It's more likely to hide the fact that the prototype wasn't done at the time. So the legs probably aren't really connected or something here. Or, the lower body wasn't articulated.

At least, that's the only thing that I can assume that makes some kind of sense.

It's really weird, if you lighten it, you can see that they didn't even hide the joint. It looks like they maybe cloned out some defect or something. It's a pretty shit Photoshop job for such a big company, maybe an intern did it.

It's a bad practice because people who aren't used to PAKs will be surprised with the in-hand figure, but I guess Square Enix can get away with it. Just the fact that the official promo pictures are in dimly lit lighting is a big alert that the QC might not be that good.
