Aquazone ruled. I got the big Aquashark set for my ninth birthday. It was the biggest LEGO set I'd ever had at that point. I only had the little one-man scout sub for the Aquanauts, so he was always outnumbered and outgunned by the 'Sharks, but I was a horrible child who always preferred the bad guys so that was fine with me.

These guys get it. The 70's-90's space themes have such a cool retro sci fi feel to them I just love. I would love to buy some sets of them but they're probably expensive nowadays, only a few of my minifigures remain.

One time my mom was grocery shopping and this was on super sale. She was going to buy it for me but didn't know if I would like it. Shit broke my heart. Everybody keeps making this point, but I can never decide if it's just a rose-colored glasses thing, or if you're only saying that because of the box-art and low-poly look your get from not having very many colors.

Lego probably makes the same number of specialized parts now that they do then, just different. But they've introduced them in dozens of new colors.

In 1980 there were <20 colors. Now there are over 60 that are STILL in production, not including ones whose whole lifetime was between now and 1980. (there's about 30-40 of those...)

There was a higher reliance on imagination, you couldn't count on weird shaping with different colors to do the thinking for you. That gave it a more wholesome feel, a more cell-shaded look, I think (less blending)

But that's just me.
>>
>>6416065
It's the simple but competent design of them.

They aren't filled with Technic stuff for action functions, don't have bazillions of flickfire missiles or stud shooters on them or any overdesigned intricate assemblies that could drive up the price.
They also tickle your imagination more since often it's left up to you to come up with what all the shit on them is (kinda like in old as hell video games).
Are those antennae on the Ice Planet cruiser lasers or sensors?
Are those black tubes on the sides of the cockpits engines or cannons?
Does that satellite in the middle dub as a giant mean gun?
Meanwhile, with stud shooters it's always clear: "yeah, it shoots - that's a gun alright."

I've been looking at this question for a while and it's essentially 3 aesthetical points that old 90s-2000 sets did differently than modern sets. Colors, flat edges, and minimalist faces/prints.

As you said, there was a significantly smaller assortment of colors to choose from. There were less in-between shades so at least to me, the contrast gives the sets a little more vibrancy. Then with the edges, Lego has been loving making smoothed rounded parts which, imho, is much less appealing stylistically then what we had before. Older sets were definitely inferior in terms of raw engineering, but goddamn do I miss shit like the old airport glass panels and the octagonal "domes" from the Aquazone lines. And then lastly, with the prints, I know the 2000s were a hot mess of a bunch of preliminary styles of faces before they got to their current look, but to me, the old solid black eyes without highlights look so much better. Not to mention back in the 80s and 90s, everyone was fucking smiling. There were distinct bad guys and good guys yeah, but Lego gave the sets an extra layer of innocence and fun when literally every minifigure had a big wide smile on their face. Even ghosts and skeletons looked happy. Now every bad guy has to look evil and grumpy and idk, but the lack of extra detail and the ambiguity amongst the faces was better in my eyes. Aquazone is a solid example of all the points I'm discussing and it's a prime example as to where I think Lego went wrong. Even something like UFO with their flat faced saucers I still prefer over something out of any modern alien line with smoothed rounded parts.
>>
>>6416314
>>6416297
I think most of the changes that Lego has made since the 90s have been reactionary. The rest of the toy-making industry has been finding it easier and easier to cram action features into their toys. They can include details at greater degrees than they used to. And so in order to stay competitive in a child's limited attention span, they need to jam pack each set full of play features, colors, details, etc.
>>
>>6412295
>I would love to buy some sets of them but they're probably expensive nowadays, only a few of my minifigures remain.
Check Bricklink, they're all pretty cheap.

They're above all inspiring and imagination provoking and really emphasized the fact you were working with a "system" not just a normal toy. Almost any older lego set looks great on display because it just looks impressive. As the other anon said it's simple yet competent. The older themes also didn't require copious amounts of autism and specialized parts to make more things in the same style of a theme so you could build something impressive and satisfying rather quickly with minimal parts without the countless infinitesimal parts in countless different color shades that almost make the notion of building something a chore and overwhelming to plan out.

