For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

For scribing, you can start with a needle not even a chisel. 0.2-0.3mm is probably the most useful size for regular panel lines.

For chiseling out material, 1.0-1.5mm would cover 80% of your needs.

Nowadays ehh, but for old kits, 3rd party, and garage kits definitely. Those kits often have mold release agent still on the runners/parts, and this agent keeps paint from sticking well. Though it's really easier to just wash the parts after removing them from the runner by throwing them in an ultrasonic cleaner or something.

Nowadays it's not that much of an issue due to Bandai's constant improvement in injection-molding tech, but it's really a good habit to get into.
>>
>>6296293
According to Wookieedia, Grievous's height is 2.16 meters. At 1/12 scale that actually comes out to 18cm even, which means he's MG-sized.

Still, kinda pricey for the lack of option parts, but if Bandai sticks with the level of detail they have in these renders, it's going to be a pretty nice kit.

revel has nothing to do with the figure kits

that's kotobukiya's fault for finding a loophole in licensing and making their statues "build a figures" that you must assemble since they come in separate in the box "Oooooh it's a building kit because you have to pop the arm into the torso!"

Nah, the only metal parts in this are pins. I don't know how similar the old kit is, but this one's looking pretty good already with just panel lining, so I wouldn't worry too much.

That said, I keep pushing kits back because I'm afraid of messing them up, so I get it.

>>
>>6296291
Kind of a waste of water really since you would still be handling the pieces with your fingers leaving behind oil and Cheeto dust. Wash them after assembly then handle with gloves when painting until the end.
>>
>>6296643
Oh, whoops! Completely forgot about the newer models. I was actually thinking about this old series of kits http://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1021288332 which are surprisingly hard to find information on in English.

I have Roy's VF-1S, but it's basically the same as that; a traditional model kit molded in one-color and with metal detail parts, but with the ability to transform between Valk/Gerwalk/Battroid modes. I didn't realize it was like that until it was delivered, so now it sits in the backlog until I get confident.

I notice that most people who paint their gunpla tend to paint their inner frames and joints up in gunmetal. Bandai does make a really nice gunmetal plastic (in fact, it's so nice I sometimes don't even bother painting when they use it). My question is, why don't they use this stuff more often for internal frames and mechanical parts? Is there actually anyone who likes the drab grey they use instead?

Y'know...after owning Lego Grievous for a while now, I think I got too used to his "heroic" dynamic proportions. The actual Grievous design just looks scrawny and underfed to me now, in a bad way. Instead of looking cool-creepy-skeletal, he looks like a 98 pound weakling who would get beaten up by the Lego version.

So just to confirm before I start my first paint job, the order is:
- clean
- panel line
- prime
- paint
- topcoat
Yes?

Also, for a rust effect, would it be a good idea to use actual flakes of rust in the paint or would that be stupid?
>>
>>6296780
that is indeed a dumb idea. there's no telling how that might react or further deteriorate over time. learn how to weather and do rust effects the old fashioned way: through skill and practice.
>>
I'm building the 1/100 Tieren right now, and holy fuck, how did they do such a good job? The amount of sculpted detail to pick out with paint or ink....the rough textures on some parts....it's just great. I wasn't happy with a lot of kits from this era so I'm pleased at how good this one is.
>>
>>6296771
Metallic nubs are way worse than drab coloured nubs
>>
>>6296780
You should do panel-lining/ add waterslide decals after painting. Assuming you're painting parts completely rather than just touching up details, the order would be more along the lines of:
-clean
-prime
-paint
-gloss coat
-panel line/decals
-topcoat

>>6296365
Me2 I fucking hate these new blockbot hands so goddamn much, totally detract from the rest of the kit. At least they offer a builders parts set with better hands
>>
>>6296604
it is still mightily suspicious when Disney only ever does this for specific lines. They don't care about bandai or anyone else selling the action figures, but they raise a fit about the models? Deadpool got some crazy blockage when released initially but for some reason seems like the reissue fixed that.

