I bought one the other day. There wre the plastic ones in OP, and a nice looking metal one for like twice the price, $40 or something.

I went with the metal one thinking I was paying for quality.

A day later and I wish I'd just gone with the plastic one.

I have six autism shurikens in my arsenal so far and feel content with my collection for the moment

People are getting too worked up about them right now, they're just ball bearings with weights attached. They're not a hobby, you can't do tricks with them, and they're not a cure for ADHD, they're just something to fiddle with, which helps some people, but you could just spin a pen around if you really need that. They're toys.
>>

They're kind of moreish. You just keep spinning until you give yourself autism.

I work at a school for kids aged 6-13.

These things have taken over in the older classrooms, basically all kids 10-13 have one.

I'm thinking of getting one just to mess with the kids, pic related will be me when I show off my fidget spinner at work.

One of my coworkers got a 3D printer recently and made one of these, his kid took it to school and all the other kids wanted one so his kid started selling them and making a pretty decent buck.

I was thinking about buying a legit one, but playing with one of the spinners my coworker made I'm just not that impressed with them. I already have a $5 gyroscope I bought off Amazon that works so much better than these.

I work at a dollar store, kids come in all the time asking if we sell these.
Honestly, I'm surprised we don't. Only place I've seen them sold is at the flea market.

I fiddled with one and didn't get the attraction, you can't even do any tricks other than balancing it on a finger. If I need to fidget with something, I'll twist my ring around my finger.
>>
I found one in a parking lot when leaving work.

Why the hell is this shit more entertaining than it should be? I passed by a street stand selling these things like two weeks ago and didn't give a shit, but now that I got a freebie, I'm hooked.
>>
>>6332224

>>
>>6332350
If you work at a dollar store these likely cost too much for your store. Most of the ones I've seen at retail start at around $5.

>you can't even do any tricks other than balancing it on a finger
Well...you can, but some of them are pretty dumb and others require a stretch of the imagination as to what qualifies as a "trick."
>>
>>6332371
Some dollar stores now carry things that aren't just a dollar. An ex of mine worked at a place called "Dollar Store and More" and constantly got hassled by customers who wanted 30 dollar bed sets for a dollar.

You'd be surprised at some of the shit we sell, at least compared to the price at a normal store.

Japan more or less doesn't know what they are, or the point behind them.

There have been a few segments on TV talking about the "latest fad from America" where the general public reaction has been "so what are you supposed to do with it", "why is this supposed to be fun" and "ok it's spinning... is that it? I don't get it".
>>
>>6332527
I read stories online that this mother came up with it, didn't patent it and now is regretting not doing so.
>>
>>6332591
Did any of the TV segments mention what the intended purpose of them was? Like, the thing that's in the name? A substitute for fidgeting?
>>
>>6332585
It's the same hype that POGs, Tech Decks, Furbies, Tamagotchi, Silly Bandz, Rainbow Looms, bottle flipping, slime or any other kid fads have. Mostly the individual item doesn't matter, only the fact it's the hot and cool thing to have.

Complete clickbait. I acknowledge that people need to eat and sometimes it's hard to find a legit story, but for fucks sake.

Yeah, to which people just tilted their head in further confusion.

"Right, so it's used to fidget but like... what are you actually supposed to DO with it?"

I'm actually surprised no one drew analogies to spinning a pen since that's something that pretty much every Japanese person does when fidgeting.

pogs was a competitive game

yo-yos are a skill based toy with a whole bag of tricks

while there is some skill involved with fidget spinners, the point really is to mindlessly spin it in one hand while doing other things

The doragon one. Review pl0x
>>
>>6333100
>pogs was a competitive game
people bought them to collect them. almost nobody gave a fuck about the game.
>yo-yos are a skill based toy with a whole bag of tricks
very few people who owned yo-yos were even remotely good at it, though.
>>
>>6333107
Dude, what, for the first year everyone at my school played the game against each other. We all had "game decks" of pogs we didn't mind losing for those.
>>
>>6333122
the pogs game was about as """competitive""" as dice. there was nothing about it that required actual skill.

and for most people yo-yos were just something to fiddle with mindlessly, like fidget spinners. even the best kids at school could only do the most basic mongoloid 'round the world' type shit.
>>
>>6331577
I thought everyone learned this lesson through the Disney Store Star Wars Elite Series Actionfigures made out of fucking metal that loosen up their joints in seconds and scrape their paint in minutes.
>>
>>6333129
yoyos were popular because of the tricks. even if you sucked you still tried to do tricks. while i guess kids will try and do/make up tricks for literally anything, they are not the end goal of fidget spinners.
>>
>>6333107
Yes yes and very few people that actually own fidget spinners don't have autism or mental problems and just pretend to because it's currently the cool thing
>>
>>6333140
>yoyos were popular because of the tricks.

