I hope you don't mind, I reworked your pic a tad to make the color a little less homogeneous

>>6151611
So rapey
It looks like you're using a phone camera. They tend not to focus well in dim light.
I'd crop it a bit at the top just on the edge of that green bar.
Cropping can make a world of difference. Compare the OP image
>>6150983
with pic related
>>6151782
I mean this in the nicest way possible, but your original photo is actually better than your crop...your crop is kinda bad compositionally, and contrast is too high (some blacks being crushed in his cape and helmet crest). Plus you accidentally left a 1px white strip at the top.
I gave it a shot, trying to give it a twilight/dusk feel. I recropped it, adjusted levels a bit, added a color dodge layer, sharpened some of the foreground a tad, and blurred out the distant rocks some more. Note that compared to yours, this gives us some breathing room on the right, so it doesn't feel as claustrophobic.
>>6151816
Thanks.
I put it against the rocks because I had this pic related scene in mind where the Spartans are blocking the pass. Not economically feasible but I'd army build just for this.
I think you misunderstood me. The OP Picture
>>6150983
Was cropped (cut out from) this
>>6151782
I included it to show the difference cropping can make because you're right, it is a bit of a mess which is why I cropped it down to the OP picture. It's also why the color and lighting seem better in the OP picture because that was the final product.
There are some people who criticize retouching but frankly they don't know what they're talking about. Photographers retouch, its just part of the process plain and simple. Good retouching is a lot like great CG in a movie; when done right you shouldn't really notice it.
Rarely will you get a perfectly colored shot unless you're shooting in film. When you shoot digital it's best to shoot in RAW instead of JPEG because it captures all of the light. Because it captures all of the light its going to blend and come out mudded and kind of grey but you can bring it out in post, which is the whole point of RAW.
>>6151816
that looks so fucking dope
>>6151816
I think it's supposed to look claustrophobic and yours is less interesting because its bland like you just made it blue but your both wrong because the movie is filtered to hell in orange
>>6152000
It's not bland.
I like the framing better than what I did although you're right, I was going for "claustrophobic" as I stated above but I did misspeak.
>It's also why the color and lighting seem better in the OP picture because that was the final product.
What I meant to say is that the color and lighting is better in the **thumbnail**.
I'm a massive Instagram whore and I frame and color to make better thumbnails as opposed to the full picture because standing out on Instagram is all about making interesting thumbnails and with the compression that's what you're basically making, thumbnails. That's why I tend to use higher contrasts and sometimes saturation. Basically my pictures are the lifted trucks of toy photography; I exaggerate to compensate for a smaller size.
You're right about 300 being a filter smorgasbord which I think suits the color scheme I was going for in pic related better than it would with any other figure

>>6152575
Very cool but the lighting is boring.
Him being covered by 90% shadow doesnt work. The background and pose are sublime, but the subject just doesn't have anything as a fill light and it detracts from the entire picture.
One thing I do when I need fill light is I just bring small sheets of construction paper so when I want to use natural light as my source I can just put the paper out and the light being cast reflects off in the color of the paper lighting up the figure in different colors. Black is good when you need some but not a lot, which this picture needed.
I'm too unsecure to post any toy pics because of all your criticism and over the top 10/10 artsy photography. I miss the 2013 /toy/

Sure, the concept of getting critiqued can be a little daunting but constructive criticism from a perspective other than your own is crucial if you're seeking improvement. I seek criticism because I don't think I'm 10/10 but would like to be.
Look at what >>6152878 said. To be completely honest it never occurred to me that it was the case. And that's why critique from others is important.
The reason I value improvement so much is because I consider toy photography my hobby--- I mean yeah I collect toys and shoot other things but what I consider my hobby, the thing I enjoy on my off time and look forward to so I can unwind is taking pictures of my toys; that's how I play with them.
I mean yeah 4chan can be dickish at times but this is an image board and I've never been one to feed the trolls or get into flame wars

Torso bent further back, neck twisted slightly. Or you can use a stand and get his legs forward a bit and keep the body mostly stiff but slightly bent to look like the start of a hit of a really stiff lariat. Head would be going forward in that case.

Have you tried counterbalancing? Just pose Redhawk all bent over while Rider 1's putting all his weight in. Then have them balance against each other.
Here, I did this in like, 5 minutes, so the photo quality's not great. Most of those 5 minutes was just to fiddle with them until the sweet spot's found. Once they're counterbalanced, they're fairly stable for the purpose of photo taking.
>>6155558
>counterbalancing
Here's an experiment I did. I've been thinking of doing this in a field with a ton of those little flowers but it's winter.
Green is standing firm and Pink is being held up by him without a stand.
>>6155758

