Is it better to build the FAG first and then paint or paint the parts first and then build?
>>
>>6390710
I think it's usually easiest to paint, then build.
>>
>>6390710
Build certain parts/limbs and paint them before assembly, and certain more fiddly bits should be individually painted.

I'm honestly thinking about cancelling my Gourai-Kai BD order. I'm kind of sad that the "kai" part of her is in reference to the anime, and not in reference to any particular engineering improvements, and the anime isn't doing as much for me as I was hoping. New armor is great, but that can be made custom if I was desperate enough.
>>
>>6391243
Pretty much this. The anime is great, but I'm not paying $100+ for the same Gourai with some extra parts slapped on. I wouldn't even have hesitated if they improved her design of course. I'd still buy a Gourai Kai if they made it available for cheaper and apart from the BD though.
>>

Busou Shinki were a line of mecha musume action figures produced by Konami and featuring various designers and gimmicks. There was a video game that went with the figures, allowing you to scan codes from the figures you owned and use them in a Gundam Breaker-esque game that presented them as tiny AI-controlled robot girls. The line was cancelled around the end of 2012, right after airing an anime that used the same general setting as the game.

Since then, several successor lines have sprung up, mostly as model kits rather than preassembled figures like Shinkis were. The most popular of these is the Frame Arms Girls by Kotobukiya, based off their Frame Arms lines of customizable mecha kits. Several other lines exist, such as Megami Device, also by Kotobukiya but featuring original designs in more similar fashion to Shinkis, and Desktop Army, a chibi-style line of preassembled figures by Mega House that usually come in packs of six. Frame Arms Girl just finished airing an anime of its own that had a similar setting to that of Busou Shinki.

All of them are cute and will destroy your wallet. Run while you still can.

It's worth noting that the Dendrobium's price can be chopped by 13,920 yen by getting four Blitz Gunners and a Movable Crawler instead of Powered Guardians. This has the bonus of making it look more like the Dendrobium too.

Sadly I can't help you with the exact colors, but if you are painting all the skin parts I don't think it would be necessary for you to get exactly the original color, I would recommend getting one you like and stick to it. That said yellowish is always better.
>>
>>6391243
I was very much hoping that Gourai-Kai is basically the BD1 Inno-Gourai with armor, but oh well. I guess I should just get the Inno-Gourai at some point, slap on the old armor and call her "Kai".

>>6391793
I have vague future ideas of human niece/cousin getting to experience being a robot girl in the future, but we're still at least a chapter or two off from introducing her.

As far as the question of what kind of tiny robot girl we're following, I think I'm leaning towards her being an Innocentia if she's a FAG. I'm open to suggestions for what she'd be if she's a Shinki or Megami instead.
>>
>>6391949
Why is Inno the biggest slut among FAGs?
I think it should be somebody who can fly by defaut, since flying was mentioned in the story.
>>
>>6391953
I figured I'd just give her an MSG flight pack, though I suppose she could be a Stylet or Baselard. Hresvelgr's a maybe: I was going to use one as another character in this chapter, though I suppose I could change her to something else without any real issue.
>>
>>6391843

>>
>>6391992
Spare parts. Just for testing purpose
>>
>>6391843
Yeah. Don't paint the fleshtone parts. Just take care of the seamlines, topcoat it with matte clear, and then use some peach weathering powder (tamiya weathering master H) to add definition, and then topcoat again to seal it in. Looks remarkably good.

>>
>>6392027
Those are chalk pastels, scrape off what's needed with a knife into a palette and apply with a brush. Go Google "chalk pastel weathering" if still not sure.
>>
>>6391994
Ah I dig.

Do all the kits come with spare parts like that?
>>
Is the SOL Hornet torso compatible with FAGs?
>>
>>6392044
Most do, except for Gourai. It's cheaper for them to keep making the same runners even if the kit only needs one piece off of it, so there's a lot of spare parts left over, but it's rarely anything useful. Normally it's just the leftover parts that they stopped using after the first wave, like gourai-style thighs and upper arms, and a few polycaps. Only hobby baselard comes with a significant number of spare parts.

>>6392058
Probably not without modification. MD are smaller then FAGs.

