For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

Any advice that is not "Read the guide" to someone who has a moderate knowledge of building Gunpla and other models, but still feels pretty trash at the hobby? I mean I'm thirtyish plus models in, and I feel like even a beginner somehow is going to be superior to me in every way.
>>
>>6372398
Considering you haven't posted any pictures, we can't tell you anything.

Rrad the guide
Go out of your comfort zone, try to scratchbuild something, learn from your mistakes. There isn't really a road that everyonr follows to get gud, just follow wherever your heart or you dick takes you.
>>
>>6372405
This. My dick said buy the Dendrobium. My head is telling me paint that shit. My dick is adding that I should add led's to the thrusters
>>
>>6372398
Read more guides.
Here, have funaka's gunpla guide: http://funakatown.com/images/Building_Gunpla_Final.pdf
And his scratchbuilding guide: http://funakatown.com/images/Funakas_Scratchbuilding.pdf

Plus Falldog's guide, among plenty of others. Experiment. The only way you're going to get better is by fucking up a few times, with the experience and knowledge of what you're doing wrong from doing so.

You should also get the metal thrusters and add a bunch of panel lines and surface details and shit while you're at it.

Think of it this way: it's unlikely that you will build a second Dendrobium in your lifetime, might as well go balls to the wall on this one.
>>
>>6372401
I lack any to post at the current time, would be 8-12 hours before I could take any at that.

>>6372405
>>6372413
Honestly, I think the mistakes are what make me lose hope and stop trying. I've never had a ton of money, so if I buy something I try to keep it safe and in as decent of condition as possible. That's probably a major reason why I'm always double guessing myself and taking the safest possible route in building and even the simple things like not panel lining.
>>
>>6372424
Yeah give us pictures and we'll help you a bit more, because tell you xyz and giving you guides to read only does so much.
>>
>>6372418
I'm going to use chrome powder coating tech for the thrusters. Been reading some guides and doing test coats on equally curved surfaces. Coming out alright enough I think
>>
>>6372424
You should definitely try some touch up things. I'm just peaking in here and don't frequent. Never post at all. I'm a filthy casual that will probably get meme'd all over by people as a snap-fit, but you can do a lot of little things with cheap high-grade kits to make them nicer. Panel lining, water slide decals, and small painting details (thrusters, sticker areas, verniers) are things you can experiment with which can be stripped off really easily if you don't like them.
>>
>>6372413

All the guides to scratchbuilding hands are gone.

I was meaning to build a very specific idea of a four-fingered hand, kinda more industrial-looking, but all the ready made gunpla hands available killed this whole technique.

Anyone got any archives?

The kits sacrifice articulation and stability for the sake of their transformation.

With that said, the Victories don't have particularly many dynamic poses to begin with. They look great loaded up with accessories and in a neutral stance, and the MGs can pull that off just fine. Don't be afraid to use glue to keep it in MS mode.

>>6372549

So looking back over the pieces, I figured the circled areas have large hollow cavities which would be perfect spots for LED wiring.

I'm thinking of making some clear epoxy molds for the thrusters and those two circled sections on the turbine and putting LED's there and in the missile pod and run it down into the base to put the power switch. Fortunately, I still have the switch set up from my MetalKings Zaku Tank, so I wouldnt need to get a new one.

You should be using a parts separator and going slowly and carefully. It's not an easy job no matter how you look at it, but it's WAY harder if you're trying to do it without a proper separator.

Snip a little bit off the pegs at an angle, it makes it easier to take them apart and when you're done you can just cement the pegs so they're nice and solid

not too bad, actually. usual third party fitting issues though, polycap is kind of hard so need some loosening to fit pegs/balljoints. also, requires a wash, seems pretty greasy.

plastic quality isnt too bad, and a lot of parts are actually undergated.

so far, just snapbuilding it has been a-ok.

recommended? yes, definite yes.

So, some of my old kits have parts that just keep developing magical stress cracks/fractures. Pic related but not mine.

My Clanche actually had her wrist guards shatter to pieces. How the fuck do I repair this and prevent it from happening again? Specially the wrist guards on the Clanche. I have an inkling the ball joint on the wrist expands the polycap too much thus cracking the flimsy THIN plastic wristguard...

