For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

Is there a list of aftermarket joints that are good for scratchbuilding?

Like Kotobukiya or Mr Hobbybase joints. Maybe certain lego joints.

It seems like aftermarket joints are out of fashion, not seeing a whole lot of them.

Nice boat man. Might be more at home in Scale Model General, might be more appreciated.

But anywhere is fine man, good job with your boat man. You should post an image with a quarter for scale. Or a quid or coca-cola 12oz or something.

First fucking rule: you shoulda done your research first to know what you're getting into.

Anyway, the MG is worlds better. The RG has a whole host of issues and to top it off, the molded gold parts are all soft-edged and mushy looking. Yeah, they're nice and chromey, but I'll take the crisp sculpted detail on the MG any day, thanks. Just take your time and paint those shits up good. Your MG will look great when it's done.

My brother in arms! There is a surprising lack of decals from what I can see. Holding off on building mine until I feel confident, or buy a pair of God Hands to reduce the nubbage on the navy plastic.
>>
Recently I've become enamored with non-conventional panel lining colors (ie, anything besides black, grey, or brown). Does anyone have any recommendations for good thin colored pen brands that will work? I'm particularly interested in finding white, silver, and gold liners, but will take any other suggestions as well.
>>
>>6179052
Other than black, 0.20 mm Sakura Microns come in red, green, blue, purple, and light brown (they may also have orange, yellow and pink).
>>
>>6178963
The MG is like 4-5 years old now isn't it? And you should have done your research on that. The part separation on the RG was heavily promoted before its release due to the amount of complaints over the MG and HG emblems. Overall though the MG is the better kit. It's a lot more stable.
>>
>>6179130

the MG will always be more stable than an RG, if that's your criteria why bother mentioning
>>
>>6179130
Just over 8 years, if you count from the original Ver. Ka release. Almost hard to believe it's been that long.

The Ver Ka and titanium both do, but they don't fit properly and the nature of the gilded parts makes getting rid of air bubbles difficult, even with mr setter

Isn't this the kinda thing where you would do a wash/reverse wash or whatever it's called where you spray the trim color on the whole piece, then spray the main color on top and rub it off of the raised trim pieces?

You might want to hit it with a flat coat. Ships usually aren't this shiny.
>>
>>6179196
Again, I'm shit at painting, so doing washes would end up looking 5000x worse for me. Hand painting the lines is my only real option
>>
>>6179216
imo, doing a wash would be easier than hand painting. You literally just coat the entire piece twice then use a q-tip and lighter fluid to rub off the raised pieces. Seems like the edges would look neater that way than trying to do it by hand, but I'm just starting to get into painting kits, so I can't say from experience whether that's actually true.

When buying on amiami with preorders and non-preorders in the same order, do they ship the order all at once once the preorders comes in, or do they ship what they can, then the preorders separately?

That's a good idea. I should do the same. Especially since my next few builds are all darker shades of blue.

How do I go about designing good looking scribed lines, ones that fit in with like the panel lines on any kit?

>>6179429

That's a good general tip, but even then it's tricky and subjective. Look at Bandai themselves, the differences between the MG 2.0, Origin, OYW and the 3.0 are immense. It's just about what looks good to you, and what you can achieve.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I always try using mechanical pencil first on an assembled plastic kit, or trying things out in MS paint over the top of photos of the kit. I also look at, but never SAVE other customs of the design, so that I can notice things I like, but not copy them. Most of the time though, I don't look at anything.
>>
>>6179429
Take into consideration how the panel lines on your kit are done.
Are they seemingly random, or look like the pieces would be assembled in a specific order, or need to allow access to important parts underneath the armor?
You could even just find line art or use an actual image of the kit and add your own lines over the top of it digitally to experiment with how it might look.

I also think you only get so far with just line scribing, because you really need to have a balance of both adding and taking away. The combination of the two is what makes things look more interesting overall.

Are there any improved aftermarket sets for the RG Red Frame Astray? Its faceplate is really ugly, why did they make it so strange? The slits are spaced out way too far and the plate is up too high, giving is a strange expression. I don't know what to make of this thing.
>>
>>6179311
Ship what they can as soon as possible.

HLJ is the only one that will hold your stuff and ship them all together via their private warehouse feature. This can potentially save you a bunch of money! They will only hold things for up to 60 days though, then they start getting auto-shipped in the order you bought them in.
>>
Waiting on restocks sucks. Currently waiting for my MG tallgeese. How about you guys?
>>
>>6179151
This may be too late if you already flatcoated it, but for future reference at least:

- Keep a pot of Mr. Paint Remover on hand. If I mess up edges like that, I just dip a toothpick and gently scrub around the edge a bit to clean it up. Sometimes I also need to use a q-tip.

