Ok, I want to grab a Chief but I'm curious if the standard McFarlane Halo 3 Chief is the way to go. I don't have an armor preference, I just want a shotgun and a pair of SMGs.

Halo 2: Master Chief Play Arts Kai Action Figure
Its like $90 though.

I always preferred the Joyride figures to the McFarlane ones. They were more playable to me.
>>

>>6415699
Came to post this. As unlikely as it sounds, the PAK is actually the best option out there for the classic Halo 2/3 Chief design. You'll get your SMGs, no Shotgun, but a pretty great Energy Sword. It's a splendid figure.

Reeks of Japanese influence. It's amazing how you can give modern day Japs anything and they'll find a way to fuck it up by shoving their culture and proportions on it instead of staying true to source material.

For the price of the PAK, you can get a better sculpted, better painted, Master Chief, who is probably as poseable as the PAK, plus a two Spartan buddies who come with the guns you want and two Covenant baddies for them to fight against.
>>
>>6416068
I totally agree, and I'm the guy you responded to! Late 3 and Reach era Halo McFarlane toys were spectacular, I still have quite a few. I also have the PAK though, and I personally think it's probably the best Chief toy ever made. Especially if you're into big, weighty toys. An S.H. Figuarts, though, that'd be the dream.

>McFarlane's Halo line
Nope.
Neither the plastic nor the sculpting was ever gummy.

People wish the plastic was gummy, since they kept on breaking pegs off certain figures with tini-tiny joints.
Overall, those figures were rare, since there were only 3 or 5 in the entire line that had that problem.... out of like over a hundred figures.

Seriously, you don't get detail like this anymore.
Three color tone eyes, requiring three seperate masks for the eyes alone, for something that's basically GI Joe scale. Only Hot Toys attempted to try something this well painted and detailed in 1:16 scale with their snap kits, and their first two attempts weren't even good.

The level 2 kit is 1/12 I think since it scales pretty close with my 1/144 gunpla. The level 3 is more like 1/100 (idk what that is in regular scale) keep in mind he's over 7 feet in armor. I highly prefer the level 2 kit as although the level 3 is larger, the detail on it is not as impressive. I even repainted it to be more of the hall 2 color scheme since I hate the new armor so damn much.

It makes general leg posability easier. The upper thigh armor collides with the hip and "butt" piece on the back. Pulling them down gives them better clearance.

Is there a decent community for buying/trading the McFarlane stuff somewhere or is eBay pretty much the go-to now?
>>

>Maybe not in articulation, as it was always top notch
top notch for McFarlane, and the majority of similarly priced figures? Certainly. But it definitely needs improvement, which the Halo 2 Master Chief he released fixed in a few areas like the ability to more properly kneel and fire, but then suffered limited elbow range.

You win some, you loose some with McFarlane when it comes to articulation. But at least the articulation was adequate enough and able to pull off most of what you need them to do. Unlike the last couple waves where I just couldn't be bothered to find even one pose that looked good.

>top notch for McFarlane, and the majority of similarly priced figures? Certainly. But it definitely needs improvement
Every single line needs improvement, but McFarlane's Halo line is one of the highest articulated toys there are. See pic on how high this figure can kick, which is more than many Figuarts/Figmas/Revoltechs/NECAs/MLs/etc.
Of course, other lines and certain figures can do other things better, but that's my point. Everything can be improved, but this line had a shit load of articulation.

McFarlane wasn't even trying to do the most articulated line anyway. They even undersold it by saying these figures have like 15PoA, despite having over 30PoA (they actually meant 15 jointed areas). McFarlane for this time, and others, sought to balance sculpt and articulation, and there are very few lines that gave you this much bang for your buck.

I already compared it to Hot Toys snap kits, where they painted everything as it should have been, which is a TON of value when you account the sculpt and articulation as well.

Shit like this is only possible when it's done by a privately owned company by an extremely eccentric owner who likes toys.
>>
>>6442839
I always thought McF figures had a lot of useless articulation and not enough range where it matters (particularly knees and elbows). The preservation of the sculpt took precedence over everything else with almost every aspect of their figures. Really great sculpts and paint apps too, but I'd almost prefer a statue if the only natural-looking poses I can get are 10 variations of standing.

None of McFarlane's articulation was useless though.
Yes, it can be pretty limited at times, but despite that, it was still pretty poseable. It's not all or nothings.
It's like a car that can go 120mph max vs one that goes 65mph max. They both still get you to where you need to go, one is just more fun to drive.
So don't act like it's some shitty 80s or 90s toy with t-crotched swivel hips.

You'd have a point if you were complaining about their current figures where they can't really spread their legs much, but their old Halo stuff? That's high grade homeless man nutter nonsense.

I was just giving my two cents, guy, they're good figures, and pretty great at the $12-$20 price point they sat at, but not without kinks. Mostly referring to their Halo 3 figures, which I've had the most experience with. They all had like 3 swivel joints at the hip, but wouldn't allow an angle narrower than 100° at the elbow to properly shoulder a gun. Skipped the Reach and 4 lines because I didn't really like the designs all that much, but it seems like they only got marginally better as they went. Pic related is the only Halo McFarlane I've gotten in a while, H2A Chief. Notice how the sculpt and paint are slick as hell, but the arms are out as far as they can spread, forearms are as far inward as they can go (around 60° range for either). No more exploding hips, but he can't look up, can't do the cover pose, and still has to hold an assault rifle outward from his body to grip it with both hands. Almost everything above the ab crunch feels incredibly lacking. Maybe this figure is an outlier, or maybe the Reach line was better off, or maybe it doesn't bother you like it does me, but I'm not trying to be a crackpot or snob or whatever, anon. I just think, regarding a toyline based on a series that has a lot of focus on guns, the toys should be able to simulate how they're used in the source material, and the arbitrary limitations that have consistently shown up in this toyline hinder that.
>>
>>6443756
>they're good figures, and pretty great at the $12-$20 price point they sat at
I really hate statements like this, especially the way you're using it, because it implies that cutting away the sculpt and giving figures weird proportions to be more poseable costs more money to produce.
It doesn't.
What costs money are how many pieces the figure is made out of, how it's assembled, the amount of paint apps that are used, how they're applied and general QC (plus type of plastic used).
The range of motion has no real cost, because that's the same step taken when its being sculpted and the joints/articulation being laid out. There is no extra step that adds to the cost.

So for actual costs, McFarlane put in a shit ton of value in their 2008-2012 toys. There really are no other toys that really matched his output except for statueshit, Hot Toys (their dolls and snap kits), 3a (and i guess Mezco with their One:12 line), and PAKs (only their paint, but they had some really really shit applications, but that was still expensive).

The vast majority of toys priced over what you see in retail are hugely overpriced. The diminishing returns for imports (Japanese/HK/Chinese) and high end brands like 3a and Mezco's stuff is crazy high, since feature per feature the costs do not add up. They charge a premium because they can and thats the only reason their figures cost so much.

And i dont disagree with a lot you said. i know how limited the figures are, but to call them useless like you did? You might as well be telling me you're a veteran from vietnam and need money to fight the aliens.
>>
>>6443756