- If I sand the wrist joint to make it smaller, the hand will end up limp and loose.
- If I shave he polycap's outer edges, the wrist guard will be loose.
- If I shave the inner part of the wrist guard that hugs the polycap, the wrist guard will be loose...

I'm stuck in a clanche-22 here.

Also. in regards to fixing stress fractures/cracks, do I use putty? or plastic cement to reattach and seal them back together? And what kind of putty do I use? Is that tamiya brand stuff ok?

My kits are unpainted. The image I used was just for reference on the magical cracks that appear out of nowhere and the image was not mine.

Encircled is the part of my clanche that keeps fucking shattering to pieces thanks to bandai's stupid structural engineering of putting massive outward stress on a really thin fragile piece of plastic.
>>
>>6373514
Is the arm properly assembled? Are there any gaps that are present due to poor construction?
>>
>>6373519
The arm is actually fine. It's the encircled wristguard that keeps breaking because of how thin the plastic is.

>Just shave down the bit it slips onto
That's just it. If I try to shave anything down, I sacrifice poseability for structural integrity.

>sand the wrist joint to make it smaller, the hand will end up limp and loose.
>shave the polycap's outer edges, the wrist guard will be loose.
>shave the inner part of the wrist guard that hugs the polycap, the wrist guard AND the ball-jointed wrist will be loose...

I'm screwed.

I have a Clanche Custom and it has the same problem, the polycap that holds the hand in is super tight around the wristguard to hold it in place
I haven't dealt with it yet but I'm thinking of shaving the inside of the polycap a bit so it doesn't have to expand to let the hand in, and putting a bit of superglue on the ball for friction so it still stays in place

>I'm thinking of shaving the inside of the polycap a bit so it doesn't have to expand to let the hand in, and putting a bit of superglue on the ball for friction so it still stays in place
Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of shaving the inside of the polycap in the first place? Since adding the superglue to the balljoint will just make it thicker and still cause the same/more level of outward pressure that will eventually break the thin wristguard?

>>6373688
It's the little lip on the polycap that the ball has to get through that causes the cracking, so shaving it down a tiny bit and then just a tiny layer of glue to add friction so the hand doesn't just fall out without making it any bigger is my plan
It would be easy if the cuff didn't need to removeable for the transformation

Also, looking at the manual pages, 1 & 2 are for the "bottom" halves and 3, 4, & 5 for the top halves; and also the two E1s will connect to the two D14s, and so on.
Also if you already clipped out and confuddled F12, 13, & 14 the manual points out marks that show which of those is which.

The HRM has shitloads of detail all over, especially considering the inner frame is like 50% exposed.

Yes. I don't think the elbows and knees are double jointed.

The fact that it even needs a sticker sheet is a problem. An MG would mold all those parts separately.
>>interior armor details/more details in general
Flip up an MG's skirt, or remove an armor piece. There's detail molded into the backs of those.
>The HRM has shitloads of detail all over, especially considering the inner frame is like 50% exposed.
Yes, on the parts that are meant to be exposed and thus play into the mobile suit's overall aesthetic. On the areas that are meant to be covered up are incredibly drab; compare an HRM inner frame to the MG Gundam X, for example, and remember that those details are meant to be covered up.
Also,
>possibly moot, considering how lazy Bandai's been with inner frame detail recently
The recent MGs have had a depressing lack of inner frame detail, and I acknowledge that HRM-levels of inner frame detail are possibly the best they'll get.
>>
>>6374198
Yeah, MGs don't even come with stickers. They do come with decals though (as expected). On the few MGs I've built, the only sticker I've got was the jewel or whatever that was from the God Gundam's torso thing.

You could also achieve more detail than a Full Mechanics and still use stickers, like with RGs (or at least the Sinanju, since it comes with a lot of shiny stickers and a bunch of white lines).
>>
>>6374198
Just to clarify, there's nothing wrong with stickers. They're even a big reason why Gunpla is so popular and accessible, being able to make cheap, screen-accurate models while also cutting down on engineering/production costs. But HRMs having sticker sheets is one factor that sets them and MGs apart.
>>
>>6374205
I like the foils that go on the inner frame, or the blue triangles on the legs.
The black/grey stickers shouldn't be a thing, really. They have texture lines on them, so they should be textured molded parts for you to panel line to get a similar and better effect.

