>Is an airbrush really worth the $2-300? I'm just getting into painting, and don't know if I'm going to be doing anything like weathering or even serious amounts of painting, and it really just doesn't seem to be worth the investment. Is it really that much better than hand painting with a brush?

$300 is a good estimate of the cost of the airbrush, compressor, paints, mixing tools, cleaning tools, respirator, painting tools (masking, holding, etc), and maybe even a booth.

it's worth it if you want to enjoy airbrushing. It's not necessary if you want to enjoy an MD or FAG. It can maximize your enjoyment of a gundam.

pick up airbrushing if you want to pick up airbrushing. not because you want to pick up gundam/models/whatever.

You should try it. Hres is an especially long one to finish, but you can take your time building her.

Though relatedly to Hres, what's my beg option for a peg thickener? One of her arms is very loose on mine.

superglue or some sort of varnish

Well, it's not great where it's colder either. I live scandinavia and there's no way in hell I can paint during the fall or half the spring, too humid. Same for most of the winter. Not sure if I can if it's low humidity and below/close to zero though, never tried.

Use a bit of Future floor polish, or plastic cement. For Future dip the joint in the solution and wiggle it around in the socket, then separate and let them dry for 24 hours. If you want a more in-depth guide I wrote the Nendoroid general's guide, and there's a joint tightening tutorial at the end so check that out.

If you go the plastic cement route make sure it isn't the "thin" variety with less dissolved styrene, and only apply it to one side. Don't join the parts for about an hour.
>>
>>6217219
>>6217236
I paint indoors with a mobile aircondotioner. Using that, a little ventilation hood, and a gasmask with filters for organic solvents I've never had a problem painting with lacquers so long as it wasn't actively raining. I use a water knockout trap that I submerge in ice water connected to my pressure regulator just to make sure the air is dry for the paint, and I keep a little portable temperature/humidity monitor in my garage so I'm positive conditions are adequate in that room.
>>
>>6217398
No offense to you, but I really can't recommend plastic cement for that kind of application. That shit melts the plastic, not thicken it up. You don't want to be putting that on pegs if you want them to stay intact.

Pledge Future or any other kind of noncorrosive acrylic finish, even just a varnish from Vallejo or Golden, is just fine. Superglue, aka cyanoacrylate, aka krazyglue, aka loctite is more permanent, but given the kind of skills I've seen from this thread, probably not the best choice either.
>>
>>6217411

Well, I'm currently using cans and handbrushing. And since the handbrushing needs primer (in a can) anyway, I can't do that when the weather is shit for weeks on end, either. Honestly though, a couple of weeks and the weather should be a lot better.
>>
>>6217416
It actually works surprisingly well. Yes, it dissolves plastic, but it also has plastic dissolved in it to help weld parts together. It also isn't aggressive enough of a solvent to liquefy whatever you put it on. If you coat a part in a thin layer of cement it will eat away at the plastic, and then when the solvent evaporates it will leave behind a thin layer of clear plastic that has bonded with the original part. I use this technique all the time when building gunpla and have it on hand, and I typically save Future for PVC figures and such that have paint on them.

Don't believe me? Dip a scrap piece of runner in plastic cement, and let it cure without touching anything else (on an alligator clip painting stick). It won't dissolve, and there will be a thin coating on it.
>>
>>6217493
If you want additional definition or gradients on those spray canned parts like you see on airbrushed pieces, consider investing in a dry pastel set and a makeup brush.

Left is untreated. Right is dunked in plastic cement. Sorry for belaboring this, but I just wanted to prove the technique works. However, it can be easily fucked up and isn't reversible unlike Future, so it may be above some people's skill level.

I mainly try not to repeat colors.
I plan on starting a Sentai team with them, after all.

Recently, with Hres, I snagged a pic of her online, and messed with the colors in an art program until I got something I liked.
I ended up going pretty close to her originals, though.

