For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

>>6386987
Right by a country mile. That green is wrong though, try something closer to the green from the left but maybe a tad more pale.
>>
>>6386990
forgot to put the context of it being rough and rushed color estimate without eye dropper. Anyways picking between the original shia colors or the 00 qanta colors.
>>
>>6386993
00 Qanta had a good colorscheme. I'd stick with that. The left one looks like seaweed and algae.

>The final price is expected to be approximately £84-£86 and is due to be released in September 2017. When the item comes into stock, you will be sent a link to pay for the remaining balance.
I think I'm just going to try and convince my friend to buy it and send it over to me.
>>
>>6386987
I'm gonna go against what the other guy said. Skip that boring fucking Exia ass looking colorscheme. The left one is perfectly pleasant, though personally I would try to get a little more of that dark green in there so it feels a little more balanced. I would probably add dark green on the shield, the sides of the chest that are currently light green, and some on those...spiky shits hanging off its shoulders.

Also, do away with the yellow--it looks shitty and it's so close to the chartreuse that it makes you doubletake and rub your eyes in a bad way. Replace the yellow parts with the same chartreuse you used on the trapezius area..

Weirdly, I'm not quite sure what to say. The HGUC Hazel's sculpt always seemed a little squashy and soft to me, but I assumed it was because it was an older HG. But the MG kinda looks like that to me too...I guess that's just how it is.
>>
>>6387129
Just to clarify, with P-Bandai preorders through N-Y, am I paying the price shown + shipping to me? Or do I also need to pay an additional fee for shipping from Bandai to them?
>>
>>6387139
The price on the listing is the price you pay.
So if you're in the UK like me, it'll cost £64.32 total shipped via trans logistic postage, with the customs included in that cost.
>>
>>6387145
No, I'm in the US...and I just did a shipping estimate on the Hazel. The cheapest shipping they offer is like 1900jpy. Hmm. Kinda pricey. Wish they offered SAL.

Anyone know if the model bingo stargazer comes painted or in color molded resin? This is the only photo I can find of the loose parts and no retailers state if it needs painted or not. If it's painted then I'd end end getting it but if it's not then the cost of the kit plus an mg impulse plus paints is just too much for me.
>>
>>6387071
not him but Bandai has 'teased' so many kits ages ago we have yet to get that it is almost unfair to use that as proof of anything other then that they had 'plans' for it. a kit from 2005 and they didn't ever discuss it since? Yeah sorry but the idea that they blew the dust off of those plans because of someone else making the kit is definitely in the realm of possibility.
>>
>>6387223
Bro, he was talking about Magictoys teasing the Hazel Advanced in the manual of their recent MG Hazel, not Bandai.
>>
>>6387217
I'm 90% sure it's unpainted
>>
>>6387217
Frankly, even if it comes in color molded resin, you're gonna wanna paint. You're going to wanna cover up the scratching from the inevitable sanding you'll have to do, and plus, being molded in color is never gonna give you really nice vibrant colors (and especially not that metallic gold in the pic!)

Is there any reason why Bandai doesn't produce military models anymore? With their technology and design, an aircraft model made by them could be snapped together, have more part separation, have articulate parts, and have swappable accessories.

Building my first kit. Just realized that not wholeheartedly sanding down a nub because it wasn't visible (and would be inserted inside a socket) was an incredibly stupid move. Some fitting problems that are obvious when you look at this piece from the right angle.

I've heard bad things about the dangers of pulling pieces apart. Have I made a permanent mistake?

Are HGs/RGs as fun as MG's? Ive always built MG's but RG's and HG's have more variety and are cheaper
>>
>>6388176

it's all the same exact shit, it just depends whether your fun depends on how nice the fine detail and inner frame is

if your fun is just derived from the building process, it's all the same, HGs just have fewer pieces

RG is MG detail in HG scale and is my favorite grade because they take me a long time, look great, and dont take up a lot of space when theyre done

Seeing all this preshading stuff, and seeing how you do edge highlighting on miniatures...

Doesn't it make more sense, and in real life to do edge highlights instead of preshading + highlights in the center of sections?