I haven't build a 1/100 Barbatos, but the 1/100 Graze is excellent and at least comparable to early MGs. Not to say it couldn't be better. Being a bit cheaper shows in the fit of some parts (mainly the flip up head bit) not having the 100% micrometre accurate fit you'd expect on a modern MG and I wish it had a clear part for the camera, but it by no means just an upscaled HG.

So you go primer -> gray A that is slightly brighter -> gray B -> white? I guess the gray has a better covering ability, which is why you do this?

I don't have any greys that are brighter than the primer I use, but I can always mix it. Probably doesn't have to be that exakt as it's a step on the way and not the final finish.

Does it matter if I'm using an off white? I'm planning on using white mixed with sand/ivory to get something like the image.

From what I hear, inner frames have gotten simpler mostly because there just isn't much demand for detailed frames. Bandai's inner frame detail pretty much peaked around the release of MG Astray (remember when Bandai used to mold details inside the parts?), and then they just dropped off and started focusing more on articulation and making the outside look good instead.

It's sort of unfortunate, but it does make sense. Very few people ever bother to display the inner frame since it takes a ton of painting to make the details pop. May as well cater to the majority and focus on the parts people can actually see.

Yeah, make sure everything is lined up correctly, make sure you have the correct part, and this is kind of unorthodox and you're running the risk of breaking the part, but you can try and just force it in if you're sure it's lined up correctly and you have the right part.

I've already done that once, still wouldn't go in and stripped the shit out of the screw (won't come out now either, gonna have to go get something for that). I'm gonna try the blow dryer trick tomorrow. Probably should have done that in the first place.

Thank you, thank you

These are the markers I'm using. They're from Zeon, Basic, Real Touch and probably my the Advanced set, but I can't remember exactly.
I've got an old brush that I don't plan on using in future, so what I do is apply some marker, then dab it with the brush, or wipe with my finger.
Obviously the brown on the right gets the most use, and the real touch is great for adding dirt and grime (like under vents). White adds some highlights and also, if you leave it on a bit longer so it sets, can look like old paint that's started separating. Grey and black are almost exclusively for adding some tone here and there.
What really made it look good, I think, was panel lining with the black fine tip that comes with the basic set. Because it's so thick and basically a felt tip, you get a really nice finish and it makes the panels look like they're slightly separated, perfect for the rusty weathered look.

I reckon you could get a similar effect by applying colors to certain areas in thin layers, then giving a VERY light sanding with a 2000 grit sandpaper

What shipping did you select? Is it still within the planned delivery window? Amazon is usually pretty precise with that. You can also call your local post office (the one that usually delivers to you), give them your tracking number, and ask what's up.
>>
>>6375461
Yeah, that's pretty much what I usually do. The amount of sanding you do then decides how weathered it looks.
With the markers, I haven't primed so I can preserve the original colour. As a result, I gotta be REALLY careful when applying more layers so the first doesn't rub off.
It's quite fun, actually.

I can also confirm that the nice rusty colour comes from the Char Red marker in the Advanced set.

Don't do that. Don't defend lazy rip-offs. You're just enabling them to continue making shit-tier work and they'll never better themselves. Look at the MG DM Testament. Notice how that does everything it's supposed to? Sure there are a few design discrepancies but still. It does most of what it's actually copying. Same with the Deathscythe Hell TV. And I'm not even sure those things were even copied from any existing resin kits... And if they weren't copied from anything, it means they built those motherfuckers from scratch. Complete with features from the original MS. Yet motherfucking cutecube ripped theirs off from an existing resin kit but couldn't even be bothered to modify theirs properly to at least mimic the original? No. Fuck cutecube.

Anyone with eyes can see the Woundwort isn't a copy of the resin kit by Model Legends. They don't have the same style and some of the mechanisms are blatantly different even in photos, like the arms and opening cockpit. Even the proportions are very different, case in point the ML GK's crotch actually blocks the cockpit partially.

