Where to buy second hand Shinkis:
>eBay, Amazon - generally overpriced, but you might get lucky.
>Mandarake, Rakuten - search 武装神姫 and don't trust listing images.
>Yahoo Japan Auctions, Suruga-ya - you'll need a proxy if you’re not in Japan.
>Taobao - some shops ship international now, so you might not need a proxy.
>Amiami, Jungle-scs - occasionally get some preowned.
>Check the BST threads, My Figure Collection, and Busou Shinki World too.

Even if, even IF one could point out a ton of extremely reasons why this thing cost so damn much to make that it 100% justifies the cost of it, they just should NOT have made it. There is a point where people will go 'oh, just not worth it to ME. I can not justify that much money on this type of product.'
>>

"Styko" knows she isn't allowed on 4chan.
>>

don't say that, styko is perfectly allowed here, as long as she knows she is stupid, worthless, and to not take attention away from far superior girls.

Hello everyone, old shinkifag here, I haven't checked anything Shinki related in years, recently started seeing you guys now talk about FA Girls and decided to look more about these figs and couldnt find more info than seeing most of the girls in Kotobukiyas website, amiami only had some bluray bundles so, how can I get my one of these girls?
>>
>>6280215
Amiami, Hobby Search, and HLJ all stock Frame Arms Girls. They often sell out, so you may have trouble getting the one you want without some patience and/or preordering whenever there's a reissue.
>>
>>6280215
Or try getting them from China taobao. They have factory there so the price and stock is actually great there
>>
>>6280190
Stop that. You are only making me like her more, and I don't want to buy and build her.

I want to dress Sty-ko up in cute clothes but her armor is too bulky...

I wanna put a bow on Gourai-chan's head too.
>>
>>6280215
>how can I get my one of these girls?

The usual sites, they've been really popular, and the anime currently being released has made them even more so so you'll need to wait for restocks if you can't find the one you're looking for.

The reason the threads have been talking about them more than Shinki as of late is because it's a sort of spiritual successor to busou shinki from a non-dick company who's actually throwing a large amount of support behind the line.
>>
>>6280412
>I want to dress Sty-ko up in cute clothes but her armor is too bulky...

Get innocentia and body swap. IIRC she specifically comes with a neck part to make it easier to wear scale clothing.

Preorders for the VLOCKER'S Girl are open. I like her doofy face, so I'm gonna get one and see how the kits are

Killer Innocentia.jpg
30KB, 600x800px
So I bought and built Innocentia and this is my first F:AG. Gotta say I love the articulation, would want to collect more maybe I'll buy add-ons too.
>>
>>6280797
Well, you did get one with the best articulation so far, only Megamis rival that out of Kotobukiya's stuff. This shoulder articulation used in the catgirl is new, at least.
>>
>>6280908
Will the reissue apply the new shoulder articulation?
>>
>>6280918
Reissues unfortunately don't apply anything, you may get some extra wrist joints or whatever is prone to breaking on a given model, but there are no changes. So the reissued Gourai will still be the same Gourai as the first wave one. And I can't really recommend Gourai and Stylet for articulation alone, it's not terrible, but things fall out a lot.

Now then the first two BD special kits are new (heavily Innocentia and Materia-based) and Gourai Kai will certainly use the newest articulation there is at the time.
>>
Basically, if you've got lots of cash, you could get the BD kits and the old kits and use base body from one and armor from another and you'll have a "reissue with new articulation".
>>
>>6280935
Or you could just buy the current kit and then wait for them to do a 2.0 and buy that when it comes out and still only have spent half as much.

It's kind of sad, I've legitimately gotten lost a few times the last few days.
>>
>>6281941
Use a fresh Xacto knife and very carefully shave away the nub. Use gentle strokes, and make sure to flip the piece around on the last few to help reduce the stress on the plastic.

