Making outfits for toys

Didn't wanna clog the bst with this anymore so I decided to make a thread for it.

Anyone make clothes for their toys? I decided to start sewing last night. Never done it in my life. It's pretty fun! So far I've made some clothing for my revoltech cattelya.

Made the school girl outfit. It's a little rough in some areas, but I don't have a sewing machine or steady enough hands to hem the edges by hand.

Can you teach me how to make body armor for figmas? I want to have my generic school girls decked out in gear
>>
I honestly just winged it. The seams aren't that clean but it works. Like I said in the other thread, try using stretchy fabric to make stuff. It'll fit and conform to the bodies easier.

That looks pretty great! I'm gonna take a swing at making more complex outfits like this soon.

Do you sew the pieces together and then flip it inside out? It hides the seams much better.
>>
>>6155519
don't think my skill set would be much help to you man. The only reason My outfit turned out half decent is because she's completely naked under that, she's essentially a blank body.

If you were to try to sew something it would have to conform to/ settle onto the molded detail/ clothes of your school girls outfits. But to be honest I'm picturing the lucky star figmas as I type this.

The best advice I could give you is to snatch a vest pattern and improvise from that using an olive drab for the cloth and stitch some pockets on. If you've never sewn keep in mind that you need to sew with the outfit inside out and when it's finished put it right-side-out.

>>6155562
>Do you sew the pieces together and then flip it inside out?

Oh yeah, it looks worse on the inside.

Actually some fabrics will too. My cattelya had some stains on her from the dark fabric I'm getting out now.

I didn't even think about baloons staining. I figured you wouldn't have them on for prolonged exposure though. They would probably curl horribly after a few hours.

I fed the wire through the armor/neck piece until it was stable. I then cut out some fabric to my liking and sewed it around the wire. There are better solutions out there for sure, but this one worked and I've stuck with it. I should revisit it someday and improve it though.

I left it on until her nipples started tearing through the balloon(a couple weeks maybe). Twice actually. The first time it was more of a turtleneck, and this was the second(left a small dent though).

However, I put the first dress on a MU Hope Summers and made a "crop top" like 80's Rogue and the balloon melted into a gum onto her body, didn't stain it, but...

>>6157561

I made a cape for my boyfriend's Hot Toys Arkham City Batman. Did a little research and realized the expensive ones (Unreal and such) were actually very simply made, just out of tricky-to-find fabrics. There's a store nearby with dance costume fabrics which are the right weight so I gave it a shot. Gonna try to make one for his Batfleck and Supes next.

I'll try to get pics tomorrow.

Very good analogy but probably in a different way than you think.

Both are very satisfying feelings- hotgluing the figure for obvious reasons and throwing gunplastic for they are so fragile they'll break into literal hundreds of pieces that are lightweight and scatter everywhere.

>>
Is learning to sew absolutely necessary to make simple items like cloaks and robes?
>>
>>6187738
Yes, because of the hoods and the sleeves. Double-sided tape doesn't cut it, cuz tape cannot hold any weight or pressure and the adhesive degrades over time.

You night have some luck with iron-on tape, but that stuff will stiffen your seam. A sewn seam is more flexible, and has a more realistic drape over the neck and shoulders.

For anyone looking, there's a link to some clothing patterns in one of the first posts in the BJD General. Its scans of some Japanese doll books, but the directions are usually very easy to understand (or easy to Google Translate if you have the app) and its simple enough to resize to your figure if its not the right scale. Generally speaking the Dollybird ones always have a very simple pattern for Blythe dolls somewhere in the middle that are super easy to do if you are a beginner.
>>
>>6187738
To make most stuff all you need to know is a running stitch and a backstitch. Get some scrap fabric, practice for a bit until you get the stitch lengths even, and you're good. Its really easy I promise. Get yourself some Fray-Check too, its like a thin clear glue for fabrics that keeps them from unraveling that you apply to the edges (or for weathered looking cloaks, keeps the fraying in control and allows you to cut holes and then seal them so they don't get fuzzy)
>>
>>6183644

I knit with tiny needles and scraps of yarn. I take patterns from full-sized people and convert them into ratios that work with the doll I have. It's very tricky and tedious, but I'm very proud of the results. Though it has made it difficult to have a good wardrobe that's not just made of sweaters.

I know how to sew a little, so I'm also working on that. I just got a tiny iron for pressing tiny seams, and that helps make the clothes look so much better.
>>
>>6213585

You have no idea how sad that makes me. Their top 30 was a bunch of great fucking figures, most of which are now extremely overpriced and in dire need of reprints like some of the QB girls who never got reprints, Ed and Al from FMA, some of the rare Assembleborgs, etc.
>>
>>6221807
>Why are half the images in this thread broken?
I can be wrong, but I guess that 4chan suffered an attack a couple of weeks ago and the image posting were down for a few hours, and this is the result.
>>
>people charge for sewing patterns
>literally for sketches and a few measurements
>nothing physical, just a fucking .jpg with some fucking design notes

And they say toy collectors are irresponsible with money.
>>
I wanna make a 1/6 keyhole sweater. Anyone got any doll sweater patterns I could use as a starting point?

>>6221884
That's excellent. Got more pics of your work? Those buttons look a little too big, though. Have you tried making appropriately scaled ones out of polymer clay? I'm gonna give it a try next time I make doll clothes.

Have you tried your hand at memeshit like the virgin killer sweater? I kind of want one for my figures, but I'm useless with yarn myself.

>>6227426
I don't know about drafting clothing patterns, but complex plushie patterns take a lot of work and knowledge to make. Not to mention all the pattern testing.
>>
>>6227426
You do realize most sewing patterns are paid for, right? Whether it's a scan of a doll pattern book, a scaled version of a human sized pattern, or something on Etsy, most patterns cost money. It takes time to come up with the correct measurements and shapes.
>>
>>6228156
The fact that it's common industry practice doesn't change the fact that it's stupid.
>>
>>6230390
Then make your own patterns. It is actually a very easy to learn skill on top of being incredibly useful.
>>
>>6228142