- I was really frustrated by brush-painting the gold trim on the Sinanju until I discovered Gundam Markers. The chisel tip means that if I'm careful, I can just glide it along at an angle across the raised parts. If your hand can stay relatively steady, the surface tension of the paint actually contains it entirely on the raised portions of the plastic! I had such an easy time with sleeves (and my Sinanju) after that.

Thanks for replying. I just wanted to be clear on one more thing, it says that they can combine pre-orders that are in the same month, so if I pre-order say both the RG Amatsu and 1/100 Bael, they'll still ship together because it's in the same month?

White primer if you're painting white or are using a bright, vibrant color. Gloss black for candy. Grey should be fine for everything else.

I may have messed up my first attempt at seam welding and painting. I get my Gyancelot all welded up so in preparation for priming, but now I'm seeing that may not have been the correct order.

In which order do the people that are good at this do it? I know the guide suggests not even welding arm parts and shit.

>>
>>6179980
Don't they use the generic GN drive LEDs?
>>
>>6180104
Be careful about >>6180118's suggestion for painting white as the colour of the plastic can show through even with multiple coats. I prime black when painting white. It takes a few coats but turns out alright.
>>
>>6180036
If you're willing to do it in a kinda roundabout way, I'd recommend going about it in something like this:
>make mold of lower body
>cast copy of it; doesn't need any fine detail
>add putty/epoxy/etc. to make the shape of the shirt - turn the waist and upper legs into a small cone, basically, keeping the waist detail intact
>once that cures, paint plasti-dip over the cloth sculpt you made to cover it in a thin layer
>once that cures, use a scalpel to trim it to shape and cut it free
>attach it to your actual kit
You should end up with a perfectly-sized/shaped piece of rubbery plastic.
>>
>>6180218
I feel like it could do with a couple more highlights of yellow or blue to break up the big clump of white - maybe some of the skirt details or segments of the legs. And those pistons on the arms would probably look nice in some sort of metallic shade.

So I recently found an old, used airbrush and small air compressor.

Should I bother getting into airbrushing or is that "too much"?
Or should I start with other sorts of painting tech and work my way up to airbrushing?

I've been building for about 3 months now but have never touched any form of real paint.

first learn how your old airbrush works. Identify its model and look for it on internet, learn how to disassemble it for cleaning and maintenance.

I'd say you should get used to it first and go for a mid-season upgrade after you're experienced with basics

All the panel lining tutorials go full Dalong with dark ink. Maybe it is just me, but I feel grey is better with white, and so on. Thoughts?
>>
>>6181716
If tutorials are going full dalong, they're likely doing it wrong. Dalong purposely panel lines too heavily so you can clearly see them for review purposes.

YES, most definitely, yes. You should never do black panel lines on white unless you're going for a cartoony look. Grey is the commonly accepted panel lining color for white. I also like to occasionally match my panel line color to my plastic, ie lining red plastic with dark red marker.
>>
>>6181716
Dalong makes thick, dark panels on purpose because he's reviewing the kit and wants the panel lines to really stand out so that you can see where the details are easier.

Does top coating mask any little imperfections in a kit? Like tiny dings and scratches from sanding, filing, and buffing? I think I'm going to top coat my barbados, but I wasn't sure if I needed to get everything really cleaned up before hand.
>>
>>6181823
General rule of thumb is that a matte topcoat will mask tiny imperfections while a gloss topcoat will make them more prominent. If you're in doubt, though, I'd just recommend getting some fine sandpaper and smoothing down any remaining nubs.
>>
>>6181830
Cool. Would there be any reason not to do a matte coat first to cover your mistakes and then gloss coat over that?

Most of the flaws in this kit are little marks around he feet and hidden away spots in the frame from filing nubs off.
>>
>>6181912
>do a matte coat first to cover your mistakes and then gloss coat over that
>hide your mistakes and then expose them again
>does that make sense
what do you think, genius?
>>
>>6181925
It's literally the first time I've done this. That's why I'm asking. I wasn't sure if the matte would smooth it out enough to not show any mistakes when I glossed it.
>>
>>6181943
>matte would smooth it out enough to not show any mistakes
no, that is what putty does

matte coat makes the scratches harder to see, it's all purely optics
>>
>>6181950
Okay. Good to know.
>>
>>6181912
Dunno why that other guy was so snippy about it, but no, it doesn't really work that way. The matte coat doesn't fill in imperfections so much as it obscures them by giving them the same texture as the surrounding plastic. If you want to conceal imperfections AND have a gloss coat, you'll need to paint the kit.

