Stiletto/Stylet complete. First off, not sure on which name is proper, and second, I would recommend never to pose a FAG much after painting. After adequate curing time, priming, careful moving, there was a lot of scratching going on during the photoshoot since the kit is so tight even after sanding connecting pieces. Still, it was fun to paint a girl figure, and definitely learned I should take it easy on where and how much shading I do on skin.

I got tired of sanding the sides of the faces smooth, so I tried a different cast setup and it's come out just how I like it. the risk with sanding is sometimes it exposes miniature bubbles and I just couldn't stand having any near the face even though the hair would cover them.

the molds aren't too complex. they're really just molded to cut where the face seams end, in case anyone wants to do the same. the pieces are pretty small too, so they don't use up too much silicone. I think I used up a total of 60-80ml's total for all 4.

It's less them being cliche, and more that they don't really have any history or backstories driving their behavior. That makes sense, given they're all newborns, but it makes them feel one dimensional and flat.

The shinki anime, in contrast, had characters who've been active for years, and the writers put thought into what they had been doing during that time, and how that would shape the people they became. That kind of depth is required to carry a slice of life show.

And that's really the difference. FA:Girls isn't really a slice of life anime - it's a gag show. Which one you wind up liking better will probably come down to which kind of show you prefer.

Back to work on the FAGs. Tried shading the skin using color pencils blended onto a matted surface like they do on doll face-ups. Pretty happy with the result.

Well, there's another idea for my experimental Innocentia. Maybe pastel instead but I'm not sure how much I trust myself with a brush. How'd you choose your colors though?

Had a 12 piece set lying around so I just did some trial and error from there.

I've found 2 main techniques : #1 Color on water - wet the surface slightly, then color into the puddle. This dilutes the pencil lead and allows you to cover a larger surface. You can also mix colors with more than one pencil.

#2 Dry color. Just draw directly. Soft coloring blends easier, hard lines stay a bit longer (great for butt folds) . Blend with a q tip, add a tiny bit of water if it's not blending enough.

If you f-up, just wash and clean everything off with a q tip. As long as you laid a good matte surfacer down anything can be fixed pretty easily.

This triggers me more than it should. Mecha Musume was never meant to literally mean "mechanical daughters" (just like Shinkis were never armored goddess princesses or whatever that actually translates to). It was just a sort of brand for Shimada's girls basically cosplaying with weird military themed gear/accessories. Mecha Shoujo predates and encompasses it but they're not interchangeable either, and neither simply means "robot girls".

If you really want a Mecha Musume General, Figma & AGP Strike Witches and Kantai Collection are the only toys that legitimately qualify. The rest of the lines in the op could get a pass for the stylistic overlap and it still wouldn't be home to every feminine robot toy out there.

The beauty of "Shinkis and Friends" was how it concisely kept the focus on the core concept that binds a handful of niche toys together with a respectful nod to the dead line that started it all.

What I love about this technique is that all you need are a matte surfacer (which you should have if you are building these), q tips and a small cheap box of color pencils. No airbrush, cleanup, dry time etc. And it's all easily removable.

Really excellent tutorial! I do recommend when using a matte spray, to give it 24 hours to let it "cure" fully. If you don't wait as long, it won't pick up the color as well. If you're only doing one coat, Dullcote is okay, but if you're working in layers, Dullcote is known to yellow, so Mr. Super Clear Flat/Matte is preferable. And Derwent Watercolor pencils are incredibly magical for this sort of thing.

I'm fine with mecha musume and busou shinki and friends. they both work fine in different ways.

Busou shinki and friends was a classic. its the original and pretty much describes what our focus was - a select niche of robot girls that fit a certain theme - not really "brand name" or a set character. Sure there was a cartoon, but it didn't define the individual shinkies. kinda like nameless little robot girls that you could build from scratch with, which was very different from like if sailor moon came out with an armor version or what gundam is now trying to do with their gundam girls. It was the ability to start from scratch that I felt we really enjoyed. It'd be a shame if we threw that away. FAG, MD, and DA, and Vlockers fit that mold, because they all stem from the busou shinki mold. Part of the appeal was also the niche status or "members only" sort of feeling - that you had to put in a certain evident level of effort to obtain a shinki or showcase a shinki so it became a hobby and not a passing whim. also, flesh tones was a must.

Mecha Musume General is fine too, but it's a compromise and will prob lead to future problems.

I didn't have sandpaper, but AnOn told that microfiber cloth could work.
At first it did nothing, but then suddenly it caused something that looks like it melt.
I put it all back together, but later I decided to try something again.
When disassembing, a corner of the part suddenly bend, though it bend right back it left a mark. Looks like the microfibering made that corner thinner.

That is the core of the reason why some seem concerned over a broad word like Mecha Musume. It's more then just girl figures/models with mech/vehicle stuff slapped on top of them like armor. One thing I noticed over the years is the number of people who collected Shinkis were also Transformers collectors, so perhaps there is an overlap in appeal with the armor aspect?

I wanted to get a Shinki to see what they were like, so I found what I thought was the cheapest one, and like a moron, bought it without further research. Now I have a box of Shinki parts and accessories and nothing to do with them.

Koto JP was honestly extremely helpful with the whole situation, I didn't have to pay shipping or anything. Unless you're from a country with crazy import limits and something like this happens, it should be pretty easy to get a new runner if the problem is on them.

I've built a near-armada of girls and haven't had anything else like that happen to me, closest thing was a piece that was kind of bent from being pulled out of the mold, but still attached to the runner.
