I think I know why the Queens neck looks awkwardly thin, and yes it's because Disney Store cheaped out at the last minute, and removed a head/neck accessory that would have helped hide this issue.

If you look at this D23 early concept art for the LE Queen you'll notice that they meant for her to wear a fancy hair net type thing that would have held her long hair inside. By removing this hair net her neck issue becomes very noticeable.

If you also look at the image you'll notice that she was supposed to have white beads under her neck which would have also helped hide this skinny neck issue.

Disney Store cheaps out on an important accessory, and the doll looks wonky now.

I actually like the holes, it matches how her wishing well outfit looked in the original. It's actually one of my favorite scenes because she peeks at the prince through the curtains and quickly tries to smooth her skirt and her hair before going out on the balcony, and it's this really sweet/sad moment because here she is in these rags and I just uuughhh. I love Snow White so much.

Looking at the doll for a different angle shows that she might have her hair up in a bun behind her head. So they went ahead, and kept the long hair, but instead of putting it in a fancy hair net which would have helped hide her scrawny neck they just hid it behind her head in a bun to save money on the fancy hair net.

That's a nice doll. I think I'll just take my old 17" Snow White doll shown in this image, and put her in an extra LE box I have.

I find it really hard to justify paying $127 (after tax) for such a simple looking doll even if it is Snow White. She doesn't even have a low LE number. I thought LE Ariel was bad with a 1 of 6000 until I found out that this Snow White is going to be 1 of 6500.

If shes one of your top three grail dolls, and you have the extra cash to burn, and know you wont have any type of financial expenses coming up soon I guess I'd go for it? If you're going to spend almost $1000 why not just save up a little more,and get the superior original version? This new one will never take the place of the original, and you know it. This thread got me to finally pull the trigger, and place my old 2004 17" Snow White doll inside of an extra LE Jasmine box I had in storage. Took the old yet new doll out of her crappy pink box while keeping her strapped to her inner box that has a really nice woods back drop, and placed it inside of the white LE box, and it actually fit! She looks really nice inside her new LE box. I got the inspiration to do this years ago when I saw someone who created their very own ooak LE Wedding Ariel doll by putting her inside of an extra LE box they had.

Have you ever seen the adult collector section at the Hallmark store, and taken a look at their color vomit section of Disney figurines or that section of the store that sells ugly stylized Disney figurines that look like they've been carved from wood even though they aren't wood. I guess these companies feel that you have to stylize something or fuck with the colors in order to make it look like an adult item. Don't ask me why they do this. I too feel it's retarded.

I get your frustration, anon. It was one of the first things to piss me off about that LE Ariel doll when I first saw it a few years back, and the reason I didn't buy her when she was at a fair price. It took me a very long time to get used to her in that non-canon bra color. It finally grew on me, and I just view it as a nice variant Ariel doll.

I found a naked 17" singing Snow White doll at the Goodwill a few months back. I might just put this dress on her, and recreate my own LE Snow White doll like the person in this image had done.

I know it wouldn't be an official LE doll, but I would save $900 which I don't have, and she would look really nice on display. Since I have a few empty white LE boxes. I could just line her up with my other mint in box LE dolls.

It's not failing, but this is a way they can save money for sure. By incorporating the Barbie Collector site into Barbie as a whole they don't have to pay to host the BC website, which is an image-heavy site that includes hundreds of pages for new and old dolls, hosts user uploaded photos and is more or less useless since a lot of the Collector dolls can be purchased at the regular Barbie.com anyway. I'm sure they are also hoping that this expands the audience for the Collector dolls, since people are less likely to associate them with exclusive/expensive items if they're just on the standard Barbie shop.

It sucks because there's absolutely no way that the dolls will be organized as wonderfully as they are on the current BC site when they merge with regular Barbie site.

The books are so much better. I don't know why the movies basically say "fuck it!" to everything the books have set up, including character design. For instance why is Gaston's son a pirate? I think my budget will only allow me to buy one LE doll next month, and I'm having a hard time choosing between getting Snow White or the Evil Queen. To be honest I'm not crazy about either other them, but I don't want to regret not getting at least one a few years from now.

Snow White is the star of the film, and it would be nice to finally have an official LE Snow White in my collection, but just like last years LE Belle shes in a variant outfit which almost feels like I'm not getting the real deal. It's nice enough I guess, but every time I look over at it I'm always reminded of the fact that she not in her iconic yellow dress, and it's bugged me all year.

The queen is at least in her iconic outfit, but I feel like they could have done so much more with her. The dress is extremely underwhelming, and that thin neck looks horrible. I can't even say that the Queen would be worth more in the future, because the LE Maleficent never went up much.


Does anyone here prefer one over the other or see how owning one over the other would be worth more down the road ?

Are the adult collectors of today the last of a dying breed?

Are dolls in general just not as popular today as they were a few decades ago do to the rise of smart phones?

Have adult doll collector prices just reached a price point which is so high that it forces the average middle class doll collector to cherry pick or really think twice about their purchase?

Have companies gotten so cheap with the quality of their dolls that it's turned off enough of the adult doll collecting community?