It's one of the better Daban kits, though I've only built two including this one.
It's about the price of a legit mid-tier MG though, if you can get it for cheaps go for it.
This is mine with nothing much done aside from panel lining, waterslides, and painting some minor details.
Broke off the hip joint connecting the right leg because I fucked up following the instructions during assembly.
The beam rifle hip connection is too tight and broke off during removal so you might need to shave the male parts down.

Joints are nice and tight and it can hold a pose pretty well, though the combined beam rifles can't be held by only one arm.
Gold nubmarks are mostly hidden behind the armors and not glaringly obvious and looks great OOB next to my DM Destiny.
Pretty frustrating build but I'm content with the result.

Uhh guys im stuggling a lil bit, my panel accent doesnt want to flow ontop of future and when i use zippo lighter fluid to remove some residue it ends up eating through the future and removes some of the painted plastic, how many coats of future do you need? i only hand painted one coat of it.
>>
>>6182863
Try more than one, second wait longer for it to cure, at least few days. Third, use a paper towel to soak up as much of the fluid off the qtip or whatever your using. Fourth, use something that doesn't affect the future. Water washes, Pitt pens, oil washes etc.
>>
>>6182890
what do you mean use something that doesnt affect the future? dont people use tamiya panel accent on a clear gloss acrylic coat all the time?

Yeah, dont mix same with same.
Lacquer
Enamel
Acrylic
Oil
Water
Your paints work down that list and terribly well linearly and not at all going up. If your using acrylic clear coats, then you need to use oil or something like a Pitt pen to panel line.

Slight hindrance, still reaches.

It does have flaws though, the toe inner frame is made of super thin plastic, but you have to force it inside and have it clip in some pegs. Both of mine stressed instantly. Fingers are also ridiculously loose and fall out a lot. The sniper rifle's shape is wrong too. They gave it a pistol grip instead of a rifle grip.

What is this Full Armor Exia?
>>
>>6183356
The posability issues sound like user issue, or you got a bad mold, besides the shield. My F91 was really tight and held together pretty nicely.

The MG is insanely posable, but it was during a time when they were experimenting with miniature MS. F91 and crossbone MGs use 80% of the same inner frame, so they have just about the same issues.

The forearms are connected to a small peg, so they have rotation at the elbow which is nice for posing, but it's also very loose. Thighs are nice and tight while knees are that smooth-loose feeling. I recommend it if you're a huge 91 fan, but expect looseness.

So im not gonna say this guy sucks... but its one of the worst builds I've had in a very... very long time. It should include a bottle of super glue with it. Some parts just ont fit, some parts are too tight, there are stress marks from straight assembly, and pieces fall off. Its one of those things where you put one piece back on and another one or two has fallen off. Look at the kneecaps and the cannon arm, the armor has stress marks on them just from basic assembly. And this guy was $80. Stick to figma maxfactory and let bandai handle the models.

>>6183488
>>6183491
Well considering I've built dozwes of kotobukiya and bandai kits in the past and never had a problem, in pretty sure the kits the problem. Sanding down a nub mark before putting the two pieces together isn't necessary when the nub doesn't even touch the connections. Or how the right arm sandwiches together just fine, but the peg on the left arm was too big to fit the corresponding hole one the right side so i had to literally cut off a peg. Or the top half of the leg armor is just loosely held on by friction, and falls off every time you pick it up.
Yes, with some work i can and will fix the kit. And once i do that it will be pretty nice. But comparing this to other kits ive done its one of the worst I've put together in a long long time.

Right. And this is clearly made to that same audience as well. Its a snapfit kit. I didnt complain about fitting and pegs for the superman kit from the 70's i put together. Hell, i had to heat that up and bend the parts back together they had warped so bad. That was a 40 year old model kit. This is a 2017 snapfit kit for $80. This is around the price of the Sazabi ver Ka. Yes, glue will fix a lot of the problems, but something like pegs not fitting because they didnt mold them well enough shouldn't be an issue. I will say, bandai has spoiled me.
>>
>>6184075
This is a very good point. It's far less "wah wah baby can't fix a flawed kit" and more "this is not worth the asking price."

For the record, I've mostly had great experiences with Koto kits though, with very pleasing builds and good parts fit. I wonder what went wrong with this one?
>>
>>6184075
You keep on harping on about 'fixing' it but youre still here bitching and complaining because an oob snapfit of the kit wasnt snapfag pandering tier of lazy builder standards.

I guess the 1/35 Dora is the worst kit ever. 800 bucks and moulded in one colour AND it needs glue to stay together. What a hunk of shit.
>>
>>6184086
Licensing fees + manufacturing costs + r&d + making the molds.

MF doesnt have the facilities to mass produce like Bandai, so they will barely recover all that cost back unless they charge too much.

Could have saved 80 bucks if he didnt have shit taste in mecha though.