I mean it IS possible Disney lawyers acted without imput from Revel, they might have saw how Revel is struggling and decided to try and protect Disney domestic interests by eliminating any of that competition the holder of their license. But it is still odd that Disney never laid out much broader blocks.

We probably will never know for sure what is going on unless someone pulls a sony email leak level of leak on dinsey. The comapnies say what they want to save their public images, you can never take their words with complete faith.
>>
>>6296288
is this even a model kit from bandai? it looks like a toy
>>
>>6296971
probably because they appear to be going for the Clone Wars look so he looks more 'toylike' versus a model kit due to having a style that is cartoony

The arms and hands are a clear indicator he is definitely a model kit.
>>
>>6296771
I still use a drab grey because I think the gunmetal frame looks incredibly tacky. I'd rather a metallic armor rather than metallic frame, especially if it were real, why would you have such a shiny frame? You don't see cars have shiny ass internals and a matte body or both being metallic. Call me weird, but I also don't like all variety the colors people use in frames either too. Like I can't imagine that a scaled up part of a frame is randomly some copper or silver color. I can only appreciate it as a work of effort and in an artistic way if they're throwing any realism out the window.
>>
>>6296985
good, im not an actual stw fans but i realy like they mechs, and also bandais model kits, so this starwars line is actualy realy good

How do proportions differ between IBO HG and 1/100?
>>
>>6296987

I might be an oddball too. I like flat metal for the inner frame.
>>
>>6297020

It depends on each pair of models, but 1/100 IBO are usually bulkier most of the time, which can be either good or bad.

The most distinct pair is that of Barbatos lupus rexes. Ironically, the HG has a bulkier pair of arms which doesn't go along with the body, so the 1/100 turns out to be better, ironically.

If you want a matte finish should you still use a gloss coat in between painting and panel lining? Or were you just using a gloss coat as an example? Ive heard this somewhere before and wasn't sure if there were benefits to doing this.
>>
>>6297206

It's very hard to do decent panel lining (by pen or wash) without gloss coating first.
>>
>>6297206
the only time you may panel line before a gloss coat is on bare plastic. the surface must be smooth and glossy in order to have effective application of your lines. otherwise there is risk of them bleeding outside of the lines more easily and being much harder to clean off versus a glossy surface.

I do not know about glossy paints, but personally I would still apply a gloss coat first before panel lining. That is because of the second reason you gloss coat in between, the clear coat lets you more easily fix mistakes without affecting the previous layer of paint.

Not sure if you are familiar with the character then. He is a cyborg trained to not only fight against Jedi in melee on even ground, but be able to engage multiple Jedi.

Not sure from those images but it could be possible the model kit has some internal compartment that can be opened to reveal the few organic bits he has left. You can also see flesh around his eyes under the mask in those images.

Just some trivia about him if you werent familiar about the character and got him and noticed the fleshy face just barely noticable under the mask.
>>
>>6296333
That's not what happened dipshit. BANDAI was unknowingly breaking thier license agreement with Disney JAPAN. Disney has territories. You have to pay the different branches their own fees to sell in their territory. HLJ, AMIAMI, etc selling to the world meant Bandai was getting around having to give each Disney branch their fee.

It was literally Disney being a jew. Cunt.

Got a question.
Usually painting flow is Sand > Base > Paint > Optional topcoat
Correct?

However, I'm trying to paint these Little Armory guns and they're too small to sand properly.
Would it be ok if I just spray the base on them? Or should I just try my best to sand whatever I can?
Mostly concerned about the paint coming off later due to insufficient grip.

dude, would you rather your resin dust be widely dispersed? if you are sanding resin you do NOT want the air to circulate

that said, if you are dry sanding resin without respirator and relying on air circulation to protect you somehow, you fully deserve what's coming to you

you can still breathe in plenty of resin dust sanding outside btw
>>
>>6298847
No, I have a respirator and wet sanded, I just don't want that shit stuck in my room.
>>
>>6298850
>don't want that shit stuck in my room
if it gets airborne, some of it is staying in your room whether you like it or not, no amount of "circulation" will help you
>>
>>6298858
Good thing I went outside exactly because of that, then.
I just want to know if that shit is dangerous when we're not talking particles from sanding or whatever. That was my question.

