For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

I love mine. Aside from the proportions (which makes the originally bulky suit rather lean, and a change that a number of people don't like) and the lack of the spray missile pods (which the original came with), it's pretty much a perfect Guncannon kit. Using Bandai's modern joint structure gives it amazing articulation, it has virtually no seam lines, and clean detailing. Everything with the kit comes molded in-color, with the visor piece being molded in clear plastic instead of being a sticker like with the original HGUC Guncannon. Not to mention it's dirt cheap and sturdy as fuck. Heck, the thing can even mount the old HGUC's spray missile pods as long as you put the Revive's polycaps into them.

Basically,

>No spray missile pods

I heard some bad things about pic related but thought I would give it a try for the group build.

Worst mistake I've made model building wise. Parts dont fit, it comes with "waterslides" that dont adhere, sticker decals that are the wrong sizes. Literally a rip off.

Ive never not completed a kit but im thinking about just tossing this.

Weird, I built the Resistance X-Wing, which should just be the same mold in a different color, and had no problems. All the parts and stickers/waterslides fit well, but in a number of places the stickers go over areas with lots of detail/greebling, so that made them not stay flat.

That being said, these guys are really cool. Bandai also did a spinoff line with non-Gundam properties, including some toku characters. I got Kamen Rider 1 for cheap a few months ago and it's actually pretty fun to play with. It's like an SD-styled Souchaku Henshin figure.
>>
>>6149893
Gentei and NY mark up up the ass and you pay pretty standard shipping on them.

Samuel decal always rapes me on shipping compared to ordering from Japanese sites. Also he doesn't always respond.
>>
>>6149692
I bought it at a local mom and pop store in town.
>>

Baka! Just buy from Mandarake. Release window P-Bandai kits are always JPY RRP +/- 1000 yen. No price gouging, exhorbitant middleman fees

>buh buh used

BAKAYARO! They're brand new items that were previously owned by someone else. Most of the time, they havent even been unboxed yet.
>>
>>6149925
That's very true, although NY tends to beat out the others with lower markup (at least with some preorders) in my experience. For example, the White Dingo GM Sniper II's P-Bandai price is 4104; on NY it's going for 4620, on Gentei it's 5745, and on SD it's $49 (plus the shipping estimate is $25).

I'm trying out proxyrabbit myself, because the interface makes it really easy to order P-Bandai stuff and I'm having various problems with using 2you4 for this. Problem is, adding their fees means that it'll still cost 4609.2 before shipping, which is barely cheaper than NY. Really wish I could use 2you4, or that Derringer gets past his troubles and manages to bring P-Bandai to North America.

I thought that kid was naked for a sec.

What's oob?

>>6150068
My first kit was a Master Grade, there's nothing hard about them. And the size allows for more detailing if you want.
Most kits in the past 5 to 10 years look great out of the box if you're a snapfag (and you really shouldn't be)

I'd say get whatever suit you like the best. I usually watch Jabman025's review videos before buying because he goes into a lot of detail and rarely does anything to them aside from panel lining, so you get a real good sense of what the kit is actually going to look like. Also I think he only does MGs.
>>
As someone totally new for airbrushing, is tamiya my best bet? acrylic btw
>>
>>6150150

>what's oob

>most kits look great out of the box

I thought this was a funny coincidence.
>>
>>6150157
Tamiya and Mr Color are both fairly easy to work with.

Tamiya you will find is most commonly acrylic, Mr. Color is a laquer, so use their respective thinners.

Reading and research can save you a lot of headache with airbrushing.

I actually recommend testing your painting on scrap plastic, like empty sprues, so you get the hang of it.

Keep your airbrush clean.
>>
>>6150159
I thought that's what it meant, but it didn't make sense in the post

"if I do an out of the box like Dalong did" and then it's a post of a painted figures.
>>
>>6150157
I use Mr. Hobby Aqueous. It's acrylic. And I love it. It's not really out of brand loyalty though, it was just the one I grabbed because it had the color I wanted, and since then I stuck with them.

But I'm in Japan, so I don't know how hard it is to find outside.
>>
>>6150166
Nothing in that picture appears to be painted. The kit comes with water slides and stickers for detailing the figures.
>>
>>6150184
I guess I didn't really look at it.

I usually think of human figures to be in one color. Those one had like red collars and cameo and stuff.
>>
>>6150157
Go lacquer or go home
Acrylics are fine and dandy until you try lacquers, they dry insanely fast. Doesn't mean they're cured, but it's good enough for handling and starting the next coat
Anyway get a respirator, acrylics are not any safer than lacquers while spraying.
>>
>>6150203
Fuck I don't have a respirator, and no one at my hobby shop (it has paint booths) uses them. Most people use nothing or a surgical mask.

