For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

Just bought this kit for my first build.
https://www.amazon.com/Bandai-Hobby-Mk-II-Gundam-Model/dp/B014SCW5LW

Also bought:
Tamiya X18 semi-gloss black
Tamiya XF53 flat neutral gray
Tamiya XF2 flat white
Tamiya X11 chrome silver
Tamiya X10 gun metal

And a can of Tamiya gray spray primer and flat lacquer for the topcoat. Also got a thing of Tamiya paint thinner, some sandpaper, nippers and X-acto knife, and this set of brushes: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZYLJ5NQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A3V2I5CBZVDG8N

I've heard bad things about synthetic brushes but I figure we'll just see and worst case scenario I'll pick up a few at a local crafts store.

How did I do, /toy/? I can still cancel/modify some of the orders if needed.

>Painting your first build
I'm not sure if you're brave, ambitious or stupid. Maybe all three. I wish you luck at any rate but you're going to want to get some plastic cement to seam weld too if you're painting.
>>
>>6444902
If I wasn't going to paint my first build, I'd buy legos.
>>
>>6444902
>>6444907
Also, thanks for the tip. I've been doing some basic research but hadn't looked too much into making the seams look better yet. My initial plan was to use this as more of an experiment, mistakes are okay, I'm just curious how the paint will turn out.
>>
>>6444912
maybe you could add an airbrush to your order
brush painting sucks hard mane
>>
>>6444958
I considered it, but wanted to start off cheap-ish. I had a $75 Amazon gift card that I forgot about so the entire order only cost me like 30 bucks including kit and supplies. This is just going to be my test run to see if I even enjoy building it, if I decide I don't want to paint I'll just assemble it and it'll probably look like shit, but that's okay. This is just my first take to figure out if I'm going to get another model and if so, how I'm going to make it look good.
>>
>>6444965
I'd highly suggest just straight building it and not putting the stickers on at first, as you can always go back and add them later if you decide you don't' want to paint it.
>>
>>6444846

The second kit only got released a week ago.

It would be a boring group build since the only difference between the two kits is different head/hair pieces.

I have had a couple gunpla HGUC kits, the asshimar and the generic grunt guy... "RGM79GS"

I wish they were bigger and heavier though, is there a better option for a gundam without tons of wings to break? I am still a bit of a noob, but not terribly inexperienced... Ideally I would like a 6" - 8" hefty gundam without a shield so I can play with it, rather than it fall apart or feel like it would fall over when I am finished putting it in a pose.
>>

>Ideally I would like a 6" - 8" hefty gundam without a shield so I can play with it, rather than it fall apart or feel like it would fall over when I am finished putting it in a pose.
Sounds like 1/100s would be great for you. Browse Dalong's MG catalog http://dalong.net/review/mg/mg_cata1_e.htm, click on different robots to get reviews (in Korean, but Google translate helps), and place an order wherever you like. Amazon's usually not a bad option for Gunpla, especially if you have Prime..
>>
What kind of shipping does AmiAmi have? The prices look great, especially for the models I'd want to try.
>>
>>6445307
Their shipping is very, very good. Since they mainly deal with anime figures they fill their boxes are with packing paper and bubble wrap, so most of the time your kits arrive without even a dent on their boxes. However, they use a lot of it, and because they have less variety in box sizes compared to sites like HLJ/Amazon their shipping costs are usually pricier than other counterparts.
>>
>>6445316
Would shipping be greater than $6 for a single HG? I'm going to start with Rick-Dom because it's a simple, very cheap model that I like. On AmiAmi, it's the equivalent of about $12, whereas on Amazon I get free shipping, but it's $18.
>>
>>6445319
Use hlj for an estimate of shipping first.

Amiami uses a lot of trees (or more likely recycled paper) in their box packing.
>>
>>6445325
I found another model I like just as much for even cheaper on Amazon, so I'll probably do that first. Thanks for the tips, though!
>>
>>6443372
>>6444462
Thanks for the help, I know what I must do.
>>
>>6445327
They also don't undervalue their boxes so if you're buying something over like $30 you should expect to pay a customs charge

Managed to lose the command antenna from my Char's Zaku II (Origin). I don't have the bald head any more either. My only option is to fill the hole with blutac and paint it, but the only red paints I have are Vallejo Heavy Red and Bloody Red, which obviously aren't the correct shades.
Do you think it'd be possible to get the correct shade by mixing one of them with Bonewhite? I don't have a pure white so that'd be my only option without buying more paint.
>>
>>6445514
Do you still have the runners? Grab the reddish runner clip off a piece of the label tag thing on it without indented letters, cut and sand it to shape, and glue it in place.
>>
>>6445523
No, I unfortunately don't. I have runners from a Hi-Nu and a RG GP01 lying around, so I could make the antenna, but I'd still have to paint it.
>>
can anybody give me some quick pointers on panel lining after airbrushing?