Also, the way mold making works is you 3D model the trees in CAD software and then have CAM software generate a toolpath for a CNC mill to carve a negative of the trees into two blocks of steel. You then put the molds into an injection molding machine, which injects plastic into the mold and you get the finished tree.

The fact that the model has to be modeled in CAD software, designed to be put together like a Bandai kit means that they literally made the thing from scratch. The only thing they could have taken from the ML resin kit is the likeness (which they didn't if you just look at the two) unless ML gave Cutecube the original files.

With Bandai bootlegs the Chinese used to straight up steal the molds and then copy them but you can't do that with a resin kit because even if you recreate a mold for a resin kit it'd be nothing like a plastic model, not even remotely.
>>
>>6376031
>This is CCube's first bootleg
Second bootleg. They released an equally awful Refined Barzam before. Albeit just a conversion kit, a bootleg is still a bootleg.
>>
>>6376018
Are you seriously getting on your soapbox over a chinese third party not being able to make a fully transforming Woundwart? What, do you think every single model kit company in the world is secretly Bandai? The Woundwart is a ridiculously intricate design with a transformation that can best be described as "what the fuck". No shit a third party kit of it isn't going to bother with that, that's why they're a third party.

>B-But's IT'S 1/100!!!!

And? What about this scale makes it so they have to make it transform perfectly? I've got a MG Victory on my desk right now that, for all of the effort Katoki put to it, still requires me to swap out the hands for new parts to properly transform the torso. And a much more reasonable comparison would be my 1/100 Victory, which is even jankier because Bandai's engineering wasn't as good back then.

If you don't want to buy the thing then that's fine, but there's no need to throw an autistic bitchfit over it. Third parties have never been and never will be better than Bandai engineering-wise, that's why they always go for style over substance.

Speaking of which:

>Look at the MG DM Testament. Notice how that does everything it's supposed to?
It doesn't. The Divine Striker does not properly unfold into a claw, and for that matter doesn't have a long enough subarm to even act as a claw in the first place.

>Same with the Deathscythe Hell TV.
Neither does this. The Twin Beam Scythe does not have a thruster on it, and the Active Cloak is missing the nozzles in the interior that actually make the Hyper Jammer function.

Please do the research before you go off on a rant next time.

Actually it's not that far off from the official RD version of the Testament. That one doesn't fully unfold into a claw either. As for the long enough sub-arm. You could just adjust it because it has mutiple peg holes. Also you can just add an extension peg. Here's a review of it:

I don't give a crap what the RD decided to do with it, that line always stylizes things too. There's official concept art of the Testament that explains how it works, and you can pretty clearly see that DM's Divine Striker's claws aren't nearly big enough or have enough reach.

As a side note, I just checked with my own DM Testament and they messed up the Trikeros Custom too. It's supposed to be able to fold up pretty evenly, like the Blitz's grappling claw, but DM exaggerated the shape of the claws.
>>
>>6376112
>There's official concept art of the Testament that explains how it works
Then again it is concept art after all. Maybe if bandai decides to release an official one they'll fix it. But for now, the RD is pretty close to canon.

>they messed up the Trikeros Custom too
>DM exaggerated the shape of the claws
This I gotta agree with you on. I hate what they did to the claws. It looks too "muh stylized gay edge". Not to mention it's smaller than how big it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be as big as half the legs and waist combined. Yet the DM one is as small as the entire arm...
>>
>>6376122

>you can pretty clearly see that DM's Divine Striker's claws aren't nearly big enough or have enough reach.
It's a design flaw. In the concept art you can see that the Divine Striker fangs fold inward-out to become a long enough claw. Instead what they did with the Robot Damashii & DM bootleg is they designed it to fold outward-in when it opens up, not to mention shortening the length of the fang's "neck". Thus diminishing the reach of the actual fangs in that specific mode.

This always bothered me. I know Katoki streamlined the nozzles when he redesigned the Deathscythe Hell, but at least they were still there. Meanwhile DM's Deathscythe straight up just doesn't have anything on the inside. Hell, considering they were showing off separating out the two halves of the cloak as projectiles or whatever, I'm not even sure if the designer realized what the Active Cloak was supposed to do.
