Here's a new army men thread since there isn't any active ones. Lets hope that this one doesn't die really quickly.

FAQ: What are Army men/ Toy soldiers?
Army men/ Toy soldiers are usually generic plastic soldiers with no joints. The most popular versions are Vietnam men, WW2 men, And cowboy and Indians men. Most Army men are pretty cheap and you can just find them on Amazon or Toy soldiers depot.

We're currently in an army men bear market, the in-store trend is to stock sparsely or not at all and most of what they get is the cheapest crap. There's always online but it doesn't quite have the same thrill as poking through an out of the way dollar store and finding awesome stuff like pic related. Doesn't help either that most mom-and-pop dollar stores have been run out of business by the soulless quasi-monopolies dollar tree and dollarama.

Can only hope that someday there will be a reversal, a revival of cheap plastic warfare.

The one guys face has gotten smushed by constant removal of his helmet and I chewed he tip off of the one guys gun.
None of these guys had a pleasant expression. and the poses are weird.

I had a set of them as a kid, came with a space shuttle, rocket, couple other space accessories. Most of my originals are gone but I picked up a bunch more from ToySoldiersDepot, they have a 50-pack of the astronauts (what I got) and a couple sets with varying amounts of accessories (kinda want to get someday). Not sure how far back they go, I know Matchbox had the molds at one point as I have a mini version of one pose with Matchbox printed under the base.

Interesting site, thanks. Just a note on it, everything is at or around 1/72 scale, much smaller than the average army men which are typically between 1/32 and 1/35.

Speaking of 1/72 I picked up a couple more packs of this mixed-bag set I got from Dollarama back in winter, the main draws for me are the accessories which are far too large for the tiny soldiers packed with them, the jets are pretty neat too.

Really? Maybe thats a regional thing?
In Germany all the classical army men (the china ones) you can buy in bags in 1-euro-stores as well as the more expensive historical "correct" ones are 1/72. Bigger miniatures exist, but they are not that common here.
As a child i had probably several thousand soldiers and tons of tanks/vehicles, but all were around 1/72.

A lot of sets include a field gun or two, just a matter of seeking them out on amazon, browsing ebay for army men lots is another option. Buy actual fantasy minis from Reaper.

These are called Bones and they're probably more durable than your average modern toy soldier. They're rubbery and can be painted without priming them, but they do cost quite a bit more than your typical bag of minis... but look at them and dat detail!

They also selll certain figurines in a clear colored plastics, like fire elements being done in a transparent red or orange. Ghost too, in a limeish green clear plastic.

Scale standards with army men can be pretty loose, the standard tank one sees with a lot of plastic soldiers (M48 Patton) is about 1/48 scale, but packaged with troops at the 1/32-1/35 scale, in the end it's personal preference.
>>
>>6368904
Thanks but those prices are just too high for this kind of interest.
>>
>>6386223
Gotta agree with that, when I buy army men I want an actual army, paying a dollar or more per soldier is just too much.
>>
>>6386132
Still, saying what amounts to "oh, well you can buy much more expensive minis made exclusively for miniature gaming" isn't really all that helpful in a thread about buying green plastic army men, which are known for their low price point. If I wanted expensive miniatures for tabletop gaming, I'd buy expensive miniatures for tabletop gaming.

Also, scale might not matter to you, but that's not how everyone else feels about it. I personally think that tiny-ass tank next to those huge green guys looks completely retarded.

Mine are about normal-sized army men, I believe they were originally 1/72 scale Airfix poses but they also produced them in 1/32, they're unfortunately out of stock at this link but you get the idea.

http://www.toysoldiersdepot.com/store.php/thedustyloft/pd187251/132nd_scale_airfix_wwii_british_8th_army_plastic_soldiers_set_

Those red tommies go all the way back to when I was around 7 or 8 and were some of my first army men, they came matched with blue german infantry (also Airfix) but I'm quite certain mine were copies, very good quality ones mind you.

Over time I've picked up the odd few soldiers here and there of similar or same origin, always second-hand through flea market finds though.