You don't paint them on the runner. Most FAGs come with spare parts: the first few, for instance, tried to push that you could display them with one static "undressed" leg and arm, which nobody does. Since those parts come with some spare flesh tone pieces on their own runner, you can use them to test what paints will look like when applied to the plastic.

You snap them off the runners, preferably using nippers and a hobby knife, then sand and paint if you want, then assemble. Then you buy an accessory kit, and another, and another, until they fill up all the space in your display closet but you want the new one that's coming out and ohmigosh there's a bike and it comes in two colors and if you had these and those parts you could make a Ride Crosser and suddenly all of your money is gone.

The slope is slippery indeed. I just ordered $60 worth of doll clothes, and a 1/12 scale couch. Last week I was buying miniature office furniture. Customizable tiny robogirls is a helluva drug.

You don't have to paint them. Well depending on which one you got. They will all need some panel lining to look nice, highly recommend looking into seam welding as well. But a few are like poor stylet will look extremely plain without some paint.

However like the others said, your Megami Devices will be fine with just the panel lining. Any further details that are needed can be handled by the supplied waterslides.
>>
I've been trying to seam weld on my latest kits, but it's not working out so well. I think I must be using the wrong type of glue. Testors model master doesn't seem to have enough filler or something. The parts stick together just fine, but there's no welding effect.

>>6391779

if you managed to get >>6391667, then you already got >>6391647. Suikoden is a PS1 game, and is one of the games that Psycho Mantis was able to check your memory card to see if you played it.

>>
>>6392225
it's possible it is meant for the wrong kind of plastic. I don't think that is the case though. I also have been using Testors Plastic Cement and struggling with it. Sometimes I get a perfect weld other times not so perfect with traces of the line still clearly visible.

And I also don't think amount of filler in it matters that much. I know that the extra thin tamiya is most recommended because it has no filler making it great for capillary action to do most of the work. And to double as putty if you need some by melting down sprues in it without having to worry about preexisting filler ruining the color.

It is pure suffering to live without any modelling experience, but little robot girls are too cute. Few questions so I can consider my future:
1. How badly can seam welding and painting go for first timer?
2. Are there paints that exactly match the most common FAG colors other than the official ones which are impossible to obtain?
3. Do I need anything else than water for decals?
4. What is panel lining?
5. Are weapon runners painted or something? I cut of Stylet's katanas and they left quite bad looking traces.
6. Who can I pay to do all of this?

>It's worth noting that the Dendrobium's price can be chopped by 12,960 yen by getting four Blitz Gunners and a Movable Crawler instead of Powered Guardians.

It seems that the one that was featured in Hobby Japan actually used the 4 Blitz Gunner + Movable Crawler configuration as well. This is the list from the magazine which is different from the picture I posted

- Violence Ram
- Freestyle Bazooka
- Missile + Radome x4
- Revolving Buster Cannon
- Lance Doubleblade
- Spiral Crusher
- Propellant Tank (Square)
- Propellant Tank (Round) x4
- Energy Shield
- Glaive Arms
- Blitz Gunner x4
- Movable Crawler

After punching in the numbers it comes to a more "reasonable" 25,920 Yen at MSRP after tax

>Similarly, replacing Stylet and Baselard's parts with equivalents

Is that even possible? It seems that most of those parts (besides Stylet's gattling gun) are exclusive to them
>>
>>6392352
Ho boy. It sounds like you need....

To read the guide
>>
>>6392352
Buy cheap Gunpla and practice on them first (You can also salvage their weapons and stuff later).
>>
>>6392352
1. It's hard to fuck up a model with seam welding unless you like spill the whole bottle of cement over your parts. What's more likely to happen is you just miss a spot or two and don't get a full weld.

Painting you will screw up on the first time though. Practice on cheaper models like 1/144 gundams before you try it on a FAG.

2. What official ones? The FAG branded Gaianotes ones or Mr. Color? The latter, at least, aren't impossible to obtain. If you're not using Mr. Color and aren't following the color guides in the back of each manual, your best bet is just mixing paints and finding the right color through trial and error.

3. read the guide (it's in the OP)
4. guide
5. If your nippers aren't good enough to cut without leaving much of a trace, try leaving a small part of the runner on when you nip the part off, and cut off (with a hobby knife) or file down what's left. You'll get less discoloration that way.

