For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

There will definitely be things smaller then what I am suggesting, but you are asking Plamo/gunpla general and not scale model general so this will probably be among the smallest we know about.

first is the upcoming Hexagears like >>6288678 These things are 1/24 scale, so very small, much smaller then GI Joes.

Second is my personal favorite for the moment, Universal Unit. Tiny gundam kits basically, mode kit versions of the now retired Assault Kingdom line. These little guys have shockingly high amount of posability, although a few of them have lesser articulation then their AK predessecor despite being virtually identical. Biggest example would be zaku thanks to stiff unbendable plastic for the leg tubes and skirt armor lacking movable panels.

Third is the 1/144 scale Zoids, these are probably the most part heavy of the tiny kits I mentioned, so if you want more of the model kit experience, these are for you. They are in the same scale as HG gunpla but only come up to the thighs at their highest. Most will be more like knee height.

But again, this is the gunpla thread so if you are looking for boats that fit in bottles or something, ask Scale Model General. But I still recommend any of the three i mentioned as they make for fun little desk toys to tinker with now and then

Something with character has a certain advantage over something that has implied character at best, within the same field. Simple as that. Tack on bias towards something more humanoid, too. Both are mecha, FAGs just have an advantage (and you've had less of a fill of them). It all makes sense, worry not.

Bandai has some really tiny star wars kits. Star destroyer that fits in your palm etc.

Probably the reason why I bought the baselard FAG a few weeks ago. Not that they are likely to go out of production, but they are comparatively harder to get your hands on than your average gunpla. Unless Bandai hates your favorite kit in particular.

I get the feeling this will change as Koto gets larger. Hopefully they'll branch out some too so they don't get shafted as hard when the robowaifu bubble pops.

Isn't this kind of what they're doing already? FAGs are actually reissued nowadays and Koto keeps coming up with new lines on top of their already diverse selection.
I know robogirls are all the rage now but the only reason Koto even got to this point was by licensing just about every franchise under the sun and getting in a couple of kits, FAGs are just the latest iteration of their plamo waifus.

When priming, should the entire surface of the piece being painted be covered on the first coat, or is a coat just considered one pass over the piece? Same for spray paint. Do I just hit it once, regardless of if the piece becomes the desired color on the first pass or not, and then wait x amount of time to do the next coat?

I'm practicing on an extra foot piece I had lying around.

well, mini hygoggs alongside the HG kit I should specify. Unfortunately I did not get both variants as I was originally hoping, but at least I prefer the look of the open hands over the closed ones in more poses. And if I ever feel like it I can always just mess around with cutting and repositioning the fingers of the spare.

>>6289003
This is the first time koto has been this on the ball with reissues so soon after initial release. This is not their norm. Being a poor budget minded zoids fan is suffering cause they never reissue one I want when I got the spare income.

>>6289007
for both priming and painting one pass is a layer. build up those layers for a full coat. But let the layers dry before you add on.
>>
>>6289013
>one pass is a layer

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. My first attempt at painting was a disaster because I assumed one layer meant enough to cover the whole piece. What's the average dry time? About an hour?
>>
>>6289003
Yeah, they are branching out now, I realized right after hitting submit that I wasn't being fair. As for reissues time will tell as this doesn't seem to be their standard yet, or at least we don't have the pattern to establish it as one. I'd like Zoids to become their Gundam though, that'd be great. I suppose FAGs aren't a bad alternative but I need more furry Gendum.
>>
>>6289019
Different dude, but from my experience, I can never get those perfect, uniform primer grey (especially white) all the time unless it's over a dark color with 3+ layers. However, what's important is that it keeps the paint on top scratch-resistant and 2-3 layers works for me when before I only did 1. You can spray that second layer really soon after the first, like a few minutes after. 1 hour is for curing.
>>
>>6289025
Their girls are becoming their gundam. I have a feeling they will be the go to for cute girl model kits especialy robo girls. They are already showing us they are not willing to just sit back and keep it FA only either. Maybe if we are lucky they might start doing Zoids FAGs and thus maybe revive more interest in the normal zoids kits.

But then again I shouldn't complain that much, the line's 'second season/chapter/whatev' is starting to finally pick up steam. In just a few months time they revealed 3 kits, 1 completely new, 1 half new(CAS variant for Fuhrer) and one repaint, when they were only revealing one kit at a time since they started the second chapter.

