There will definitely be things smaller then what I am suggesting, but you are asking Plamo/gunpla general and not scale model general so this will probably be among the smallest we know about.

first is the upcoming Hexagears like >>6288678 These things are 1/24 scale, so very small, much smaller then GI Joes.

Second is my personal favorite for the moment, Universal Unit. Tiny gundam kits basically, mode kit versions of the now retired Assault Kingdom line. These little guys have shockingly high amount of posability, although a few of them have lesser articulation then their AK predessecor despite being virtually identical. Biggest example would be zaku thanks to stiff unbendable plastic for the leg tubes and skirt armor lacking movable panels.

Third is the 1/144 scale Zoids, these are probably the most part heavy of the tiny kits I mentioned, so if you want more of the model kit experience, these are for you. They are in the same scale as HG gunpla but only come up to the thighs at their highest. Most will be more like knee height.


But again, this is the gunpla thread so if you are looking for boats that fit in bottles or something, ask Scale Model General. But I still recommend any of the three i mentioned as they make for fun little desk toys to tinker with now and then

Something with character has a certain advantage over something that has implied character at best, within the same field. Simple as that. Tack on bias towards something more humanoid, too. Probably the reason why I bought the baselard FAG a few weeks ago. Not that they are likely to go out of production, but they are comparatively harder to get your hands on than your average gunpla. Unless Bandai hates your favorite kit in particular.

Isn't this kind of what they're doing already? FAGs are actually reissued nowadays and Koto keeps coming up with new lines on top of their already diverse selection.
I know robogirls are all the rage now but the only reason Koto even got to this point was by licensing just about every franchise under the sun and getting in a couple of kits, FAGs are just the latest iteration of their plamo waifus.

When priming, should the entire surface of the piece being painted be covered on the first coat, or is a coat just considered one pass over the piece? Same for spray paint. Do I just hit it once, regardless of if the piece becomes the desired color on the first pass or not, and then wait x amount of time to do the next coat?

I'm practicing on an extra foot piece I had lying around.

Different dude, but from my experience, I can never get those perfect, uniform primer grey (especially white) all the time unless it's over a dark color with 3+ layers. However, what's important is that it keeps the paint on top scratch-resistant and 2-3 layers works for me when before I only did 1. You can spray that second layer really soon after the first, like a few minutes after. 1 hour is for curing.

They are already showing us they are not willing to just sit back and keep it FA only either. I don't know what kind of paint you are using but with Tamiya spray can primer it becomes dry enough to do another coat very quickly, like within a couple of minutes quickly. The point about letting it cure still stands, though.

Scored some extra water decals from a friend. Never tried them before and I want to put it on a certain kit only to realize its already been matte coated.

The temptation to scrub it down and start over just for the decal is kind of tempting.

My county throws a local modeling con every 2 years, mainly headed by the local IPMS group. People come from all over, including out of state. It's not a huge venue (Last year we just rented out a local fire hall) but hundreds of people show up, we have like a dozen vendors selling a lot of weird kits and random supplies, and the main draw is the competition itself which has dozens of categories.

Overall its a fun time. Half the money we earn gets donated to charity and the other half goes towards the club and the next con.

It's nice to have a small local convention when they're well organized.

Hey everyone, this is my first time building a Gundam model kit. It's the Gundam Astray Red Frame with the Flight Unit and I ham handed it a bit.
I accidentally broke off one side of the head crest while trying to take off the head and while that was fairly easy to fix with crazy glue, I later broke off the whole crest from the part that is inserted into the head (pic related shows the red piece stuck inside).
Now my question is whether or not I can get the small piece out of the head to glue the crest back together or if I'll have to try to glue it with the piece still in there? If possible I'd like to get it out so I don't make any sort of mess, but I don't know how to go about getting it out.


tl;dr can I get this piece out or will I have to fix the crest with it in the head

Calling this one finished. It's not perfect, but these IBO kits are good for practice. Will be getting the 6th form for the mace though.
The katana and rifle included in this kit kinda suck balls. I'm praying that if they release a MG it will have all of the forms in one kit, instead of being seperate releases. Those greedy fucks.

Most retailers say how much the parcel is worth so they don't get into any trouble if it's searched and they realize your PG 1/60 Gundam isn't worth the £15 it says on the box.
Generally, there are times where they just can't be arsed to look at your parcel, which is Royal Mail doing their job probably. If you're shipping from Japan, always try and go for SAL packet, as it's the least likely to get taxed but will take weeks to get to you. The likes of EMS and SAL parcel will probably get to you quicker, but you'll get taxed a lot more too.

I have few questions about flat topcoat.
- Should I apply decals before or after toapcoating?
- Is it easy to adjust some panel lines after topcoating? (I used the marker on the bare plastic and I was wondering if the flat coat makes the ink stick better for some minor retouch)
- I didn't apply the stickers because I was afraid flat cost would screw foil ones, so when it is recommended to apply them? Before or after?

Girlfriend wants to build a gunpla with me, but she's TERRIFIED of the tiny pieces..... I literally just buy whatever looks cool to me anymore. What would be a decent one for her to build first? Tamiya's definitely affects gundam markers, makes them all splotchy. However it seems to be hit or miss with the panel lines. Sometimes they run or smudge, sometimes they don't. Heavier lines are more likely to smudge. Just try to be as light on the layers as you can.