I actually do have a little container somewhere with 1/72 versions of those guys, cheap copies but less generic at least.

Pic related are an interesting bunch, on the surface they're the same set of poses but on closer inspection there's some small differences such as the submachinegunner's Thompson no longer having a foregrip and the charging trooper's rifle has had it's bayonet blade removed (though not the handle). The other oddity about them is while I obtained most of them in bulk from somewhere I forget, a number of them were mixed in packages of cowboys and indians at an awesome and massive dollar store across town, same store where I got the 1/72 guys incidentally. Sadly they've since been taken over by Dollar Tree...

This thread is giving me a nice dose of nostalgia.

Even though this is more in the domain of /tg/, I recently ran a Dungeons & Dragons game and we used a hex map for the dungeon-crawling. Instead of using actual miniatures, we used a bunch of Army Men since I don't have any real minis but I do have a whole small toybox full of army men. Using a Dollar Tree bag of soldiers and some extra troops from a boxed playset, my players and I did the following....

>Green Army Men represented the player characters
>Tan Army Men represented monsters and enemy NPC's
>Gray Army Men represented friendly NPC's

Now I really want to run a tabletop RPG where the player characters are toy soldiers, sort of like Toy Story or the old Army Men video games for PS1.

I love playing with toy soldiers.

Those trees in particular were packaged with "updated" clones of Timmee Vietnam soldiers, I'd bought a ton of them once on the cheap, haven't seen them in any sets recently though. Over the years I've accumulated a fair amount of plastic forestry, mostly through army men buys, considering a bag of 30 or so soldiers might have a couple trees tops, it's a lot heh.

Random soldiers bump time. I found bags of these at a store called Blokker back when we lived in Brussels, there were green, grey and yellow and about a dozen of each per bag. Can't say I've ever found them in stores again, though I've gathered a number of green in slightly different scale from flea market buys.

They were originally an Airfix set made in 1/72 scale, I have one somewhere with my 1/72 stuff. These guys were upscaled and a lot of the details were lost along the way, they also dropped a couple crawling poses from the originals and they're slightly smaller than average army men. I remember being so thrilled though when I first bought them, the poses include many firing guys and they were obviously meant to be commandos of some kind (US paratroopers actually), they were my go-to guys for dangerous missions behind enemy lines.

Here's some of the mixed bag of green commandos, some being around the same size, others a bit bigger, some less detailed and some more so. The one guy holding a "drummer baton" had an entrenching tool in the original 1/72 set, I suppose it can pass as a crude club for silent takedowns.

As for favorite troops, it's more difficult to single out any individual army as there's so many that stand out above the rest. The Timmee Vietnam series and its variants is an easy contender, as are WW2 American GIs, Japanese infantry, British tommies... But I think I'll give special mention to Germany's Afrika Korps (seen here >>6349351 and >>6386944) for the excellent selection of fighting stances, an actual loader for the machinegunner and a badass Rommel pose.

Pic related are some of the runners-up, an anon made this edit some time ago and I still find it funny as hell.

Most of my better soldiers were obtained in the first half of my life when they were more widely available in stores, a golden age of sorts for army men looking back on it. Nowadays if you want something better than the basic oft-copied dollar store troops it's usually online or bust, or if you're lucky a nice mixed bag from a thrift store/flea market/craigslist/kijiji/garage sale etc.

Some of my very first army men came with a couple of the smaller anti-tank guns at the top back, the one with a little Union Jack sticker notably. That was all the way back in the early 90s in Belgium, haven't seen that particular set since. Usually when there's artillery included it's those dual-purpose brown guns that can be anti-tank, anti-aircraft or even howitzers but even those are uncommon these days.

>>6415353
>flag mix-up between the two upper armies

These are partial clones of an assortment that's been around a while, with (clockwise from top left) British Highlanders, German Afrika Korps, Japanese infantry and US GIs. I say partial as some of the poses, particularly the GIs have been modified some and the Germans have an extra pose of a soldier with shouldered rifle who is actually a modern infantryman but apparently tossed in cuz of the similar helmet (see here >>6399492 top left at the very back).

