Yes and no. They exist in the sense that it wouldn't be economically feasible for Bandai to release a new mold every week or something like that, but they're not some concrete law that means that every figure released is done so at the cost of another character. If they had the means to release three new molds in a given month, they wouldn't say, "well, shit, looks like we have to scrap one of these releases because we only have two open slots."

Web exclusive means that in Japan, it's only available to purchase on the Premium Bandai web shop. For some SHF this makes importing it more complicated, but the Dragon Ball line has international distributors like Bluefin who also release it normally in local stores and web shops.

We usually don't have specific release dates more than a month in advance, and even then that's only the Japanese date. Gohan is scheduled for Jan 26th, but internationally he'll be out about a month later. So he might start appearing in your local stores in late Feb.

It's a build a figure. Buy 2 Vegetas and 2 Gokus, Beerus, and Frieza and you make what seems to be a non poseable Shenron. If they do make it articulated, even simplistic with ball pegs connecting the segments with little ball pegs in the arm, that'd be a for sure buy. And hopefully for the Vegeta and Goku each will have a different costume, the ones shown and probably the Return of F costumes. We already know there will be a ssj and normal head, and I assume they'll be interchangeable.

The truth is figuarts is more than even the dragon ball, kamen rider, or wrestling releases. The company has been constantly expanding at every opportunity to make its own custom toys like the star wars v fuedal japan crossovers and even movie related figures. There is only so many figures a toy company can focus on and manufacture at a time and the figuarts line is huge now. Dragon ball is just a branch that is set on the back burner for now.

The Tamashii Nations branch of Bandai was still pretty adolescent when they began doing Dragon Ball things. Then their staff improved and/or got new, better skilled blood.

To be honest, I don't think anybody was expecting them to put their new A-game talents toward Dragon Ball figuarts. Anime/animated material used to be considered secondary among the Figuarts line, with Tamashii Nations seeming to be more interested in pursuing and working on live action IPs and mecha. Then these newer DB figures come starting coming into production with a new attitude toward design and engineering.

It makes sense to wait for the dub to air in America before making figuarts of new characters (or new versions of characters) for maximum marketability. The problem is at one episode per week it's gonna take fucking forever to get to that point, and we'll never be able to catch up to Japan at that rate. Even at two new episodes per week it would take two years to catch up to Japan.

Would you guys consider figuarts to be the "definitive" dragon ball figure line? I've started collecting them as well as some older figures, and I can't tell if I should bank on figuarts and assume I'm getting the best figure for each character I can (until they make updated versions) compared to other brands or waiting for American figure releases. Yes, they are the definitive line. For now, I would only buy the 2.0 body figures(newest Vegeta, awakening goku, super Saiyan trunks etc). The ones with pic related hips. A lot of characters will probably get re issued with updated engineering. If your buying on ebay, don't get anything from China.

They don't look bad because they're kits. They look bad because the sculpting is bad. They look awkward in most poses, the proportions are wonky, and the faces are pretty much uniformly awful.

Also, a lot of the choices of plastic color were kinda bad and the color separation could be better. These look pretty bad as OOB builds. And yeah, I know they're model kits and all, but Bandai was really upping their color separation game in other lines. Was expecting a little more here.