I'm worried if my lungs are fucked or if it's really that big a deal.
I don't smoke or anything.

The amounts of paint we inhale from airbrushing isn't actually too significant, you won't die from it in the next 20 years[citation needed] . Unless you work in a mine, or stick your airbrush up your nose every session.
Working with lacquers should require one, since the fumes are toxic and may cause chemical damage

Rattle cans though, you should wear one while spraying if you do it often

Acrylics are significantly safer. Lacquer thinner is very toxic to the human body, especially if inhaled. There have been people who died just from huffing paint thinner vapors, albeit in enclosed spaces (which is what a lot of people are working in at homes).

Don't trivialize it, it's a serious chemical cocktail and rates up there with lesser industrial waste vapors.

>>
>>6150325
No one's saying not to use safety equipment, you should when dealing with any vapors and particulates. But if you huff acrylics you'll have lung problems for a while, if you have lacquer thinner you'll have severe nervous system damage, permanent lung damage, and possibly death.

You're not doing anyone by comparing the two. Ideally when working with lacquer thinner you should be wearing goggles (not safety glasses) and protective clothing in case of spills, because it is worse than high concentration isopropyl alcohol to absorb.

My HG Unicorn kits do feel a lot more durable and solid. I wonder if it's the quality of the plastic or if it's just that... IBO designs are mostly really thin pegs...
>>
>>6149979
NY has pretty good prices but how about shipping? EMS comes out to 8000 yen for 3 WD GM Sniper IIs, which seems quite high for just 3 kits.

By comparison HLJ's shipping for 3 regular GM Sniper IIs is just 4200 yen, basically half the cost.
>>
>>6150394
Oh, right. I forgot that NY's shipping is far more expensive than it should be -- they charged 1740 for SAL on the Hi-Nu Influx. Three of the WD GM Sniper IIs from Gentei would run 6600 for EMS compared to NY's 8000, and EMS for a single unit costs 3700 (NY) vs 3300 (Gentei).

Unfortunately the flat coat can only do so much. It chips around the part where the corner of the shoulder pad meets the chest. The edge is sharp.

Unless you're thinking about the weathering I used looking like the paint peeling. That's silver drybrushing and it's intentional.

What's the best Eva-01 kit, Koto's or Bandai's?
>>
>>6150291

Why does she have a blonde ponytail and purple bangs?

Fix that shit.
>>
>>6150828
If you're talking classic Eva tv show then it's up for grabs. If you're talking Eva Rebuild, regardless of how other anons might feel about the rebuild series, then Koto wins by default for being the only one to actually come up with a new mold for model kits to resemble the rebuild redesigns.
>>
>>6150900
Er, wait, what? You seem to be somewhat misinformed.

Both Bandai and Koto produced kits based on the Rebuild design. Bandai's proportions are rather wonky, and they did that shitty rubber-covered seamless arm thing again. Koto's kit was produced more recently, and boasts great proportions and engineering. Koto wins for Rebuild.

Bandai has produced numerous kits based on the TV design, but they are all quite old and outdated by now, and many have problems with proportions too. Koto, on the other hand, very recently retooled their excellent Rebuild kit into the TV design. Lemme tell ya, having built some of the old Bandai Eva 01s, this thing is leaps and bounds above it. Koto's kit also has no stickers and a few pre-painted parts even! Really the only gripes I can come up with are that there's no yellow piece for the top of the kneepads, and they didn't prepaint the green stripe on the horn.

tl;dr: Whether TV or Rebuild, Koto wins. I wish they'd make TV 00 and 02 as well, they really did a good job on 01.

>>
>>6151163
what seems to be the problem?
>>
>>6151168
Just about everything on that bit of the instructions. No place to snap pieces in, aside from F7, F6 and F5. Feels like I just have to break out plastic cement of super glue to get things connected, but it lacks the icon for that.
>>
I love this show/channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kU2XRFofh8
>>
>>6151189
I still fail to see the problem. Do you have the pieces in front of you? Did you try to fit them where the instruction shows? Either they snap in place or they don't in which case you glue them.

The text talks about moving the seats front-back so that the figures of soldiers fit and how you need to choose how to attach certain parts etc there is nothing about glue. I think it's implicit.

Just bought the RG Mark Two AEUG. I was told by the owner it has a nylon tube or something I need to cut very, very carefully. Did I make a mistake ordering this? I'm not a ham hands, but I am worried now that one wrong cut and I will have wasted my money. This is only my second kit as well, read the guide but it did not mention anything about this sort of situation.

>>
>>6151377
take your time, it's not that hard. I'd suggest keeping it in storage and building a few more other cheaper kits, but really, just take it slow with RGs and make sure you work in a clean organized area so if you drop anything, you'd be able to find it.