>>
>>6333146
>no, they were popular because they were "cool" and everyone had them.
More specifically because they were fun to play with. Noone actually put in the effort to improve, they just flung them around like retards. For all intents and purposes they were different than fidget spinners.
>>
>>6333154
>they were different than fidget spinners.
weren't*
>>
>>6332621
Probably because they own pen already and see no extra use in this thing.

Literally garbage sold to people that they will forget about in a few months or years.

Though I find it interesting how long the world had no such type of item specific fad. Pokemon Go kind of counts but what was the last toy fad? Beyblade? And that was a decade ago.
>>
>>6333146
nigga your post makes no sense

you say people didnt give a fuck about yoyo tricks when they were popular but then you literally also post a yoyo championship video from LAST YEAR. meaning that yoyo tricks are still popular enough to warrant sponsorships and competitions.

show me the fidget spinner competitions/skill demonstrations that are both sponsored and partially funded by fidget spinner manufacturers
>>
>>6333165
>you say people didnt give a fuck about yoyo tricks when they were popular but then you literally also post a yoyo championship video from LAST YEAR. meaning that yoyo tricks are still popular enough to warrant sponsorships and competitions.
the "skill" aspect of yo-yo was only popular among turbo autists. they weren't popular because of that. they were popular because they were fun to play with.

it can be compared to video games. sure, a small demographic of autists get ridiculously good at video games. but esports and speedrunning aren't why video games are popular.

>>
>>6334157
Proof?
Oh wait, there's none. It's a meme, you dip
>>
>>6334160
Explain to me why literally every item description on these stupid things mentions "helps with ADHD, anxiety, stress, autism etc." if it's just a meme.
Fidget toys in general are largely marketed to autistic people.
>>
>>6334166
Because chinese people thought it was true and everyone copies the descriptions from others. They also need as many keywords as possible to get visibility in search results
Also the fidget ADHD meme transitioned from the cube originally and at some point ADHD became autism. This doesn't even remotely help focus, the cube might.
>>
>>6334170
Fidgeting of all sorts helps autistic people. Maybe not focus like the ADHD kids, but it helps them not have a meltdown or keeping them from stimming in harmful or even more distracting ways.

But what's your deal? Don't want to admit you like something that autistic people like?

And where the fuck do these new trends come from and why is EVERY single one of them supposedly good for autism?
>>
>>6334257
>I collect transformers, I really don't need these nor do they stimulate me as much.
It's already been said in the thread, but...

Even if you have mental health issues, these aren't the same as toys or movies or videogames or whatever. Those things are fine and good, but they're meant to take your entire attention span, or at least most of it. Fidget spinners, cubes, etc. are meant to be something to idly do with your hands while trying to get other shit done. The idea is to fidget with these instead of doing something more annoying or self-destructive.

Do we have Palestinian rock throwers to thank for the fidget spinner?
The inventor of the ubiquitous stress-reducing toy says she came up with the idea during a trip to Israel in the 1980s, during the First Intifada, as a way to distract the “young boys throwing rocks at police officers.”
Catherine Hettinger told CNN Money last week that she first brainstormed the gadget while visiting her sister in Israel and hearing about the clashes between Palestinian youth and Israeli security.
She first considered designing a “soft rock that kids could throw,” according to CNN Money.
“It started as a way of promoting peace,” Hettinger said.
>>
>>6334331
>Do we have Palestinian rock throwers to thank for the fidget spinner?
No, because Hettinger has nothing to do with fidget spinners. Even by her own admission, her toy has virtually nothing in common with them. It's pretty much bad fact-checking and sensationalist journalism that's drawing any sort of connection between the two.

I've got aspergers. For people like me, fidget cubes, spinners, etc. are VERY helpful to us when we're stimming. When I heard about the fidget spinner, I was pretty excited. A silent, subtle fidget toy that doesn't make you look like an ass? Sign me up! Queue people who turn it into a trend. Now I can't get one without looking like a moron. Now people are spinning it on their heads, putting razor blades on it, etc. Reasonably, teachers and similar people are now taking them away. It pisses me off. I don't give a shit if a neurotypical uses them, it's not my job to police people- but I was under the impression that they were supposed to help people be less autistic, not help people be more autistic.

