Post your custom projects here; mods, fixes, repaints, dios, effects parts, accessories, 3D printed stuff, or whatever else you're working on.

Offer tips and advice, ask for help, post tutorials/guides, and have fun!
>>
Here's some tips from the previous threads:

Beginners: practice on cheap figures first.

For sculpting on figures: use 2-part epoxy putty like Aves apoxie or fixit.

For tools: try a basic carving/sculpting set like the kind arts & crafts stores have, and calipers for symmetry.
Dental tools have also been said to work well.
Also, using a Dremel is recommended. Minimites (the small $20-25 ones) are fine for starting out, but the battery life is poor. Upgrade to a corded one only if you want to get deeper into customizing. They are useful for stuff outside of the hobby though, so it's a good investment regardless.

For paints: use acrylics. Paint in multiple, thin coats. Brands like Vallejo/P3/Citadel are recommended, because of pigment quality.

Use a sealer when finished to protect your work. There are matte varieties and sealers that give a glossy look. As with painting, use multiple thin coats.

A flex shaft attachment on a Dremel is a godsend and relatively inexpensive. The grinding shield is also pretty useful, but you can improvise one using a cut open soda bottle.

Massive QC issues right out of the box - broken knee joint, one of the pouches off the belt, knee pads fell off at a slight breeze, tons of paint issues...

Decided I'm going to weather up the baton and shield too, will do that as soon as I get some more topcoat.

Thanks anon. About clamping, what sort of clamp should I be using? Is there one I can get to place on my desk, or should I just use a standard C-clamp and hang my pieces off the edge of my desk so I can clamp them that way?

I always keep lots of spare blades on-hand, so that hopefully shouldn't be a problem.

Guess I'll have to go find a sanding block now. I don't think I've ever seen them for sale but I'll look regardless, unless it's better to just make my own (though I feel like it'd be better to get a pre-made one if I can).

Guy making a headmaster with literal play-doh here. I asked about the castilene and the guys selling it confirmed it wouldn't keep its form if heated close to 80ÂșC.

I still have to get the oyumaru to test how cold it can get while malleable but in the meantime I have no clue as for what kind of material can I get to sculpt a prototype other than epoxy.
Any suggestions?

Also, if anyone owns both TR Skullcruncher and TR Triggerhappy, could you measure how tall and wide their faceplates are? I don't have Triggerhappy yet but looking at it, it has a similar shape to the BW Megatron I'm "making" so making a copy of the faceplate and modifying it might be a good shortcut.

>>6393000
Regular C-clamps will work if you have them, a quick clamp is faster. Though, you might be able to use some binder clips or even strong clothespins. If the styrene sheets don't need to be smooth, lightly sand the surface and if your metal ruler has some cork backing, it should slip less.

For a sanding block you can just use a piece of wood that fits in your hand and grip the sandpaper in place with your fingers.

I'm wanting to make a david bowie "Thin White Duke" era custom figure.... but I can't think of any good headsculpts that have a bowie likeness.

I'm yet to be familiar with every material so I have no clue which modelling clay would that be; when I search for it on google I get plasticine and earth-based clay. Can you point me to a brand?

>super sculpy or fimo?
I've found super sculpey. I just need something that cures more slowly than epoxy.
I have some cold porcelain at hand, though, but it's winter and humidity is insanely high here so it will take ages to cure.

>>6394749
Millimeters would be fine. I have no idea what could possess anyone to use anything but international for length.
>>
>>6395660
Different anon. Get plasticine. It doesn't cure (warmer temperatures soften while chilling it will make it stiff).

>>I have no idea what could possess anyone to use anything but international for length.

Freedom, that's what. j/k
>>
>>6394538
It does, but it all depends on thickness/joint construction. It's called strong and flexible because its more likely to bend or compress before it breaks.

I've got two entire figures from the material, when done correctly tolerance is fine. just avoid long/thin construction.
>>
>>6395996
On paper it has the properties of slightly below average ABS. Really not bad at all. But I'm worried that since it's powder bound together I'm wondering if it'll wear away quicker.

Making a 1/12 scale diorama - two story room where the top floor has a trap door leading down into a torture basement. But I'm really stuck on what to do for the flooring and walls on the basement.