Yahoo Japan Auction. When browsing items there's a banner at the top which says you can bid on them through their Buyee service.
I bought a SPEC Eva through Buyee this week. Besides the actual ammount you bid (in my case 2500 yen) there's a Service Fee (150 yen), a Payment Fee (200 yen) and optional insurance (500 yen to check the stuff you bought on YJA is what they receive) which I opted out of since poorfag. Then when they get the item you can choose shipping method which is similar in cost to HLJ and Amiami. I'll choose SAL since again, poorfag.
I'd recommend it, prices can be great and it's quite simple to use. The other YJA middleman service I tried to buy through was Samurai Buyer, they also offer to buy from Rakuten stores, but checking their fees it wasn't as convenient

Yeah, I dunno about that. Most B&Ns I've been to have REALLY shit models on display. No panel lines, bad nubs/scarring, crooked stickers, etc. Are you telling me Bluefin just randomly decided to bless this one B&N with a topcoated, trimmed, panel-lined, properly stickered, competent Gunpla?

Not to mention, I would expect that Bluefin employees might actually know a thing or two about their products (ie, I don't think they would do such shit builds). It seems FAR more likely that clueless B&N employees are building them really shittily because they have no modeling knowledge whatsoever.

Paint question:

I'm hesitant to buy a can/bottle of Tamiya paint just for a one-off, but how can I replicate the pale(ish) brass color of Tamiya Titanium Gold/Titanium Silver/Champagne Gold with Vallejo acrylics?

Is it chrome/silver then bronze/light brass, or do you layer some sort of combination of transparent yellow and transparent blue(preshade?) onto the silvery layer?
>>
Are there no small cans of yellow or mustard acrylic? seems I can only find lacquer
>>
>>6299525
It's like six or seven bucks, just fucking buy it. Tamiya paint is really nice, it's some of the most durable in the biz, and why waste time and effort and paint trying to colormatch when you could buy a damn rattlecan for $7?
>>
Now for something that might be unheard of:

How does layering a clear pearl coat on top of metallic paint look like? Do you get an interference effect when the surface is tilted?
>>
Fully armed Hamburger is such a clusterfuck.
I love it.

I definitely need to tinker with this backpack/exoskeleton some though, I'm sure there's a ton of fun to be had outside of the stock configurations.
>>
>>6299525
Alright, so you are asking about spray cans and then color matching with Vallejo?

Let me guess, you are hand painting? If so, just buy the spray can. Handpainting metallics in general is not nearly as nice looking as wheen they are sprayed on, I did have some decent success with Vallejo but it was very hit or miss and eveen when it hit, not as nice as it coul have been from spray. Second issue is trying color match the vallejo metallics from my experience was a pain in the ass. Never came out right at all.
>>
>>6299919
Vallejo metallics are kinda crap, have a Silver bottle and it's just junk.
>>
>>6299934
GW metal colors are the best probably.
>>
>>6299943
VMA metallics, Vallejo Metal Colour and Vallejo Liquid Metal are all better than GW metals.
>>
>>6299919

I'd never do anything except small details or drybrushing with the standard vallejo metallics if i were to do it by hand.

Somewhat related to the topic, are they (the normal game/model colour metallics) decent for airbrushing once adequately thinned or should I just never put them in it? I don't think I have heard anything good about them.

The metallic colour line seems decent though, for being acrylic metallics.

my experience is with handpainting and spray cans only. I found hand painting Vallejo was the most likely to look passable and not complete shit, while the others I tried just wouldn't work at all. But again, that is passable so spray is advised instead.