Take a step back and look at the greater context of the whole thing. This is G Con, you mentioned rural high school competition, well we were expecting just as bad if not worse. Not sure if you remember the detials or were around when this was being planned last year, but if I recall correctly you had to pay to enter, pay to have your gunpla displayed AND pay for it to be eligible for judging in the 'contest'. I beleive the prize if any, was a 'trip to japan'. Basically tagging along with the guy in charge as he took a business trip to japan. Again most of this is recollections of a lot of hearsay being thrown around here so even if half this stuff turned out to be not true, this is what we heard and thus what our expectations formed by

So all that context, can you honestly say all of those models fit the expectations formed by the context? who on earth who actually cares about model quality would be willing to pay all that to enter some shady competition where the judges/owner probably would just auto select their best bud or something?

We were expecting horrendous weathering attempts, thick paint and so on. not to see actually clean looking builds, sure there was mostly crap, but there was more good then we gave any expectance for.

In general, I think most people have a low standard for what is excellent in gunpla, but it's good to know some people don't just throw if out there. I would even say most people have a low standard for great/good even as, for some reason, just because you put effort into doing something, doesn't make it good/great/excellent if it wasn't executed well. An example is weathering and terrible painting.

But anyway. I think I might be a little in over my head with this. With something so tiny, I'm gonna have to be handbrushing a lot of things that I can't airbrush, but the masking is gonna be painful.

My first two kits. Decided to dive in feet first! Astray I want to Panel Line but I put stickers on him already for the most part and I don't have the confidence to take them off. Any suggestions? Also besides rubbing alchohol is there any other suggested ways of cleaning up metallic Marker spill?

Final shots of the VF-31 Siegfried. Honestly, it was a ton of fun to build, but it was super frustrating. The instructions basically only tell you to do one or two bits of stickers, and then the rest of them at the end. Which is awful. If you purchase one of the Macross Delta 1/72 kits, build a section then go look at the decal guide and do that, then move on.

Actually not bad with the transforming, Bandai did make sure the stickers that went near moving parts where divided up. I'm probably going to leave it in plan form for a while. And the sticker thing will make sense if you look at the booklet.

Epoxy is a very weak material compared to thermoplastics. But it's fine for large, thick stuff that won't get touched much. If you want to do spikes or something not a good idea unless it's just layered onto of an existing object.

I never got the MG Psycho Zaku/Thunderbolt Gundam but I heard horror stories about the plastic bag joint things. These blue plastic bag things were terrible old man ballsack material that gets caught on everything (Left arm keeps folding in on itself).

I have never painted before so I might take the opportunity and make this more show accurate (Not fussed about wasting the stickers).

If I had to guess, the Mega Shiki's Mega Ride Launcher. Note that if you want to get it, you can't just buy the standalone version; the "wings" are from the Mega Shiki's backpack.

I might just stick to vallejo then since I already have a decent model color library I built while handbrushing some kits.

I have heard bad things about the vallejo primer though (durability wise), but I guess using the tamiya or mr color primer instead isn't too much of a bother.

Though for some reason out of like 5 domestic shops that stocked Tamiya paints, only one had the primer that wasn't in a can, and no shops stocked mr color lacquers at all.

Praise the EU, I can buy mr color from a Polish site instead.

Just asking if I have understood it properly, there are issues with airbrushing lacquer and lacquer thinner if there are any rubber parts inside the airbrush, but fine if it uses PTFE seals?

No way.
I can say this from experience, since I built my first kit in Japan with no cutters or anything, I just twisted off the pieces like I would with Beyblades back in the day.
It looked nothing like this.

Not like you couldn't do it, but the o-rings can be corroded or damaged. Apparently.
The good stuff usually have ptfe seals for the important bits anyway

I made a double check and the airbrush I ordered has ptfe seals.

That sucks, but I thought that having spares easily available from hobby shops in my country would be a good idea. Brands like iwata and badger were super rare in comparison.

I definitly will post the finished product here. Probably won't be able to fully assemble the thing for another two weeks or so though. Semi gloss top coat today for the painted pieces, detailing and final gloss topcoat next weekend. And if I have time next week, pearl coat the white.

Loaded up some new high velocity sniper rounds for my new gun.

I think I'm gonna remove what little panel lining I've done and paint the armor.

How come I often see WIP images of primed kits that are fully assembled? Isn't it best to do all of the painting, including priming, mostly disassembled?

If I'm not painting and there aren't many obstructions like huge front skirts on the kit I'll top coat the kit while fully assembled. That way everything has the same coating.

Now for painting, I only just did my first attempt and like shown >>6294108 I color separated everything and painted them while on the skewers. That's probably the best way to do it if you're painting and not just clear coating the kit.

If you're just painting it's ok to leave them on alligator clips the entire time. However, when doing a lot of modifications, it's nice to see the entire kit together in grayscale.

Now that I think about it most of the kits I saw like that were customized or a kitbash of some sort, so I guess that's why.

I always wondered the same too. You'll still see people just posting a primed assembled kit with no modifications though and all I see is a bunch of time lost taking them off the clips and putting them back on. This also applies to people who also assemble everything before any decals, weathering, final top coat just to see it all together. I guess people like them value progressive results rather than one huge big one at the end, which I personally think is way more satisfying/efficient.

Don't really see how you wouldn't be able to do decals, weathering or top coat to an assembled kit. Unless there are parts I don't want to top coat I do it limb by limb.

Another Dantalion form was revealed called perfect cowl. I've mistaken Thought it was called perfect cow. So expect this sooner or later in model form.