>>6289019
probably depends on what is being used, but my experience is that I wait 30 minutes and I am fine. but let me point out that after you finished your primer coat you will want to let it cure. A day is the best bet but like the other anon said a couple hours should be fine. I just like to play things safe.
>>
>>6289019

I don't know what kind of paint you are using but with Tamiya spray can primer it becomes dry enough to do another coat very quickly, like within a couple of minutes quickly. The point about letting it cure still stands, though.
>>
>>6289081
>>6289066
>>6289040
Thanks for the help. I'm a couple coats in. Gonna hit it once more before I go to the gym. If I'm feeling brave, I'll try painting it in a few hours after it cures.

>>
>>6289234
i've always wondered why people attend local cons rather than the big ones.

if the UK fans want a con, why don't they just go to the bigger ones abroad? even the gunpla shows at local cons suck, no one has any idea how it works and people just bring their snapshit builds or horrible goopy acrylic abominations

My county throws a local modeling con every 2 years, mainly headed by the local IPMS group. People come from all over, including out of state. It's not a huge venue (Last year we just rented out a local fire hall) but hundreds of people show up, we have like a dozen vendors selling a lot of weird kits and random supplies, and the main draw is the competition itself which has dozens of categories.

Overall its a fun time. Half the money we earn gets donated to charity and the other half goes towards the club and the next con.

It's nice to have a small local convention when they're well organized.
>>
>>6289418
That's about all they had. It was a "Maid cafe" with a couple chunky maids. One of them also doubled as the musical guest and did gundam karaoke after the original musical guest backed out.

That said, actually watching someone do the hairspray trick was interesting, as I've never tried it personally and only read about it. I wanna give it a try but I'm a bit wary because his looked so shit.

Hey everyone, this is my first time building a Gundam model kit. It's the Gundam Astray Red Frame with the Flight Unit and I ham handed it a bit.
I accidentally broke off one side of the head crest while trying to take off the head and while that was fairly easy to fix with crazy glue, I later broke off the whole crest from the part that is inserted into the head (pic related shows the red piece stuck inside).
Now my question is whether or not I can get the small piece out of the head to glue the crest back together or if I'll have to try to glue it with the piece still in there? If possible I'd like to get it out so I don't make any sort of mess, but I don't know how to go about getting it out.

tl;dr can I get this piece out or will I have to fix the crest with it in the head

Thanks
>>
>>6289642
Putty is probably going to be easier than glue in this case. You'll need to do a minor bit of sanding with it.
>>
>>6289621
>Painted so many layers of unthinned paint he can't even panel wash.
>>
>>6289650
Would I still need to get the piece out in order to use the putty? And would I be reattaching the stuck piece to the crest or using the putty as a replacement to the stuck piece once its removed?

I suppose so, I've not had too many problems with tax going for simple SAL though, it's when you go EMS or SAL Parcel that you get fucked over.

>>6290053
Most retailers say how much the parcel is worth so they don't get into any trouble if it's searched and they realize your PG 1/60 Gundam isn't worth the £15 it says on the box.
Generally, there are times where they just can't be arsed to look at your parcel, which is Royal Mail doing their job probably. If you're shipping from Japan, always try and go for SAL packet, as it's the least likely to get taxed but will take weeks to get to you. The likes of EMS and SAL parcel will probably get to you quicker, but you'll get taxed a lot more too.

I have few questions about flat topcoat.
- Should I apply decals before or after toapcoating?
- Is it easy to adjust some panel lines after topcoating? (I used the marker on the bare plastic and I was wondering if the flat coat makes the ink stick better for some minor retouch)

Girlfriend wants to build a gunpla with me, but she's TERRIFIED of the tiny pieces..... I literally just buy whatever looks cool to me anymore. What would be a decent one for her to build first? She's looking for primarily one of the more feminine kits (like Lapis Lazuli Gundam Glacier, or IBO Hyakuren Amida) I've just been out of the loop for a long time and maybe get a kit every 3 months or so.

Not that anon nor am I anywhere near a scarborough but I nearly choked out of disbelief when the singing started. I really hope they do more folksy songs like that for the rest of the series, that one song along has me watching in hopes of something very interesting. At least it is not looking to have any of the typical echii haremy stuff thrown in on the side of the story like most shows these days. So I can give it that.