6. Dude why? Just learn. It's more satisfying if you do it yourself.

Also read the damn guide.
>>
>>6392354
By equivalents I mean being willing to replace Stylet's jetpack and shoulder extensions with another jetpack and Baselard's arms with other arms. Killer Beak covers the jetpack at 1080 yen MSRP+tax and allows attaching the skis to Gourai's shoulders in place of Stylet's blades, saving 4,104 over Stylet. An original Stylet:RE is also a cheaper option at 3,780 MSRP+tax and comes with an accurate booster and blades.

Arms are a bit trickier to get at cheaper than Baselard's 6,804, but an Architect frame is only 1,296 and comes with arms as well as a torso that can be attached to Gourai's back to mount them on, with the jetpack in turn attaching to the torso. In the anime Baselard's arms just float there next to Gourai's sides, so additional display stands would be required. A Flexible Arm B, which is an extra 864, may be desirable to serve as an extender to the shoulders.

This is about how badly painting can go, but guess what? COMPLETELY FIXABLE!!!. strip it and do it again. Thats the great thing about painting, you don't need to go through tons of kits practicing your skills, you just keep trying until you got it right because you can return the model back to how it was before your painting went wrong. Also please bear in mind that just because you can't 'thin' spray paint, it does not mean it is a cruise control for instant good. You still need thin layers of paint, not one thick layer spraying until the color is fully solid.

Seam Welds on the other hand are hard to screw up but mistakes do happen and a slight spill like from too much cement on the brush spilling out of the seam does sometimes happens. And unlike paint, cement will physically alter your part's surface within seconds of hitting the plastic making it hard to clean up fast. It is still something that can be fixed, you have to wait an hour or two for the plastic to reharden before you sand down the rough surface caused by the cement. Worst case scenarios might result in reduction of sculpt details on the part, but that is it.

Seam welding seems really scary first time, but it is quite easy. just avoid the joints.

cant answer much on the paints and you will find that doing your own kits is a very relaxing and great experience.
the other ones I will leave to the guide

Also forgot to mention that I don't understand even sanding. Tried it on few nubs that won't even be visible outside, but it scratched the surrounding area so easily that I had to stop right there.

I didn't actually come up with the premise, it was collectively devised by a bunch of anons and I just ran with it. I'll try and work in an explanation, but it's probably going to boil down to tiny robot girls being at least somewhat expensive. I'm also going to say she manages whatever funds Master had that allowed him to be a hikikomori at his age, so she's making income other than just via camshows. She keeps doing them because Master had her do them, and the order she was given was to carry on without him.

My thought is that non-tiny robot girls are actually outright illegal: the most common two types are military weapons, which are basically a more advanced version of the kind seen in Moon Angel, and sexbots, usually either owned by law-skirting brothels or by individuals wealthy enough to use them as escorts. Sayuri's piloting an escort model that she built herself over the course of a few years.

Seam weld means to glue the parts together and and then sand the union. Since cement actually melts the parts together after sanding the seam should disappear. There shouldn't be a need to paint if you don't want to.

Putty involves applying a paste to fill gaps and it's also used to hide seams on scale models, you will get a better finish but you do require to paint the whole part afterwards.
>>
>>6391843
Are you using the color recipe as described in the manual? How well does it match the fleshtone OOB (if you compare it to the faces that come with decals applied already?)

>>
>>6392475
well on the sanding issue, this is why I use those cheap nail file sanding and buffing combo boards. Ones I get from the dollar store have 7 or so different stages to them. Yes you will scratch up more then the nub unless you are being extremely careful with a very thin needle file, so you use the very stages of the nail board to buff out the scratches.
>>
>>6392991

If the nub whitens you probably need to scratch it out. I use a cheap beveled grinder to demolish the nub, then go 300 followed by 500 on sandpaper. Final step is a 800-1000 grit 3m sanding sponge and a soft buff. If I want the gloss back, one layer of pledge floor wax does it.

>>6393341
kinda, like the others said, the extra thin will easily spread over the seam line when applied assembled. so it will help matters a lot. However you still need to have some level of respect and understanding about the tools you are using and use it with moderation. Even with the extra thin do not slather it across the seam like it was paint. Cement is not a glue you are use to, it is a solvent, it chemically melts down the plastic and as the solvent evaporates the plastic molecules reform into a solid form.