I got the embossed dolomite stone walls from miniatures.com and I like how those look, but I'm completely stuck on the floor. Part of my things using quickrete to make a concrete floor would be good, but I think that's a bit... plain? I could put in some drains, but I'm not confident with my ability to add in gutters as well, so it would look pretty unfinished. Tiles might be good, but then I think those would clash with the stone walls, so I'd need to change those. Stone floors with the stone walls just doesn't feel right.

For reference, the top floor is pretty much this, but with a trap door.

Maybe try making a mold of the of the shape the pieces will take after fusing them using a material that won't react so you have a frame to keep it together while applying the cement?
And use a cement with acetone, I don't have it at hand but an anon recommended me one that is usually sold on amazon.
>>
>>6401690
>>6401917
I agree no glue bond can last, but if this is the best path for you try pinning. drill a hole in both rods, connect them with a piece of paperclip, glue it and then lightly use acetone (with a cotton ball or something) to fuse the gap where the two rods meet. that way there is something resisting the break inside.

I have the Perceptor and I can get the Triggerhappy anytime but Skytread is going to cost me like 15 dollars only to get access to the headsculpt; there's also how I have zero interest in Skytread and the point of this was to avoid expending extra on the crappy TR Galvatron.

Pic related? It's a figure/base sculpt i got commissioned from a friend, but I helped pick out some of the jointing for it.
You need to think outside the box a little. You can't just print a revojoint or shf joint. remember print orientation, you can print flat rings and pins for joints or ball and sockets but either the ball or socket needs to be designed somewhat differently from an injection mold. I've had a lot of success, for example, doing hinge joints as 'C' shape rings where a peg would clip into the C making it slightly expand and then contract.

Damn looks good but this is how I'm currently doing my next protos. Thought you were talking about ball joints/ratchet joints which cannot be 3D printed very well due to the way layering works. >Would it be cheaper to make a 3d model on a computer and send it to a 3d printing farm, or buy some clay and tools and make stuff by hand?
>I'd like to be able to easily make copies as well

I think you can figure out for yourself which is the cheaper option, I think we literally don't need to answer this for you
>>
>>6404330
Obviously by hand is cheaper, but you'll probably have to practice and use both in the end if you want anything decent. Even if you get something 3D printed, you're gonna have to work by hand to sand and sculpt out details. However 3D printing a model will likely give you better results than doing something by hand unless you are a master sculptor already.

Whichever method you use, once you have the first figure nice and polished, you could make a mold for each part and make copies to put together.

Some anon recommended me this thing to fix factory plastic; sadly, I couldn't get it because of the assbackwards policies imposed by my country's customs but if you're in the US you could give it a try for the price it goes for.

Using apoxie sculpt for the first time for a...semi toy related project I guess. Any of you guys have tips for dissolving it to clean off tools? Does alcohol or acetone disolve it like sculpey?

So, if some of you are from the BST thread, you might have seem what happened to my Kyle Rather figure. Only thing salvageable was the head and accessories.

In the mean time I was looking for ways I could customize this and came up with 2 options.

1) DCAU Kyle:
Using a DCUC John Stewart figure, I could pop his head off and replace it. Only problem would be the hands, which I could just paint black and voila, a Kyle Rayner from the Superman Animated Series.

2) White Lantern Kyle:
Pop the head onto white lantern Hal's body, paint the mask silver/white.

Both options sound cool, but I'm leaning toward the first.
>>
>>6406735
Yeah poor Rayner got manhandled pretty hard in transit. To be honest I think the white lantern kyle sounds pretty sick.
>>
>>6406735
Yeah that was awful. I was actually going to buy it myself, but not in the US so shipping costs were ass.

If I were to only do one, I'd go with green since it's my fav color. However, maybe you could try making a mold of the head to make a copy and have both.
>>
>>6404026
Anyone?
I'm leaning towards clear, red, or green based on how the details come out on those colors figures I own cast in those colors.

I got this 18inch jacks paific ep 7 storm trooper for like 5 bucks.

Its basically a statue and the arm joints dont bend. I was thinking of using it as a display piece or something and cut off the arms so i can repose it.

