It's more a case of certain releases having more backing behind them.
Something from a more obscure or less popular series like Yakuza is going to be meh, especially if it's not a cute girl and in a more realistic artstyle at that.
As far back as 13 figma ago their quality has been good, if not great. The ones that aren't? A certain detective, an OP baldy (but that was design rather than detailing)

All that said, A.G.P. is more about its mechanics than even the girls that wear them.

From everything I've seen (still don't have any yet) they're good enough to blend in with figma now unless you're really trying to spot the difference.
On top of that, it IS Sonico and a 10th Anniversary release too. I can see them putting in extra effort for that (like web-exclusive Takao, or more recently Gore Magala of Monster Hunter)

Well, you mentioned one of the things that make them better than funko pops, which is more articulation, plus accessories and swappable faces and limbs for different poses. They also retain the character's design better, but in a cute, chibi-ish style. And of course they're made of much better plastic. Basically they don't look like funko pops at all besides maybe that they both have big heads on little bodies. It's understandable if you don't find the appeal in the proportions, though.

VF-1S Messer edition. My word this came out of the blue. I like his scheme so much more on this Valkyrie where it's not as spread out and the purple stands out more.
His VF-31 is underwhelming in comparison, especially compared to Mirage's, yet I can't be sure her scheme would look better than Messer's on this VF-1S.
I'm looking forward to her VF-1EX HMR though.

Mezco's meteoric rise in popularity within the toy collector community (and the equally meteoric backlash) is the most fascinating thing to me.

No toyline is perfect. Even Figuarts and Figma shit the bed sometimes. Hell, I think Hot Toys are massively overrated and barely poseable.

The important thing is that Mezco is listening to feedback and improving accordingly. The ankle rocker is improving slowly but surely and the new Shazam figure has wire lining in the cape instead of the bizarre figure stand attachment their caped figures used to come with.

Akko anon here. I admit more articulated figures are nicer, but I think i just enjoy the possibility for funny poses with cute characters.

Also, but this is more on a personal level, I usually saw those kind of japanese figures at conventions before discovering online stores, and there you usually only see super sexy, almost naked statues or Nendos, and while I do love sexy naked women, i prefer my toys to be just cute. So probably I started developing my taste for nendos back then.

Also Little Witch Academia doesn't seem to be very popular and I want to support the show as much as I can. the fact that i already wanted a Nendo is a pretty neat bonus for me.

Unless Kill la Kill is getting a season 2 or movie I don't know about, I don't see the price shooting way up. She wasn't initially a big seller in Japan. I think remaining stock sold when Satsuki came out and the dub premiered on Toonami, long after she was out of production. High demand after the fact, leading to this second run which will drive the prices way down again.