Looks fine to me man. The only thing that looks significantly thicker on the koto is the fingers. And in fact, the Koto's waist looks even slimmer than the original design.

>They hold up pretty damn well for being over fifteen years old.
That's...not a good argument, you realize? You can say anything "holds up well for old it is," the simple fact is, that becomes completely irrelevant if a better engineered option now exists. Which it does.

As for your last point...y'know what? If you're comparing them to the lineart, which is what I used for this comparison, yeah, you might be right. Cause I think this lineart looks sort of stiff, and that's exactly how I thought of the old Eva kits. Stiff and awkward looking. They do remind me of the lineart though! Whereas Koto's new kit reminds me of how Eva 01 looked in motion to me in the anime--dynamic and ready for action.
>>
>>6151660
That's the same compressor motor with a slightly different exterior.

You're not going to find a massive difference between the same design, especially since they're all the same compressor from some Chinese OEM who's been making it for at least 11 years.

On that note, they're very quiet compared to many compressors intended for craftsmen (home improvement stuff).
>>
>>6151673

You can always drill those out with a pin-vise, Anon.
>>
>>6151684

>>

>Koto's TV version is too fat.
That's not really a valid argument when the "TV version" as you know it doesn't really exist. The "TV version" is a variety of shapeshifters because the animators kept drawing it off model.

The original design was more like the EoE design but we got vastly different looks in the anime

>You can say anything "holds up well for old it is,"
I'm just sayan, if it weren't for the arms the LM-HG kits would stand up to a modern HG pretty well.

>the simple fact is, that becomes completely irrelevant if a better engineered option now exists.
So, what, are all the MG RX-78-2 kits before the 2.0 worthless because the 2.0 exists, even though they have completely different aesthetics? Should Bandai just cease production of their vintage kits, even though lots of people love and build them? You're a dumbass.

Okay.

That's what TV Evas tend to look like, though.
>>
>>6151774
Nah, if you compare this gif to the LM-HG above, the animation waist doesnt get as thin and the horizontal width of the shoulders is much slimmer. This creates more balanced proportions.
>>
>>6151774
The shoulders and head are in proportion with each other but in that gif the top of its waist and the bottom of its waist (where the leg armor meets the waist armor) are nearly the same width.

The Bandai kit's waist gets way too narrow at the bottom and the koto kit actually got it right. The upper thigh on the Bandai kit is also way too short compared to the gif, the longer upper thigh of the Koto kit is better.

In fact, I'd say in general the Koto kit gets a lot more things right, the actual limbs being too thick is probably the problem.

I'm almost finished this. It's my first real legit attempt at Gunpla (sans Airbrushing because damn that's a pricey meatball atm)
Just need to panel wash a few more parts and finish putting on the decal stickers.

Now I was wondering. Is there a place to get stands for gunpla? The one I'm using here came from my HG Kimaris Trooper, but this model didn't come with one at all. I'm gonna assume not many of them come with stands, so I'd like to get a few cheap ones if at all possible.
>>
>>6153637
Yes, just search for action base 1(1/100 sized) or action base 2(for 1/144) wherever you buy shit
>>

Aside from the bump in price given to the kit since that's part of it. It wasn't free, just cheap.

You mean something like an Action Base? Anyway, now that I'm done rolling my eyes, you don't have any cheaper options that don't involve taking the stand from something else aside from DIY. Cheap out on lunch one day and you've already got enough for an AB.

Notice how some connections are shown with dashed arrows while others have solid ones. Dashed arrows mean the parts snap together, while solid arrows mean the parts are glued. Bandai has used this style in their instructions since the 80s, maybe even longer than that.

The kit I got it from was actually a local purchase and it was super cheap. I'd honestly rather just order these parts because they are stable, have no moving pieces and just work for me since they are translucent, and low profile.

A single translucent action base that I could find shipped to Canada is $15. What I'm wondering is there any way I can just order more of this specific Runner and just have a bunch of these clear stable stands so I can put my models up on my shelf.

>>6153686
Thanks. I'll probably do that then. I have like 10 figmas that are just sitting in the box, so I might as well use the stands.

Well yeah, ordering the thing alone is stupid since it's small and getting anything sent out internationally is expensive to start. I was telling you to snag one the next time you placed an order with basically anything else, in all likelihood it wouldn't even increase the shipping costs by much when done that way. Can I assume you've actually checked your local shop to see if they have anything since they already sell gunpla?

Additionally, the ABs allow for more dynamic posing. You're saying you don't want to do that NOW, but if you ever change your mind you're stuck and them guess what? You either buy stands (again) or you can't pose your robutts freely.