>shave off most of the nubs with either godhands or a knife, then sand down the excess with 800 grit paper wrapped around a popsicle stick.

personally, I use the cheapest xuron clippers I can find to cut distal on the peg away from model, then shear off the peg til its as near as I can get to the model without inducing pressure stretch marks in the plastic. then I take the cheapest #15 blades I can find on ebay to shave the peg near level. I'll then seam weld with Tamiya extra thin cement, rubber bands to hold pieces together. they bond after a couple minutes, and I then wet sand with 800 grit for big clumps, and polish with 2000 grit. I tend to group the pieces, like I'll cut several pieces off tree, clip them all, then blade them all, cement them all, and finally sand each one down en masse.

I think it comes out pretty well, if you look at the outer most seams vs the inner seams that haven't been touched. pretty cheap too, I'm not spending much on these tools.

it's very zen, like I listen to music, speeches, or other such things as I'm doing this. my most latest guilty pleasure is head massage asmr. super tingly...
>>
>>6218469
Really? I'm planning on doing the opposite. I want all of my FA:Gs to have the same color scheme barring hair and skin tones. This would mostly be to give them easy cross compatibility with accessories and such, but I can't decide on a palate. Nothing too bright, and definitely no monochrome.

>>6218408
Hres is definitely proof that the line's quality is going up drastically, but she's number three for me. I'm quite partial to planes, and Baselard is my favorite Frame Arms by far so for me it's Stylet > Baselard > Hresvelgr > Gourai > Jinrai > Architect > Materia.
>>
>>6218610
Personally I find Jinrai hits just the right level of equipment where she's customizable but has character standalone. Hres having lots of gear is really nice, and I definitely want more like her, but I also have a lot more trouble thinking about how to customize her because she's already got so much she can do OOB. Of the five I have it's Jinrai > Hresvelgr > Baselard > Stylet > Gourai.

>All FAGs: Same color.
I would probably do this for something more homogenous, like Megami Device, or like this guy did with his awesome Gourai collection, but to me they're just too different. Gourai and Stylet will never be served by having the same colors, save for as a dress uniform.

Nominally, you could rationalize Stylet, Hres and Baselard as "Air Force" but Bassy is clearly based around a space fighter, and Hres is such a radically different design from the ground up.

Gourai and Jinrai are nominally both ground units, so I could see doing them similarly, but I'm just too enamored of the Red Oni/Blue Oni presentation.

This is what I'm doing. Stylet is long range air support, Baselard is a bomber, and Hres is a more mobile fighter. Dressing them in white, royal blue, and gold.

The others are my ground team. Gourai is equipped with gatling guns and missiles, Architect is loaded to the gills with blades for CQC, and Jinrai is going to have the upper part of the Gigantic Arms strapped to her back (and probably Gourai's unused bazookas). They're mostly painted in panzer gray because I'm shit at camo.

The main reason I assume space fighter is that she's COVERED in multi-directional thrusters, and the anime preview shows her shields being individually flight capable, sort of like an R-Type or Gradius fighter.

If she was primarily atmospheric, she'd have more of her thrusters pointing in one direction.

Also, if she was a heavy gunship, I'm pretty sure she'd have larger breasts.

Griefen, as an example, is a gunboat, and she's pretty stacked.

Personally I am not a huge fan of using blades for tails. As adorable as Renge is, it is the one down side I have with her. The insane versatility the unit has as a swiss army weapon does make up for it. But I digress

I seen this thing recently, and also someone did up a nine tailed shadow fox Zoid in one of the image compilations i seen for this past wonfes. At least I think it was this wonfes, could have been that Kotobukiya celebration thing a little earlier. Regardless, unless it is feasible to easily cast the tail on my fox(got to check that), using shadow fox for the tails will get very pricey and fast.
>>
>>6219571
The Extend Arms shields definitely have the desirable fluff, but there's a lot of useless parts going into it too.

I'm also thinking you could put together some of the long arms from Flexible Arm B with the beam saber bits from Gunblade Lances, for fluffy tails when the blades are off to sword tails when they're on?

The available ones don't appeal to me much.
Once the SOL series comes out, that might change.
I'm pretty interested in the ones they debuted in Wonderfest, but it'll probably be Autumn before they come out.

I love the FAGs, and Megami Device are similar enough that I might grab one once I'm done building all the FAGs. Based on availability, of course.
Roadrunner looks like the most interesting one so far.