Yes and no. There *are* Armored Core kits, but they are Kotobukiya so re-editions, when they happen, are limited and far-between. There's a few ACV/VD kits and a whole bunch of AC4/4A kits, but AC3 kits are impossible to find.

Also, Kotobukiya, so more complex and expensive than bandai plamo. Painting required.

like I said 'could likely be', I know full well what the original official comments were an in no way did they say anything SUPER concrete as a hint.

Bascaly they said 3 new games being worked on, one is ENTIRELY new, one was a return from an older franchise and don't recall if they left the third unsaid or what but pretty obvious that would be a souls type of game if not a new souls. The return to an old franchise is the one most commonly beleived to be a reference to a new AC.

I have an airbrush.

Tamiya's pearl clear and pearl white come only in their spraycans. The titaniums/golds are offered in their acrylic bottle line.

As for the brass look and Vallejo, I was gonna ask /tg/ if anyone tried Reaper's Dragon Brass paint.

Ideally I'd kind of like to do what this guy did in the pic, but the closest way to get it is with nail polish, or by using one of Createx airbrush paints, or I can layer interference/pearl paints (thinned down Golden/Liquitex with airbrush flow improver + glazing medium) over the metal color?

There is no pearl powder that I can readily get without horrendous ground shipping, sorry.

The Iwata HP-CS Eclipse is still one of the better entry-mid level airbrushes you can get, along with the Badger 105 Patriot.

My Advice? TCP Global's TC-20 air compressor and tank combo runs about $99.99. Currently free standard shipping.

Iwata HP-CS Eclipse. Go to Hobby Lobby, either print out or have the website open and find the 40% off Coupon for 1 single regular priced item. Get the HP-CS Eclipse airbrush kit for $209.99. Becomes $125.99 plus tax.

Total kit: $225.99. May need a hose, pretty sure TC-20 comes with one.
Will probably never need replacement until you get way ahead of the hobby and even then the HP-CS will still be your workhorse.

Either way.

I'd want to avoid spraying lacquers and dealing with them in general. If I do, I'd rather do it in spraycans.

In meantime, I've managed to find some pearl powders that can be mixed and sprayed in acrylics. Golden Acrylics Iridescent Pearl thinned down for airbrushing would be my last option.

Sounds irrational given that spraycans put out way more fumes and paint in a way less controlled manner.

All good looking metallics are lacquers, that's just a fact of life.

If you really can't get over your fear of lacquers you might want to look into electroplating powders instead.

you prime your pieces to protect the plastic and also giving your paints adherence to the surface

Not yet though, I am google translating the ABS plastic spraying guide on the Kotobukiya site.

And speaking of spraying, the Materia's entire arms and legs are all made of ABS plastic, including the joints. Wondering if the stress of posing after spraying it in lacquer might do something.

For the Materia box art... the shading on the white parts was a purplish tone, but I found this handy thing that could give a purple sheen on white when tilted:

https://www.paintwithpearl.com/shop/interference-iridescent-ghost-pearls-pigments/violet-satin-ghost-pearl/

For duochrome/chameleon paints... nail polish brands are far cheaper than the powders... just have to watch out for the particle grain size, some are really huge.

And no. That's a custom with improved specs. This guy is just slapping a gundam head on a Gm Striker.
I don't know, when I make a custom or think about what I want when I customize something or kitbash it I generally want it to be an improvement on the original.

How do I ensure my pictures are 72 dpi for the HLJ submission? I'm reading it up on google but I still can't wrap my head around it.
>>
>>6302940
Why on earth would you pay $30 + $12 flat rate shipping at Hobbywave when you could get a GM Sniper II at Amazon for $35 shipped? Like the anon above said, a lot of the deals aren't that great and in some cases (like this one) you can find a better overall prices elsewhere.
>>
>>6303403
Right click on it and go to properties, then go to the details tab. Should display the DPI there. If it's not 72, I would recommend downloading Photoshop CS2, which is now available for free from Adobe and is generally just a good tool to have around. Open your pic up in PS, go to the image dropdown menu, and select "image size" to be able to resize your image and change the DPI.