Question is how do i glue it back together
I was thinking of epoxy but i would need alot as the arms are thick and i dont think it would be strong enough

Impulse bought this kit on GK-m. Any good metallic paints for resin, or should I just paint whatever color and use a gloss coat?
>>
>>6408355
I don't think there's any specific paints for resin, just prime it and then use whatever paints you have.
>>
>>6408438
Any good metallic paints you can recommend? I bet those wings would look pretty good with a bit of sparkle. I mostly just use vallejo shit since it's so easy to get a hold of.
>>
>>6408462
Vallejo is a good brand. If you're good with an airbrush and really know what you're doing you could dabble with lacquers, Alclad II is supposed to be very good in particular. It gets a better finish than acrylics (Alclad is super-reflective) but it's quite caustic and can be a pain to work with.

You can also get pre-mixed metallic colours (acrylics AFAIK) that are supposed to be good if you don't like the idea of clearcoating silver but I can't remember the name for the life of me.
>>
>>6408468
I'll look a bit more. I'm nervous about working with lacquer and enamel since I have so many pets. Rats especially have very sensitive respiratory systems. Knowing that there's some options out there is a good start though, thanks.

And I could always just go with a different color scheme if I can't get any convincing metallic finish.

So I have this 30in soft plastic shark from TRU I want to add articulation too. My plan was to cut it into sections and then re-attach sections using a wireframe or ball-sockets sold at Hobby Lobby for traditional doll-making.

The problem is that this shark toy in inflated with some foam inside for minor support. The moment there is a puncture it'll lose its shape. Is there a spray that I could apply to the body in enough layers that will make it retain its shape (applied before cutting it)?

I have this Arms Micron Zori guy and I want to turn it into Razorsharp but I don't really want to be cutting through the plastic. It's a pretty nice plastic.

Is there any way to make the clips on the arm joints more durable if I make plastic copies of the body with epoxy? I have some runners in case I need to use extra plastic for rods but no idea if there's any way to recreate or strengthen the clips. I've heard epoxy doesn't take pressure all that well.

Maybe if you used pure epoxy glue. The putty form has additives to make it harder but more brittle. That design requires the plastic to flex for assembly so epoxy putty is no-go.

No, a conventional thermoplastic like ABS or PS, which is probably what it's made of already, is far stronger than anything short of industrial-grade polyurethane resins

WIP A2 from Nier: Automata

I made two variants, the first using a Figuarts Body-chan china knockoff from AliExpress. Quality of the bootleg is actually very good and was easy to work with but the actual sculpt was a bit too anime, the proportions don't translate over very well. Was my first attempt at a custom and I made the skin tone a bit too desaturated.

Not pictured: I made her dress thing and it kind off fits but the cut was not precise enough for my liking, working on getting the cuttings right and cutting the fabric using a laser cutter, cutting intricate patterns on shear fabrics by hand is really difficult :(

a2_2.jpg
676KB, 963x963px
The second one is using a bootleg Figma She: Next. This was an absolute pain in the ass to work with, the proportions were mostly decent but the bootleg quality was disastrous. The neck looks really fat as well for some reason. I made this one afterwards so managed to fix up the skin tone and also the better proportions allowed me to match the detailing a bit better.

The chest piece was also made of this flexible rubber which made paint application a real problem. The primer was prone to flaking off as the part flexed and there are multiple tiny stress lines due to the flex giving the paint an uneven appearance compared to the matte application on the harder plastic parts.

This was my first attempt to sculpt hair as well, ended up being very difficult and the results were not the best.

QQ, Whats the best way to avoid paint chipping at the joints?

cross hatch your layers, so if you paint one up and down paint the next side to side
make sure it's dry before you do the next layer, hit it with a hairdryer if you have to, that's probably most of why you have lumps there

I roped my husband into sculpting Ironwood from trash "anime" RWBY, and we'll be casting it in resin and adding Hobby Base joints.

This is the first time we'll be pursuing a GK with this sort of tooling, and I'm worried it won't work out. Does anyone have any experience with plastic joints in resin kits they could give me some info on? What's the best way to make a bow like this? I'm thinking 1mm styrene rod with a heat gun and literally tying it once it's hot enough to manipulate, maybe? It'd be a nightmare to sand using apoxie.

