May Day is plenty her own thing. She played basket ball, She loves her baby brother and is excited about being a big sister, she she was inspired by the lessons her parents give her. She doesn't need an Uncle Ben because the core principal she's hear her whole life is "With great power comes great responsibility" so it creates a nice parallel to her father's origin. Her relationship with her parents and supporting staff are all her own. She doesn't have a Daredevil she has Dark Devil who is also his own character, she doesn't have an Uncle Ben because her lesson wasn't about learning to be responsible via tragedy it was finding out what that responsibility means and how she can use her powers.

She carried the entire MC2 franchise on her shoulders, she had her own roster of villains her own comrades. Her own iconic moments that certainly parallel Peters but stand on their own.

Gwen's not her own thing and all that bullshit is shallow superficial window dressing. The only reason anyone likes her at all is the costume which frankly isn't half as good as the Reily suit.