Materia legs are a little longer and thicker than Baselard legs, so it looks like an extra thick pair of stockings, conversely Baselard's legs are too thin and slender to use on Materias

Baselard can also use Materia/Innocentia feet and vice versa but the connector peg of the Materia feet are a little longer than that of Baselard's lower leg socket, so there will be a small gap in between. You can diy a washer to fill it if you have the right tools and materials, for mine I bored out a round panel from MSG P129 with a 3mm drill

speaking of translucency, is there a way to apply sprue goo for major resculpting in a way that there won't be any surprises like soft uncured plastic underneath (since plastic cements work on evaporation)... like, how thin should you go with sprue goo layers at a given time?

See, I found out while sanding down excess tamiya putty, that even thinly applied layers have a surprise uncured amount of solvent underneath, even if you give it 48+ hours of cure time.
>>
>>6393867
It actually looks more convincing this way with the skindentation/clothesdentation at the boundary. Modellers even try to sculpt it back in anyway, so you saved yourself a couple extra days of work.

trial and error in regards to when you pull the stuff out and other things. I have heard from some older modelers they had better luck working with turpentine instead of cement. They say a big trick is not to let it become pure liquid but a mallable solid. So timing is apparantly key.

Not without either sprue goo or putty.

In either case you should sand away clear coat so it's feathered down before getting to work. Then re-apply the clear coat after whatever thing you do.

You could glue it together, then recast + dye a clear resin copy of the fixed piece. A couple of times?

Polyester resin is more fragile than epoxy resin, bear in mind, but resin dyes will work on both as long as you mix them all in the liquid form.

>sprue goo
>mineral spirits/turnpenoids with styrene

Wouldn't this stuff just continue to seep into the plastic over time and make it brittle without you knowing it?

>As the sprue soaks in the turps the outer surface softens, then I mash it into the offending gap or line. The 'wet' sprue deforms well and spreads to fill the cavity, leaving enough material proud of the surface to allow for shrinking.

Wouldn't the wet part of the sprue be unable to evaporate due to being sandwiched and trapped, and that the solvent will continue to penetrate the plastic and not evaporate?

The Korean video's method was to touch and go with this thing in small dabs, to make it evaporatable?

A thousand year/century egg. It's an egg that's been preserved for a few months in any number of different alkaline materials. The white turns sorta translucent and the yolk turns greenish. It's got a deep creamy flavor, but also tends to have an offputting ammonia-like smell so it's often diced and thrown into something like rice porridge to eliminate that.

I managed to remove some from edges, but from surface side it seems impossible. Even if the nub is totally flat, it still looks much darker than rest of the part and more sanding only causes tiny scratches around it. For example those two blue parts around Stylet's waist.

There seem to be two ways to adjust the breast line.

First step is to drill two new peg holes for the chestpiece to mount higher.

Then:
-you trim away the top of the chest plate to kind of match up with the rest of the chest piece contour + putty sculpt the gap where you moved the plate from

OR

Do the reverse, saw/grind away that region on the chest piece to make it seat lower, socket included. Rather not saw the ball peg which would be more delicate to being stressed.

The 1/12 furniture and accessories I've picked up for them like this set of folding chairs seems to all be slightly too small (Though they may fit shinkis and MD better). At the least, FAGs are getting buffed to Shinki levels in that their weapons still work outside the holodeck.

TEMPESTA
>>
>>6396225
That one was part of the inspiration for this. The concept I had in mind was that they worked out the bugs from the prototype in the OVA, which I think was in one of the games too? Regardless, those human-size military models eventually got adapted into the recreational-use model Sayuri pilots. She in turn got the plans for it from contact with other masterless girls.

I also don't recall if the Shinki anime touched on masterless Shinkis. Writing blind, my impulse would be that it takes considerable willpower to avoid going crazy without a master, since fulfilling their master's wishes is normally the central driving goal of their programming. If the anime has a different interpretation, though, I'd be more likely to defer to that.
>>
>>6396241
>>I also don't recall if the Shinki anime touched on masterless Shinkis
Oh body they did. There's an entire underground city of masterless Shinkis, and as usual with a shanty town there's plenty of crime.
>>
>>6396074
Because they're cute? You could use them to charge stuff but it'd be a hassle with adapters and such, there's cheap chink ones for that
>>
>>6396249
And yes, there are Shinkis who do Shinki drugs (mainly restricted to custom versions of those juice pods they had).
>>
>>6396249
>>6396258
Does it touch on the psychology of it any, or are they basically just like normal Shinkis except for being homeless?