Even with this you'll sometimes get a little white discoloration, though. The only way to get perfect coloration every time is to paint and topcoat. If you don't feel confident in doing that, though, then an Xacto knife will give you the best results you can get with bare plastic.
>>

I'm having the same problem as you. Either I put on a lot with a couple of passes, or I hurry up and jam it hard?

Otherwise my results is an inconsistent bead along the seam and I get little gaps where the weld misses. Re-opening the seam to put in more cement is a crapshoot where I more often than not make a bigger mess even with prying with a knife and mounting the halfs/holding with other tools?

Anyone else here with tips on how to seamweld with thin cement?

She's violet, actually. Both the anime, colored pages, and cover art have her as a dark-ish violet (purple is her signature color just as Miia's is red, Papi's is blue, etc). Still, the coloration for Gou-Rachnera was probably the guy's personal tastes for the custom.

When I finally get around to getting myself some MDs/FAGs I am beginning to think I will need to make casts of some of the more commonly broken parts first. So that said, any other joints that snap fairly often? I know there is the hip piece in MDs but that can be replaced by cutting up T sections of the runners IIRC.

Do you mean "slightly leave the seam open" "put the pieces partially together" and then let it run?

So like, blu-tack the halves on the opposite clamp ends of a screwable vise and then squeeze them into place after letting the cement run?

Also:
Sword sheath pieces tend to have the seam welding happen on the inside so if you try putting the swords in or out, that leftover plastic scratches away at the paintjob of the swords. Found out the hard way when I had to sand away the inside and clean it up. Major hassle.

They have physical stores in Japan. Probably have to wait a couple of months for VolksUSA to get it if you're in burgerland. I haven't seen many people that are actual dealers for Volks kits, since they have very few dealers for their dolls. They do sometimes come stateside to conventions like SDCC, Anime Expo, and Anime Matsuri (which was last weekend).

You do that with plastic cement still. It's a slightly different way of tackling the problem but it doesn't make a huge difference.

If you're going with just cement tho, make sure you really get a lot in there, especially if you're using the thin stuff.

I use that same cement, and the hold seems to work out just fine. I apply lightly to edges of one side and on pegs then push the two pieces together. hold for like 30 seconds and the pieces are bonded since it literally melts and fuses the plastic together.

seams can then be sanded down softly with a bit of 800 grit for nubs then 1000 for fine polish.

if you follow the seams on the leg you can see the top of thigh is with sanding and in bevel of thigh is without sanding. once you sand a bit of the top away, the parts welded can hardly be seen since... they're now welded together. as for the edge, well, that's for all models, no edge is ever going to be perfectly aligned. model edges don't work that way.

thick cement is the worst since you end up with thick rolled goopy edges that need to be sanded down, and once sanded, you find a layer of dried cement that's gone white since you're shearing and putting stress marks on the dried cement rather than polishing welded plastic.
>>
>>6283255
the knee joint was also 2 parts. you can hardly tell it wasn't one solid piece after using the super thin cement and some quick sanding. the tamiya thin cement is my favorite.

Have any FA:G faceplates have started turning up on Shapeways or similar places? On the Customs thread, there's this blank Nendoroid lookalike that's printed via runners.

---From my breakdown of costs, it's about $30 tops to get a bunch of a set of 5 blank faces + hair runner from Koto. BTW, the blank faces are made of ABS plastic, so good luck trying to sculpt facial expressions.

Faceplates from the Taobao seller is gonna be around $15-18 according to my math, it's resin, but how well does it take to being carved?

Yes, FAG and MD are 1:1

This is a 10:1 Gourai. So if you imagine that this statue is how big a FAG would be if it was human-sized, then the plastic model would be 1:10. But the plastic models are officially their life-size.

Nah, there's no official scale for FAGs. The anime is just one of a possibility of settings Kotobukiya is providing. They outright said before that the anime doesn't mean you can't have 15 meter tall FAGs, 1.5 meter tall FAGs, etc.

nice doubles.