Was in class at school (EPME, I am not a kid) and our instructor had one on his desk and gave it to me to use during the day because he had us take personality tests and mine showed a need for stimulation. >>
>>6334970

Uh-huh. And how does that make you feel?
>>
>>6334279
>>6334279

Yeah this.

You see autism isn't just being socially awkward. The social awkwardness comes from the sensory integration dysfunction, and that's why people have such severely impaired ability to communicate, and the sensory overload causes meltdowns and all of it combined makes for a combination of really specific behavioral issues.

It's basically like having hangover hearing/sight literally all the time.

An autistic person's body will attempt to cope by constantly seeking deep pressure input stimulation. Rocking back and fourth, flapping their arms, standing on their tiptoes, and FIDGETING. In schools it can be very distracting to other students and self destructive and it is a sign that the person is uncomfortable in their own body and anxious. At worse they have meltdowns and act hysterical and violent and punch the shit out of themselves or other things in order to cope.

So the fidget toys are a way for autistic students to get more sensory stimuli to help them concentrate, lessen anxiety, and process senses better. It's not as effective as deep pressure input therapy and the psychiatric world is fucking dumb as a bag of bricks and needs to give every autistic people in schools weighted blankets instead of fidget spinners because fidget spinners aren't even close to enough stimulation, but it does help.

This is true for normies too. We rock our babies back and fourth to give them deep pressure input to calm them down, giving them deep pressure input. If anybody is nervous they will pace the room, fidget, chew their fingers, or get on the edge of hteir seats. Hell even animals are calmed by deep pressure input.

>>6335716

2/2

However for normal people they can process senses normally for the most part, and don't need as much deep pressure input and stimulation. But this brings me to the most important thing to understand why fidget spinners are so popular. They're literally the equivalent to chewing gum. Chewing gum is used to give your body stimulation in the say way as fidget spinners. That is why it's common for people on the autism spectrum to have oral fixations. One of the smaller specific signs of autism in early childhood is kids chewing on the collar of their shirt. They tend to chew their fingers and fingernails. It's a form of stimming.

Generally human beings are not designed to sit for an extended period of time. We were monkeys who used to have to exercise and hunt. Not sit at a desk all day. We don't get much stimulation and deep pressure input that we would normally get from day to day monkey business, so we need to get it somewhere.

Look how much regular people chew gum. It's a goddamn, common thing you buy in the stores.

Also autism has to be genetic mutation and people keep breeding carelessly and it's probably increasing a lot due to that too so...we're fucked
>>
>>6335720
I forgot my point was that spinners are like the hand equivalent to gum because both help you constantly stim and americans are fat as blimps and don't even give kids recess so they really need it nowadays.
>>
>>6335717
Yeah, it's a good thing they have that kind of school, you'd be lost in a normal school for sure.
>>
All but about three kids in my school are banned from having them. They're allowed for their 'ADHD', and must not pass them around the room.

The noise is irritating, they're toys and kids play with toys instead of doing any work. I've confiscated lots of them, I've still got one a kid forgot to come back after class for.
>>
I have been biting my nails for 19 years. I usually do it when i'm either nervous or bored. My fidget spinner is at least keeping me busy to prevent the nail-biting.
>>
>>6335723
Keep raging all you want, you won't change the truth, retarded kid.

>>
Oh it's a legit autistic toy?
>>
>>6335760
Autistic kids get more out of it, but that doesn't keep it from being a big fad with normal kids too.
>>
>>6335760
actually, that whole aspect of the things was essentially made up by a kickstarter for them a while back
>>
i have zero interest in it and today, for my birthday my nephew got me one because he's really into it at the moment.

i used to get him kamen rider toys because i love kamen rider, so he thinks he's bonding/returning the favor by sharing what he's into. I find the gesture very nice but I honestly still have no interest in these. I already twirl my pens when I'm thinking, these are actually less fun than that.
>>
>>6335766
No, that was the fidget cubes, not the spinners.
And autistic people are helped by fidgeting, the idea of a fidget toy for them isn't new at all.
>>
>>6335767
hold it in one hand and spin it with a spare finger while you're working on something, don't evenn pay attention to it, just let your hand sort of absent mindedly operate it.
you might be surprised
>>
>>6335759
Some don't have formal diagnoses, ADHD is a label seemingly given to anyone acting up. Anyone diagnosed with ADHD subsequently has every behavioural act attributed to it instead of asking whether individual incidents are an aspect of their ADHD, or if they're just choosing to be rude, as most teenage kids can be.
>>
>>6335781
So do you think the spinners actually help them or are they just using their disorder to get a toy in class?