The concept I had in mind was that Sayuri's considered somewhat special because of her master's order, and because she's one of if not the first to try full-on posing as a human. Both of these factors have a lot of the other masterless AI paying a lot of attention to how well she does: the posing, because if she can actually manage it then it offers them an opportunity to get out from the underground, and the order because it's provided her with a level of stability that most masterless don't have in my original conception of the idea. Should I stick with that, or modify it?
>>
>>6396230
I'd think it's something like the last fight of Armored Core Verdict Day where they pull out a boss from a previous game with a different setting; All the robots up to that point were clunky chunks of metal waddling around and all of a sudden you get a 2fast2furious transforming max speed *teleports behind u* asshole teice your size with a barrier farting out magic cancer particles.

It was glorious.
>>
The PSP games have an underground Shinki fight club filled with people using shinki with illegal mods and the majority of masters are creepy cringy types (this is a good thing). It's great.
>>
>>6396272
iirc, what happens is that Shinki are normally supposed to be returned to the manufacturers and mindwiped but some Shinki object to that and want to remember their masters (as Shinkis imprint on the first person they see when their package is opened and consider them as master, hence the need for a reset if they're going to be transferred or recycled) or they ran away for one reason or another. So they're Shinkis who are trying to be independent in a society that doesn't accept independent Shinkis.
>>
>>6396278
So it's purely social rather than psychological, then. A bit different, but I can probably still use the same fundamentals.
>>
>>6396287
It's psychological in the sense that Shinkis aren't supposed to do that, but they have the capacity to grow beyond what's expected of them. Or something like that, it's been a while and the show didn't really touch on the psychological implications as much.

The FAGs we saw in the anime were pretty low-spec compared to Shinkis. We saw the main Shinks casually lift what's probably a hundred fifty times their body weight with no issue at all.
>>
>>6396397
Their strenght wasnt consistant at all outside the battle pocket dimension, they were depicted carrying heavier stuff but also having problems moving a bottle or a wooden doll.
>>
>>6396416
FAGs are also a bit inconsistent, given Hresvelgr can boot down a door. Hres is supposed to be retardedly strong compared to everyone else, but I don't think it's supposed to be so massive a gap that the other FAGs can't move comparably heavy objects.

There's actually a Hresvelgr in this chapter at the moment. I considered setting the bar at it being a mildly impressive feat that she can heave open a human-scale solid steel door without armor.

When the fuck if Kotobukiya going to re-issue the weapon sets?
The Set 1 is at fucking 7180 yen pre-owned at Amiami.

Yeah, FAGs are pretty low-spec in general. And nowhere near as smart as Shinki and MD.

Anyone here be able to give any info on this shinki resin kit?
>>

Word's on the street resin gives you lung cancer, other than that i've never heard of this before.

No fair, pretty much zankantou-tier sword at that level and scale.

Resin in liquid form is that hazardous to your lungs, especially polyester and urethane resins. Use respirators and goggles when working.

Artresin brand claims itself to be super-low-VOC resin, but it's epoxy resin.

Ouch.

But don't FAGs have the edge in terms of AI and self-developing?

Keep in mind FAGs even in-universe are meant to be toys whereas Shinkis are all-purpose miniature robots that even do hazardous jobs. The scope of their purpose is a little different.

>FAGs even in-universe are meant to be toys
The FAG world must be highly advanced if they're using evolving nanomachines and state-of-the-art AI technology in toys.
>>
>>6396851
Oops. Why don't you cast it?
>>
>>6396892
Hey, according to Small Soldiers, military surplus tech is perfectly acceptable for toys.

Somebody doesn't know how security works.
>>
>>6397094
Somebody underestimates the power of the botnet, even Apple lets engineers go around with prototypes, with nanomachines they could not only remotely wipe software but also fuck up the hardware.
