Koto has always been like that. I got one of the old phantasy star kits, and it had almost a complete second set of body, head, and limb parts. However, it was missing just a few pieces ( neck joint, shoulder joints, hip joint, faceplate), just enough to prevent you from getting 2 for 1.

Revell contacta is for PS only.

Tamiya ABS cement is the only hobby-brand ABS cement.

I've yet to test Tamiya ABS for seam welding, I'm deathly afraid of having to use hardware store-grade ABS cement (used for pipe welding) just do not have to color match the skintone to the face.

I don't know if you need a whole bath. Even a little 91% isopropyl alcohol should start removing most paints on contact. As far as I can tell, it won't damage the plastic either, or at least it takes a hell of a lot more alcohol to damage plastic than to remove paint. Either way though it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Make sure you re-prime though, even if the alcohol doesn't remove much of the primer.

Look for a local hobby store that sells Tamiya models and most likely they'll have a selection of paint brands and painting tools. Perhaps you may want to consult the plamo guide listed in the OP before deciding what paints and equipment (paintbrushes or airbrush) you will need.

Personally in my experience, handpainting is better suited to small models with rich detail like miniatures from Warhammer, Warmahordes, Infinity etc but airbrushing works better for large, flat, surfaces like vehicles and UC gunpla because it can evenly apply paint to flat surfaces

I'd suggest not trying to hand paint with Tamiya. Even with the retarder, brush strokes will show up very clearly.

And for hand painting in general, it takes for-fucking-ever to fully finish painting one color, and at least 3 days to finish curing it. Also, metallics look like shit for anything other than tiny details.

I just tried seam welding some spare ABS plastic parts I had lying around. With the Tamiya ABS cement.

The ABS cement seems to have similar ratio to regular plastic cement (11-15% sterol to 85% solvents).

I'm starting to feel anxious about it because the plastic beads on the seem start to look discolored.

Did I make a mistake testing the spare parts? Will the (flesh tone) ABS parts on FAGs be seam weld-able just with Tamiya Extra Thin (with no discoloration)?

That happens sometimes, usually when you don't let the cement sit long enough before pushing the pieces together. FAG skin plastic actually welds pretty well, the color is perfect for hiding imperfections it seems. Here are are a few of mine and I'm not even that good. Pardon the camera work as I couldn't be assed to whip out my tripod but it should work well enough. Left to right:

Stylet done with Testors, don't recall if it was the thick or extra thin then topcoated. This was the first kit I seamwelded and it still came out okay.

Hamburger: Tamiya thicc, topcoated. I kind of half-assed that one and it's still alright though not great. Had I pressed the parts together or sanded more it would look better. I might do some more sanding actually, that'd take care of that crevice at the top.

Innocentia: straight snapfit, no glue or topcoat. This time for sure, though I'll have to remind myself to clean whatever residue that is out of the seam before I try to glue anything.

So it can work decently all depending, but ultimately you'll have to just jump in and weld something, I too found that testing glue on trees wasn't as helpful as I'd like.

No, the Testors actually worked really well. I don't like their gloss coat at all or their flat coat especially well but if I was stuck using their glue forever I wouldn't particularly mind. The difference you're seeing is more user error than anything else; neither of those are ideal welding jobs but that's around what you can expect until you git gud.

Here's Hres again. That line is actually completely smooth so it darkened the plastic some. I've got a Gusion done with Testors and on that one the seam is lighter in color than the surrounding plastic. I don't know if that's due to the plastic or the glue as I haven't tested it the other way around though.

depends. Switching from armored mode girl A to armored mode girl B? easy peasy. Just swap heads, hands and chest.

Switching from unarmored mode girl A to armnored mode or unarmored mode girl B? A bit of a pain. the belly can be a bit stubborn to pop out, but is not too bad. The annoying part is that in the hips is a drum joint that is for some reason not just simply colored white but comes in flesh tone and black. That has to be swapped out which involves opening up the hips to get at it.

Now if you decide to keep largely just the black parts for the belly and drum joint, then IIRC swapping between girls and modes is very easy by just using the different colored limbs.

You can get the hips off with some finagaling without having to split them because they just hang there instead of being secured by anything. just be careful with the T joint since that's a known point of breakage.

Typical model putty (which has solvent) tends to not only shrink, but the solvent inside also tends to eat at the plastic underneath a little.

Means you not only have to pack in the putty real tight inside the seam, but also add it up in layers as it dries, and try to not be flush to the edges of the seam, but completely go past it so you can properly sand it flush to the rest of the surface.

Really? I was under the impression that grit and wet/dry are the only real differences for sandpaper. a 400# auto sandpaper is essentially the exact same thing as a 400# hobby sandpaper. The only difference is how much harder it is to find grits past 400 at Home Depot compared to hlj.

Mount smaller boosters on the back of each leg instead, and then put guns on the jetpack and use it as an assault drone.

From what I read of 3d printer folks' experiences, the only reason why some people here were able to "weld" the ABS plastic pieces on FAGs is because ABS plastic still has some blend of polystyrene in it, and the cement you use simply dissolved that component, but not the actual ABS plastic inside.