>>6335788

Tangle to me always seemed like too big a contraption for an only okay fidget factor. It is cool that they still sell them, though! I saw one in my local tabletop shop last week.

Some other good fidget toys better than spinners imo that I shoved together in paint:

Steel Lynx Mobii: An infinite loop of smooth metal rings inside each other. So perfectly designed that you can roll the thing like it's a ball, and watch the rings cycle through each other to allow motion. Or you can roll it in your own hand, of course. Incredibly, incredibly satisfying.

Steel Lynx Chained: Also infinitely loops, and it involved smooth metal rings, but the main component is bike chain. Like, actual chain, that was repurposed in a workshop. I know, at least for me, that the feel of pressing your fingers into the cool, uneven surface of a bike chain is one of the best feelings you can get from randomly touching junk, and this lets you do that over and over forever. It's basically the popping bubble wrap of the metal-lover world.

Begleri: Chose a random image, because this can be anything. Originally based on the komboloi, greek prayer beads that doubled as worry beads, it became trendy in greece in the 60s to make modified komboloi called begleri, with less beads, strung on one string, so that you can perform tons of rad tricks on them. They can be flipped, infinitely looped, aerialed, sprung in unexpected directions using string tension, etc. They are truly the most versatile fidget toy out there for this reason - you can use them as worry beads, or you can practice an incredibly complex history of physics-defying tricks on them. Or anywhere in between. Great for anyone who complains that "fidget toys are useless and have no point!!" - this one does, you can get good at it.

I haven't seen any on any shelves because they're sold out everywhere; I don't get it personally but I can see why it's a big fad with kids. It's been crazy at work though; a month ago we started getting a call here and there asking about them, now people are constantly coming in and blowing up the phone asking if we've got any. On one of my days off we got one box of them in at work, just the standard ones in different colors, and they sold out within the day.

We also got some fidget cubes in stock, but they're in a bucket up front so there's not many of them. As far as fidgeting goes the fidget cube seems a lot more like they were made for helping with anxiety and stuff. I picked one up and I like it, it makes very satisfying click noises and the buttons side sound exactly like clicking a pen. It's got various ways to fidget on it so some are quiet and some are a little louder. We've tried suggesting it as an alternative, but the kids want nothing to do with them.

I assume after a few months it's gonna die out and there's going to be a ton of spinners on the shelf just sitting there, like with the big electronic Hatchimals.

>>
>>6335760

Autistic kids probably do get a kick out of them, as well as just regular kids, but no. It was started as just a well made fidget toy. The very early ones are made by machinists and they sell for a mint. Torqbars were going for $700 and higher not even 4 months ago. Some other makers were getting them churned out cheaper like the $200 price range. One of the more popular ones is actually a cigar stand. They are in the same vein as high end spinning tops. The original market for these was people with desk jobs and money to spare that wanted something to fidget with while on the phone or whatnot. I have quite a little collection myself of tops and spinners on my desk ranging from $20 up to $400 in value. Some guys I know have thousands of dollars worth. The really well made ones work crazy good. I'm talking tops that spin for 20 minutes easy.

Chinese started knocking them off a few months ago and suddenly they exploded within the last month. Now everyone and their brother has a fidget spinner. Funny because the community that even knew about them half a year ago was so freakign small and it was a high dollar hobby.

