What point does having the head partsform serve? It's not cool, you can't mash all the heads together into one giant head or something like that, you just have the head as a separate piece. The figures are not any better for having that gimmick, they'd be better off just having regular heads. Whereas combiners actually do something practical with their gimmick, they combine.

I got pic related today - perfectly fine for what it is. Nice desk toy to fiddle with, almost no functional articulation, small robots are unremarkable, combined robot looks really nice.

$15 is too much for these for what they do, though, but I get there's more parts and engineering that go into them to make the gimmick work.

Coming from The Headmasters animu lore, the Headmasters/Targetmasters etc themselves were tiny Cybertronians, they developed 'Transtector' bodies as a means to survive/fight without being impeded by their small size. So basically the heads are the real robot, the rest of the body is just a suit for them, also head-switching allowed for bullshit power-ups because plot.

So I'm one of the guys that doesn't like the headmaster gimmick. I have a few but all of them would've been better toys without it. Especially Galvatron. BUT the others were -masters in G1 so I knew what I was getting into and do my best to ignore it. Still sucks that Perceptor, Soundwave, and others couldn't get a good Classics toy before Gimmick Wars started and saddled them with the gimmick du juor.

Well, I didn't watch the airing of G1 during the 80's, but a certain Hispanic channel aired it in Spanish for me every morning as far as my memory serves (I was 4. Maybe 3.) Then Beast Wars aired on a channel before that one.

I didn't like Optimus Primal being a Gorilla since I thought Apes were hideous. But it grew on me years later with how chill some apes can be, and how maybe it was an indirect reference to Asian cultures fixation with apes and monkeys.

Power boost, but the downside is you've got a guy that basically controls if you get into robot mode or not, I could definitely see that being a reasonable option if you've got a partner you work well with. Targetmaster's barely suffered a downside, given their shit didn't impede their transformations at all, at worst you got shit like a gun that likes to pull it's own trigger.

Anyone have the Masterpiece Shockwave? How is he? I'm tempted to get him because he looks fucking cool, and his gun mode looks like a nintendo light gun. Is the stand part near the front in some pictures removable? Not a dealbreaker but it looks like it'd be weird when you hold it. Also, the tube that goes to his arm, is that at risk to pop off easily?

He's pretty nice. Articulation is a little spotty below the waist but he can do just about anything you'd expect a Shockwave to do. The only big issue with the mold is that his outward hip articulation is too weak for his weight, and you're almost guaranteed to need to tighten the joints with floor polish if you want to do spread leg poses.

Transformation is good. He's really nice in terms of engineering and creativity. Looks good in both modes. His unpainted surfaces look cheap as shit, though, and he's my least favorite MP because of it. I'm not a fan of his light piping, I would have preferred a yellow-painted eye. Sometimes his hip joints are loose. Might need a futureshine. I don't regret him, but he's probably got the hardest-hitting flaws of all the MPs I own.

I like G1, of course I enjoy later shows and toylines, but I like G1 for what it is. A cheesy fun show.

So I got this guy after throwing a low-ball offer on eBay. I've had the Hasbro version, and always thought it was the better of the two, but after both LG Brainstorm and Hardhead ended up winning me over, my curiosity got the best of me.

I have to say, despite wishing I could pick and choose a little from each, the Takara version is really awesome, despite being on that most seem to dismiss. His blue plastic is a much flatter color with no metallic flake or swirliness, which makes him look better, IMO.

While he's missing some paint apps the Hasbro one has, the ones he has are "smarter" so to speak. Like Hasbro has the toy-accurate paint on the biceps which adds a lot of nice detail to the arms, but this one uses the red pinstripe at the elbow and the blue hands and joints, which does a much better job of breaking the arms up instead of them being all gray, and makes them more dynamic overall. I also like his light gray plastic a lot, although the Hasbro version's isn't actually bad, the detail pops more on this.

I'm indifferent about the paint detailing around his chest. Looks weird until you get used to it, but I could take or leave it. The gunmetal gray on his feet goes a LONG way to making the entire lower half of the robot more interesting, though.

Took me a while to get used to his head. I was planning on just swapping the face of Hasbro Highbrow over, but it doesn't look right on this body, somehow. The silver face and bright blue visor on this one go much better with this deco, and with the other Takara bots, too. If Takara ever releases another Headmaster set with a Hasbro-style Highbrow head, I'll jump on it, though.