I feel one of my resin dyes may have also contributed to bubbles to form during the heat phase - see the arrows marked in blue. I've since switched dyes and have been getting better results. but the small pegs are still a problem. I can inject resin with a needle and syringe but I'd like to try something that can cast with simply the syringe without needle, and to be able to cast these faster.

I'm currently working on some molds with channels to feed resin to the bottom, and with air channels to release air upwards. we'll see how it works. if it doesn't work, I'll try the needle and syringe method.

Currently I've thought of two easier ways to make facial expressions without drilling and cutting resin.

1. Build up the face area with epoxy putty, making the open mouth area in reverse, then sand down the edges back into the face, etc.

2. Grind/putty down the area nice and flat and make the mouth area blank, like them figma blank faces and use flat decals/paint in the mouth expression, pic related.

Whichever way I might try it, doubtful I can get that "Stylet puffs her face all angry like" from the manga.
>>
>>6284432
Couldn't you just fill in the cavities in the FAG faces with something?
>>
>>6284455

I could do that and mix up a paint to approximate the colors. Reaper's line of paints has like, up to eight-ish skin colors and I can tweak from there.
>>
>>6284409
Have you tried lightly dusting the mold with baby powder and tapping the sides of it as the resin dries to shake the bubbles loose?
>>
>>6283838
40 dollar investment gets you as many plates as you need, really. One thing of oomoo is enough to make a good couple of molds even if your first one or two turn out shit, and one thing of the smooth cast resin would get you a few dozen faces at least.
>>
>>6284511
I'm aware (via MSDS and other safety sheets) you need to store the two part resin in a certain way with a lot of ventilation (not just the whole sanding or the whole resin setting thing) and my place doesn't really have any of either, sorry.

Didn't pay a cent and now I have some extra armor parts since they sent me a whole runner.
>>
>>6284520
Yeah, not really. An open window is all you need at most, unless you're casting tons and tons of shit at once in a small area. And the warnings for storing the resin is only for extended periods of time. Mine's just been on a table in my basement and it's fine for months at a time.
>>
>>6284520
>>6284644
It depends on what kind of resin you're using. Epoxy resin is fairly non-toxic. Polyester Resin is the stuff that smells like death and you need to be careful with. There's also polyurethane resin, but that's hard to deal with because any amount of moisture in the air will inhibit curing.

So for spare parts, not only do I need a middleman, but I need to actually mail them the "order spare parts sheet" that comes with the kit manual?

Here, am considering magnetizing chest pieces and head armor so I can just swap them around easily or use non-armor headpieces like funny hats. Will require epoxy putty, and repainting the pieces but hey, that's how it is.

Last thing: The pink hair pieces that gets bundled as a bonus runner? The color is a very neon pink, like the stuff of highlighters. It's a really tacky, plasticky looking color. One of those really obnoxious /90s anime wacky hair colors, to rephrase it.

If you're in the US you don't need a middleman. You email their product support and they'll usually just mail you the part you need cut off from the sprue. In my case I needed 4 parts from a 10 part sprue so they just sent me the whole thing. Their customer service is really good, you just need the part number, ignore the moonspeak spare part request sheet, I think that's more for people who want to buy extra runners for customs.

According to the manuals, FA:G faceplates are ABS plastic.

There's no way you can carve them, so to make new facial expressions you need a thin layer of epoxy putty and stuff to form around the basic mouth shape you want, and at the same time, the layer has to be thin enough that it doesn't stick out further than the cheeks do.

Sorry folks.

I found Hres's right arm had a hard time staying in the socket. A bit of Pledge Future should fix it.

Jinrai similarly had the cover part of one of her knee plates not wanting to fit the joint part of the plate properly, so I just replaced both plates with Energy Shields.

Learn to do it yourself. The equipment you need won't cost more than $50 or so, and from then on it'll be $20 a batch at most.
>>
>>6285386
I think those 50$ + 20$ is exactly what he means... Similarly, the initial cost keeps me from airbrushing knowing that I'd only do it twice a year at most.