As the other anon said the main concern is quality, they seem to be like those soldiers I have with some slightly flattened poses, but the price is pretty good for ~200 troops, I might have to get some myself for the variations and new colors.

And yes, bagpipes.

That's unfortunate about the plastic quality, I hope they've resolved it by now. Back in 1995 when Toy Story came out I got the original Bucket-o-Soldiers, with the classic TimMee guys instead of the new color and poses of the more recent re-issue. I'm not sure anymore which of my soldiers they were but I believe at least some of these guys are them, if I hadn't packed them away again I'd check for the paratrooper guys, back in the day the parachutes got ruined through rough play so I just cut the rings off the soldiers' heads and made them regular infantry with the rest.

For that reason I haven't even opened up the four paras in my two re-issue buckets heh.

Now I don't mean to sound like those nerds who are my age and say "I was born in the wrong generation!", but they really don't make toy soldiers like they used to. Name 1 toy soldier set that isn't a model that comes with medics, dogs, and soldiers in good marching poses. There's so much detail on these guys too! The medics have crosses on their helmets, the dog has some pouches, and the guy on the stretcher is wearing casts.

I've considered doing some wargaming with Army Men instead of miniatures. There's several different free rules sets for these type of games.

Thor Trains's Army Men homepage has a treasure trove of free wargaming rules for Army Men

I do have a question. Did anyone ever make Army Men versions of Pilgrims/Colonists? I mean, I've seen Army Men of all types from the Vietnam/Modern style stuff you find at the Dollar Tree to World War Ii and Cowboys and Indians, to even more obscure stuff such as Medieval, Vikings, Pirates, Romans, Ninjas & Samurai, Cavemen, Fantasy, American Revolution, Civil War, etc.

But I'm wondering if anyone ever made little plastic figures of the English Colonists? Pilgrims, Puritans, Jamestown settlers, doesn't matter. If I could find something like that, it would be awesome.

If someone did make such a set, it would probably come with Indians as well. I mean, if they made American Revolution figures back in the day, it's not that far of a stretch to assume they made Pilgrims/Jamestown Colonist figures.

At the very least they might be able to point you in the right direction.

I feel like i'm really close to getting what this is about, but I'd still like for someone to explain it to me.

There were already videogames when I was born so that's where I expend all my childhood at. I bought maybe 1 or 2 army men bags as a kid, but I got bored of them pretty fast.
Right now i'm thinking that these could be really cool to setup some sort of RTS or T-RPG like game but IRL.

Idk, what ARE these supposed to be used for?

I'm not opposed to the idea, I just remember how as a kid it would bother me that they all had fixed poses and how weird it was to try and imagine them moving around. Tho maybe you can use different models to simulate different stances?

I mean, it never occurred to me as a kid, but then again I am an adult thinking that playing with toy soldiers will be fun, so I should probably not think i'm overly clever either.

There's Army Men RTS on GoG if you need more structure. All the novelty of army men in video game form.

>Y-you mean I have to imagine whatever is going and take it easy?
Yup. I usually just divide points of my house up into territories based on the various colors of army men I have and make them fight each other for strategic points and the like. I like to think of them as having some level of self-awareness, as in they understand the world around them is huge and refer to objects as they really are rather than pretending that couches and tables are mountains and the like.
>>
>>6419316
>>6419316

Holy Crap! I did the same thing! Divided the house up into "Macro Points" but then subdivided into smaller "victory points" like

+10 Toaster captured and destroyed
+10 Fruit Bowl reached and defended
+50 Stove Top torture device captured
+60 Coffee maker converted to energy source

Stuff like that. Speaking of which, I need to get to Toys R Us to get a new "Bucket O Soliders...." I really..really which they'd make this level of quality but in other colors...

And yea the Army Men RTS game is loads of fun and has some great inspiration.

Haha yeah, it really isn't a big deal though. I would like to do some grander scale setups but outside just doesn't work and there isn't anywhere in the house right now that's any better. Before it became a bit of a storage area there was decent floor space in the room across the hall, had a number of fun setups there including the circus train raid that's popped up a couple times, and pic related. Would be nice to reclaim it again, I'll look into it.