In copte mode is where he kinda loses out to Hasbro. The same light gray that looks nice in bot mode doesn't looks quite as nice here. The darker gray on Hasbro does a better job of looking like helicopter parts, I guess.

The lack of red stripes on the tail is a little weak, as is the Autobot badge, but this one makes up for it by having one on each wing, which is stylish, I guess. The worst bit is that the framework on the canopy is painted blue instead of gray, it really makes it seem bland, even if it is "cartoon accurate". I've thought about prying the cockpit apart and swapping them, but it's hard to do without damaging the pins/shafts. I suppose I could always just glue it back together.

And the added paint on the headmasters themselves is excellent. One of the biggest reasons I like the Takara versions. Makes them feel like actual little figures instead of just "unpainted partsforming" as the cool kids say.

I know it makes me sound like a Takaracuck, but I just wanted to offer a positive opinion on one of the more reviled Takara Legends releases so far.

Anybody know if there's any truth to the rumor that Walmart is basically forgoing any TR waves past 4 for movie shit? Debating waiting for them to stock or just sucking it up and paying the BBTS markup.

Drift got a couple of figures in the fourth TF movie line (though IIRC not a real proper triple changer figure as you basically had two different Drifts each turning into one of his two alt modes but neither turns into both alt modes) and a couple for RiD.

In general, movie Drift/RiD Drift (which is movie Drift) gets more figures because he's an INO version of comic Drift. Comic Drift DID get retooled as a slightly more tolerable character (he found religion/became less of a Mary Sue type) and got his comeuppence (basically got banished from the Lost Light as the fall guy for Prowl's Overlord debacle, in order to protect Hot Rod, who was in league with Prowl) but Hasbro has embargoed doing anything new figure-wise for IDW Drift, because of the backlash against him being pushed over other characters when he debuted. Movie Drift and RiD Drift get new stuff, but that's because of the INO factor and that Hasbro learned from their mistake with IDW Drift, meaning that they'd rather push the versions of the character that fans like as opposed to the version of the character fans hate.

All this Dorifuto talk got me wondering, what are the chances of the Origin Drift remold being released in the west?

minimize the amount of regurgitated characters, if you need a dinobot, make it swoop or sl/aeiou/g or make a new one, take the chance to really fleshout the ideas of some of the less well known characters, and make then look either quite inhuman, or cleanly human with detachable workstations that combine into a larger complex.

IF you do any big big bots, make them be ones that need to be updated, like the molds that got used for machine wars.

Combiner Wars wasn't even a bad line, its main issue was committing stupid mistake after stupid mistake and doubling down whenever there was a gap to do so.

Its bullshit, I turned it both possible ways and even in increments, the video in question must of had a "perfect" megatron, the damn peg inside is too tight and the connection scuffed the gun barrel upon removal.

I should of modified the silencer but no I trusted that video, while I stuff have a copy of the tutorial handy I see no point until I can get some paint to fix the scuffs, because its not just the silencer that causes damage but the damn clearance of the toy itself and how tight the transformation sections are.

I had to slap the gun barrel into place and the arms to form the butt and grip because autistic amounts of gentleness causes him to keep popping apart.

Just what in the fuck were they thinking, even mp10 was fun, intuitive and you wouldn't have any fears of damaging him with paint scuffs, only thing lacking is a more toon accurate deco and perhaps improved articulation.

I can't believe how much all the reviewers are hating on Steelbane.

I'm a huge sucker for beastformers, and Steelbane does so much right. A TON of articulation in both robot and beast modes, also a transformation that isn't just "the dragon stands up onto two legs".

Can't ignore all the crappy aspects of the figure in plain sight though. It just feels like a good design completely ruined by shitty production quality. I'm honestly just hoping for some 3rd party to KO the figure now. What has the world come to that we look to KOs as the gold standard of production value?

I've got one, he's not as good as people make him out to be to be honest. His transformation is like an attempt at Triggerhappy, but the backpack is a mess. The ginat chunky legs look great, but he has no heels, so you can't do much single foot poses. The turbines seem like they'd work, but they're molded into an A stance.