>>6156117
Praticing a bit after reading a bunch of tips from last thread, still have a long way to go but i'm sure having fun in the process.
Noticed an annoying thing, my cellphone adjusts lighting to whatever is on focus, which means that if i focus on the white trooper everything gets dark as fuck, if i focus on the back the pic gets clear enough but than the figure is all blurry, took me lots of shots to make it visible, ended up trying to focus somewhere between the hand and the blaster to keep it clear enough.
>>6156171
It's because the cellphone camera is automatic and programmed in a kind of "one or the other" way. You could try to back up from your subject a bit or shot in a way that introduces more things/colors, but as long as there is a stark contrast you'll always have this issue.
Unlike a DSLR a cell phone can't have a decent sized sensor so it compensates by making a smaller sensor more sensitive which makes it finicky
>>6156114
>>6156010
>>6156117
>>6156132
Nice.
>>6156171
What kinda phone do you have? If you have an iPhone, first off turn on HDR. To put it simply, HDR is a technique that takes two photos, one with all the dark areas emphasized, and one with all the light areas emphasized, and then combines them into one shot so you get the best of both worlds.
You can also try tapping on the trooper to focus on it, then without releasing your finger, slide up and down to adjust the exposure (you'll see a little sun icon beside the focus square moving up and down).
Sorry I can't help you if you have some other type of phone, but you can Google and see if your phone has these features as well.
>>6154225
Would you say HACKS are on the same quality range as ARW? I really like the softness of the plastic and articulation.
>>6156182
Interesting, so a DSLR would make this happen without trouble due to the size of the sensor? I still want to learn more before spending any money on a camera, but that sure picked my attention.
>>6156323
It's a Zenfone 5, but you did reminded me that there probably are guides to better use any gimmick my camera might offer, thanks Anon.
Here's a little help guys. For quick snaps, Mounting Putty really does the job when keeping your figures in balance. There's pre-cut ones, but I prefer the long strips and cut it to taste.
It doesn't hold forever, but it works for certain photographic instances. Doesn't damage plastics or die-cast and its removable.

The same goes for Sinon and Sword Art Online. My little brother's into it but I've never seen it.
The other chick in the blue I later found out is from Girl und Panzer which I did end up checking out. I regret not buying the Figma tank from the show. Currently debating whether to get the rest of the crew.

yeah and due to their size they really bounce around. very easy to lose them when rolling them due to the height and distance they can bounce.
if you have any FLGS nearby still somehow for some ungodly reason happen to have stock of either the pirates or star wars constructible pocket model games, then see if you can buy them for real cheap. Many places I knew were trying to sell them off for less then a dollar a pack. Heck five and below had them for a good while, last I saw them was last year. Minimal use of filters are okay. This is what I don't get about some toy photographers. Unless your white balance and lighting are perfect you're going to have to do some post--- its just part of the process and always has been. I know its not toy related but see pic related.
Good filtering and post is like good CG in a movie; when done right you shouldn't really notice it. Look at this >>6152957

You take your photo in portrait (the camera is up and down) instead of in landscape (side to side). Your camera automatically flips the image so it's always "right" no matter which angle you view the photo. It's programed to do that.
When you post it, the image info (exif data) will cause it to display in whichever orientation you took the picture.
You need to do a quick edit before you post, or it will always post differently than the way you see it in the camera.
There's data in the image files which tells certain software to rotate them, but the pages here (for one) don't handle that information.
You need to open with something like MS Paint or another "regular" image processing package and save them as regular jpegs rotated correctly.
If they are uploading sideways that means that the image really is sideways.
You are most likely looking at them using a program that is automatically rotating the image for viewing (but not actually saving the image in the rotated state). You need to make sure your images are saved in the correct orientation before uploading them.

Don't use the Prisma app. It's one of those things that are kinda neat to play around with but the finished product never looks good to anyone but the artist.
I use the Pixelmator and VSCO apps but you never want to go 100% with the filters, go light like around 36% or just enough to make your blacks black and your colors pop.
The vignette also helps tremendously. If you're strictly using the Instagram filters I'm fond of Mayfair and Patchwork, usually after muting the colors with the Fade filter on my phone.
>>6161638

Interesting theory in the video. His adjustments look like utter shit though when all he should have done is just up the saturation a bit without making everyone orange or everything look like it's during a sunset.
On the Kylo pic though, I think you have the right idea but have gone the wrong direction in a sense. The whites should be brighter and while his blacks should be darker, just not to that extremity. It feels you have gone that dark and just lost details when you should try for that sweet spot of details in the original pic with a more rich black.

>shit looks the same
If I have a one trick pony it's pic related. Get it? Because it's--- never mind.
Why is that? Probably because the majority of shit I post (on 4chan) is B-roll or quick snaps in the house which make for the same look since it's the same location. Since this is an image board I try to reply with a picture every time but I'm finding that I actually don't have that many so I reply with a lot of similar shit I just threw together or never showed before. Then again, when I shoot outdoors I revisit the same locations a lot too.
Subject wise, I tend to unload the same toys around the same time because I tend to play with a "flavor of the week." Last week it was Figma Miyo Asato and now its Harley Quinn because she just came in so I've been playing with and taking lots of pics with her.
When you look at most toy photographers you start seeing the similarities and their "pony tricks." Now that you mention it I don't think I can name a single one without a signature look of one kind or another.