There is this weird optical illusion I get that these preshaded pieces are bulging from the center, anyone?

It's as solid as the other MG Seed vRM kits, but it has some fiddly bits you need to glue on at some point. The black part on the top of the torso in particular, and if you make a habit of removing the backpack (to swap in other Seed vRM backpacks) the black parts inside the thrusters will fall out all the damn time too.

Weapon-wise, the shield is kind of a bitch to pose with thanks to big yellow spike on the back, and if you shake it too much the needles can get loose. The claw is alright, but the provided wire can't really support its weight for long. It's kinda hard to pose with the shield too.

For some reason Beecraft added these weird movable claws to the back of its feet. I feel like they're supposed to help it grip onto the ground, but they don't reach far enough so they're just kinda there.

The only other thing of note is that the Blitz has a /remarkably/ detailed ass interior.

So, I just got some thick ass Gundam markers that I guess are used for painting? The guide doesn't cover how to use them, so I was curious on the order of using them to paint, and then doing panel lines.
>>
>>6388479
gundam markers come in several varieties.
Your basic run of the mill markers are not normal markers, but are filled with paint which is what allows them to color plastic. You don't really use them to panel line.

then you got your panel lining pens. These are actually pens so the stuff inside is not the same kind of paint as in the markers. you can ID these by the 3 basic fine tips black gray and brown being numbers GM01, 02, and 03

Then you got some swanky new things I can't always find online as weasily as the others, pour type markers. Basically these have extra thin paint for panel lining. You use capilary action to fill in a large chunk of a panel line on it's own. Look for 300,301, etc for them.

>>
>tfw no tiny FA to have as the tiny gobbo loli
>>
>>6388343
Like I've been saying...

On most models = usual preshading even on edges

Real life = opposite, edge highlighting, the middle is actually the darker portion

I think, the reason why preshading kind of works for military models is because they're all riveted onto a scaffolding, and some of them have their panels a little bulging or tacked on top (like ship hull panels when you look at them).

Otherwise I think preshading is a meme, and I think the more palatable options is blackbasing/fuzzy mottled undercoat or edge highlighting.

>end all be all realism

It's that when you look at things for depth/referencing, that preshading tends to look exaggerated and fake when you get to scales smaller than 1/35 to 1/72?

these things are fun but basic.
you don't even need a pair of cutters, the gates are made to pop out the piece.
when making the internal frame, you're told to put pieces together while they're still on the sprues, then pop them out together.
it's really quite clever but it threw me with how weird it was.

Uhh, you sound like you might be looking at the wrong products. You're not looking for any old Pledge product, you specifically want Pledge Floor Polish with Future Shine. It comes in a squeeze bottle. There are some regional variations on the name if you're not in the US, Google "Future Floor Swannie's Models" for more info.
>>
>>6389227
You want Future that's specifically acrylic. You don't want wax, you don't want a cleaner, you want an acrylic floor finish.

Or you could just buy an acrylic gloss coat from an art store and it should be similar, maybe a little weaker, maybe not. You could even try a lacquer finish, though that might damage your model depending on how strong it is

Alright, I know this is a pretty simple question, but I need to ask something about masking/painting very small details. This is the HGUC Zaku II Johnny Ridden. In the little vents, the smallest rectangle is meant to be black, and the rest of the inside is red. How in the fuck am I supposed to paint that? How do I get to mask something so small? Everything tutorial I find masks large parts, pretty common sense and easy mask jobs. But I have no idea how I'm mean to handle this. Coming back to the hobby after 2 years break and just trying to expand my skills. Thanks.

Is there a way to take finger prints off these metallic pieces after the fact? I stopped building it a while ago because I noticed marks and I didn't have any gloves. Also how do I sand the nubs without it looking bad in contrast to the shiny paint.
>>
>>6390219
Soft cloths work, like the ones they give you when you buy a pair of glasses. They're super cheap.
>>
>>6390219
You can try first removing as much as possible with a xacto knife. I have been using something close to pic related to sand down the smaller nubs. From my experience, you can only get it so perfect.
>>
>>6390219
There's nothing much you can do about the nubs on Vac-metal painted kits. You can only hope that the kit is under-gated, where the nubs are designed into hidden areas. Most of the newer Hyaku Shiki kits are like that
>>
Thanks , I have a microfiber cloth so I'll just build it without worrying about fingerprints if they come off with that. I don't have it in front of me so I don't remember if I messed up any nubs but i'll just be careful to keep it looking nice.