I have looked at some youtube videos and some HowTo's but nobody really covers it that well
>>
>>6444685
Wow, my work in progress made it to the OP, now I feel uncomfortable about not getting the joint caps done yet.

>>6445068
I did not even consider that the colors matched dark spinner, that is cool. I just for the heck of it decided to try out 50s style turquise, completely slipped my mind Dark Spiner already did that. So now I could either continue my weird pursuit of that 50s color theme and throw in white accents here and there and try my hand at chrome, or make it dark spiner themed with purple and red.

The proportions seem fine to me, might just be some weird posing in that picture due to it's rather loose ankles meant I had to do some poses of the legs not seen in the show
>>
>>6445585
Put a clear coat on after painting (NOT a topcoat). This will protect your paint job and also means you'll be able to wipe off mistakes without ruining the paint.
Once you're done panel lining, top coat.

My newest GM repaint, compared to my very first. I might need to re-do Venom.
>>
>>6445585
1. Wait for the paint to cure. This is non-negotiable and will save you from a shit load of possible problems.
2. Spray a gloss coat. Don't go overkill on this, you just want a thin layer for protection.
3. Wait for the gloss coat to dry too! Give it overnight.
4. Do decals.
5. Spray another gloss coat.
6. Wait for that one to dry too!
7. Do the wash.
8. Spray a gloss coat over the wash too if you're worried the final flat coat will react poorly.

This is the full overkill method, you can adjust the number of gloss coats you actually decide to use based on your preferences. But if you want to be absolutely safe, you do this.

(The fact you might spray so many coats is the main reason you need to keep them thin.)
>>
>>6445758
You should only do the decals before the wash if you're in a situation where the decals go over the lines. Otherwise it's safer to do the decals afterwards, and even then if you're handy with a knife you should be able to expose the panel line.
>>
>>6445585

Gloss coat on top of the basecoat (in my experience it doesn't need to be perfect high gloss or anything, just a smooth surface).

Use an enamel wash like the Tamiya panel line accent and clean up the excess with lighter fluid.

Do your final clear coat, flat clear is the most popular.

Got this cool HO-scale (1/87) Roco Minitanks Pz. IV H at a hobby and train shop in new mexico. They are little austrian-made partially pre-built plastic models that have great detail for the size. Stuff like the machine gun, winch, spare wheels etc. have to be glued on, which is great because it lets you paint the tires on the spare wheels. All the spaced armor is removable, and the commanders hatch can be opened.

I don't have any other stuff in HO scale but I really like these little guys.

I custom designed and built a coreXY FDM printer. But that's completely beside the point. They charge a fee for separate units and fusion 360 only exports stls per object. And even with SLS sprues can help protect small parts because they have to clean and polish the pieces before shipping it out.

What do you know about 3d printing?

What's the probability of normie (non gunpla) modellers making the mistake of gluing the joints into place? How do they know it's supposed to be kit that has points of articulation?
>>
>>6448830
Glue is unnecessary. If you want to use it I would suggest building the thing without it then playing around with the model, and then you can choose what you want to glue down, say exceptionally loose parts or what have you.

I'm not a huge fan of the wrapped limbs...conceptually cool, but unfortunately like the other guy said, they kind of look like turds. You might have had better mileage actually using some kind of bunched fabric tube or crinkled plastic, like that new Patlabor kit did.

The rest of it is stellar though. Great colors, and I love the beam tusks.

I think this is the first time I've seen any sort of reasonable looking result from the "just went to town with an xacto" method. Uh, good on you, I guess.
>>
>>6449200
>>6449201
Uh, is it larger than I think it is or something? My desk can fit around 4 average MG-size sprues on it when laid down flat on the table. This sprue holder looked to me like it had the footprint of maybe 1.5 sprues...

Or maybe you just don't consider a 4-sprue desk "small." It seems small to me though, while I'm building I always have to move stuff off to the floor or stack my sprues in a box and dig through them cause I don't have enough space.
>>
>>6449219
I can fit at best 2 sprues side to side on mine, so yeah, your definition of small is probably not the same. I have to put all the sprues on the box and the box on my lap pretty much.
>>
>>6449219
Lots of desks might start to seem tiny when you're juggling sprues. If you have empty space for that holder your area probably isn't truly small but it's functionally small for the task you're performing.

Why did you buy a thing and then explicitly go out of your way not to use it? It's like buying an electric juicer and then continuing to hand-squeeze your oranges.

Also, what do you mean by barely holds anything? It seems to hold runners up to the letter O. Or do you mean it does a poor job of holding the runners?

Improving the jointing for a HGUC GM command. It requires some modification of the kit, like carving out the shoulders and I don't know if the shoulder joints (right tree, bottom center) will hold up at that scale. If they don't I'll just change them to balljoins.

I'm also slightly changing the proportions, though the arm joints can fit the original arms with some modification. The thighs won't fit though.
>>
>>6449414

More thinner than paint for sure. You could start with ~1.5-2:1 in favor of thinner and change to more paint if it's too thin for your liking.