Can blame the Toy Story movies themselves for that I guess, theirs is a world that doesn't need racially motivated plastic warfare it seems.

While we're nitpicking, these guys are lacking a machine-gunner pose, a glaring omission as they're provided with mortars and bazookas, I feel like I'd have to attach a machine-gun unit to get the best out of them. They also nixed the flamethrower, war just gets a little too unfriendly when those psychopaths are tearing up the battlefield eh.

>>6420860
That chopper's been tempting me for a while but I haven't been able to justify the cost. I bet they're blue to represent marines, I'd hate to guess what the pink soldiers they also sell are supposed to be though.

And yea, The machine gunner I can put up with..but the flame thrower was the first thing I noticed missing, literally seconds after I cracked open my bucket.

They're unfortunate omissions for sure. My solution would be to send them and this other unit into battle together, the former have the heavy weapons while the latter provide machine-guns, grenadiers and those all-important flamethrowers.

My armies aren't strictly governed by color-based factions, indeed I have several units that are mixed, largely because they are most effective that way. Many armies go by the historical troops they represent, but by and large the tans still end up the bad guys most of the time anyway heh.

My system of organization requires a unit to be at least squad-sized but generally speaking a platoon of up to two dozen is the standard minimum. Several times I've bought bags of mixed soldiers who would not meet these guidelines if they were separated by color so they've remained as a single formation.

Pic is pretty typical, they could be split into two companies of 60 men but the pose assortment is unequal, one would have most of the bazookas and light machine guns. I think the fact that my very first army men were red British versus blue Germans had something to do with my "progressive" integrated views heh, the green vs tan school of thought didn't get on my horizon until much later.

Some years ago I got the idea to organize my various armies, each would have designated officers and a sheet detailing their troop types. Pic is an example, these being the contents of two Bucket-o-Soldiers organized into a battalion (in my system a battalion is roughly 80 to 200 men, and can be commanded by either a colonel on the lower numbers side or as high as a lieutenant general). Vehicles, armor, artillery etc. will be assigned as required, with some units being particularly equipped toward motorized/mechanized warfare. Others might be best suited to airborne operations, garrison duty, ambushes, having these sheets makes it easy to figure this out in advance.

Not that I've gotten much practical use out of it all... but I enjoy organizing stuff so there's that at least, heh.

I wonder if any of you will indulge me. I've been lurking /toys for many months and came across this specific thread and was wondering a few things.

I was thinking about creating a line of these figs w/custom sculpts and such. The problem is the cost is prohibitive to start so i'm trying to get a rough gauge on if anyone even gives a shit.

1) What size figures would you guys want to see? (1", 2", 3" etc...)
2) Are you interested in cutomizeable figures?
3) Are you interested in single color units and/or painted?
4) Are you interested in poseable figs?
5) What sorts of sets would you want to see?
6) Are you interested in these figures because they're cheap only or would you want to see higher quality figures? If so, what is the upper limit (per fig) you'd be willing to pay... I mean if the quality is good.

Thanks if anyone answers. I don't want to start into this only to find out nobody gives a fuck and i've just blown away who knows how many months and thousands of dollars on this idea.
>>
>>6424536
1. Most army men are 1/35 scale or two inches
2. Not really.
3. Single colored.
4. Not really.
5. Probably Rome era/cold war sets
6. I personally prefer cheaper figures
>>
>>6424536
1_dunno about inches, but about 7cm
2_Seems like it would make them a bit too complicated (and thus expensive)
3_single colour, you can paint them yourself
4_Yes, tho again bear in mind price.
5_Anything from Late middle ages to WW1 is cool for me
6_I'd rather them be cheap, not more than 1$ a figure. That's why you bulk buy them in buckets or packs of a couple dozen or so.
>>
Thanks for the replies guys, I was trying to see if there was any interest in higher quality figures.

As it stands the main issue is cost and production. 99.999% of these figures will be produced in China, so I cannot compete with them on that basis.

My idea was mainly to produce things domestically, but again that would increase cost and nullify the value proposition since you guys are interested mainly in the cheaper bucket based figs.