It's Mattel completing a self-fulfilling prophecy. Sales are down... because they led them there. For the past 10 years, particularly the last 5 years, the quality of Barbie collector dolls has dropped drastically--while prices have raised. Mattel has repeatedly disappointed collectors, especially BFC members, with lackluster releases and horrible quality control. It has gotten to where some shops which usually stocked new BC dolls started saying they would not take pre-orders because Mattel gave them shipments full of dolls with wonky eyes, visible seams, etc and wouldn't refund them.

A lot of former Barbie Collectors have moved on to other brands where the quality is higher, even if they don't get the more popular licenses or have as many releases. Or they are only buying older dolls.

They are my least favorite princesses, and I held out on getting them for years because I really don't like their personalities at all, but couldn't pass them up this year do to the sidekicks. the sad thing is that the backgrounds are not that bad (minimalistic in a good way), but everything else about the packaging is freaking horrible.

The thing I hate the most about Mattel's newer dolls is that none of them wear tights or socks anymore. They either remove them from a character's design or lazily paint them on. I miss those little details.

Descendants are cute but new dolls only come out with the movies or whatever they do with their webisodes. I'm assuming the Descendants 2 dolls are out since the movie airs on Friday. They have a couple characters they still haven't implemented yet. All in all, they're not awful but it was Disney's way of taking a stab at what EAH used to have and I guess it worked. Their names are stupid though, completely uncreative. At least EAH put some thought into their names.

If you look at /mhg/, Mattel scrapped a SDCC 2pack for Monster High and is now branding it as adult collection but it's grouped in with the rest of their dolls so if you want it you have to search it. Well the new Barbie site launched. It's now "Barbie Signature" with different membership options. You can no longer view old dolls, it's just dolls that are available for purchase. Also you have to have a Gold or Platinum membership to post on the forums. Lame!

I noticed something I thought was worth sharing.

As we know Disney Store doll creators couldn't find a way to include Sleeping Beauty's Spindle in last years Aurora/Maleficent set even though the spindle was shown on the boxes artwork and, would have been a nice touch, but they somehow found a way to include it in the upcoming Rapunzel/Flynn Rider set even though in the film Rapunzel the Spindle is nothing more than a Sleeping Beauty Easter egg?

They make so many mistakes do to their lack of knowledge of Disney films that I doubt they did this on purpose, and I'm sure it's just a happy coincidence. Yeah, Descendants lore will contradict a lot of things. The villains are essentially contained on the Isle so that none of their magic remains in the rest of the world. But they decided that the kids of the villains did nothing wrong (well, Ben decided) so he brought a few over and through Wicked World we got more. As of now their total count is Mal, Evie, Carlos, Jay, and Freddie with CJ and Zevon managing to sneak in via Freddie and putting a spell on Mal.

The Melissa de la Cruz novels are good--I'd even say the first one is really good, the other 2 are more twee since they were written after the first film came out and they were influenced by the film's tone but are still much better than the series/films/series offshoot books--but the rest of Descendants is... what it is.

The first book had things like

They've been getting really sneaky with these sets recently.
It used to be that if there was only one doll in the box set the asking price would be $80. Even if it came with a few plastic accessories like the Minnie Mouse set in this image the price was still $80 because the box only include one doll. Only the box sets that crammed two dolls into one small box were priced at $129.99.

Heads up! I just spotted those new Star Wars dolls at my local TRU.

...They're shit.

Not only are they expensive with molded on clothes, but they have an ACTION GIMMICK. Squeeze their legs. Sabine raises her gun and Rey swings her Lightsaber. These dolls were in the regular SW section, so I just don't know who they are trying to sell these crappy dolls to.

Why do people insist on donating empty Animators Collection Mini Doll boxes to the Goodwill? I've seen like seven empty boxes in the last four months.

They don't even work as a good storage or lunch box since they open up very easily. This is one of the reasons Disney stores wraps each box with a plastic ribbon. Once you remove the ribbon the lid usually pops forwards.

As a doll collector I lurk these threads all the time but never buy any of the dolls. Why? Because for $100 to $150 I can get a doll with a nice sturdy posable body, gorgeous tailored clothes made of nice fabric and fantastic shoes and accessories all from integrity toys. The Disney dolls are so low quality by comparison and the bodies are just aborhhent. I collect dolls to display and photograph them and the Disney collector dolls aren't good for anything but leaving them MIB.

As a longterm doll collector I agree. I've stopped buying anything made by Mattel ever since Barbie Basics started using glue in the heads, and I've only bought Integrity Toys since then. IT has a few missteps but I actually feel like they know their target audience by giving us different display options (like extra hands, stain protection from clothes, etc) instead of shitting out a bowlegged body with shitty shimmery skin and bloated balloon heads.

If Mattel could stop shitting out so many mediocre dolls and focused on fewer lines and poured more resources into them they could stop bleeding money out every year.

So someone met the sculptor of the Hasbro Disney dolls at SDCC and he said that Hasbro literally squished his face molds so they'd fit in the packaging--rather than expand packaging by a few centimeters. Nice. That explains why they all look slightly fucking weird. Thanks, Hasbro! I feel bad for that sculptor.