>>
>>6285391
The initial cost would be about $50, not $50+20. Once you have the equipment it'll be less than $20 each time you have to do it again.
>>
>>6285419
Still, at this rate it is cheaper to just get them from Taobao and even Koto is comparable...

>do things like get two complete MDs out of one kit.
not any of the anons in the comment chain but I been pondering about that for some time. Has anyone actually tried that or at least sat down and worked out what would be needed to do that and the viability of it? I do not yet have an MD, but that is something I been curious about since I been dabbling with mold making for a while now to replace parts on some things and make entirely new items.
>>
>>6285391
What equipment would you need? Aside from silicone and resin?

I really, really hope they aren't like this the whole series. Not a huge fan of the "sexy rapist twins" gimmick.

I've got mixed feelings, plot-wise and fun-wise it's a pretty bad and cheap gimmick, but... they do things to my yuri-loving reproduction organ.

that is your most important and expensive equipment. If you are smart and depending on the size of your parts you need to recast, that can last you a decent amount of time. Your investment pays off a lot more when you can reuse molds often though.

I personally try to save as much mold as possible by shredding molds I know I will never need again. use the tiny bits to help fill in the new mold but you need to be careful and not have any recycled material anywhere near the item getting molded cause that can cause bubbles, texture issues, etc in the mold itself which is very bad. But It is great to use with awkwardly shapped items, like something long and curved that results in a lot of unused space in the mold.
>>
>>6285562

What kind of silicone you're recasting with matters too. There's generally two kinds of silicone mold-making compound, tin-based and platinum-based. Tin is a lot cheaper, platinum is a lot more expensive.

Most of the time tin will get you by just fine, but it takes 2-4 weeks (depending on temperature) to fully cure. Until then it's constantly leeching a tiny amount of alcohol, which can inhibit the curing of some products.

If you're impatient like me, you might wind up with a never-curing slime on all your casted parts and not know why. It took forever for me to research what was going wrong, since all the online guides only said 'lol you're just not mixing your resin well enough'

Hope this bit of info is helpful.

Easycast Silicone Putty is kind of like a Milliput mold but softer. I could theoretically shape it like a typical silicone mold.

After that, the prices for silicone rubber starts shooting up to the low 50's up to nearly 70 for the smallest batches. Those ones are the typical brands people use around here.

There's not much choices for resin after artists' jewellry resin. It's pretty much polyester resins after that. Can I get by with the Easycast brand and just fix the errors with epoxy putty?

I emailed [email protected]. They did mention that spares aren't available as needed but they can get them. They ended up having to get mine from Japan in the end. Here's the exact message:
The purchase of replacement sprues is a service only available to residents of Japan.

However we do offer complimentary replacement pieces as available to those located in North America.
Were you needing the entirety of those sprues, or were there specific pieces you needed?
>>
>>6284734
I had no complaints with my experience.
>>
>>6285682
I wonder how much the shipping and service is gonna be (compared to middlemen)
>>
>>6285687
I paid nothing, it was complimentary. It was a knee joint on mine that failed, the peg must have been slightly oversize because as soon as I slid it on I saw white stress marks. Eventually it just snapped.

On the off chance you got it from HobbySearch they're generally real good about finding replacement parts, I got a replacement for a Kato train set that was long out of projection from them and I didn't even buy the set from them (but I do generally have a fair amount preordered through them).

They're Maisto bikes.
They assemble in minutes, take mild customization well, and fit FAGs.

I like 'em, but now that I've got 2 for my ninjas, I'll probably hold out for the Gigantic Arms Bike.

Built Gourai as my first model kit when she was first released years ago so I'm touching her back up.

For the folks who built FAG Gourai

What paint did you use for the armor assuming you'd want to keep her non-custom painted?

I thought about using Tamiya XF72
(JGSDF Brown) but it seems too dark.

Airbrushing for reference.