Damn I never spoke to a Limeomancer before, how's that line of work?
Tamiya's definitely affects gundam markers, makes them all splotchy. However it seems to be hit or miss with the panel lines. Sometimes they run or smudge, sometimes they don't. Heavier lines are more likely to smudge. Just try to be as light on the layers as you can.

SO foil stickers will actually stick to a flatcoated surface without looking bad? I always just applied them first and sprayed them (it dulls them down a little but not completely) because I figured flatcoat technically creates micro-grit on the surface, so stickers probably wouldn't stick well.

Take a step back and look at the greater context of the whole thing. This is G Con, you mentioned rural high school competition, well we were expecting just as bad if not worse. Not sure if you remember the detials or were around when this was being planned last year, but if I recall correctly you had to pay to enter, pay to have your gunpla displayed AND pay for it to be eligible for judging in the 'contest'. I beleive the prize if any, was a 'trip to japan'. Basically tagging along with the guy in charge as he took a business trip to japan. Again most of this is recollections of a lot of hearsay being thrown around here so even if half this stuff turned out to be not true, this is what we heard and thus what our expectations formed by

So all that context, can you honestly say all of those models fit the expectations formed by the context? who on earth who actually cares about model quality would be willing to pay all that to enter some shady competition where the judges/owner probably would just auto select their best bud or something?

We were expecting horrendous weathering attempts, thick paint and so on. not to see actually clean looking builds, sure there was mostly crap, but there was more good then we gave any expectance for.

Context is fine. Models are okay. They are not "shit" as some might claim, but to call them "excellent" is laughable.

"Excellent" is supposed to make you go WOW. It's supposed to take your fucking breath away.
>>
>>6290668
I definitely admit the original guy saying 'excellent' is an over exageration, but maybe some actually are more 'excellent' then the two of us think. Look at the example you posted which I assume is what you think is 'excellent', now imagine it being displayed there, without any of the lighting that makes your example really awesome looking. Kinda bland without all that I bet.

The creative use of LEDs is what made that specific build "excellent" for me. With LEDs on the room lighting shouldn't really matter imo.

"Creative" is the keyword here.
>>
>>6290675
or you could just point out which of the entries in the event are "excellent" (but are just in bad lighting i'm sure)
>>
>>6290686
I really don't think any of them look 'excellent' as they are. I simply looked at his example and then wondered "well maybe lighting would be all that is needed to make a pretty good model look excellent"

But you clearly lack the reading comprehension in the first place if you are asking what I find 'excellent' when I clearly said
> original guy saying 'excellent' is an over exageration

>>6290683
I am still very curious how it would look if the thing was shot in a room setting. I just have a thing for collecting comparison shots of the effects of various lighting

But love the LED usage regardless, especially that even the street lights got them.

In general, I think most people have a low standard for what is excellent in gunpla, but it's good to know some people don't just throw if out there. I would even say most people have a low standard for great/good even as, for some reason, just because you put effort into doing something, doesn't make it good/great/excellent if it wasn't executed well. An example is weathering and terrible painting.

But anyway. I think I might be a little in over my head with this. With something so tiny, I'm gonna have to be handbrushing a lot of things that I can't airbrush, but the masking is gonna be painful.

with how small the UUs are I personally don't see much need to paint them, espeically not with the extra little issues small sizes you have to deal with. I would just panel line, a touch up here and there where they want stickers placed and then topcoat it.

Yeah, that wasn't the best wording. What I meant is where airbrushing would be way more of a pain than handbrushing like the face.

Final shots of the VF-31 Siegfried. Honestly, it was a ton of fun to build, but it was super frustrating. The instructions basically only tell you to do one or two bits of stickers, and then the rest of them at the end. Which is awful. If you purchase one of the Macross Delta 1/72 kits, build a section then go look at the decal guide and do that, then move on.

Only posting one shot, rest are in this imgur album.

How sturdy and resilient to handling are epoxy putty recast/dupe parts?

>epoxy putty as in Greenstuff, Free Form and Aves Apoxie

This is very important, I'd need to know if I need to somehow shove in a wire armature in the process.

FYI, Aves Apoxie gets dissolved easily with isopropyl alcohol. It's either that or the d-limonene inside the solvent makes it less... crystallized.

Epoxy is a very weak material compared to thermoplastics. But it's fine for large, thick stuff that won't get touched much. If you want to do spikes or something not a good idea unless it's just layered onto of an existing object.

Okay, you've got my attention. Any examples?