>>
>>6184091
>I guess the 1/35 Dora is the worst kit ever. 800 bucks and moulded in one colour AND it needs glue to stay together. What a hunk of shit.
Basically yeah. You're paying for for $800 of raw plastic. It's a terrible value with ancient engineering, and from review pics, terrible mold quality. Some of the detail resolution looks like it was produced by a hand plunger machine, the machines that makes the kit are probably from the 60s.
>>
>>6184086
Poor manufacturing. It's not uncommon for Chinese to create a few really good samples (few hundred to prove their worth) and then make garbage production runs. And unless you're big enough to ruin them they'll play chicken and tell you to fuck off.

Hardware industry is full of stories like that. The Chinese are simply not reliable in general. Even a 50% chance of getting a good manufacturing partner is a huge risk. It's time for everyone to stop producing in China.
>>
Right boys, any good Gunpla or model stores in the San Francisco area at all? I'm in the area for a few days on holiday and just want to see if there's anything worth picking up, even trying my luck and seeing I any places have p-bandai by any stretch or the imagination.
>>
>>6184217
Tatsu Hobby in the San Jose area is arguably the place to go to for plamo in the bay area.

Theres also surprisingly enough a decent gunpla selection at Hobbytown USA in Concord just across the bridge. They also stock a large variety of tamiya paint.

Toyslogic in Concord has a few plamo selections as well as some rarer things like maschinen krieger models, and I think they have some gaia paint in stock as well.

Ying's hobbystore in Chinatown is decent too, although some of the kits in there might be overpriced, but they guy knows his shit and is pretty fair most of the time, not to mention the store's history goes way back and is one of the earliest places to obtain gunpla in the city.

If you're looking for resin models if you ask nicely Hobbyfan in San Leandro will let you dig around in their stock. They don't keep their resin stuff updated online so you'll have to go in store to see what they have.
>>
I'm deciding to finally paint a model but I can't decide on what I wan't to do.

How do people decide their colors?
>>
>>6184263
Go with your favorite colors in shades. Or your favorite character's colors on another mech. Or pick a theme and roll with that. Or just paint the mech the same colors it's supposed to and make it look really damn good.
>>

I think that low number is exactly why we DON'T have p-bandai. That 30% includes Asia, which has p-bandai already

We're a very small piece of the pie it turns out.

Info:

>Over the past few years, we have experienced considerable success in rolling out Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models in Asia. The Toys and Hobby SBU considers Japan and Asia to be a single market because of the large number of points in common in regard to customer preferences. We are following a strategy of conducting Japan originated business activities simultaneously in Asia. Under this strategy, Japan has overall responsibility from the development stage to the media strategy, while sales activities are implemented by bases in each region of Asia. In Mobile Suit Gundam business development initiatives in Asia, we offer free distribution of visual products at the same time as in Japan through the GUNDAM.INFO information site. In addition, to communicate the quality of Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models to customers, we sponsor many events at a wide range of locations that enable customers to actually see and touch Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models, and we are also rolling out products at the same time in Japan and Asia. Furthermore, Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models are recognized as products that offer Made in Japan high quality, and that recognition is also increasing the brand value. The increase in the popularity of Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models is due in part to our efforts to nurture the group of core users through the continued implementation of these initiatives over several years. The popularity then spread to the group of general users, which has expanded significantly.
>>
>>6184318

>In the future, I think it will be necessary to take steps to solidify the base of core users and to
develop new users. Moreover, the various countries and regions in Asia have their own cultures and business practices, and accordingly it will be necessary to provide detailed responses while focusing on the special characteristics of each market. We need to ensure that the popularity of Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models in Asia does not become a temporary trend. To that end, we will work to achieve dramatic growth in the future through initiatives to build a foundation.

>Steadily Establishing a Foothold in Europe and the Americas

>In North America, broadcasts of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans began in
June 2016 on the Cartoon Network. Due to the broadcast on cable TV, in addition to online distribution, we expect to see further growth in IP recognition. Furthermore, in Europe, following Italy, we have also started to roll out Mobile Suit Gundam plastic models in France. Moving forward, we will strive to steadily expand the regions in which we offer these products while maintaining a focus on the characteristics of each region.
>>
>>6184300

I recently decided to try my hand at handpainting my gunpla (I've never painted before, so this might have been a bad decision to begin with but it seemed cheaper than getting an airbrush). I've been practicing with plastic spoons because I have a huge fear of fucking things up.

Anyway, after the third coat on one of my test spoons dried, I noticed some little spots on it that seemed slightly lighter than the rest of the spoon. Is this because I did something wrong, or will more coats fix things?

Shit, it has. Now I see, I'll try again with less paint on the brush. Someone mentioned a 3:2 ratio for thinning, but I'm gonna see if I can get away with less (I've been using water, since the guide said I can use it to thin acrylics).