Also older minifigures followed a great minimalist art direction that blended well across all themes and allowed body parts to easily be switched around to make different characters without looking out of place. A great example of this is star wars characters. The old ones had simple yet instantly recognizable features that had a distinct charm while new ones get so minute and complex with their detail that they might as well just start printing photographed textures on them.

another example is recently I got a little $4 polybag while in line at target and was actually dumbfounded at how unbelievably ugly this figure was. In person you can hardly even see the black printing on the dark blue torso and all the random lines and details just look so shitty on such a small thing.

I prefer the unmasked version, but I don't see anything wrong with his torso

>>
>>6416392
they started to make more realistic designs to match the standards of other toys. LEGO faced a major crisis back in early 2000s. That was a starting point for their more specialized designs for licensed sets. Kids these days want something else, they don't feel content with the freedom to build anything they want out of a set, most of them just want a screen-accurate product to swoosh around while they're not playing (equally realistic) videogames.

Would be nice if they kept a few SW sets in the market with this classic minifigure design. Something similar to what they do with minimalist figures in Modular sets.

>>
>>6416502
I understand and I don't blame lego for anything I was just stating why some other people who liked lego in its earlier decades don't like it anymore. Its lost its magic when it favored "realism" over its original iconic simplicity. My favorite themes of all time happened during some of Legos worst selling years.

>>

seems like a lot of toys have gotten "dumbed down" I remember when Transformers came with a 20+ page instruction book and if you lost it you were fucked. My sister is a pre-school teacher and she's talked about how it's noticeable how kids every year seem to be able to imagine less and less
>>
>>6418632
Yeah, sadly I was too young back then to take advantage of all those cool sets, but I still look back on them and fantasize. New Lego kinda lost the charm imo.

I should check if any psychologists are writing about any negative effects of kids growing up with internet access--if that's what is partially causing the lack of imagination. It makes sense; when I was a kid you had to go to the library to find things out, or maybe you had a home encyclopedia set. In the meantime you'd wonder and imagine about how and why things work. Now 5 seconds on Google will explain everything in full detail, with an almost information overload. Their curiosity is immediately satisfied.

I read an article about college students with cell phones in recent years not learning to be as independent as pre-phone era students. Cell phones mean they rarely have to solve a problem on their own, or make independent decisions. Parents are only a phone call away, so it's like they never left home.

Anybody grow up with the Classic Space sets? You've all posted some neat sets here that I haven't seen, it's kinda tempting to unpack the old Space stuff and put it together (and see how many pieces are missing).
>>
>>6416565
My family wasn't poor-poor, just maybe-not-this-month-the-water-bill-was-too-high, but I had a very similar Christmas one year... Such good feelings...
>>
>>6418659
Yeah but it's not been "dumbed down" in a steady decline since you were a kid. It was pretty much a reaction to the sudden change in the market that happened around the time of the major plastic price hike. Transformers for example peaked in complexity only a few years ago, during the ROTF line.
>>
>>6425482
They haven't done that yet but they have done studies about a related problem called "juvenoia". You'd be really interested in that, I think.
>>
>>6425580
Kids are getting Juvenoia from cell phones!? Won't someone think of the children!
>>
>>6416779
Still one of my favs to this day. Was such a fun build with many features.
>>
>>6425580
After reading a Time article on juvenoia, I'm not sure I really see the connection. The concern is that children might be becoming less imaginative, not more wild and out of control. There are other valid concerns, like NY state eliminating literacy tests as discriminatory because black and hispanic candidates could not pass them. Also "teaching to the test" pitfalls of No Child Left Behind and Common Core. And are kids on social media sites? Those might encourage conformity or rigid thinking to gain peer acceptance.

Suppose I'd rather have parents concerned about influences on their young, rather than getting lulled into a "don't worry, your children will be fiiiiiine...." mentality.
