freuline Yuna(amoung many others)

As for Animal Ear characters and other anthro/furry stuff, they have been a staple of media since before the Egyptians chiseled fucking Cat Heads onto thier gods.

Basically, the moe anthropomorpization thing isn't some sudden fad, it's just comming out as a more robust mainstream fandom.

I guess my surprise is that there's less hype than there is, especially when you look at other classics from similar eras, and the amount of fanfare their 15th and 20ths got by comparison.

The series is getting Pullips, this new Figma, a bunch of stationery goods, and animate cafe is hosting an Utena-themed cafe at their Ikebukuro branch this summer.