So that could be said of pointy tips of hair? That those ends should be styrene/wire inside, or at the end, and the contour is the epoxy putty?

If the wire goes all the way to the tip it might be better but epoxy is very brittle and not too strong, so thin pieces will break anyway while the thing inside will just flex. If you plan to just make a statue it's fine

All you really need is a sharp blade. Any hobby knife is fine and we've even had one guy swear by surgical scalpels. Just use whatever you can get your hands on but make sure it's safe and replace the blade when it's dull.

Saw it at a convention yesterday and thought... "Why not?".

About to start my oldest kit (from what I can tell. I know they re-released this in 2014). What's the oldest kit in your collection? Do you display it or have you regulated it to the box?

It's not as big of a kit,but I have the 1999 Z'gok HGUC. It's not terrible, but the joints are loose as hell right off the bat.

Quick snap and this thing has not aged well.

I never got the MG Psycho Zaku/Thunderbolt Gundam but I heard horror stories about the plastic bag joint things. These blue plastic bag things were terrible old man ballsack material that gets caught on everything (Left arm keeps folding in on itself).

I have never painted before so I might take the opportunity and make this more show accurate (Not fussed about wasting the stickers).

I've been thinking of getting for quite sometime. I like it because of its super robot feel to it. I've seen the reviews and aside from the sword being heavy and the legs don't do much split everything looks OK.

Any other things should I look out for?

Regarding to pic related what's the wing attachment on this pic?
>>
>>6293186

I just bought the MG Kampfer and I guess that is that oldest kit I have. I haven't built it yet though.
>>
>>6293263
If I had to guess, the Mega Shiki's Mega Ride Launcher. Note that if you want to get it, you can't just buy the standalone version; the "wings" are from the Mega Shiki's backpack.

Also most of the problems with the original HG ZZ were how unwieldy its accessories were, so I can't imagine you'll have much problems.

Are Tamiya acrylics more scratch resistant/durable than the vallejo acrylics?

Also, how is their primer, tamiya liquid surface primer? I have used their primer in a can and I like it but as I am getting an airbrush I would prefer not to need to use cans or decanting cans.
>>
>>6293742

>>
>>6293180
Tamiya enamel.
>>
>>6293736
Might want to ask the scale model general, but I'm pretty sure 1/35 is really rare for aircraft. 1/48 and 1/32 are much more common (although I believe 1/48 and 1/72 are much more common than 1/32)
>>
>>6293746

thanks aniki, will try that one too.
>>
>>6293743
>Are Tamiya acrylics more scratch resistant/durable than the vallejo acrylics?
No. In fact, they tend to scratch off even easier until you topcoat them.

But yes, their primer is good.
>>
>>6293797

I might just stick to vallejo then since I already have a decent model color library I built while handbrushing some kits.

I have heard bad things about the vallejo primer though (durability wise), but I guess using the tamiya or mr color primer instead isn't too much of a bother.

Though for some reason out of like 5 domestic shops that stocked Tamiya paints, only one had the primer that wasn't in a can, and no shops stocked mr color lacquers at all.

Praise the EU, I can buy mr color from a Polish site instead.

>>
How come I often see WIP images of primed kits that are fully assembled? Isn't it best to do all of the painting, including priming, mostly disassembled?
>>
>>6295537
If I'm not painting and there aren't many obstructions like huge front skirts on the kit I'll top coat the kit while fully assembled. That way everything has the same coating.

Now for painting, I only just did my first attempt and like shown >>6294108 I color separated everything and painted them while on the skewers. That's probably the best way to do it if you're painting and not just clear coating the kit.
>>
>>6295537
If you're just painting it's ok to leave them on alligator clips the entire time. However, when doing a lot of modifications, it's nice to see the entire kit together in grayscale.
>>
>>6295605

Now that I think about it most of the kits I saw like that were customized or a kitbash of some sort, so I guess that's why.
>>
>>6295669
I always wondered the same too. You'll still see people just posting a primed assembled kit with no modifications though and all I see is a bunch of time lost taking them off the clips and putting them back on. This also applies to people who also assemble everything before any decals, weathering, final top coat just to see it all together. I guess people like them value progressive results rather than one huge big one at the end, which I personally think is way more satisfying/efficient.
>>
>>6295692

Don't really see how you wouldn't be able to do decals, weathering or top coat to an assembled kit. Unless there are parts I don't want to top coat I do it limb by limb.
>>