It's more fun to stop them yourself than it is to have them slow down on their own
>>
good lord most of you are completely misinterpreting the purpose of fidget toys in general

they exist so you no longer have to
>chew your nails/fingers off
>drop a million pencils
>lose your ring

fidgeting at work while thinking is pretty common
so fidget cubes/spinners exist solely to make fidgeting less disgusting and harmful
>>
>>6338599
>no longer have to chew your nails
Is this true?
I might have to get a meme spinner, I hate that I bite my nails.
>>
>>6338669
I don't know, but there's all sorts of super cheap ones you can get to see if it helps. You don't have to get one of the expensive ones.
>>
>>6331562
Fidget Spinner made ripple moon. its serious shit
>>
>>6335720
>>6335716
Oh wow this really makes sense. Maybe I'm literally autist. (I never had a compelling reason to get myself diagnosed and likely never will)
>>
>>6339023
Probably not though. Plenty of people like to fidget, that's perfectly normal.
>>
>bones reds +acetone bath
damn these have some good spin

any other bearings that are decently cheap with great spin properties when de-lubed?
>>
>>6340488
De-lubing bearings makes them spin longer? Can you tell me more about this? It doesn't make much sense to me just logically, so I'm curious how it works.

Basically I skate and I'm wondering if "de-lubing" is something I should do to the bearings I use on my board too.
>>
>>6341016

Do NOT delube your skateboard bearings. Too much dirt/grime/asphalt will make its way into the bearings and screw everything up.
>>
So I caved and bought one of the cheap generic spinners like in OP at the mall.
This thing is really fun to have at work and I'm considering buying a better one, but what I want to know is are the more expensive spinners really worth the extra money?
>>
>>6341055

No. Seriously, just be happy with what you have. It's not worth spending more money when you have something that works well enough especially just to fidget with. These toys are a fad.
>>
>>6335720
So, what you're saying is that people who fidget a lot are evolutionarily backwards and should be put in camps or at least sterilized? Governments could start regulating the sale of fidget toys to monitor which households need to be quarantined.
Could you imagine the bragging rights from being the first country to be officially autism free

You can just buy a cheapy one and replace the bearings with ones from a skate shop
>>

That's what people said about CDs when they came out, grandpa. Spinners are HERE to STAY.

Seems like more trouble than it's worth, considering you can get some really nice ones cheap. Like this one. You can get it various places including FidgetHQ for about 10 bucks, but it's buttery smooth and quiet and has the smaller r188 bearing for a longer spin time.

What is the appeal of these things and why will NOBODY shut up about them?
I work in gas station and I have had at least 100 people ask me if we sell them in just the last two weeks.
Do they dispense heroin or something?
Do they suck your dick?
What justifies the obsession?

>>6337896

People are fucking stupid and the market reflects that.

Yes and not original spinners are made of rare metals by russian designers
As all designers collectibles their niche is to buy it legit with all the bells and whistles like limited printing and auth papers.

The adhd and autism thing its a byproduct
>>
>>6343488
it's mainly kids in school saw their autistic classmates getting to use one in school, so they needed one too and it went from there until everybody had to have one so they didn't feel left out.

I saw a dude play with his at the donation center. Said he had some neural issue as an excuse to have one, idk.
I want to know if there are any that use other fidget toys as weights or at least have their designs, or if they have neat patterns that look cool while spinning?
>>
>>6343203
Get it, I hear those things are rad in hand.
>>
>>6344346
A lot of people add tritium to make their spinners glow and they look pretty cool.

Honestly, go check out Spin Space on facebook if youre really interested. People post a lot of quality hand-machined stuff and it's a good group of people, not cringy at all like one would imagine
>>
>>6344346
If he works at a donation center, he probably is legit autistic or something.

I have no idea why they of all things caught on, since there's a lot of fidget toys out there like pic related that aren't fads and never have been. But at this point, kids want them just because it's the cool and hot thing to have, it wouldn't matter if it was a freeze dried turd, they'll still pay up.

The writing style and abrupt, reaching topic shift make me want to slap her across the face. People have done stupid shit and followed stupid trends for ages. What about flagpole sitting? Goldfish swallowing? Marathon dancing? It sounds like the main reason she's got a stick up her ass about it is because someone in the little cube next to hers has a fidget spinner and she can hear a slight, quiet whirring, and she would rather try to start a moral panic than be bothered to put on a pair of headphones.

If a little toy prevents me from shredding off the ends of my hair or scraping the skin off my face when my hands have nothing better to do, what's her fucking problem with it and what the hell does it have to do with Donald Trump?

Holy fuck I think my IQ dropped just reading this article. This is horrible "journalism," rife with inaccuracies, assumptions, and REAL stretches of logic. I sincerely hope this bitter ass fuck loses her job over this.

It's incredibly laughable how she's not even talking about spinners anymore by the end, letting her piece trail off into a diatribe on Trump, which she then lamely tries to bring back on topic by finishing with a bad pun. Jesus christ man.