Alright guys, I just recently got back into building gunpla after a one year hiatus. I think I'm ready to try airbrushing. Ive had this compressor with my iwata hp-c plus and I just realized that all the paints I have are acrylic (tamiya acrylic jar paints). I was wondering if there are any topcoats, mostly flat coats, that I can use to topcoat over the acrylic paint that I would be using. I don't want to resort to using mr.topcoat flat/matt because they're pretty expensive and pretty rare. I have a hobby shop that carries it, and when they have a shipment I usually buy about 6 cans. I think it's time to look for a cheaper alternative. I was thinking of using alclad 2's flat coat but I heard they're lacquer and those two don't mix.

ABs give you more range of motion than that and higher lift. And no, I'm not being contrarian for the hell of it. Notice how no one else is replying anymore? That's because there really aren't any better alternatives. You technically could order that same stand again on those same sprues as there are services that do that, but you'd still be ordering from Japan and paying about as much for an inferior product. If you're ordering all domestic all the time you'll probably want to see if your shop can order something for you cheaper or maybe look into buying some bootleg Figmas or the like just for the stands.

>>
>>6153944
Yes you can, cause Mig simply use vallejo paints in his line. For tamiya you can also use Gunze's Gjbby Color Thiner, it's same as X-20.
>>
>>6153493
Weird question. The prices even within grades fluctuate wildly depending on the size and complexity of the particular design, so I have no real expectations.

Accordingly, the most I would pay for a kit fluctuates with size/complexity as well--like, a HGUC GM and a HGUC Kshatriya should be very different in price. I guess the only thing I can really say is that the most I'd pay is straight up retail + shipping? Overpaying for kits doesnt make much sense since Bandai reissues most of them regularly. The only time I'd overpay is if it was a limited release or one I'm sure will never get reissued.

The AB bases come in two pieces, for a simple standing pose you could just use one and that bit won't be much bigger at all. I actually agree with you in the arms and additionally find that while the things are rock solid they're bothersome to get into place which is why I prefer Flying Bases, but those are a bit more expensive and have an even larger footprint. Kit bashing the two gets kind of expensive for a single base too.

>>6153857
Oh, one last idea that might be helpful: BST. Maybe someone has extra Action Bases or unneeded Figma stands. Hell, maybe you'll get lucky and find one of your things.
>>
Just a query, has anybody had any experiences with knock offs when buying from ebay? Also what should I look out for when it comes to ko's?
>>
>>6154217
I bought a resin weapon from some ebay chinks. Lost a part when putting it together, and they sent it to me it hassle free. But that's not really a ko, it's more third party

From what I understand Dragon Momoko is alright, the Tallgeeses come with some cool add ons (if you're getting that I'll totally buy one of heatlances off you) and are actually more detailed, and I heard Daban(?) is also alright.
But the plastic with these kits are inferior, and you also have to keep in mind there there is little to no product control.

I'd say if you looking at saving 10-15 dollars, why not just go with the real thing? I mean how big of a price difference are we looking at?

Regardless if you're going to buy it, look to see if there's an ebay review.

Hey man, I got some suggestions for you. Work on your posing. That's a bad pose .. Check out the readme at the top of the thread. Try this pose, for example.

Second, your light source is wrecking any chance you have to make your model look cool, it's way too bright. Lay a piece of paper over your light to soften the glare on it.

Third of all, try some sandpaper graduating from say 500 up to 2000 on those nubs. I know the pics only make it more clear they're there, sometimes I take 4k pics with my phone just to double check if I missed something.

A lot of people will give you shit for this, just know it only takes time to get used to it and some practice. It's a good first try and if it's not, it's still a good try. Read some of the tips and tricks in the OP and you can make this something to be really proud of.

I'll keep all three of those points in mind, thank you Anon. I've been using the file that came with my Tamiya tool kit, might switch to sandpaper to get less nubbily nubs. Lighting and posing were rush jobs, and even I'll admit it looks shit though.

Have a picture of what I consider my crowning gunpla achievement, with natural lighting in a far better place to be photographed as an apology.

Files work good but only if you have multiples to segue into a smooth finish, that's why I say use sandpaper. You can get vinyl backed sandpaper from 150 to 2500, 10 sheets between those two, for less than $10 shipped from Ebay. Get something flat, double size glue it to it. If you want something for round objects, you should get some 3M double sized tape and tape the paper to both sides of it and it'll promote better removal. 3M also sells sponges that are awesome and super thick. None of this shit is expensive but it'll make your nub removal much easier. Choose your poison, but choose a few. Metal files alone are good but alone they wreck plastic.

Even God Hands got reissued so they're MSRP for a little while.