That Frame Arms Girl anime got me interested in model kits again after not building any since the first Zoids anime was on TV in the UK whenever that was.
So I've ordered a couple of Gundams but despite my love of mechs, I've never actually watched any Gundam anime, it always just seems a bit overwhelming when I look at how much there is.
Where is a good place to start with the anime? what's worth watching? what should I avoid?
>>
>>6390494
The easiest for new people are 00 and Iron-Blooded Orphans, since they are fairly new, split into two seasons of 25 episodes each (which makes it easier to watch too) and they are self-contained stories, so nothing else is needed to be watched to understand stuff.

If you get more into it, you could then try watching the UC shows in release order.

Fuck....fuck fuck fuck.

I finish building the new Barzam, shit's going good, it looks great. I go to pose it for the first time and the leg pops off. When I go to reattach it, I notice that there are BRUTAL stress marks on the hip joint. I took a look at the other hip and they're there too....this doesn't bode well for the future of this kit. I'm really worried they're gonna snap soon, and their unique design means I can't easily replace them from my polycap bin.

Anyone else having problems? Check your Barzams...

Really dumb question, but how do I glue clear pieces onto opaque pieces without having them fog up?

I'm trying my luck with a volks kit (pic related) and the clear parts need to be glued in because the socket wasn't engineered to fit pieces snugly.

Reason I ask because I saw a video of a guy bitching about how when he glued in the clear piece, it made the backing all foggy and mucky looking because he painted them first, then glued the pieced together after he painted them.

Would I need to glue them first, then paint via masking? Because that won't really work. The leg for example, is split down the middle as usual. Meaning if I wanted to glue the clear piece in the leg, I would need to glue the entire leg together, inner frame and all, and would have to mask off heavily.

pls halp, I've been putting off finishing this kit for nearly 2 years.
>>
Anyone have experience in wiring leds? Specifically for pieces that aren't just eye lenses? I'm curious if there's a way to properly diffuse the led's light so that in a larger piece (say a long rectangular panel or something), there isn't a glaring led in 1 spot with the rest of the panel poorly lighted. Multiple lights wouldn't really work either since you would just see a bunch of bulbs instead of the panel being evenly lighted. Some way to fuck with fiber optics perhaps?
>>
>>6391783
Use a thin layer of frosted styrene or pet-g to diffuse multiple LEDs. This doesn't work super well in large scale, but for kits I think it'll work fine.
>>
>>6391777
I believe the most common way is to use PVA glue. It's not the strongest bond, but it will prevent any fogging. I recommend goggling stuff about gluing model aircraft canopies for more info.

>>6391828
Googled around a bit, I think I understand. Though, the idea of using pva glue kind of makes me uneasy, afraid pieces will fly off the moment I try strike a pose. I mean, it makes sense for aircraft canopies, but for something I will occasionally change poses, makes me a bit skeptic. Understandably pva glue would yield a weaker bond than plastic cement, but by how much?

Using this method though, could I glue the two pieces together once they're already painted or would I have to glue them when they're still unpainted?

I used http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10205776 for pic related.
It stays slightly flexible even when cured, so pieces won't fly. You do need a UV light source though.
>>
>>6390539
You'll rewatch Build Fighters every now and then anyway.
>>
>>6391854
Any strong glue will attack the surface of the clear piece causing it to fog up. Plastic cement especially, since it literally melts the surface to produce a bond. The next best thing you can do is to build up a thick layer of clear coat that encloses those clear panels and the area surrounding it, sorta like a laminated seal.
>>
>>6392073
Build Fighters was so damn good. Expected a glorified toy commercial, ended up with a Batman Beyond level of amazing.