Other than that, I'd like to recast it. Making mold out of soft goods seems like a nightmare. Am I wrong there? Would using actual tread be easier after all?
>>
>>6420060
You could make one out of polymer clay then cast the mold.
>>
>>6420060
all depends what kind of surface its going on

If its going to jut off the figure dont bother. if its adhering to a surface you could use thread and glue/epoxy/ mod podge hard coat it into place.
>>
I figure I would ask this in the Customs General, but will boiling water strip off acrylic paint? I recently got a custom head commissioned and it sits high on the head. I usually use hot water to make factory heads sit flush on other bodies. I was worried, so I didn't try. Thanks!
>>
>>6420104
>>6420105
I'm trying to make those amputee stump covers at 1/12 scale. Apoxie's my first instinct, but my gut's telling me that I won't be able to sculpt a convincing knot at that scale and either way, sanding will be a bitch. My second is to melt a styrene rod and literally tie it like that, but I'm not sure if that'll even work. And the third option is to make a knot using some thick thread, but that'd be hard to recast.

If I tie a knot with, say, embroidery floss, and then spray a coat or two of topcoat on it, would that stiffen it up another to stand up to a mold?

I really doubt you could make a sturdy enough bow by coating embroidery floss. 1mm leather cord MIGHT work, but I think you're best off sculpting something. This doesn't apply to any future copies, but for an original polymer clay piece, you can smooth unbaked clay with a brush dipped in rubbing alcohol.

Just sculpt a tiiiny knot onto the thing but have it adhere to the curvature of your piece.

What's really getting me is the cost of shipping. When there's a seller who's got a part that goes over maybe $15-$20 and they want $10 shipping when it weighs 1 oz and will ship just fine in a bubble mailer, I can't bring myself to buy it. but if I were to find someone who'd be willing to split the cost of a full figure to part out between us, that's another story. The jackets and bags are what I'm really after, and maybe a couple of heads and feet.

This is everything that I've got going at the moment. I still need to make a new socket for Luke's head and reshape the Star Wars hands that I've chopped up. After that is working out some sort of Jedi/Sith robes for the blind guy and figuring out what I want to do with the Zomb jumpsuit. Eventually what I'd like to do with one of these bodies is stitch together a suit for a custom Invincible, but the sewing is hard going since I only get about 4 hours free time a week and by that point I'm totally spent. I've also got a couple of bootleg Body-kuns that I'd like to turn into Madman and Mr. Miracle. But again, it's all so time-consuming that I've got to think of it as a long-term project.
>>
>>6442313
Weezing is game accurate bump wise. I honestly thought the same thing though. still contemplating making him more lumpy. Arbok's teeth are scaled up so they can be filed down. One tooth broke though which I actually didn't notice until you pointed it out. Luckily though that's the part his tongue will cover which is not pictured.

When sewing with really small seam allowance, using an edge-stitch presser foot can make a big difference.

A straight stitch needle plate will keep your fabric from getting eaten up by the feed dogs. Just be sure to switch it out for a standard one when you need a zigzag stitch, or you'll break your needle.

Putting a piece of tissue paper under the fabric can prevent bunching, puckers, and being eaten by the feed dogs as well. You can tear it away when you finish the seam.

>>

I am an Aves Apoxie user usually. Greenstuff is harder to work with due to its sticky nature, but metal tools with water and a little practice make it very manageable..I found waiting 25 minutes after you mix it makes it less prone to sticking when you don't want it to. The reason to use greenstuff/kneadatite is it almost rubbery in consistency, it has flex and give when it sets. I can make straps that bend and wrap and won't deform, or sculpting long hair.. I have not used milliput like the other anon, though I'd like to try it. The hardcore Japanese customizers I've seen on youtube seem to use a combo of all 3.

Not him but it's just a clear epoxy resin apparently. They just thinned it down
>>
>>6442249
Amazing!
>>
>>6453071
Yeah viscosity and losing detail easily is what worries me. I've been doing really great with thinned mod podge hard coat which is basically PVA glue. easy to wet sand in case of over-application and dries hard, sealed up with a spray coat of primer or clear finish.
>>
>>6453053
If your an idiot who doesn't know how to mix or brush correctly then it is. Use weight and not volume for best results. IMO wait 24 instead of 4 hours prior to sanding as well and stick to medium and fine grits and files instead of heavy grit sponges. Any issue I have had has been user error.
>>
>>6453167
Isn't PVA glue really soft and easy to damage? You can have something soft that's easy to sand as long as it's not gummy, not quite the same thing.
>>
>>6453167
Oh, by the way. Have you ever mixed modge podge with paint to paint flexible parts?
>>
>>6453792
I've done it by accident, lol. mod podge mixture is very similar to acrylic paint, so you mix them and they dry together, figured that out handpainting.