I'll have to rethink this idea entirely. I really appreciate the feedback. Just seemed like a really cool idea, albeit with most things they work on paper really well but from a business point of view they fall apart quick.
>>
>>6424875
Only 2 of us have answered so far, but the fact that these are so cheap is definitely part of the appeal. There are other figurine markets that are willing to pay more tho, people who play tabletop wargaming for example are willing to pay quite a bit more for their figurines to be really high quality.
>>
>>6424880
Yeah I was wondering that. But GW and Warhammer shit is super expensive and i've never been able to get into it. That said there are still a lot of players, i'm just not sure how many are still keeping up with GW's bullshit and their pricing or if demand is slowing.

I just need to know that if I dump a year or two into something and spend the money up front that there's a market for what i'm trying to produce. The sad part of business is that I could dump all I have into something, but unless people buy it, it's a waste of time.

That said, i'd like to produce some higher quality, slightly larger figures more for collectors to display and maybe a separate line of smaller figs 1" or 2" for table top gaming. But higher quality. I think i'd aim for a 2.50+ for the 2" figs and maybe a line of 4-5" figs at 10-20 each but display quality with all kinds of other shit included and optionable.

Not sure who'd be interested though. I do very much appreciate the responses though.

Cheap for the most, that's why I gravitate towards army men. More $1 would be unreasonable if we are talking about mass produced army men quality.

Not so much specific eras or factions but sets that include vehicles, artillery, terrain, accessories
>6) Are you interested in these figures because they're cheap only or would you want to see higher quality figures? If so, what is the upper limit (per fig) you'd be willing to pay... I mean if the quality is good.
A balance between quality and cost is the ideal, there's a number of sets online like described above but they generally suffer from quality bugs that make them not worth their typical cost.

My favorite army men sets were the ones that had two or three different flavors of soldier (differentiated by color and faction), vehicles for each, cannons, some bunkers and barbed wire, maybe even little plastic or cardboard buildings, and of course flags for each army. They tended to be decently priced at the time, can still find some nowadays but they're more expensive as they're more rare leftovers from those years than newly made.

Most of the stuff on amazon is varying degrees of mediocrity and/or is priced too high for what you get (looking at you TimMee). >>6426122
TRU here (if they have anything at all) tends to have one overpriced tub of the green and tan modified Vietnam poses with admittedly a decent assortment of extras but I don't find it's worthwhile compared to what I've found in the past. Walmarts here haven't carried army men for a couple years now that I've seen, the only places they show up in these parts are the Dollar Trees and Dollaramas, and they're mostly crap.

>that tank 3-pack

Couple of things, they're $18 USD which is laughably overpriced for what they are, I already have plenty of those anyway (even sold off some a couple years ago). The other thing is the American listing doesn't ship here (Canada) and the Canadian listing well... I'll let the link speak for itself.

Walmart has their Corps! Elite bucket. The two tan soldiers up front.

Those are the ones I had! Those are awesome! Surprising amount of detail and consistency between pieces, no melted guys out of the box.

I hope they make some sort of expansion or new sets. Those are wicked good!

It would be nice to see some more variety from that line. The art had some female characters. I can't think of any toy soldier lines out there including women.
For other non-50's and 60's soldiers, Target has had some great futuristic stuff over the years. I'll see if I can dig out some photos later today.

Totally, would be rad to see more variety. That's part of what i'm after and want to make my own line of these damn things. It takes months to make the figures though and molding and shit but I could do whatever I wanted.

I got those guys in green and white (>>6421630), they came packaged with some really neat stuff like a fortress artillery piece, Hawk missile battery, various accessories, terrain pieces... It was a one-time find at the liquidation center, wish they'd get in more stuff like that but the only army men stuff they've had lately are these little buckets with a mixture of really cheaply made action figure soldiers, a few army men, some small vehicles and more or less random bits.

They're japanese infantry, those particular men are often packaged with Americans, British and Germans in large containers, can also find the armies individually sometimes.

The ones linked here >>6415353 are an example, I don't have those specific ones but similar.