I've honestly only gotten three of them. I own the Mermaid Ariel which comes with a seat, and ribbons last month because they've started to replace her in most stores with a cheaper version that comes with nothing more than the doll, and a few clips for the same price. The new one also has shorter hair.
I also used every trick in the book to get the Anna, and Elsa that have articulation in the wrists, and elbows for only $10.

It's really sad to hear that a company would be so cheap especially when they are trying to introduce their version of the Disney dolls for the very first time. You would think they would try to get things start off right by putting their best foot forward.

Update: Just saw them both in person at my local Disney Store, and I wont be wasting my money on Snow White. The one I saw in person is not as nice or as well put together as the one they put on display at D23. The bodice was crooked, half of her collar was sticking up instead of laying down, and her hair was a little messed up mainly do to the curls just sticking up in different directions.
Also I now see why the D23 Snow white was displayed without the box borders. With the boarders the doll kinda sinks into darkness, and she just doesn't shine as she does in the photos I've seen online.

The queen on the other hand looks wonderful in person. She has a dark box like the hag, but she lights up the room. I know I complained about the doll looking too simple, but in person it really didn't matter. If you put the Queen next to the LE Snow white she steals the show.

Here's a side by side comparison of the 12" Designer Snow White/Hag set from a few years back, and the new 17" D23 exclusive LE Snow White/Hag.

To tell the true I'd say the 12" version wins. The new hags outfit is so stylized that it's a little off putting, and there is something really wrong with her hood. It's just not the right shape.

Usually they tend to be higher right after the convention because everyone is hyped. They will probably be within a similar range in a few months, $150-300 depending on how many people get interested. They are Platinum so I wouldn't wait too long, and they seem to be a lot more popular than other recent Convention dolls.

Here's a fan made Ariel/King Triton set VS the official upcoming Disney store version. They used the old King Triton classic doll head, but at the moment I'm not sure who's body they used for him. His body does look way better than the lumpy body the Disney Store created for him. The Ariel doll is the Deluxe singing version with a fabric tale on top of the plastic tale.

Looks like Disney Store had plans to feature a boy playing with their new live action Belle doll on their website which would have been a first. I guess they chickened out at the last moment since they only used images of girls playing with her when the doll was released.

I think the quality is now so poor, and prices so high, there's just no reason to buy Barbie. Almost everything is $80-100 now, I hate to say it, but even a Bobobie would be a better buy for the money. I saw the recent "camel coat" Silkie in person a few weeks ago, the fuzzy fabric was all cheap and had bald spots NRFB.

I personally blame the eyes, the box, the shoes, the dress, the store, the truck driver that delivered her to the store, and the bar code on the back of her box for her low sales. I'm sure that her shelf warming to the point that they had to clearance out all the black Fashionist dolls for $1 has nothing to do with her being the black variant doll at all. I mean it's not like anything like this has ever happened before... oh.

It might also be because of the unflattering shelves she was sitting on.

Hasbro basic dolls retail for $9.99, which is the same retail that Mattel had in the end. I'd rather pay $9.99 for the Hasbro dolls than Mattel based on the quality of Mattel's dolls at the end. The DS basics are $16.95 each, technically, though now it's 2 for $22 if you buy more than one at a time.

I'd also go for the Hasbros, at least they have real clothes. The final cheap Mattel ones all had molded tops and messy face paint. Mattel says the cost of manufacturing has gone gone up, but Hasbro must own a time machine, because it hasn't ruined them.

I mostly like Mattel's Signature Collection that they released in their last, what, 2 years of having the license. They were massively overpriced for what they were (I waited until they clearanced out at $6 a pop) but they were a lot nicer than the standard dolls. Shame about the shiny face.

I don't know who came up with that shiny face gimmick, but it was truly cancer. I've never spoken to a doll collector who ever enjoyed those shiny faces, but every doll company thought it was going to be the hot new thing. Even Limited Edition Disney dolls got fucked over with the shiny face gimmick.

I woke up at 6AM this morning to get Snow White, and the Queen. I got to the mall two hours before the Disney Store opened, and there was already some lady there sitting on the floor. Technically I would have been second in line, but shes always brings a few family members along with her every year, so she can get multiple versions of the each doll. She swears shes not a scalper though. I was second in line, and about 14 people showed up after me. This girl who always talks to me every year, and claims to want to "hang out" came late, and walked right up to me 5mins before the store opened instead of getting in the back of the long line to talk, and "catch up". Cast members started handing out place holder cards for the dolls, and I noticed that she buddied up to me instead of getting in back of the line. After I got my card the Disney cast member turned to her thinking that she was with me, but she really wasn't. The person who was actually behind me didn't say anything to her as she took her spot in the line, and I didn't feel it was my place to say any thing since I see her every year, and I didn't want things to be awkward between us, but she totally cut in line. She asked for all three dolls.

I ended up getting Snow White, and the Evil Queen. Snow White looks cute as a button, while the Evil Queen looks amazing, and glamorous.

Reportedly, after the chubbier dolls were released, Barbie sales dropped yet another 17% in 2017.

And any seasoned buyer can see why.