You should try it out, and clear coat it obviously to eliminate tackiness. good thing is any paint stripping method will be able to get it off of flexible parts should you fuck up.

>>6453789
It's not much of an issue if you do thin layers(even with the normal variant), once it dries out completely its tough. And even tougher with any acrylic sealer or primer over it.
Hence why i bought hard coat- just seems to be tougher somehow. since its just filling the pores and smoothing the rough surface it works (especially for shapeways WSF)- its no epoxy substitute, I use two part putty if i have to add any features. and I DEFINITELY wouldnt use mod podge on injection-molded figures.

its not about the finish itself being soft or hard, another good thing about the podge is wet sanding softens the top layer so that you can smooth the excess off some surfaces and smear it to level other areas of the surface. it loses that property once you primer or clear coat it tho.
>>
>>6453951
>You should try it out, and clear coat it obviously to eliminate tackiness. good thing is any paint stripping method will be able to get it off of flexible parts should you fuck up.
Wouldn't the clear coat break off of a flexible part?

>rough surfaces like WSF have a porous bite that takes mod podge well. injection molded stuff on the other hand especially POM are not gonna take that shit
Isn't mod podge naturally adhesive? And have you tried sanding and treat the surface with a solvent, like lacquer thinner?

My plan is to digitally sculpts heads and possibly hands in something like Blender then getting them printed using a 3d printer.
My plan is to then paint and connect them to a body that i can buy off of Ebay or something, so I can have a fully articulated custom figure.

Problem is I'm super new to all this stuff.
Is Blender the best program to use?

>zbrush
>expensive

whoa buddy, don't ever look at the price of Max or Maya or Solid Works or whatever the fuck else if you think ZBrush is pricey
>>
>>6455525
Solidworks is for cad. Maya and c4d have amateur monthly subscription versions that have almost all the features unlike a brush core, and you can just it for the months you actually want to work on a custom toy. And blender is just straight up free and for conventional polygonal modeling nearly as functional as the likes of max and maya
>>
>>6455555
the dumbest pentapost I've ever read, yeah, nobody said solid works was a fucking sculpting program, and a few months of maya or max and you'll be paying the cost to own zbrush
>>
>>6455686
You clearly did say it's a sculpting tool. Otherwise you wouldn't have compared an engineers tool with precision up the wazoo to a purely art tool with no precision to speak of used in a completely different industry. Likewise for max, which is an architectural tool from the horses mouth. Zbrush is good at sculpting but offers like a quarter of the things either max or Maya can do.

Btw

Modo indie, 60 bucks for 6 months. Maya lt 30 bucks a month. Will do anything you could need from full Maya short of film industry standard rendering.

Or even 3dcoat, which has a nearly fully functional hobby license for $100 bucks, and the full version is still half the cost of zbrush. It's not as robust as zbrush but yea, it makes zbrush expensive when your competitor is half the price and does most of the things you do.

If you knew what you were talking about you wouldn't be suddenly talking about a parametric design tool or full versions of programs that can carry a film production to completion almost entirely on their own. Meanwhile zbrush is just really good at sculpting and has a solid competitor for half the price

What tools does everyone use to cute thick styrene? I have some 1/4 inch styrene sheets I need to shape. At first I tried a dremel with the metal cutoff discs, but those obviously weren't the right choice. The carbide cutter works really well, but ends up with a chunk of melted and re-hardened plastic at the end that you have to cut off with an x-acto knife and that's annoying. And the grinding stone works pretty well, but struggled with removing lots of mass compared to the carbide cutter. How well does the saw attachment work on styrene?

Yes, but be sure to:

1. spray it with primer first, especially if you're putting a light color over a dark color
2. thin the paint with water to the consistency of milk
3. you want to paint several thin, smooth coats, allowing for drying time in between. don't try to do it all in one shot, it will look thick and lumpy and horrible.
4. seal it with topcoat after.

Thanks, the FAG parts are just about done. They just require a bit of cleanup, which is tough with the detail. I'm trying to recast the shackles/cuffs now, but I have a feeling the two different perpendicular holes will make that a nightmare, so I have a bad feeling about that.