>>
>>6392128

>>
>>6392131

Not the anime, the gunpla model kits. Ane itself was fine.
>>
Jumping back into Gunpla after a good few years, last kit I built was the RG RX-78-2 when it first came out.
>>
>>6392136
same statement applies
>>
>>6392131
The HGBF kits were almost all lazy as hell, cost cutting as much as possibly by recycling previous kits no matter the age. HGBF Build mkII and Qubeley Papillion are the standouts, far worse than Tristan.

Don't bring Gundam fanboy bullshit into this thread. A bad kit is a bad kit.
>>
>>6392256
Not that Anon, but how was the Mk. II bad? Just because it used the old HG mold?
>>
>>6391777
They make a special cement for this kind of thing. Look for Model Master's Clear Parts Cement.
>>
>>6392256
>How dare those model kits that are canonically based off of other model kits be based off of other model kits
>>
>>6392259
They literally released a by-then decade old kit with a new backpack and a few new parts on the torso and the head. And, being a HGBF kit, the backpack was super cheap too and relied heavily on stickers. And this was being marketed right alongside the entirely new Build Strike.

There's a reason BF Try started moving towards new designs overall. HGBF was hurt a lot by the ridiculously inconsistent quality.
>>
>>6392267
>entirely new Build Strike
Except for all the parts borrowed from the HGCE Aile Strike.
>>
>>6392269
HGBF Build Strike came out before HGCE Aile Strike. The molds were almost certainly designed with the intention of releasing a separate Aile Strike, as were the Crossbone Maoh's for the HGUC X1, but that doesn't change the release dates.

Do your fucking research.
>>
>>6392270
So you're mad that they sometimes used old molds but also sometimes used new ones? They could have used the old HG Strike.
>>
>>6392267
I can understand the problems with that. I am also conflicted, because I quite enjoy the Mk II, and want to add the Build to my collection.
>>
>>6392277
Kitbash it with the Revive, my dude.
>yfw almost every old kit that was used as the basis for a BF suit has gotten a revival by now
>>
>>6392267
That's a little harsh. Here are the effective original release dates of each BF kit. As a reminder, BF came out in 2013.

>Build Strike: 2013
>Zaku Amazing: 2013
>X Maoh: 2010
>Build mkII: 2002
>Bearguy III: 2007
>Wing Fenice: 2013
>Sengoku Astray: 2013
>Kampfer Amazing: 2008
>GM Sniper K9: 2012
>Qubeley Papillion: 1999 (!!)
>Miss Sazabi: 2008
>Exia Dark Matter: 2007
>Crossbone Maoh: 2014
>Gouf R35: 2014
>Fenice Rinascita: 2014

So even before the shift towards more modern molds at the end, the BF kits were relatively recent. Qubeley Papillion and Build mkII are the outliers.
>>
>>6392273
How in the world did you get that out of what I'm posting? If they could make new molds for the Build Strike and the Wing Fenice, they sure as hell could have made new molds for the Build mkII.
>>
>>6392282
Especially when the show itself has Sei say that he didn't base the Build mkII off the old HG, he made a new one from the ground up.

Basically all of the figurerise busts suffer from looking really garish out of the box. There's no particular shading or anything, it's all just glossy colors that make the molded detail just look weird. The sculpts weren't exactly the greatest either.

With that said, the Fumina busts were okay, and the upcoming Hatsune Miku looks like a notable step up. Maybe Bandai's finally getting better at this?

Dude, you're courting broken blades flying off (and possible hospitalization). Use panel line scribers to gradually and safely cut into thicker plates.

I also had an idea for a continuation of this pic, which would require me to get RG versions of both of those kits, but after building the 3.0 I can't say that I want to build it one more time at a smaller scale
>>
>>6393285
had budget issues pop up that delayed me buying a kit and now my local hobby shop closed up so I don't know what to do about plaplates for the moment.
>>
>>6393554
I started my 3.0 last night after coming off the RG, it seems like a pretty different build so far (I've just started the arms).
I will say that the RG is less enjoyable than the 3.0 though.

I'll wait for one that allows more physical modifications to be made.

