i believe it's called zebra striping. usually happens if you're using fluorescent lights and you don't use the proper settings. it stands out more when using a white background. i would suggest using tungsten, strobe, or another source of daylight that can replace fluorescent.

the link says it happens with LEDs as well. might be the frequency. i've only had it happen with fluorescents. there's always the choice of using tungsten with some CTB gels over your lights to get more white/daylight looks

This was inspired by a fellow /toy/ soldier. 'Low level RPG adventurer' was how he described it, something like that.

I always thought it was a cool idea so here's my take on it. There's a small axe in his left hand but it ended up getting lost during editing cause of how dark the lower half of the pic is.
All done with the camera on my LG G4 and the photoshop express app.

You could try to adjust your shutter speed to match your mains frequency.

So if you live somewhere with ~120volt/60Hz, set your shutter speed to 1/60. If you live somewhere with ~230/50Hz, set it to 1/50.

From someone who has been making a steady uphill battle of trying to get good photos for the past like, 2 years, 4 things have fixed almost all of my issues.

Getting two 50 cent pieces of white posterboard. One to put on the wall, one to just sit on a flat surface (aka: my desk).

Getting an entirely new digital point and shoot camera, which you probably don't need to do. Mine was incredibly old and terribly shit, even for a P&S camera. My new camera is better in every single way. I went as cheap as I could, because I'm a poorfag. Got a Canon PowerShot ELPH 180. Again, you probably don't need to do this, you probably just need better lighting. Lighting is everything. Also if your camera has an ISO setting, set it to as low as it can go.

Buying some LED desk lamps at Walmart ($10 apiece). I only needed 1 because I happened to have a standing lamp that has a bendable 40 watt reading light, and it's positioned over the desk I take my photos on. Probably not the best thing to do, but it was cheap and it's working for me. I'm sure someone could probably suggest something better.

And 4 would be just getting a photo editing program. I use GIMP, which is free.
>>
>>6248477
Thanks for the tips, I think my camera is fine like you said but I hadn't messed with the ISO setting at all. I'll look into the other things you mentioned as well.

Set it to A for the time being and turn the flash off. Read your intruction manual or maybe get a book on your specific camera.

Check out YouTube videos on photography basics.

In the meantime, what are your questions?
>>
>>6251689
I'm using a canon 70d. I have a well lit environment that I take photos in. I use a combination of warm and cool lights, depending on what feel I want from the photo. The canon 70d has an 19 point auto focus system, but from time to time I use the manual focus ring too.

This is the issue. In viewfinder mode, I have no real issue with focusing. When I switch to live view ( on the lcd screen ), the camera seems to have difficulty focusing. I have it in M mode, so I'm controlling the aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings. I have the aperture on the lower side and the ISO too, since it's a well lit area and the shutter speed set to high to avoid motion blur. But I can't fathom focusing out.

Should I just look up tutorials on focusing or is there something I might be doing wrong with the general settings right now?

If I'm understanding you correctly you're using different light temperatures?

If the camera can't compensate with sunlight (the best light) it means you're indoors-- dio guy, probably ACBA (shame on you)

It sounds like you need to switch your metering setting, specifically to spot metering

Take the whole indoor diorama thing and throw that out the window and teach yourself how to actually shoot. Everything else will come together later.

Take your toys outdoors or at least by the window and learn basic photography. If you need to do a lot of post editing shoot in RAW. Yes I said post, everyone does post. I don't know why the ACBA makes such a big deal about not doing any post when literally every photographer ever knows it's just part of the processes.

That's why when you look at toy photography pics you'll notice that the best pics are from outside the USA because they actually focus on the **photography** part.

Name sounds familiar, but doesn't ring a bell proper.

Nah, this short "story" was a comprehensive test using these ~5" Walking Dead figures with my ~5.5" SH Figuarts. Without giving away the scale difference, I wanted to see if I could capture

>Being attacked by monsters
>Attacking SHFs
>Standing idly by
>Being rescued
>Carrying prolonged interactions in a longer photoshoot

And transforming as a recent idea. As primarily a Kamen Rider fan, it was thrilling to replicate a transformation eveb if the characters didn't match and poses couldn't be exactly 1:1. I now want civillian Rider SHFs even more.

I'm no fan of TWD. I can't even remember the girl's name. However, seeing them presented me with the idea of having generic civillians to expand my ideas. Too tempting not to try.

I'd say the shoot went really well. Despite the necessary extra effort, it was really fun. It was like a babby version of Godzilla scale manipulation, which I always admired. Having civillains around also really accentuates super heroes and villains is a way that heroes and villain can't do with each other. Heroes look powerful and villains look intimidating. Lovely. If McFarlane made these things .5" larger and didn't mass produce them with the shittiest warped feet I have seen collectively in any toyline, I'd be a regular customer instead of a guy buying them sparingly on chump change.