And just for a quick explanation, DPI means "dots per inch" and is basically a statistic only used in printing, as it tells the printer literally how many "dots" of ink to lay down on every inch of paper. The higher the DPI, the higher the filesize of the picture, and the more tiny little dots the printer puts down, which equals a crisper and nicer quality print. This is basically meaningless for online pics, where resolution is what matters. Bandai is basically telling you to limit it to 72 to keep your filesize down (300 DPI is standard for nice quality prints, and will generate much larger files than 72).
>>
Is Gentei legit? I'm thinking of placing a preorder.
>>
>>6303419
Gentei kits?

He's a nice dude, he let me mod a pre-order a week before it was due to arrive, he let me cancel an item included and changed the address all without any harsh implications.

Prices are good too because you're buying DIRECT from japan so you're just paying item+commission+shipping rather than throwing SHIPPING TO SELLER on top and an EXTENSIVE COMMISSION BECAUSE WESTERN SELLER HOHOHO (like gundam planet or gginfinite, not that either are bad but are more costly).

So its a great option especially if you aren't an american (where despite the cost you have options, I don't because australian sellers who sell these charge $100aud for some p=bandai high grades)

In short its good, just use the site as normal and don't spam him with shit, its a one man operation and if he refunds you he got fucked over by bandai's shitty order system (he can't bulk order stuff like he used to, he has to order like a regular consumer)

>>
>>6304722
They threw in the White Dingo hands to hold up the old ass Ground Gundam weapons. Because those don't have a tab in the grip.

Consequently, the 3.0 hands suck for holding things by friction.
>>
>>6304722
God damn that White Dingo looks plain. Hopefully the decals will help with that, I might take inspiration from an RG and have white and off-white to compliment each other.
>>
>>6304942
I know it's an established color scheme and all, but yeah, that grey replacing the red as the accent color really makes it look rather drab and dull. Not to mention losing the contrast in the skirts as well.

The one thing I really like about the white Dingo is that the grey face vents kinda melt into the neck area, which really defines the face shape sharply.

Also, I might as well ask: I've been thinking about getting the standard MG GM Sniper II, but I'm somewhat poor at the moment and it's the only kit I'll be able to buy for a while. Is it pretty satisfying to build and play with and pose?
>>

Interesting, but the thing is, the Mega Armor line hit on a number of points for me:
>Very affordable
>Huge amount of variety in the line
>Interesting use of colors and materials like clear plastic and chrome

I just can't imagine Bandai hitting these same marks with the new line. They're gonna do this way too legit and bougie and make these like $40 each or some shit. And it probably won't hit the deliriously garish heights the original line did either, cause that would be far too risky of a design decision for them nowadays. Yeah, I see them trying with these clear panels, but it's a weak effort and I feel pretty whatever about it.
>>
>>6305451
Oh yeah, and the fact that they're now D-Arts sized practically seals the deal: these are gonna be relatively pricey. What Bandai should have done is revived them at the same scale as before and slapped a budget price on them. They DO know how to bring a real bang to small, cheap toys (Assault Kingdom is a great example), and that's what I would have liked to see in this revival. Instead they seem to be going the fancy/expensive route--which also guarantees that they'll trickle out slower and there won't be as much of a selection.
>>
>>6305451
>>6305454
Which division is making this new line? If it's the toys division (as the old one was) then it's probably going the premium route, which the toys division is all about these days.

So my first MG kit arrived about a week ago, and jesus christ I'm way in over my head; I haven't done water decals since I messed around with Warhams a few years back.

To be fair, the D-Arts are about the size of HGs, maybe slightly bigger, so it might be somewhere in-between as far as price is concerned. I think they're gonna release a "base" model, and then armor add-ons that are cheaper than the entire thing.