This also applied to the body I got at Wonder Festival, but they seem to have improved the torso joint so that it doesn't come off so easily. Unrelated: What will Koto do if they get to a point were there's as many FAGs as there are Frame Arms? Do you think they'll start making original designs for FAG? Or is that what Megami Device is for? Also is the Cross Frame thing meant to be a crossover FAG type thing?

The price on that WISM set is lower than when they were selling it at WF, putting into consideration the KRW > JPY exchange rate. Must be some incompetent scalping going on there.

Cross Frame is a super old kit line that was using the Frame Arms system to make kits for third party licenses, ala Border Break and stuff. This is them reviving that line with Frame Arms Girl and GaoGaiGar.

I'm pretty sure they're pacing themselves to avoid that. This year we're getting FAG Hresvelgr, FAG Innocentia, FA Reyfalx, FAG Hresvelgr=Ater, then whatever comes in the second half of the year. Ater's just a repaint with some parts changed out, and Innocentia's an original design that's basically just a base body. At Wonfest we got both the FA and FAG Byakko, art of a new FA, and art of FAG Griefen.

We might see some more FAGs based off FA customs, like Jinrai, plus variants like Gourai Kai, but it looks like they're aiming to pace themselves so that they don't run out of designs.
>>
Has anyone tried using camouflage stencils on FAGs or MDs? The ones I'm looking at specifically are the ones on fallouthobbies.com. Specifically the infantry-sized traditional camo in the pic. I'm kind of worried that the bigger size would be too big for the tiny FAG armor (Stylet's and Gourai's in particular) since their armor mostly comes in lots of smaller, disconnected pieces rather than a few big, contiguous ones, but I'm still not sure how well the smaller patterns will actually work. I wanted to ask you guys before I commit tho in case anyone actually has experience with these and can offer advice.
>>
>>6221390
Place the order anyway and set it to Private Warehouse. When it comes in you'll get a notification.
>>
>>6221467
the Megami line and the Cross Frame sub-line will help them a lot if they ever need to pad things out

but mostly what >>6221585 said, they got almost as much new Frame Arms coming as they got Frame Arm girls. Although I kinda hope they feel like they need even more padding,. It might mean they will put out a line of HMM Girls.

And that would be the day my wallet completely dies as my shelf becomes populated by animal robot girls.

I remember that shop imports gunpla as 1:10 ratio (generic rate, although official direct shop sells at 1:12),
but not koto's. even though they're official retailer for koto kits.
It seems to have megami at 1:10, and FAGs at 1:12. almost bargain for'em.
even Real type ver.s have no premium on it.
At the fact that other exclusive items(7-11 gundams & etc) were sold in a premium price,
I guess they just got a carton from koto itself

Honestly, I'm a snapfag for the most part and I still make stuff like >>6216375. The only paintwork there so far is rattlecans I used on Jinrai's skin-colored parts to give her a bodysuit, and depending on what kind of build you're after, you don't even need to do that.

Start simple. Get a girl you like, get some extra parts you think would go nicely with her. Some nippers and an Xacto knife from any hobby store is all you should need to build her if you're careful. Put her together, put the parts on, and you're done.

The pegs might be a bit loose, so you could try giving them a bit of Pledge Future.

You're also not supporting the gun particularly well, which is related to the pose being very awkward. Try drawing it back so that the stock fits under the shoulder. You want the right arm's elbow aimed diagonally downward, not out to the side.

>>6222022
I bought the kits specifically to make Gourai.
1 HG Noir
2 HG Jesta cannon
1 HG Zabanya
1 HG Unicorn FA

I don't know where I should use the rest of the parts X(
>>
>>6222040
>Some are a bit interesting, though I've found that compared to typical Bandai quality they're really lacking.
So the plastic is of lesser quality? M-maybe I can avoid falling down that hole then.

>>6222061
It's just that since my childhood BW Razorclaw's left claw broke without me doing anything to break it I've been distrusting of transparent plastic.