Yeah. It was done personally as reference to Kuuga's infamous fucking with the light whenever the villains were on screen.

I was actually gonna do every shot with Daguva pre-Kuuga. However, I concluded that I would probably be the only one who enjoyed mimmicking that effect. In a non-toku centric thread, I doubt anybody would get it anyway. I really like how the camera picked up Daguva's details.

So I scrapped it, save for that image. It was left that way to accentuate a fakeout of using a Kuuga villain instead of zombies. Also the photo of Daguva in this set >>6252194 , though that was an accidental upload. This here is proper version, unmodified.

>more often than not you can get better results using your own lights than relying on the sun

I was suggesting the Anon learn how to shoot under the sun because the purest form of white light is the sun. Don't argue with me on this--- it just is. If you learn how to shoot and how to expose under the sun then you can start approximating studio lighting with greater ease.

Don't get your panties in a twist because I dissed the ACBA. Part of my problem with them is they tend to focus on indoor shooting and very rarely have quality lights that produce white light and they almost always have poor white balance as a result. To be honest I've only ever been impressed with three of them and they still fucked their pictures up by having those retarded cutout letters.

Anyway, back to my point: The sun will always produce better light than any artificial source. If you really, really, really feel strongly about it then go start a thread and get laughed at over at /p/ because I don't have the time, energy, or interest in explaining to you exactly why you're fucking wrong.

Yeah. Reviewing the litter for my experiment, it seems likeness is a common complaint. Being so small probably doesn't help either.

That's when the magic of not being a fan kicked in. He could look like Jim Carrey for all I care. Since I'll never portray these figures as Walking Dead characters, how good the likeness is doesn't concern me thankfully. They'll be random shmucks.

What does bother me though is the engineering. This Daryl is the best figure in terms of articulation. Mcfarlane barely gave a shit to give even 90% of that collective range of motion on anybody else. The early releases had the most god awful idea for hip articulation I have ever seen. Many times basic hinges can't even do 90 degrees . That hurts photography ideas so much. If I ever buy more, I may experiment in "surgery" to get them to move more. I don't care about sculpt that much, especially for a show I don't care about.

>>6253936
The reason I'm not a fan of TWD is because I've been driven away from the oversaturation of zombies as a plot element. However, zombies look good in plastic under the right sculptor. May pick some up.

All the fucking time dude. I tend to find inspiration just by fucking around with them at home. I'll fiddle around and then start playing things out in my head and the ideas start coming. Sometimes a movie or TV show or book will have a scene that inspires me. Other times I get the idea from seeing a location I like. I very rarely go out and shoot without having planned the shots or "story" firsthand. I take a lot of shots at home as test shots or "concept art" before doing it on location. Pic related is an example.

Irrelevant. One person's shit work doesn't magically become great if the person critiquing it is better or worse at it.
'Let's see you do better' is a fallacy that people who can't take criticism run too when they're called out.

Yeah. I've heard about Reedus enough secondhand and have seen him.

Funny enough, that vague Asian twist to his likeness is what got me to photograph a transformation scene. Though it was initially meant to be Amazon Alpha, since Jin has a but of a biker motif. However, Jin's transformation into Alpha is just turning a handle on his belt. Even if I could get the belt off, it wouldn't fit Asian Reedus's waist.

So my logic turned to "Well, this little guy doesn't look much better or worse than Joe Odagiri looks these days". Thus, Kuuga was used instead. Having a compatible villain and being able to do enough tricks with the camera to mimic Kuuga's transformation pose to at least 80% helped a lot as well.

You're half right there Snake everybody has an opinion but just because he has an opinion doesn't mean anyone has to take it seriously or into consideration which nobody is and if Anon is going to be an outright dick about it he's opening himself up to challenge which it seems he can't deliver on.

I agree that if you're going to pretend you know better you should be able to prove it. Does he have a right to his opinion, sure but it's a meaningless opinion without substance. I mean, the point of the thread is to show off toy photography and just with anything else the layman has no right to be that smug if they can't play the game themselves

Have you ever handled a Revoltech?

I really, really like him, despite some flaws you can work around.
Namely the hips. They're on ball joints with limited range with the thigh swivels acting as extensions of the hip range as they're cut on an angle. It's unintuitive and takes getting used to.
You won't be getting one thigh over the other but aside from that, they offer a ridiculous range.
Another gripe of mine is that the knee isn't always properly aligned due to the angled thigh cuts. It's impossible to have the knee face the way it's 'supposed to' in certain poses BUT Yamaguchi sculpted it this way on purpose and the area around the knee is serviceable as a faux-knee. Sounds very weird and shitty and to be honest it IS less than ideal but you'll get used to it.
Same with the gappy shoulders (incredible range though!). You'll have to fiddle and work with it.