It very well might be a different build, but looking at the pics on dalong they look pretty much identical (except for the inner frame of course)

I don't want to modify the FAG I have beyond painting, is painting enough to enter?

They're both based off the old 1/1 Gundam statue, of course they look the same. The actual build processes are completely different.

But doesn't this build say the sky is the limit? or do you have ideas that make it completely impossible to tell it was ever an FA or FAG in the first place?

Confirmed.

I soaked some parts for 3-4 weeks, and with a fair amount of elbow grease and toothbrush scrubbing I was able to strip the paint off, even the primer layers.

However the degreaser will turn any superglue and epoxy putty into a rubber chunk or destroy them entirely.

I'm building my first Little Armory kit (kriss vector SMG) and the two haves are just...NOT going together. I can't figure out why. Everything is lined up, and it seems to snap together fine, but then I hear this sort of creaking sound a second later and it separates. Any ideas?
>>

>Little Armory kit (kriss vector SMG

I tried to get a couple of those and it's all out of stock
>>

Well, if it's any consolation, it seems rather shit. I've been trying this for like 20 minutes now. The two halves just won't stay together. Nothing seems warped, and all the pegs lock in fine. They just start gapping for some reason.

And without those two halves snapping together properly, I can't even use the other parts like the silencer. It just falls right out.

I was certain about A1, but it turns out A2 had a teeeeensy little burr of plastic that was causing problems. Tolerances can be a real bitch when the parts are this small I guess! Thanks for making me go back and doublecheck anon, it solved my problem.

Well, sorta. Shit. After I typed this post the foregrip fell off and I noticed the gun was gapping again. It's thoroughly trimmed and doublechecked this time, so....I guess it's just an imperfect kit maybe? I dunno. I'm gonna try and glue it. I'm also starting to realize this gun is a hand grenade in general--there are so many small parts and they all like to fall/pop off VERY easily. I'm gonna have to glue a lot, which is a shame since they give you two sets of parts and I woulda liked to swap between them.
>>
>>6394904
Damn, I was hoping the fragility wasn't the case.
I ordered the Vector and the M82A2 yesterday and woke up this morning to an Out of Stock notification, so perhaps I was saved.
Today I decided to try getting the M82A1 and LA207 instead, but my hopes are pretty low.
I think these things would look great with Frame Arms but if they keep exploding then it's kinda pointless.
I mean, they're not exactly cheap either.
>>
>>6394910
Yeah, this is my first and I'm a bit disappointed with it after what I paid. If you end up getting any please report back in whatever gunpla thread is alive at the time, I'm curious to know if they're all like this.

It DOES look cool though! And after some closer inspection, I think I might only need to glue a few parts (the main body, foregrip, maybe iron sights) and that solidity might solve the rest of the problems. So it's possible I can still maintain most of the modularity if things go well!

If you're working with oil paints, don't pick natural hair brushes. Go synthetic.

Lacquers aren't nearly hot enough to be a problem with natural hair, which I assume is what you're actually warning about because oil paints cover a huge range.

Is the only good method to spraying even coats on round objects or weapons is to "lay it flat, spray one pass, flip, repeat"?

I've been having a bad time with "mount weapon or round thing on a stick" to spray even coats, because my hand tremors are pretty bad, so my hand holding the stick wobbles violently, so the plastic gets stressed and the thing snaps.

So how do you guys deal with weapon parts being sprayed evenly?

Take a look at the Shenron gundam, it's more clear then the others in the background so it looks like action figure plastic and paint rather then just model. He also has the cobra gundam which only ever had an MSIA. Now looking at the Heavyarms you can see that the missiles are obviously colored.

As far as we can tell this guy is a snapfag who can't even into nubs, let alone paint, and he has action figures in the background so think it is safe to say that heavy arms is a MSIA. Heck I am willing to be that model is the only one he has.

He tried to apply another layer of paint to get the color down some more, but the friction of the brush picked up the not-so-fully dry layer beneath and clumped to make a streaky mess. The fingerprints are from trying to awkwardly hold the pieces all over instead of mounting it on a stick.