>>6222064
Which parts are from those? I'm just starting to get into this customizing stuff and I'm looking for ideas I could draw inspiration from.
>>
>>6222096
Hand, pistol, holster from Noir
Rifle from Jesta
Supporting joint and connecting parts from Zabanya
White piece in the middle of the back joint from Unicorn

Still have to figure out a way to place Unicorn's 3 gatling guns, Jesta's grenades, and Zabanya's missile packs.
>>
>>6222096
The plastic is about the same, but the part separation is really shitty and each kit only comes with at most one or two colors, with everything else being done with stickers that feel a lot cheaper than what they use on proper HG gunpla. MSG kits nearly all come in just dark gray, but that's a neutral color that usually looks okay OOB if you can't paint for shit.

BF stuff being designed with HG gunpla in mind also means it's kind of small for FAGs. There's circumstances where they're compatible, but really I'd only use them if you have a specific thing in mind.
>>
>>6222020
Oh no, I don't trust KotoUS to bring over anything of note. I'm just really disappointed in them almost constantly. I hope people have been sending them emails about these enough at least to make them miserable about them.
>>
>>6222123
minor additional advice:
Since HG Build Custom series are meant to be used with gunpla, some of the weapons will be too big for FAG/megami hands.
something like golden claw from matsuri weapon (Yup, mostly hand-sized close combat weapons), for example.

So a guy in my local hobby shop said that hand painting isn't good for anything but small details. Apparently it always comes out rough and never looks as good as airbrushing or spray cans.

Is hand painting really that much worse?
>>
>>6222253
You need an extremely large dose of gitgud compared to spraying
>>
>>6222253

You can get a fairly good look with some techniques, eg using liquid to level the surface, fine grit sanding, flat coats etc. But on macro photography all the small flaws will show.

For large surface areas I just hit it with canned tamiya spray for the base color.

It's certainly possible to get decent results.

>Is hand painting really that much worse?

Not really, it just takes a fuck load longer. Like waiting an hour to put on the next layer instead of anything between a couple of secs to a minute. So complex paint schemes take a very long time.

But it's not like the spray gun completely replaces brushes either - you still need them for aging and most special scale effects.
>>

>set of painting brushes around $30
>airbush $300
>airbrush is just better trust me
It was a store clerk wasn't it.
>>
>>6222401
Have you airbrushed before?
>>
>>6222401
Unless you're going to be like a master hand painter getting an airbrush is the way to go, but you don't need to spend $300. $300 should be the cost of your airbrush assembly including the airbrush, a stand, compressor, tubing, pressure regulator, and filters (optional).
>>
>>6222401
Airbrushing lets you have thinner layers, no brush strokes, and access to lacquers which level beautifully but can't be handbrushed.

But as that one anon said, get an airbrush if you want to get into airbrushing, not because you want to paint.
>>
>>6222396
This, and also thin your paints to the consistency of skim milk. You have to layer up more with hand brushing, but you can get some good results with a lot of patience.

as a fellow hand painter, I got to agree with them. we can't see the flaws with the naked eye but with how much cameras keep improving, the brush strokes that are there are more and more likely to show.

I do feel they are greatly exagerating things like 'must be master painter for great results' but doesn't mean they aren't completely wrong.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't have a ton of disposable income and I've already been spending a lot of it on the FAGs themselves. I guess an airbrush isn't entirely out of the question, but for now I'm only really interested in FAGs and MDs so I don't know if I'd get enough out of an airbrush to make it a worthwhile investment. Still, I'm not satisfied with the dullness of my Gourai's base armor and I do want to spice it up. I've decided that I'm going to try hand painting her and see how it turns out, then go from there.

>>6222401
It was, but he wasn't pushing the airbrush as much as he was trying to ward me away from hand painting. Convinced me to get a few spray cans instead. That's really the way to go if you're not the sort of person who can pour loads of money, time (maintenance) and space (booth and ventilation) on an airbrush.
>>
>>6222666

Handbrushing is cheaper than going all out on cans though.

Personally I use a mix of the two, handbrush any flat colour and cans for metallic/gloss.

Absolutely worth it for base coats. It's just that you'll quickly pay more cash for just that alone than you would've paid for an airbrush setup.