I understand if that sounds off-putting but this is the closest anyone has ever come to my dream Spider-Man.

You may want to have a look at some competent posing of Spidey to convince yourself:

Also look up hot.kenobi on instagram.

tl;dr
Yes it is a lot of fun, but maybe not for you.

you're kinda wrong there.

pure daylight is around 5600K, which is white. when you go beyond 5600 you get more blue.

what I assume he meant is sunlight at it's peak shines white off an object, you only get tungsten/yellow light when the sun is rising or setting because of our atmosphere as the sun passes through more air at those times, giving off a yellow glow.

natural light is good to work with, it's just the problem of diffusing it right and timing but usually if you take a photo outside and set your white balance accordingly you should be able to get a decent photo
>>
>>6254138
>>6257037
also I work in a film rental house where I work on studio lights all day (HMI, tungsten, LEDs). HMIs (daylights) are meant to replicate daylight, and they do have a bluish tone when you strike them but once they get up to temperature they are supposed to be white daylight.

I kinda know what I'm talking about here.
>>
>>6251928
when you use live view you're probably using the video function right? use the magnification button to zoom in a little and use the manual focus to get sharp.

remember this: the more light you have, the more shallow the depth of field will be. the less light the more you'll be able to get into focus.

if you open up your aperture your subject will be more in focus that the bg. to keep both in focus but retain light you need to stop down and then play with the ISO and shutter speed to still allow a good amount of light in while not flooding the picture with light
>>
>>6257037
At least you sound intelligent when you're wrong, not like that other Anon.

There's no such thing as white light; pure physics baby. Our subjective observation is what makes it white or yellow or green or blue.

Also, for the record, I don't think there's anything inherently terrible about shooting outdoors or not. What you lack in control you make up for in lack of set up time so it evens out.

My issue was with that other jackass that said shooting outside is the ONLY way to get a good photo is to shoot it outside. And while you and I might disagree on color temps, we can surely both agree that there's nothing better or worse about shooting outdoors.

for some reason, its incredibly hard for me to depict to characters fighting each other on an even level.

1. its really hard to find a good angle, that shows both characters equally. both characters facing the camera is virtually impossible.

2. it's hard to make both characters appear evenly strong, without one beating the crap out of the other. Most ACBA guys show batman knocking another character out, but not both fighting equally.

i have both; PAK Cloud and Sephiroth for like two weeks now and i just can't get it right, it's driving me insane.

them being superhuman characters with elegant, but powerful movements at the same time makes it even harder. like, sephiroth basically stands still most of the time (at least in the cutscenes and movies i've seen) and cloud dances around like crazy, but still moves really elegant. Formless, shapeless. like Water.

God, i'm stuck at this shit. i hate toyphotography sometimes.

>There's no such thing as white light; pure physics baby.

Stop it, you're embarrassing yourself. Besides I already pointed out that its not like you've contributed anything. Its like a virgin trying to give relationship advice.

Take a minute to learn a thing or two:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visible_spectrum

>that other jackass that said shooting outside is the ONLY way to get a good photo is to shoot it outside.

No I didn't. I suggested learning to shoot outdoors and then working with artificial light after learning basic photography principals. I never said shooting outdoors makes a picture better, I said sunlight is the best light. Refer to >>6252048

The lighting on this >>6256766 wouldn't look as good if I tried to shoot it on a dio with lights. Hell, even when I shoot indoors I use sunlight. Pic Related is another example.

>>6257498
>it's hard to make both characters appear evenly strong, without one beating the crap out of the other. Most ACBA guys show batman knocking another character out, but not both fighting equally.

Yeah, part of what I don't like about he ACBA is that the leadership are mediocre at best but everyone tries to emulate certain things they do. D_Amazing is the worst offender when it comes to "superhero pounding on a group of mooks"

Try to make it a struggle, like pic related or a sword clash. You can also levitate Sephiroth and have Cloud in a dynamic pose like he's running or in mid sword swipe. Whatever you go with I'm sure it'll turn out great.

I'm not wrong, I work in photography and video dude.

If it's physics then explain it. Daylight is meant to be close or almost exact to white light, and if it has a blue tinge it goes beyond 5600K or you're just perceiving it differently because I assume no person sees light/color the exact same way.

Also the anon you're battling pretty much schooled you so you're either a shitposter or actually don't know what you're talking about.

>At least you sound intelligent when you're wrong, not like that other Anon.

>>6255866 here already did a great job describing it, but yeah, even as a Revoltech fan there was a learning curve for me when posing Spidey. There are so many different ways to utilize the articulation to make the perfect pose you want. It's definitely Yamaguchi's most "Yamaguchi" figure to date, so take that as a positive or a negative in regard to your own tastes.
