What was the first toy specifically made for an adult audience?

Of course some adults collect retail TFs, Joes and Lego but I'm talking about things like Hot Toys figures, Sentinel super robots, TF Masterpieces and such. Real toys (no statues) designed for an adult owner.

I'm also very interested into the context. Why did it happen? Was there a demand at the time or did the makers created it?

Hard question since first you'd have to define what qualifyes as an adult toy. You could make the case that the really expensive, intricate gokin toys that emerged during the 80's were aimed more to older people since letting children go to town with them would be irresponsible.

Actually meant to post the bit in this page

http://www.collectiondx.com/toy_line/spiral_zone

>Spiral Zone detail balanced a fine line between toy and model kit and was aimed towards the high dollar toy and model kit collector market and were mostly advertised in model magazines such as Hobby Japan.

So around 1985, perhaps earlier

I wish GSC would do a Tabletop Museum for Venus of Willendorf and a regular figma of Porkchopaco.

Bild Lilli, the German predecessor of Barbie. Lilli was the star of a German comic strip lampooning the idea of the modern career woman in the 1950s.

>what's an adult toy

This.

We could classify as toys a load of things, and some would be hardly accepted as toys for most of people here, like puzzles, airsoft guns or TGC.

Now, if we follow the idea of articulated figures which are too delicate to be ham handed by regulars kids, that's it, articulated figures designed for interaction with adults for the mere purpose of entertainment, then I would nominate the karakuri puppets as some of the oldest adult toys.

Although, to be fair, this kind of technology goes back to the greek, and yes, some were employed for entertainment purposes, and not merely exhibition.

I mean there's been porn/hentai toys for a while.

Seconding.

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of things I was asking for.

Considering I have no idea when I bought my Marvel Legends figures, I guess I'd have to go with the MP-4 Convoy.
>>

I read an interesting theory that these were fertility gods sculpted by pregnant women by looking at their bodies from above.
>>

My guess is that you should read further than the thread title.
>>

I read a similar thing. Someone also proposed it was a self-portrait with additional curves to be a sort of reference sculpture of what a healthy pregnancy should look like. Like a Paleolithic equivalent of an ultrasound.

But that's factually wrong.

The first adult toy marketed as such was Bild Lilli:

>"Lilli dolls could be bought in tobacco shops, bars and adult-themed toy stores,”

It eventually became Barbie, but that doesn't change the fact it was a toy, a fashion doll, specifically aimed at adults.

I did.

I don't understand what you're getting at. That I'm not following the meme instead of actually taking OP's question seriously?
>>
Oldest one I can think of is Bild Lilli. She was the German forerunner to Barbie. She was very much not for children, Think she was used to sell cigarettes.

I saw a vintage Bettie Boop doll from the thirties once. Pretty naked so I guess it was for adults.

Wha... what does that even mean?

So you're not "following the meme," and not taking OP's question seriously, so what are you doing?
>>
>>6185830
It was probably a novelty item, not a toy.
>>
>>6175316
From what I can tell the adult-oriented toys first started showing up in the 90's with the Japanese stuff.
>>
I'm going to take a shot and say it was either when "comic store only" toys 1st showed up at your LCS or when you could buy Spawn toys at your local Wal Mart
>>
>>6186279
>and not taking OP's question seriously
???
>>
>>6187530
While those weren't the -first- toys marketed to adults that was a very important time that changed the market. McFarlane deserves some credit for basically creating the market for the ((adult)) toy figure hobby in the west.
>>
>>6188029
Nobody asked what was the first toy you bought as an adult. Read the thread.

probably the first good-quality string puppet or similar then

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