Using spray cans for a single kit can cost anywhere from $30-50, the same amount on handbrush paints would probably last around 10 kits.
>>
>>6222759
Depends on what you're doing. If you're only changing one specific color into a different one, and leaving most of the base plastic colors alone, spray cans can be economical. It's especially true if you're like me and you put the gray suit on nearly all your FAGs, so that one can can stretch across a few different kits. If you're doing full repaints, then you'll definitely want to use other methods, but I tend to keep my kits mostly the colors they are.

when it comes to hand paints, acrylics are the easiest, Vallejo in particular is very user friendly. Unfortunately Vallejo is very weak and even with top coats it still is pretty easy to scratch off. I have no experience with it yet but there is a new brand of acrylic paint that is supposed to be very good. Mission Model Paint, I seen quite a few people post reviews that all describe how shocked they are over the performance of the paint. Not sure how many of those people used it for hand painting though.

Those kits don't have that problem anymore. The issue was that the hip joints were all polycaps which would get loose. They've since replaced those with ABS joints, even for Gourai's rereleases, which are much nicer.

That said, the newer the kit, the more improvements they have. That's usually Kotobukiya's modus operandi. So Hresvelgr would likely be a solid choice for you if you want to just try it out.

>>6226959
I haven't really seen any cheap FAGs, just less expensive ones. You're also going to fuck your first kit at least a little so you'll want it to be something you don't actually care about. There are suggestions in the guide, but basically any IBO or 00 Gendum kit is going to be mostly decent or better quality, fine for practice and cheap. Also, get into seam welding quick; you'll want that for the skin portions of a FAG and it's really not that hard.
>>

>but basically any IBO or 00 Gendum kit is going to be mostly decent or better quality, fine for practice and cheap.
That doesn't sound too bad. I suppose I can pick one up for practice.

>Also, get into seam welding quick; you'll want that for the skin portions of a FAG and it's really not that hard.
Mind explaining seam welding a bit? I was confused while reading the guide.
>>

You can get one for ~$15 shipped to your house in two days at the speed of Amazon bullying the postal service. I highly recommend it.

>I was confused while reading the guide.
Typical 4chan response: read it again, faggit.

More helpful response: get some plastic cement, apply to edges keeping away from joints, stick together, let dry then sand. Bam. It basically is that simple.

Most helpful advice: look up a Youtube tutorial.

I'm sure it's easy but I never was very handy. A youtube tutorial it is. Thanks, anon.

It's much easier to get Shinkis nowadays. It'll never be like the great crash when rare shinkis were like $20, but AmiAmi and Mandarake have reasonably priced pre-owned ones. I'm looking to buy a few myself.

I'm also a friends friend, but I find myself wondering if I'd even want a Shink were they reasonably priced.

I have to admit, I'm a little hesitant to dive right into a pre-owned shinki.
Maybe it's just that I've been on 4chan too long, or that I've been friends with too many gross people, but all it would take would be one strange smell coming out of the box to make me regret it.
Does anyone have any good/bad experiences with pre-owned shinks from AmiAmi and Mandarake?

Also, hella cute picture there.
>>
>>6227107
More of a general question than anything, but what's the point of buying a used gunpla/FAG/Shinki/etc. anyway, if you lose half the joy of not building it yourself?

The left arm's from a Durga, the right arm's from a Ji-Dao. There's also two Gunblade Lances, a Flexible Arm B, a Propellant Tank Square and a Propellant Tank Round going into it, plus a custom chestpiece. The hands are the Wild Hand set, and the elbow connectors I think have to come from an Architect since I'm pretty sure Jinrai doesn't come with copies.

If you're going to make one, make sure you get her a BMX bike.

Once upon a time Shinkis were niche and plentiful. Not many people gave a shit about Shinkis, so prices were slashed as retailers attempted to clear stocks. The USD to JPY exchange rate was also very favorable for Americans, making prices even lower. Then, the anime came along, and the market exploded, prices were raised, and Shinkis became more rare. The market, years after, is starting to deflate, but prices are only getting closer to MSRP rather than pre-boom.

Poor Zyrdarya though. She has a horrible case of plasticizer sweat, which is sadly normal for her. My other two are great, though. I have had to break out the clear nail polish to make sure pegs fit snugly, but that kind of goes with the territory too.