>(assembling Zoids is a particularly huge nightmare)
Koto kits, Zoids especially, are not too friendly with these things. Too many duplicate runners combined with all those C1, K2, etc that Koto has a hardon for. Granted it DOES greatly narrow the numbers of runners left on a pile to sort through when you cant find the runner on the rack.

>inb4 just put those runners on the leftover slots
This is Koto, and especialy in the case of zoids, they often hit O for runners.
>>
>>6450016
I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you, just look around to see what kit of any mobile suit you want is considered the best incarnation and go for that. I'm autistic too so I just separated them in different groups to get around the scale problem.
>>
>>6450016
I stick with 1/100 because 1/144 is too small for me, but that also restricts the available kits. If you're trying to stick to one scale for a collection, I'd say go 1/144. HGs are pretty good, but you can always fit in RGs if you want. Also, stickers aren't really as bad as people say if you don't want to paint.
>>
>>6450016
depends.
>Would you like to do more posing?
MG, most RGs tend to get called hand grenades when trying to pose them. Especialy ones with transformations or core fighter elements. MkII is regarded as the most stable
>Do you want a wide variety of kits?
MG is better for that since been around a lot longer
>afraid of dealing with sanding and properly trimming tiny pieces
MG is better then
>very limited space?
go with RGs
>want as good color separation as humanly possible to limit any need for painting details?
RGs are usually better here. huge amount of color seperation
>do not like stickers too much?
Unless you are going to be trying to get waterslide versions of the stickers then MG is probably better here. MG tends to use a combination of stickers and dry transfer decals, RG however only has stickers, a LOT of stickers.

both are very good for higher details and articulation then HGs, but they both have enough differences to not be easy to say which is superior.

If you were to collect one scale exclusively, then 1/100 scale is better. The only thing RG's do better than MG's is color separation. Otherwise, they're much more fragile, they're harder to assemble, and there's less of a variety of them.
As far as HG's go, it's really personal preference for scale there I guess. HG's are much less detailed than most MG's, and I find that they are less satisfying to assemble.

I find myself kind of ambivalent on the magical girls at this point. I'm super hyped for Archer and Kunoichi but somehow those two aren't quite doing it. This design>>6451785 is pretty interesting though. Looks like they figured out how to make a "skirt" that won't ruin everything, too.

Not as a rule, no, but it's okay in doses. Base is great despite being all but flat but the concept art for the night version was better. The nice thing about Fumikane is that he can draw the full range
from flat to fat and he has a knack for making his average busts look really damn good. Guy's got something for everyone.

I'm pretty new to gunpla, when I clip off my pieces, there is generally some "stress" marks, or lighter color plastic etc under it - even if I use a hobby knife to cut it down.

Don't buy package tool deals on Amazon. They're shit and you're better off assembling a toolkit yourself. Get some 1000 grit and 2000 grit sandpaper and clean off those nubs. And read the guide. And then after you do that go back and actually read the guide.

I don't think they can reuse any of command wolf. two different sizes to start with. Konig is roughly same size as the Ligers. and then the limbs are completely different, so good thing they couldnt do that as the konig deserves better engineering.
>>
>>6452140

God hands are actually good, but overpriced because the GundamPlanet nippers are almost the same thing for cheaper usually (if t hey have their free shipping promo).

Other nippers cut from both sides and basically crimp cut, the godhands and GP nippers cut from one side with a much sharper edge so it has a fine cut.
>>
Built the Barbatos Lupus last night and while the assembly was fun, I am not a fan of the finish product. Hands pop off super easy, really difficult to pose, shoulders feel janky as fuck, model bends over with the weight of the greatsword.

Do other kits from this line have this problem? I'm interested in the Dantalion but I have a feeling it'll look like garbage once assembled out of box.
>>
>>6453036

Some do, but on average the IBO line is fairly solid
> I'm interested in the Dantalion but I have a feeling it'll look like garbage once assembled out of box.
Dantalion does need some work. The Anchor Arms had issues with the arms staying connected to the shoulder joints because they're heavy. I'm sure topcoat will fix it, but I haven't gotten to that step yet.

Can someone explain to me why anyone would buy godhands? Either way you want to clip the middle of the nub attached to the runner so you can sand/file it away right?

There is no way god hands cut close enough to completely remove the nub and require no more steps. I literally don't understand them.
>>
>>6453246
I thought they allowed you to cut closer without the risk of stress marks.
Always viewed it as one of those tools that let you work a bit faster but aren't essential.
>>
>>6453101
I did this as my first build, and I agree with what you're saying. The shoulders are shit and the hands/greatsword interaction is horrible. The left hand doesn't even hold the sword in place for me.

I'm going for lupus rex next since its much cooler and hopefully with less problems. Though I already know the claws dont come painted which is ass.
>>
>>6453246
He's got it right here: >>6453252. They certainly let me work faster, and I can cut much closer to the part itself without having to worry about stressing the plastic. Also, I've yet to encounter any plastic that resisted the God Hands in the least.
